[GPS FIX] GPS Fix for all* roms 4/18 - Captivate Android Development

Who this is for - anyone whose GPS has long lock times, and is inaccurate in navigation.
This SHOULD work with all 2.3+ roms (that includes ICS). If it doesn't work for you or provides consistently poor results, please post and let's see if we can figure out why
What it does - replaces /system/etc/gps.conf with the modified version that has much more servers and various tweaks. Please note some tweaks made sacrifice accuracy for speed.
Results - I'm able to consistently get locks within 5 sec and ~10m with multiple sats. Even indoors, results are similar.
Many (including non captivate users) have reported much improved results as well.
How to use it:
Backup your old gps.conf (located in /system/etc) in case you prefer your old configuration. But you can always flash your rom again to get it back as well
Download the gps fix (Updated with 8 NTP servers) -- http://dl.dropbox.com/u/17383148/GPS_mod(8NTP).zip to SD Card
Reboot into CWM and flash
Reboot and enjoy a fast, awesome GPS
NOTE - first lock can take much longer that normal. Don't be surprised if it takes over 1 min. Results should improve from there. Should get ~ 10 sec locks, with multiple satellites.
Still not getting the results you want? Try another modem. KG3 is working great for me. This is a great site that has plenty more CM modems you can try out
UPDATE 4/18 : The GPS mod has been edited so that it now has 8 NTP servers. If you feel the old (classic?) configuration was working great for you, it's still up here
Commentary on screenshots: 1 -- Indoors w/ fix and about ~25 sec (cold start). 2 -- outdoors w/ fix and about ~10 sec (cold start). 3 -- outdoors NO fix and about ~15 seconds (cold start). Indoors with no fix could not be completed as I was not able to get a consistent lock with a cold start.

Non-captivate users -- You will have to edit the gps.conf file yourself in order to provide the most accurate results (since I do not know where you live). Xenova's post has some good instructions you can follow.
also read this post.

Finally! I spent all day yesterday looking for solutions to gps issues, will try this immediately and post feedback.
Update:
Gps test:6 sats in view,5 in use,accuracy 40ft
Before:1 sat,1 in use,accuracy 200ft
Rom:Team ICSSGS RC4.2
Modem:UGJL2

my GPS fix is highly recommended too.
REMOVED- didnt work for cm9
it also replaces files in "vendor/etc/" and files in "vendor/bin" file as well.
Any files in the Vendor folder (in stock roms) are carrier tweaks. AKA Vendor tweaks. and will supercede any files in the system/etc or system/bin folders.

This is a must-try for me.
ROM: Teamhacksung CM9 build16

I have a captivate running CM9 (build 16), and decided to give it a try. It has historically been a "fair" GPS captivate, mostly working, never well. CM9 it would not work at all. I walked out of our building with it as flashed from CM9, waited 5 minutes, nothing.
Flashed the one in the OP, walked back outside (about 5 minutes elapsed so not a lot of change in constellation), and did not even get to where I had stood before and it was locked.
One data point does not a trend make, but it was a pleasant surprise.
TRusselo: Had seen yours, but it was much more intrusive in terms of files changed and I had less faith that it was compatible with CM9. Is it?

I tried his and I get an error installation aborted.
---------- Post added at 02:18 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:12 PM ----------
The gps still can't get a fix on me using google maps.

Linwood - try getting a lock again. As noted, first lock can take significantly longer. Try more tests to see if it improves.
Trusselo - never heard about yours. Can you please give more info about yours and compatibility with roms?

Make sure for your first test you're outdoors with a clear sky view to make sure your first lock is able to complete. Should get better from there

the effin gps changes 2 copies of each file. (second copy in vendor folder eplained above), no idea about compatibility with CM, dont like it.
huh turns out ICS/CM needs different install-binary.

@ mike.canovas - ive already expained more about mine than the OP of the thread did about his. If you want to try it. TRY IT. if you are curious, LOOK INSIDE IT. It worked great for people on gingerbread.

It did get a lock in about 3 mins I did a second test and It took about the same time.

