Read aloud in Google books - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Here's what I'm trying to do. My Girlfriend is Dyslexic so the ability for a book read to read aloud is a big thing. But, I was messing around with talk back and it's actually kind of difficult to use. While using talk back it seems to take immense effort to do the simplest of tasks. So, is there a way for Google Books to read aloud, without having to have Talk Back enabled.
This seems kind of like a silly question, I shouldn't have to enable for the entire system to talk back to me when all I want is the book to be read back to me. Hopefully there is something I'm missing or an app that can enable it or something of the such. I'd really like to get her this tablet but this is kind of an important option.
Thanks for all your help!

Thanks for the quick reply and image. That's just the thing though, I don't have that option on my Nexus 7. Is there a spot you have to go to turn it on at? I'm not seeing it anywhere.

I have that same option enabled as well. Do you have something special turned on somewhere in your accessability? I can get it to auto read if I turn on Talk Back, but I don't want Talk Back on, it forces you to double tap to do things and it's exceedingly hard to activate anything, plus I just don't want my whole system talking to me every time I click on something.

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate your help! Seems a little silly that I can't do this.

If it's anything like the kindle it depends on the book since some have separate licenses for audio books.

definitely dependant on the book. i was looking searching for the same solution as the OP and tried different books out. Some say "read aloud" in settings and others dont.

have you solved this problem yet?
i have the same one except i've had it before and it just disappeared yesterday. i don't know what i did. i'll give you 2 cases though when i didn't have it. first was with my nexus s. i just reset it and as soon as i installed the play books, i checked on the read aloud feature. it wasn't there! i played with the accessibility settings, uninstalled and reinstalled my svox TTS voice engine.. i did many things but it didn't work. i gave up. then one day it just reappeared. same thing when i got my nexus 7. i thought my device was just not compatible but then after a day or two, it reappeared. NOW, it's not there again. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT'S GOING ON but i need it back asap. i'm just gonna wait as usual. i just wish i have more idea on what triggers/controls it.
if anyone here knows, let me know.

It is triggered by the book, not all books can be read aloud.
Rob

Read books Aloud
Well I had the same issue one day I had the option to read aloud without talkback and the next day on the same book I did't. so I know it isn't the book.
I found another instance where people were having an issue with their books reading automatically and not wanting them to.
Here is what I did install light flow from the market and turn it on in accessibility an the option to read aloud will be in the book menu.
I know this isn't ideal, but it works.

Force Read Aloud with Tasker
I was having the same problem. Once I activated Tasker-JB in the Accessibility I was able to get read aloud on books that would allow before.

If you lost the ability to see the mobile pages then you need to install the latest MT addition from Cyanogen. There was an issue with the first MT add on he put out and fixed it in the second one.
I recommend going back and re applying the MT add on and you should be able to see mobile pages again.
You can also D/L Google Maps 4.0 with built in Buzz support. Just go to the market, click on the downloads tab, and the update should be waiting for you!
Anyone knows why I don't have the update promted yet? Is it US only? (I'm oversea).
Also, if I go to buzz website on my N1, I can see the interface, but if I post a Buzz.. it keep spinning a small wheel in front of it, and it never completes (nor posts my Buzz)
Any ideea?
I got the same issue. Maybe it is because our gmail hasn't been updated with Buzz yet.
update google maps in the market
Anyone else find it subliminally retarded that Google puts the Nexus one behind the Iphone on its Buzz page ?
heh yeah, I noticed that myself...
However, here: http://www.google.com/intl/en/mobile/buzz/ there is an iPhone surrounded by 2 N1's.
Go figure.
I understand google though - people with androids will probably get buzz anyway in some future update (won't be surprised if it will be come a builtin app/link like google goggles) - but the real challenge is for them to get iPhone users to use it, pushing them more towards the google cloud.

click get buzz on you phone. you will be happy too see it has a nexus one first then a iphone, followed by another N1. if that helps you a bit lol
I'm quite liking buzz. It's so easy for me to see what people in my area are saying and I can just strike up a conversation with them.
Initially I thought 'How will they get people to leave Twitter to do this' then you realise pretty much everyone is already registered (I'm following people already who have never heard of Buzz!) it's just if they choose to use it.

