It really depends what you want, doesn't it?
If you want something stable where everything works, you're not going to flash ICS on it, are you? Me, I wanted to play around with something that I knew was still in the alpha/beta stages of development, so I took the plunge. I find that the 02_09_Hashcode build on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1411895 does all that I need it to at the moment, so I'm happy with it. If you follow that thread, though, you will find people that don't like it, people that want HW video acceleration, people that won't run it until it runs netflix... etc. It all depends on your desires/needs.
Sure, I'd like to be able to have the original reader on it - the margins on the reader app are so big a single sentence spans multiple pages. But if that was too much of a bother, I'd go back to stock wouldn't I?
CM7 Whistlestop build(SoS)
CM7 SoS. Solid as a rock. HW accel works, hd video, and ad hoc wifi works. Good sh*t. With ICS theme, ADW EX, and the removal of a few unnecessary APKs, it's BY FAR the best out right now.
i use stock just because i kinda like the Carousel launcher. until they port it to ics i'm sticking with stock. i don't want to use the kindle android app. lol

KindleFireUtility is pretty easy to deal with if you're not comfortable running adb shell commands. It will install the most recent version of BurritoRoot and TWRP and does many other things as well. Just be sure to read the instructions in the thread well or you may end up posting one of the many "bricked my KF while trying to install TWRP with KFU" threads you'll see around here

It depends on what do you expecting from your ROM.
CM9 builds are more polished and tablet looking than other, but don't have video HW acceleration support and netfix.
CM7 builds are bit more laggy (if we are talking about UI animations) but you can play videos from webpages.
Barebones are looking similiar to ICS UI, and is very fast but you have to install everything on it (it's just naked system).
I didn't using MIUI/Kand ROMS so cant tell anything about them
Cm7 sos I got flash to work =p

Got to have my Netflix account up and working. CM7 SoS is just great. Still, I can't wait for CM9 to get video working. I understand they're almost there.
For me, the MoDaCo rom is the perfect fit. You get the "stock" experience- probably the best app compatibility you're going to find. In addition, you have several tweaks and the Market preinstalled.
Having been around the block a few times on other tablets and Android phones, I love the bleeding edge ROMs. But if a device is your daily driver, stability and compatibility are important. The MoDaCo rom gives that.
Now, give ICS a few more months, and it may be a different story.
Everything everyone said about the ROMs here is correct and good advice.
I'd just add if I was starting out with CM7, I'd try the barebones version. That wasn't yet out when I installed it and I had to uninstall all the unneeded apps manually. If I were to start now, I'd use barebones, for sure.
Otherwise they are the same.
CM7 is very good. You will like it, I bet.

Similar experience here. I was on CM7 sos, then tried ICS. In the interim, Barebones came out, so I rolled with that.
I prefer what I'm used to with Android, so CM7 is a good fit for me.
Someone did mention that the UI was slightly laggy, but I've had a better experience with CM7 using Raven's kernal than I did with ICS with whatever kernel came with it.

I'm tired of my phone being too slow, responding too slow to touch, lagging..
I have the android 2.1 OS on my HTC Hero CDMA and I was wondering if there were any general recommendations to speed up my phone.
I would be willing to put on a hacked OS, root it, or do whatever it takes as long as the phone is still fully functional. I'm pretty new with this stuff so bear with me.

I rooted, installed CM6, my phone was totally transformed.
Cm 6 - rc1 is a good start simply amazing going from stock. I get 0 lag. I must warn you always do a nandroid back up before changing ROMs. Its basically a clone of your phone's software and settings allowing you to recover from a bad issue.

+1 to all previous posts.
The Hero running out of the box stock with Sense is really pretty slow. I liked Sense, but I like a faster device better.
Follow the well documented instructions found on this site for rooting the Hero and then play around with different ROMs until you find one that fits you.
Personally I've been running Darchdroid and don't plan on ever switching again.
I don't even know what lag is any more.
Thank you for your responses.
Is there a link for a tutorial or forum topic about where to download CM6 and how to install it?