Hm. Try trusselo's fix. If what he says is right, you may have some vendor files overriding it. What rom are you running?

Tried that one used gps and got nothing not even the gps icon showed up im rebooting now to see if that solves it.
Btw if it don't work how can I revert the changes made by your zip?

To fix his, you're going to have to reflash the rom. Unless you backed up the vendor files changed

JI2 (Vibrant's Sept. ROM) GPS Files

Hey all,
So I flashed Vibrant's JI2 to my Captivate today, and it didn't go so good... HOWEVER -- I took off all of the GPS files I could and put them in a ZIP. I don't know how to make a valid update.zip file, so I was hoping someone smarter than me could do that Then the rest of us could try out the latest "GPS fix" the Vibrant people are enjoying, perhaps?
not bad. i just pushed the files over. it locked in 2secs and was accurate to 50 meters(use to be 200 or more) i need to take a test drive with it.

50 meters is terrible! That is 164 feet... it should get down to 16 feet / 5 meters.
I just got done pushing them over via adb myself with JH7... looks good so far. Needs some serious track testing, though.
I found this link on how to make an update.zip:
http://www.londatiga.net/it/how-to-create-android-update-zip-package/
Took a short drive and no offroading here. 50 is better than 200 and i was in my apartment.

We need DG to incorporate this on his SRE. That would be awesome.

Hrm... I noticed this update.zip does not have a meta_inf/com/google/android script, like all of the other GPS update.zip files I have. Is it needed?
Hmmmm....it should. Lemme take a look....
Edit: You're right. I repackaged it and updated my other post with the new zip. Let me know if it works or not. Thanks.
I'm not seeing any improvement over JH7 with these files, and the included agpsd does not appear to run at all. Are you sure your lock in 2s was from a cold start, and not just using data from a prior session?

It's quite obvious that there is something deeper going on than just these files.

I noticed our Captivates have a /system/bin/gpsd directory, but I couldn't find one on the Vibrant.. only agpsd existed. The other "GPS fix" updates had gpsd/ directories... I guess the Vibrant does things quite differently? :-\
Can somebody test this on a Vibrant? I am curious to see if there is a difference.
So i flashed these gps files to my captivate and i got a lock in like 10sec, first time i have ever gotten my gps to work, even after exchanging my first captivate, but its behaving the same way my friends first vibrant did, the pointer flys all over the place jumping around from place to place, never staying on my location parse...lets just hope samsung finds a definitive fix for the gps issues on many SGS variants.
Getting ready to flash and test now. thank you for grabbing those files.
info
can i flash this file on my stock captivate thats without root?...thanks.
I just flashed this to my Vibrant. I will test it on the way home but I got 11 sats in view in just about 2 secs in my office which usually sucks. We'll see. Maybe cross post this over to the Vibrant forum and get some folks to test it.

CLOSED TEST - (no longer Looking) for Beta Testers with ICS Experience - BETA CLOSED!