After a few tries I got to post a buzz both from the page in the browser, and from google maps.
But, now I can't delete the two posts...
Lots of spinning wheels. Seems unfinished.
But I like the idea. Hope it will work better in the coming days

I had those issues too - read that it might have to do with the accepting terms thing not registered properly so I wiped my Browser cache and rebooted.
Seems to still do it but then later I'll see it was posted. Also seems to do it straight after a reboot, but then become sluggish. Still glitchy I guess

Edit - Just updated maps and the Buzz Layer thing seems to work better than the one via mobile google. What will be useful I think once it takes off, is that you can pop over to a place and look for any buzz about traffic or weather problems that people might post from a location.

Thanks. Reflashing the mt addon allowed me to see mobile pages again. Buzz works fine now.
I've updated my Maps application to version 4 via Market, but I am not seeing the Buzz layer in Maps.
I wonder is it because this is being rolled out on a country by country basis?
The buzz layer is not enabled by default, you need to press the options, and then choose layers->buzz.
The easiest way to check if your gmap version is correct is to go to options->about - it should be 4.0.0 (#4046).

Thanks. My Maps is of the version you have listed. However when I go to Layers, I do not see the Buzz layer available for selection. Maybe, like Navigation, this Buzz layer will be turned on for other countries bit by bit?
Anyway I'll wait and see how it goes.

Nexus 7 search result not clickable!

Does anyone notice this or it is just me?
When your search from the search bar or voice search, the web results pop up, but actually clicking at the titles or the links won't direct you to the browser until you hit a little bit lower, at the brief description area. MORE SERIOUSLY, is that, when you filter the results by choosing more->shopping, or video, or whatever, the results are not clickable for me. No new tabs will show up.
Could anyone please try the following, type or speak "wallet", go to shopping results, tap on any one of the image item. Anything happens?
Thank you so much

worked here first time. I am currently viewing a quite attractive Oakely Square O Perf Wallet after it linking through Chrome. But, it's $50 and I am in the UK!
PS I spoke 'wallet' using Google Now
Meaning that mine is screwed. But does it have anything to do with the OTA update in US, causing some unknown search issue?
Any more people to try this out? Especially who is in US
Thank you!
Worked for me.

Seems like if never enrolled in Now, your search is working fine.

That is also what happens to me, either opening two tabs or no tab at all. Drives me crazy. I hope people join me to report this to Google. It is definitely not me alone.
I'm having a far worse issue. I cannot open search results in any way on my Nexus 7. I've seen posts like this were you open 2 tabs in Chrome. I can't open anything!! Even clicking the description of the link doesn't work.
Similar issue here...
I have noticed pretty much the same issue on my Nexus 7. Sometimes clicking just below the title of the search result works. Sometimes clicking on the actual title works. Sometimes NOTHING is clickable. Very frustrating - especially when trying to show someone how cool Google Now is!!! My Nexus 7 is totally stock too..
Hopefully they will have a fix for this soon!

Well, this problem has gone from sporadic to consistent for me. Whenever I use the Google Now Widget to search for something and results are returned, I can't click on the results at all. I called Google Support and we tried clearing the cache and data the Google Search and Chrome apps and then did a Factory Data Reset. Nothing has been able to fix this for me. It totally seems like a software bug since generally everything else seems to function alright. Given this, I'm really surprised the Factory Data Reset didn't fix it for me.
Since I bought the Nexus 7 at Staples and I'm outside of the 14 day return policy (by just 1 darn day!!!), they said that they can't even exchange it for me. So now, I have to send it into Asus to have it "repaired".
Is anyone else having this issue?
For the record, I'm never buying anything electronic or of any significant value from Staples again!

