A few of you have been asking for a howto guide on improving the performance on your devices, and I have listened!
I have made for you all a video guide on how to get your 7.7 flying!
Enjoy!
Galaxy Tab 7.7 Speed Tweaks ADW EX [ROOT]
Thanks, some nice stuff in there, even if a lot of it is really a ADW.EX tutorial.
Just fyi, you have a typo in the video description--you say ADX EX launcher.
About Customize Menu--you can reorder (or remove theoretically, but this was buggy for me) the items that appear on the top bar and in the drop-down when you push the menu button. I use this so that I can have Add in the menu, because I keep the top bar hidden and there is no other easy access to add/remove/move home screen pages.

Thanks for the hardwork on this tutorial on what your settings are and also I've seen a better view of your screen which apparently confirms my findings from your other video.
EDIT:
The ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=0 tweak really does wonders!
Thanks alot J.W. very nice job! & thanks for stepping up when all of us asked you to!!!!

I have to try this when I get home, the homescreen redraw drives me nuts, and its completely unecessary imo!
EDIT - OMGGGGGGGGG finally, the tablet has no effing homescreen redraw lag, thank you Jade Eyed Wolf!
Oh, oh. Just did this and now the tablet won't start!!!! I just get the initial "galaxy tablet 7.7" screen and then it stays black....
Any ideas? The only thing I changed was this
"Add this line to "/system/build.prop":
ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=0"
Help!!!!!
can someone post a copy of their build.prop (6810)? Would that help?
I can get into recovery, but rebooting form there doesn't do anything.....
Anyone with any bright ideas?
I can get into recovery, but I can't connect to the device via the pc to get at the files. well, that isn't quite true, I can see them if I use a pgr called DROIDEXPLORER, I can copy from the device to the PC but not back the other way. So I tried to edit the build.prop locally and push it back (using droidexplorer) but the one on the device just stays the same with the edit above in it...
I'm now considering flashing a new FW as the only way to get the tab going again.
Any help?
followed instructions and still couldn't write to sd card with ES File Explorer. Can't tell with homepage redraw... What's bad is that this killed my internet connection. After rebooting, the status bar shows me connected to either my home wifi or my H+ service provider but I can't access the internet nor my local network... Restarting the 7.7, deleting the relevant lines, restarting my router/cable modem (still have internet on my main comp and ipad) all didn't help.
I guess I have to reflash my 7.7.
OK, so after a sleepless night (the little one was on full song) I reflashed my Tab this morning and way hey! It is back in the land of the living.
Pheww.
Jade, I think the hack to keep the homescreen in memory might need to be revisited? I followed the instructions to the letter. After applying the hack the device just would not come to life. It wasn't a case of screen-off, device on either. I plugged it in to a PC and there was nothing. The only way I could get the PC to see it was to start it in recovery.
Maybe it is just a combination of things on my machine and I guess these things can just happen, but I think it might be worth checking?
I'm totally happy with flashing now though
Just thought this could use a bump since it was so helpful to me.

It worked for me (Galaxy Tab 7.7 wifi) so you probably entered something wrong... Actually I realised that after entering "ro." the keyboard inserted a space after the dot, so it looked like this: ro. HOME_APP_ADJ=0 and it is like this: ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=0 see the difference?
I realised right away and fixed it. If I were you I would try it again....
It works for me alright, I don't know if at the end uses too much ram and slows down other things, if it does I'll just delete that line and that's it....
Thanks to Jade W. good idea...

Nope, just tried it again, result dead tablet... My tablet definitely does not like this line in build.prop
So, I would advise caution with this line. Take a backup before trying it or get comfortable with reflashing.

HAs anyone got any bright ideas about pushing the original build.prop file back? ADB push just gives me "failed to copy 'build.prop' to '/system/build.prop': Read Only File
I'd rather just get the correct one in there than re-flash...
I use SearchMarket to find and install Kindle app from Android Market on the rooted Nook touch. What is annoying is that the Kindle app has a sliding effect when turning pages. The screen would flashes multiple times during page turning.
Is there a version of Kindle app that has no sliding effects? Which version do you guys use?
3.1.0.30
Flashes only once did not have to configure anything.
Edit: wrong, i do have it just didn't notice it until compared to other readers. Sorry about false information.

I know this is old, but if the OP or anybody else is still wondering about this, I found that the 2.0.5.103970165 version of Kindle does not have any page-turning animation effects. It does however seem to completely refresh the screen with every page turn but to me it's still nicer than the animation.
You can download the apk from here: freewarelovers.com/android/download/temp/1311093850_Kindle-2.0.5.103970165.apk (sorry, I don't seem to be able to post hyperlinks)
Hey, I've had a similar problem
I'm French and do not own an american credit card, so I can't buy from B&N, and I do have to buy books from amazon for new releases
The page turning effects ARE a big drawback though
Couldn't we use the screen refresh hack? (I've read about it somewhere but can't find it anymore) people are able to watch movies on the nook touch so it should be able to display animations in a non blinding fashion right. (maybe with a bit more battery drain but hey...)
I don't know enough to try this out though, any help from a more advanced user of rooted nook would be a blessing.

Here's what I'm trying to do. My Girlfriend is Dyslexic so the ability for a book read to read aloud is a big thing. But, I was messing around with talk back and it's actually kind of difficult to use. While using talk back it seems to take immense effort to do the simplest of tasks. So, is there a way for Google Books to read aloud, without having to have Talk Back enabled.
This seems kind of like a silly question, I shouldn't have to enable for the entire system to talk back to me when all I want is the book to be read back to me. Hopefully there is something I'm missing or an app that can enable it or something of the such. I'd really like to get her this tablet but this is kind of an important option.
Thanks for all your help!