The problem with installing something like CM is that those ROMs are missing a lot of the stuff that you are used to using. And you might spend a long time downloading, and looking for the apps you need. I found CM to be not much faster and a pain in the ass in some ways (the dialer is weak, same with the keyboard, etc.)
I know people are going to start pointing to all the apps you can download to replace what is there, but it's a pain, and time consuming.
If anything I would try one of Fresh's ROMs, which have Sense and most of the HTC apps. And his Toast versions allow for overclocking as well.
On another note, your Hero should not be slow. Have you tried a factory reset?? I have used slow Heros before, but when they are working properly there should be almost no lag with the stock 2.1 OS.
The kernel is under the thread cdma android development and as far as cm6 u can overclock as well with a different kernel and as for aosp vs sense its just user preference tryem both c which one u like best and stick with what works for u that's what there here for both are outstanding

That's the beautiful thing about CM6 though is the customization. I know its personal choice, but I actually love the CM6 Phone Dialer (one of the guys over on the theme board customized the background for in call to be a nice cyan color other than green) and like the AOSP keyboard moreso than the Sense Keyboard. You can however, install a variety of HTC_IME keyboards and get that same Sense functionality on CM6.
I only do a new nightly every few days and it might take me... 10 minutes or so to get my phone setup. That includes a Full Wipe, ROM Flash, Kernel Flash, Circle Battery Flash and now a Phone Dialer Flash. I connect to my wifi and the Market downloads all of my apps for me and I restore my settings with ADW Backups. Logging into an app every now and then doesn't bother me after I've flashed a new ROM.
This is an "to each his own" situation and I did use FreshROM for quite some time before making the switch. To me, I don't plan on looking back. I may be switching to the T-Mobile G2 when it's released and as soon as CM is made available for it I'll be rooted and running it in no time.

How do you get the market to automatically download your apps? Is it another app or backup? It won't even save all of the apps I had downloaded last time. It only seems to save around 8.
I understand that different ROMs can be in varying degrees of completion and bug fixes. Ive been flashing ROMs since my HTC Fuze on WinMo 6.1 so I get that there can be things that look great but don't work. But I'm looking at all these nook color Honeycomb videos on YouTube and they seem to work fine. I have VEEEERY basic tablet needs. Browser, email, pdf reading, nook and kindle reading and a few news related apps. So, am I missing something? Are they really all that buggy?
Thanks, if anyone can explain this for me.
All honeycomb roms are buggy as they are pretty much creating them blind. As Google will not release the source code. It's amazing at how far they've gotten without it but it is still not anywhere near CM7. If your going to use a rom make sure it's CM7.

What would be the latest ACTUAL official release that is the most problem free?
So all the Honeycombs are gonna be buggy? Even just for the stuff I use? (browser, kindle, nook, news apps, pdf, etc?)

There are a few CM7 based roms but they are out of date and mostly abandoned. The most problem free release would be the 7.1 RC.
Yes, unfortunately it is the sad truth but honeycomb is kind of overkill for a 7 inch screen. So I don't feel too bad about it.

7.1 is a release candidate that means it is ready for day to day use but might have a couple of bugs but it includes improvements such as deep sleep that really save your battery by a ton but whatever release you want to pick is up to you. You could try them both for a couple days each and see what one you like better.

Nah, there's really only the CM7. Phiremod is nothing more than a themed CM7. Nobody's really released any groundbreaking actual ROM for NC. Which is fine, really - because CM7 is damned good for the NC, and it's plenty customizable and themeable (start poking around UOT Kitchen).
What there *are*, though, are different bootloaders and ROMs for the SD install or the EMMC (NC memory, overwrites the original BN software), and how they're loaded. Frankly, I just went with verygreen's SD-size-agnostic loader, picked a CM7 nightly, and haven't looked back.
So I'm new to the Android community. I only just joined when I got my Kindle Fire. I've heard that "Cyanogenmod 7" can be put on the Fire. I've looked on their site, and I have a vague idea of what it is, but not the full picture, so could someone explain to me what it is, and what good it would do to get it on my Kindle Fire?
Thanks.