I recently stumbled across this bug as well and chalked it up to being software related too. But whereas some people seem to have sporadic results, I can NEVER click my Google Now search results. I'm quite baffled that a factory reset didn't work and was actually about to do it myself, but if there's no guarantee that it'll solve the problem then it wouldn't be worth it. Honestly, I wouldn't send it to Asus to get it repaired because the issue might simply pop up again. I'm wondering if only a small minority is experiencing this problem though or if people just don't realize it yet (as I haven't really used much of Google Now). In any case, I hope this issue gets resolved soon.
EDIT: This must definitely be a software bug because I might have found a way to possibly resolve the issue. I activated Google Now, hit the menu button on the bottom right, went to "settings" then "privacy and accounts." Here, there should be an option for "Search on google.com." Mine was initially unchecked, but I simply checked the option again. Doing this, Google Now seems to now allow me to touch/click results. I should add that when I went back and unchecked the option, the issue did not return. So, regardless of what the option is set at for you guys, I would simply check or uncheck and try it seeing if that resolves the issue. I hope this works for others!
Sorry to bump this thread up again, but did this happen to work for anyone else?

I'm experiencing the same problems (can't click on standard web search results in Google Now, but can in Chrome). The above fix doesn't work for me (I don't have that showing up in my privacy settings on my Google Account, but then again I don't even have "search plus your world" available in my apps account yet).
Here's an interesting twist though: If I perform the following search in Google Now:
xda nexus 7 google now can't click on results
I can't click the results. However the first result will include "More results from forum.xda-developers.com". If I click that link, it's not only clickable, but the results on the next page are all clickable.
Again, I'm on a Google Apps account, fwiw.

One other interesting point: navigating through the Google Now results using an external keyboard (just cursoring up and down), I can select and enter any result without problems.
I think I may have figured out how to get search results clickable again...
1) Go into Settings->Privacy and accounts
2) Uncheck "Show recent searches"
3) Back out to the home screen
4) Try your search again and you should be able to click on the search results
This seems to do the trick for me. Give it a try and let us know if it works for you guys.

Fix Does not work for me
Still can't click on results.
I'm wondering if it has something to do with having a second browser (Dophin) installed.
Maybe tablet does not know which to use?
When clicking on OTHER links tablet asks whether to complete the action with Chrome or Dolphin. Obviously when pressing on a Google now result that question does not pop up and the results are not clickable.
Maybe I will uninstall Dolphin and see if that helps
Thank you for the fix

It works but I was confused by your directions. From settings, go to Accounts Google, then Search, which then takes you to Privacy & Accounts.
This was very frustrating problem. I called Google Nexus Tech Support and talk about a useless rep. I can't believe others aren't complaining about the same problem.

Using hotwords when NOT in Google now

So I am finding conflicting information online about this functionality. Essentially when I would like to do is say a hotword (the default is "google") and the phone would launch a search. As far as I can tell this can only be initiated from within Google Now, which to be honest is almost pointless. Given that you need to touch the screen to launch Google Now its just as easy to hit the little microphone icon. Is it possible to launch the Google Now search without actually being in Google Now? It would be great if I could simply roll over after I get up in the morning and say a hotword which wakes the phone and launches the search app.

You are correct, that's how it is supposed to work. The phone Googling every time somebody said Google would be out of control.
It's probably possible somehow, but the constant listening for voice input would reduce your battery to a potato.

The microphone constantly enabled while endlessly comparing the input to listen for a keyword?
Absolutely, yes.
Ok, so what about if that only happened when it was charging? For instance, when I am sleeping I leave the phone on the nightstand next to my bed and it is plugged in. Alternatively if you have it setup in your car so that it is charging while you drive. Both instances are ideal for when you would need truly "hands free" access to search functionality.

Tasker Users on Pixel

I am a relatively new Tasker user but I'm already a Tasker addict. I have like 8 - 10 plug-ins and no clue how to even wrap my brain around what I can do with them all! I do have about 20 profiles already and absolutely love it.
I thought maybe we could have a thread in here devoted to using Tasker with our Pixels. Some phone specific things may apply, considering our Android version and the existence of our Assistant. I'll share some profiles I have and feel free to share ones you find helpful!
1) When I go to Target, it automatically opens up Cartwheel app and my shopping list app, turns off GPS, and increases screen on time to 2 minutes before timing out. When I leave Target, it sets things back to normal and texts my wife that I'm leaving Target.
2) At work, my phone goes to vibrate mode and my WiFi/data are turned off along with location. I can't use my phone during work anyway (I teach) so it just kills my battery all day usually due to bad signal in my room.
3) If I text "FINDME" to my phone, it turns up the volume, blasts a song, turns on the screen and the flashlight. Upon finding it, a quick shake back and forth resets everything to normal.
4) My night mode turns sounds all off and turns on Blue Light filter.
5) If I open up Google Maps, my GPS goes to high accuracy mode and volume is turned up.
This is an awesome thread idea. I'm going to be messing around with it so I'll post once I come up with some good ones. Interesting to see what other people use it for.
For number 5 is it possible to have GPS turn on when opening google maps and then turn it back off when I fully quit the app? I keep my GPS off at all times.