I am closing the beta for the time being, have a handful of testers atm. It may open up again, stay tuned.
You know the name of the game. Experienced ICS users only please.
I have been putting together a frankenstein type ICS build, blending some tweaks with:
-Beta 2.5.1 i9000
-Beta2 by goodoane
-ICS_4.0.1_r1-Beta2-i9000.zip by onecosmic
-Recommended using the FuguMod_Vibrant_Kernel_BETA2.zip from here: http://code.google.com/p/ice-cream-...mmary+Uploaded+ReleaseDate+Size+DownloadCount (the kernel is included in the zip)
-Also recommend the KB5 modem, from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19795419&postcount=130 (this is also included in the zip, but its not flashing with the rom as of right now)
This has some framework, build.pop, and ui tweaks applied, but I've pulled back on the theming to direct my attentions to functionality.
-Keymapping is corrected
-Can mount via MTP mode
-Moutning works in recovery
-ADB and Shell both work
-SU out of the box
-Lockscreen rotates and screen rotates 360 degrees
Not working:
Must toggle mute (on then off) in order to be heard by incoming callers
GPS
Video Recording
Video Playback (buggy)
You tell me what else to add here.
Installation: (coming from another ICS build, or CM7 only!!)
-Reboot to recovery, perform a factory reset
-Go to mounts and storage and format system
-Flash the Beta2 Kernel (FuguMod_Vibrant_Kernel_BETA2.zip)
-Flash the rom
-Flash your modem (no longer need to reflash the kernel)
-Fix permissions
-Reboot the phone
New Info
As you guys have read, I have been running the data data tweak from this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20017090&postcount=1756 and it seems to have made things a lot more stable. No odd application issues going on anymore, although there is a bit more lag, but I think I have found a temp fix for that.
Since Friday night I have been running AutoKill Memory Optimizer, free version from the market. Its not a task killer really, but it maintains the amount of free system memory on your device, from what I understand. I am using Aggressive settings, with the Advanced settings for Memory and Battery enabled, and my phone is flying!
If you guys want, give that a shot, and let me know your results.
*******************************
So, who wants to test?
First, you promise not to release this or share it with anyone, by signing up you agree to this one term.
You should have experience with ICS, and know how to flash it and recover from a bad flash.
If you've never flashed ICS before, you definitely want to start there.
I am looking to possibly release this to the wild by the end of the week, so active testers are a big plus!
When I feel like I have enough testerss I will post that on the top of this post, just ask in here, and I will pm you a link.
I'll test, running ICS now.. I know how to do a little above basic stuff.

can you fix the problem with (i guess all ICS) people not hearing me right?
sometimes they hear me ok, sometimes too loud, or not at all.
i''ve tried to hold and resume but it doesn't fix the issue every time.
this should be a top priority for any rom.
i returned to your zen froyo. it is nice and battery holds 4-5 days for me.
thank you.

What rom were you coming from? This should run with both bootloaders, but I'm on the stock bootloaders, so that might be it. Also, you should be coming from either CM7 or another ICS rom.

[GPS FIX] GPS Fix for all* roms (Captivate)

Any one try this with an Epic http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=22455870#post22455870
Interesting. I just looked at our phones gps.conf and there is like 3 servers.
---------- Post added at 07:08 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:59 PM ----------
At closer examination and comparison it has the same 3 servers we have, some extrra command codes and it looks like a supplemental server at the end of the script. But I already get 9 out of 11 locks so may not have a stock gps.conf on CM9.

We would have to get in line behind Apple...LOL.
Also I wonder if stock glitches like that. I know the locks are less but does it connect all the time? I have some friends with Epics non-rooted and never hear them complaining about the gps.
Ei22 would get 4 locks max and would lose signal if traveling for a length of time.
El30 for me was very glitchy. My locks would blink on and off like the chip was having a seizure. Maps would constantly "re-route"
Fb15 is back to being just like ei22. Was just outside on a clear night. Had 12 sats in view and would never go above 4 locks max. I assume its the same as ei22 with it losing lock after a period of driving.
With the "gps fix" I get lots of locks and they hold on, however like a part above, some days it just won't work without a reboot which is super annoying when your trying to drive.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Just tried this gps.conf update - still maxed out at 4 locks...gonna have to flash the fascinate file (ei22 gps fix) to fix mine.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Lastly, I can confirm the ei22 fix still works in fb15. After I flashed that I got 8 out of 9 locks immediately.
Edit: attached the GPS fix that works for me. It replaces the epic gpsd file with the one from the fascinate which is more aggressive and locks as many sats as possible. I believe CM7/9 is using this same file so you only need this on TW roms.

All you do is google twrp htc one and you come up with this.

It says MD5 check failed, that there is no MD5 file to check? Downloading again to see if that resolves it
---------- Post added at 11:32 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:24 PM ----------
which version of TWRP are you guys using? I'm using 2.6.3.2 and it says no MD5 file found. Any ideas? Is that the right version of TWRP?
The bulk of that time I was on lte in a low reception building. Only issue I have with that build is I get redraws. Screen freezes sometimes and the screen shortly from top to bottom will disappear. Will come back in like 30 seconds. I've sort of narrowed it down to keyboard, but not always.
i had issues with twrp, ended up using cwm instead and it installed fine for me. WiFi was a bit of a issue, I disabled the wifi optimization option then it connected fine, then re-enabled the wifi optimization.
downloaded gapps and comp is telling me its malicious?