I think I'm going to give it a go. Just one question. The kindle fire has no buttons, so when I install CM7, the default bottom bar that is used for navigation on the KF will surely be gone, is there a solution to this, and you think it'll be a problem? EDIT: Oh, and does CM7 come with root access by default?
this would be a good point to start:

and read,read,read to avoid problems
the navigation is no problem - saw pictures where it is integrated in the bar from cm7 at the right side
you need a additional app to regulate the loudness
and i think cm7 comes rooted (i have never used it)
read the above thread - all you need is in there
good luck !

It's been about 4 or 5 months since I flashed CM7 on my Kindle Fire and I am having some problems with it rebooting spontaneously (at least I haven't noticed any patterns) and some slight lag in my launcher loading apps in files and sometimes even uninstalling apps (GOex Launcher). I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem, mainly with rebooting randomly on CM7, or if I did something wrong when flashing it?
Also, if there's been a newer release of CM for the Kindle that I overlooked or missed, that could also explain the problem as well, I think...
Any thoughts, comments, or experiences would be helpful. Thanks.
Also, I've noticed a bit more posts than a few months ago about CM9 for KF. Has anyone had the experience of comparing the two? Is one more stable now than the other? I was told (at the time I flashed) that CM7 was more stable but am wondering if that's still the case. If you've used both or particularly had a great experience with one over the other, I'd like to hear what you think.

I am currently running AOKP Build 35 by OxD34D, and it is probably the best ROM I have every run on any of my Android devices. Everything is super solid, virtually no bugs. I say this, however, my experience with CM7 is limited on this device. I would say from the forums it would seem that CM7 and CM9 are very similar as far as stability goes. A lot of the thanks goes to the kernel devs who have made great strides in getting this device to where it is now. So make sure to give them some thanks for their works as well.

I'm running gedeROM (I think that's how its spelled) CM9 and its friggin amazing. Blows CM7 out of the water, IMO.
I think the general consensus is that the CM9 based ROMs are better than the CM7 ROMs at this point. They are not perfect, but neither was CM7, which don't forget, is really a phone OS, not a tablet OS. The launchers are better and I think the app support is better as well.

HWA works for any ICS based ROM (CM9 or AOKP) as long as it has the 3.x kernel, which I think pretty much all of them do now. While there are still some random issues (looks like more app-centric (HBO Go and Hulu+ especially)), it tends to work well for most folks with Netflix and YouTube HD. It does seem to help if you do a full clean on your device (factory reset, both caches, system) before switching ROMs.

Actually you can get Hulu+ to work with the latest kernel. Search the forums for Hulu, and someone made a modified version that bypasses the device not supported screen. I even have swype working on it too. At this point there's no reason not to use ICS.

Actually you can get Hulu+ to work with the latest kernel. Search the forums for Hulu, and someone made a modified version that bypasses the device not supported screen. I even have swype working on it too. At this point there's no reason not to use ICS.

I would recommend updating your FireFireFire bootloader and recovery and then trying Hashcodes CM9 ROM.

I think the gedeROM is the best at the moment.
but don't forget shut down in recovery or push the power button for 10 sec. before the battery is dead.
with all the rom's with kernel 3.0
Exactly what the thread title says...
As most of you should already be aware I have a gingerbread build that I try to provide something close to a monthly update on (plus or minus a few days). What I would like to know tonight is if y'all would like something similar with ICS?
Just like the gingerbread builds this won't have a lot of progression and I won't be trying to really create anything so much as compile y'all something (hopefully stable) to use if you so choose.
Assuming the answer to the first question is yes, do y'all have a preference for the build (cm9, aokp, etc)?
A release candidate of CM9 would be nice or if there's an ICS rom of ParanoidAndroid, then that would be great as well, I like having proper tablet UI for apps.
Has hash already updated his CM9 kernel?
ice cold sandwich by Lord Clocken From the HTC dhd trend is an aokp ice cold sandwich ,it has great features like kill all back button.