Absolutely, you just toggle "Location Services" instead of "Location Mode". You'll need the free plug-in "secure settings" to accomplish this. That's a tremendous app, so I'd get the pro version if you don't mind the $1.50 charge. It opens up so many possibilities.
Speaking of which, I hope to see some awesome integration with the Google Assistant. Between the Assistant and Tasker, that would be an amazing duo.

Tasker does have a free trial though. It's not available on the Play Store but you can download the APK on the developer's site. You can Google it and try it out. That's how I got addicted! Bought it within 12 hours. Haha.

Haha yup.I just got it. Watching YouTube tutorials now to learn the basics
6) One of my other profiles is when I plug in my headphones, it launched my music app (Gonemad Media Player) and turns the media volume to the level I like. Upon unplugging, the media volume is restored to normal and Tasker kills the app.

How specifically did you use Tasker to turn on the blue light filter?
Hm. I opened secure settings and saw this..
but root works for multiple other apps.
I love using having Tasker on my Pixel! I still haven't made as many plugins as I need to but once I get my head wrapped around its full potential I'll certainly make more tasks.
Right now I have: Off Mobile Data @ Home & On Wifi
Lower media volume after 10pm for my mobile games.
Turn off all sorts of things like bluetooth, wifi, location, when battery is below 25 (kinda defeats the purpose of android's built in power saver right?)
I like your Google Maps idea, and I think I'll do something like that too.
Hope to learn more task tips on this thread!

Systemless root.
Try the fix here, I believe it's the one that worked for me last time I had this issue.
https://dammit.nl/p/962
Edit.
Btw, I haven't had this issue since the original version of SuperSU was released for our phones.
Are you using an old version of root?
Or maybe it's because I'm on custom ROM's lately (selinux = permissive)

Tasker + Secure Settings = automation heaven.
I want to get into AutoApps someday too. Just haven't really sat down and learned the extra functionality though.
Been waiting for better OK Google functionality to come around before I bother learning anything heavy duty.
As it is, I have six Tasker profiles that meet most of my needs.

Secure settings hasn't been updated in a long time and that's what the problem is here. It doesn't know about systemless root so it looks in the wrong place for it. There is a work around for it but I don't have a link handy at this time. Some say it works for them and some say it doesn't. I haven't tried it yet so I can't say one way or the other. If I can find a link to the thread, I'll post it here unless somebody else does first.
I used to use it all the time for turning on GPS whenever Maps or Ulysee Speedometer was started. It worked great.
Also use Tasker to return to the home screen after hanging up a call. I always hated that hanging up the phone would return me to the phone app and I'd have to press the home or back button to get out of it. A small annoyance, I know but it was just one of those things I got sick of and with necessity being the mother of invention, I took care of it with Tasker.

AutoApps is worth it. Opens up so much more. I listen to music all day long and had a profile made up where you could text me "#current" and it would respond back what I was listening to or if no music was playing. Then I found AutoSpotify. So, if nothing was playing you could text "#listento" and a song/artist/album, it would check to make sure headphones were in and that I wasn't in a call, then open whatever was suggested in Spotify. I primarily use Pandora but create playlists in Spotify so had another profile that I could long press volume down and it would pull the track info from Pandora, give me a list of my current playlists on Spotify, and give me an option to add it to one of them or create a new playlist.
I started noticing that I was missing texts (I would get the notification sound but would have no notification and no new text in Textra) so I scrapped anything that needed to intercept new texts. Created a little pop-up with %SMSRF and %SMSRB and sure enough it would display a new text but there'd be no trace of it on my phone.

Look at this, worked for me.