So I cant install any 4.4 ROM. I've tried using CWM and TWRP (the latest versions) and nothing works. Any suggestions?

Figured it out!!

download the "ATT HTC One" CWM recovery. It is the newest one. I had been downloading the generic HTC One and I guess that one was an old one. Phone is finally booting up now, after many hours of frustration
me too...

AOSP Rom

Was able to get a ROM built and running based on LRX21V straight from source. Just trying to get a feel on how many people would want to run AOSP. There are some bugs present such as video recording causing the camera to stop working. I think there are binaries missing that Google didn't include in the binaries that are available. Same problem happened on the Nexus 5. Didn't test it much as I just purely wanted to see if it booted.
Also there is a lack of gapps available so I won't be rushing to get anything out. Let me know what y'all think and I'll try to tackle this to get some other options out for us.
Here is the test build for those that want to have a look. This is just a test build so bugs are to be expected. Video recording does not work. Haven't tested it completely as I need a fully working device this weekend. This is for those that have free time to just nit pick and find all bugs in this. Please report back after you are done and let me know what else you may have found that is broken or not working right.
Stock Google kernel (so if you flashed the kernel image to remove encryption your phone WILL be encrypted again)
Built off 5.0.0_r7 from AOSP
Flash ROM, flash gapps and flash SU that is linked below. This will allow root access on the stock kernel.
You can also optionally flash the custom boot image after flashing the ROM, gapps and SU by rebooting to bootloader and fastboot flash boot the custom encryption kernel. That is optional. Be sure to go back in to recovery after flashing the kernel to reflash the SU to make sure it was not overwritten.
Download Rom:AFH Mirror
Download Gapps for Lollipop:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=56810851#post56810851
Download latest SU: http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/supersu/2014-09-02-supersu-v2-05-t2868133
I'm tuned in!

The development section is kind of depressing me right now (no offense to devs) so bring it!

That is pretty offensive. It is a new device and isn't in the developers hand so releasing work without testing their work leads to quality problems.
I don't see you doing any development work and developers don't owe anyone anything as they do all this work as a hobby pretty much.

I know the reasons behind it, which was the point of the "no offense." I wasn't whining. I was trying to help motivate and encourage OP. He, as well as others, are working on making things happen and I'm excited for it and waiting eagerly for the kernel source to drop.
You took what I said the wrong way, so step off of your soap box, zephiK.
Edit: That reminds me. If any devs need testers, PM me. I'll be happy to help the community out.

Lol. I know this. Just came from the N5 I guess what I meant is that there isn't a complete package yet. There's a minimal yes that does work. But I prefer the full. Just lazy and hate downloading apps or pushing apps lol

No. Minor bug fixes for the particular device it was made for but that's it. I did notice on the N5 that there was a significant "miscellaneous" battery drain on r7. Might roll back to r3 if its present since r3 is the one for us (its also the same build for the N5).

Miscellaneous bug again? I wonder if they broke the same thing they already fixed, or if this is something else that is just falling into miscellaneous as well.
Thanks for the work on this!
In for the long haul! Tired of the plethora of gapps on this phone. Somehow I managed to break photos once by removing some google app... Weird.

As I wanted to attempt to pre-root and make some changes... Ugh.
Simply installing the SuperSU apk is enough for root, correct? I don't have to re-run CF... Especially since I'm not near a PC

Yes just use the one I linked to. Be sure to flash it in the same session so you don't lose the custom recovery.

Remember its just a test so I recommend waiting until you have access to a PC. Just in case lol
Well, I bit the bullet. Only lost a few downloads.... But anyway.
Sound quality seems.... Different? Also network says its connected to LTE, but its beyond slow. Not sure why exactly.
I'm on the correct APN.
Closing apps, I hear a slight buzz/tap three tomes when hitting the home button.

I have a 32gb and that's what I have.... I didn't check before.... Anyone have any idea what storage should be out of the box?