Every enhancement
the sg7 enhancement, linaro, supercharge, oc'ed kernal
and nothing else.
Base it on the least flashy ROM. I want to change, and add in things as I see fit, and I want the most basic version of android to do it from. I want it the fastest it can go, so all the enhancements and nothing else added in.
You can port sense rom to our Kindle???
All of the roms I have tried have these really annoying bugs. In the ROM I have now, the WIFI keeps dropping, even when i'm in the middle of a download.
If you guys can make a simple, stable ROM without all the bells and whistles (swipe left, themes, etc), that would make me (and a lot of other people) very happy.

With a little bit of tweaks I'm pretty sure we can use the newer JB kernel (they're both 3.y based but the newer one has the working charge indicator and screen driver.

This is sort of where I was already leaning; was considering basing something off of the loosethiskin builds that TWA was providing before cm10 but I wanted some opinions first as just like my cm7 rom I won't be the one running it (I'm using cm10 and it's going to remain that way)

No; others may be capable and or willing to do this. I personally don't touch binary ports; partly cause I don't want to and partly cause I don't know how to do binary ports (I haven't researched it do to the fact that I just didn't want to do it; source code for me)

I haven't experienced any of those issues but one thing I can point out is wifi issues are most likely kernel related; I'm most definitely not a kernel dev so anything I do will have something close to hashcodes current kernel (assuming it won't work as is)
Hi Sblood,
Funny, I was just thinking about this today, wondering if anybody that's capable is willing to take the time to do this. While I'm pretty much satisified with my JB rom, I really like ICS and I was very happy with twa_priv's CM9 builds.
I watch a lot of video from CNN and that's flash, the JB roms are finally giving me pretty good performance with this but I also like to watch video from ESPN and I haven't figured out a way to get that to work. With ICS, it prompts you to choose a player to watch the videos, like MX Player or Dice Player, with JB, it just tells me that the content is unavailable. That's probably the biggest thing I miss from ICS. I still keep a nandroid of twa's last CM9 release under a different gmail address and update any apps from Play Store every couple of weeks and then I OD on ESPN vids & Flash stuff, tonight I had 17 apps to update. LOL
For me, it's a tradeoff of JB Google Now for ICS ESPN vids and I'd rather have ESPN videos. So, if you could use twa's CM9 build as a base and hook in Hashcode's newer kernels, say on a monthly basis, that would be awesome & most appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike T

Sorry I've been busy and interest actually seemed much lower than I would have expected so it's been a somewhat lower priority.
I would still love to get it done (if for no other reason than we don't really have a stable/buildable version of ICS) but as it stands I've been having a few issues getting the ICS device repo updated to use the current kernel but I have been trying at least some.
I have to remind you it's the holiday season as well.
A good, stable, release candidate ICS ROM? I can see the appeal. I'd definitely give it a whirl. I'm starting to get tired of instability on a lot of ROMs.

You mean report bugs and stuff? Well, they wouldn't exactly be called bugs, more instability. For example, the android browser self closing itself every now and then.

That's a joke right; it's been 5 days since you asked this previously, it's still the holiday season and I haven't said anything in regards to something working so it must be I'm just not sure I get the humor in it...
Admittedly I probably shouldn't have created this thread til I had made some more progress but the goal was to find out if people were even interested in ICS in the first place. As I have stated this is still on my project list but let's be serious for a moment; how high of a priority do you really think back tracking to a previous version is? (I'll give you a clue: it's not).
I can tell you this; syncing cm9 and the old Kfire-Android local manifest for it doesn't build (and that's with the old kernel branch), it's not as simple as sync a bunch of folders and compile; I have to actually dig into the code of several repos to sort this out.
Lastly consider that my primary role is as a recovery dev; you know the term 'the plate is full', well I have a platter over here...
Not directly related but on the subject of recovery development; this is where most of my time has gone as of late.
I'd like to see an updated ICS but if it doesn't happen......oh well......I'll wait
.....when you hit the walls of sanity, you have no-where to go.....
Yea I'll wait too. And it was a joke. :c
How about a ROM with similar battery life as the stock Amazon one? Every custom ICS or JB ROM I have tried has not been awesome for battery life. Especially in sleep mode.
I'd like to see a honeycomb ROM that wold be pretty neat