Most of my Tasker use with my previous phone was to save battery for longer standby times, or to automate routine tasks. I've been using the phone for a couple months without Tasker, but these are probably what I'd like to put back on first.
1) Automatically turn off Wifi when not plugged in after a set time with the screen off. I've had the Pixel chew through my battery a few times from accidentally leaving Wifi on, so this is the biggest one to start using again.
2) Turn autobrightness on or off depending on light sensor reading when screen turns on. I'm generally not a fan of autobrightness, so I had my prior phone use a set brightness in lower-light situations and to turn on autobrightness when the light sensor reading exceeded a pre-selected value.
3) Turn off Bluetooth after set parameters. My previous phone couldn't cast to the TV, so my prior routine will need to change to allow casting.
4) Turn on Bluetooth in the car and launch navigation or another app. My prior phone had a phone-specific car dock that I used to launch the car-specific task, so I'll need to come up with some other way to determine the phone is in the car.
5) Automatically sync when plugged in and connected to home Wifi. I have sync turned off, so I just have Tasker automatically sync when charging at home.
6) Toggle 4G LTE on or off to save battery when not needed. I used Gravitybox for this sort of thing previously, so right now I'm not sure what I could use for changing the cellular settings on the Pixel.

You can use AutoTools. Worth the $1 or whatever it costs.
7) If the screen is on, the phone is in landscape mode, and Google Maps is open, the phone kicks into driving mode (not all my cars in the family have BT so I went a different route so I can use this wherever with my universal phone mount). This increases volume, turns on GPS, increases screen brightness, and allows me to wave my hand past the proximity sensor to turn off the screen (not locked though, so it will still open hands-free with my trusted voice plus OK Google). That last part required a shell command and root access. It's awesome though.

Remove the bleepin Google Assistant from the 6P

It was with great horror that I discovered that Google is now forcing the effin' Google Assistant down our throats. Home long press now launches this abomination of an app. Quickly figured out how to disable the crapware, but nowong press of home does nothing. So Google, of you are reading this....
I DON'T WANT TO BE TALKING TO MY PHONE ALL THE TIME, I HAVE A LIFE AND PEOPLE TO TALK TO.
Is there a way to recover the old functionality? I want long press to launch the old style Google app. If no, what is the version of the last update that does not include this POS software? I had not updated for a while and now this...
Apologies for fuming, it is just so freaking invasive on Google's part to ot even ask if I want to opt in.
PS setting ro.opa.eligible_device=false does NOT do the trick. Grrrr, this is getting more annoying by the minute
Someone on Reddit says you can change your language to US Virgin Islands to get the old now on tap back if that's what you're wanting. I haven't tried this myself though.

Yes, this works, the original source may be here
https://android.gadgethacks.com/how...ndroid-device-switch-back-google-now-0174676/
Unfortunately editing the build.prop does not seem to do the trick for me. I have to wonder how long before Google screws up that workaround.
I am curious, is there ANYONE out there who wants to ALWAYS talk to their phone and have the phone talk to them. Say you are in the middle of a meeting and want to quickly check on something. What is Google thinking? Or am I missing something?

You can still type in searches using the Google search bar without talking. I prefer Google Assistant to the old functionality but I guess everyone uses their phone differently. Most people likely consider GA an enhancement rather than an intrusion like you do. Many people were unhappy that it was only offered officially on the Pixel but you can't please everybody.
All you have to do is turn GA off within settings.

Sadly this is not true. When you disable it in settings and long press home it pops up and says, Google Assistant is currently disabled, would you like to enable it? Options for yes or no. Yes pops up with assistant and no just disabled the window with no further actions. It doesn't revert to the old now on tap functionality.
i want to delete Google Assistant permanently, any clue ?
I'm surprised this thread doesn't have more attention. Before I had assistant I was trying to get it early on my device but now I am trying to go back to now on tap just because of the ease of use and time it takes to get to google.
The best workaround I found was this SwipeUp utility app. You can press and hold either your home button or fingerprint scanner to open straight to the Google app instead of the popup assistant (which is basically a blank screen until you say something or press on the keyboard symbol to type a search) it works really well.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.AdrianCampos.swipeuputility
No solution's to this yet? This is absurd.
@tolol @applePhx in this thread someone recommends deleting the Google Home App folder from /system using twrp to get completely rid of Google Assistant. Haven't tested it though