I have that same option enabled as well. Do you have something special turned on somewhere in your accessability? I can get it to auto read if I turn on Talk Back, but I don't want Talk Back on, it forces you to double tap to do things and it's exceedingly hard to activate anything, plus I just don't want my whole system talking to me every time I click on something.

If it's anything like the kindle it depends on the book since some have separate licenses for audio books.

definitely dependant on the book. i was looking searching for the same solution as the OP and tried different books out. Some say "read aloud" in settings and others dont.
have you solved this problem yet?
i have the same one except i've had it before and it just disappeared yesterday. i don't know what i did. i'll give you 2 cases though when i didn't have it. first was with my nexus s. i just reset it and as soon as i installed the play books, i checked on the read aloud feature. it wasn't there! i played with the accessibility settings, uninstalled and reinstalled my svox TTS voice engine.. i did many things but it didn't work. i gave up. then one day it just reappeared. same thing when i got my nexus 7. i thought my device was just not compatible but then after a day or two, it reappeared. NOW, it's not there again. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT'S GOING ON but i need it back asap. i'm just gonna wait as usual. i just wish i have more idea on what triggers/controls it.
if anyone here knows, let me know.
It is triggered by the book, not all books can be read aloud.
Rob
Read books Aloud
Well I had the same issue one day I had the option to read aloud without talkback and the next day on the same book I did't. so I know it isn't the book.
I found another instance where people were having an issue with their books reading automatically and not wanting them to.
Here is what I did install light flow from the market and turn it on in accessibility an the option to read aloud will be in the book menu.
I know this isn't ideal, but it works.

Force Read Aloud with Tasker
I was having the same problem. Once I activated Tasker-JB in the Accessibility I was able to get read aloud on books that would allow before.
I used Nook Manager to root my Nook Glowlight V1 early this year. I love it, but I've been having a small problem that I haven't been able to figure out.
Most of my titles show up fine (using ReLaunch), but a few are garbled. . . most of the garbled ones display as "%t" (photo demonstrating this available via email if it's needed. . . I'm too new to post a link to the photo ).
But a few will show the author and then "%t", a few show "Unknown", and a few seem like just strings of characters.
I tried changing the text of the file names themselves. That doesn't seem to have any effect. I've looked at the metadata in Calibre, but I don't see anything that looks amiss. Frankly, I'm stuck, and that's why I need to ask this question! Could anyone point me toward a possible cause (or, even better. . . a solution)?
Thank you!

Hi Maneki!
I'd love to help, but I need a few more specifics.
1. Is your Nook Touch Glow on firmware 1.1.5, 1.2.0 or 1.2.1?
2. Are the problematic books signed with Adobe DRM?
3. How long have you been having this problem?
Later,

Then I believe this solves your problem AND provides a cause.
In the Advanced Settings menu of ReLaunch, there are several file association settings. Look around in there and see if anything works.
I actually got rid of ReLaunch quite a while back, and am currently using ADW with the Minimalist theme. I absolutely love it. But, if you need me to look around in ReLaunch, please post the .apk for me and I'll temporarily reinstall it.

I tested the stock Library, and the titles do show up there.
An important element of the problem, which thenookieforlife3 kindly diagnosed and I neglected to mention, is that I'm using ReLaunch! So the problem is specifically that they're not displaying correctly in ReLaunch, not that they won't display correctly at all.

I must have messed something up while playing with settings when I first rooted (honestly, as is probably obvious from this thread, the level of versatility is kind of over my head!). . . I poked at a few things, and then I just restored the ReLaunch settings to default, and the titles show up again.
Thank you so much; that was massively helpful!

This needs to be stickied.
I also bricked my phone on Wednesday when I selected this option, but I was only partially sure that it was to blame. I spent 2.5 hours on the phone with Motorola this morning, and went from a guy who barely spoke English up to a guy who was very-clearly in the USA, and they confirmed the issue and opened a bug ticket. Don't expect a fix anytime soon.

RTL is Right to Left.
Basically the option flips all things on android... so in the settings, as it reads from left to right, "wifi - on" the setting is reversed "on - wifi" sort of a setting meant for lefties.. or just those that like toggles on the left side instead of right.

I can't tell if you're trolling or being serious.
RTL is meant to make the whole phone more convenient for lefties. Your homescreen goes from being the leftmost screen to the rightmost.
Wait, no, it's actually meant to completely **** up all our devices. Yeah, that's it.

Luckly phone was too new and no refurbs out so they sent me a new one lol) but the digitizer and screen were cracked broken and bleeding. I was going to to fastboot since phone was stuck in camera mode for usb for helium back and no syncing programs setup yet but i tossed on my otg cable and plugged in a mouse and changed usb features, backed up apps to google drive the change usb mode and copied all my files off.
Hope that works for ya

I wish that would have fixed it, the system is responsive but 'System UI' crashes and there is 0 way to get out of it or access the system after that point. When you power on the phone you don't even make it to the lock screen it just dies.

My comment isn't relevant to this post but I just wanted to clear up the misconception about RTL. It isn't for lefties (I'm a lefty, it makes no difference to us), it's for languages that go from right to left, like Arabic. English, French, Spanish etc. go from left to right.

I really don't have a dog in this fight but heres where I got my info from, "While most of us are used to left-to-right text, menus, and whatnot, there are certainly users who’d prefer their smartphone or tablet to have right-to-left layouts. Of course, if your device’s system language is one that uses a right-to-left script (like Arabic, or Hebrew), the change from LTR to RTL is done automatically. However, Android allows you to force RTL layouts even when using a left-to-right language. "

So I'm not saying no or disagreeing, just saying that from that article, apparently RTL languages, once set in the settings automatically switch. I'll start source linking all my info from now on.
