Update or unlock! - Xoom General

What can we expect when we buy from moto ? A device that is no longer supported 3 months after release. A locked bootloader insuring that we will be left with a $350 paper weight when we buy our next tablet so we can run the next os that comes out. Its time for consumers to take a stand and say enough is enough . Support your devices or our next device will come from a company that does. Stop trying to make your customers pay for a new device every 3 months and support the devices that are already out .
UPGRADE OR UNLOCK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No longer supported after 3 months? They just released ICS for the Xoom and it's been unlocked since day one...and it's been out for nearly a year.

He is talking about the xoom fe. Which sucks, you can't even get to fast boot on this thing.

It's a Google Experience Device. Other than that one Moto product, the OP is right....
But Moto has "promised" (take that w/ a grain of salt as we know how well Moto keeps their promises) to release less products this year and therefore the products already released should gain more support time.

I don't understand why this thread was posted here.

release date?

anyone have any idea when the fascinate will be released?
I heard mid august, wish it was sooner cause I'm bummed about the droud x bein locked down
Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
Verizon will probably release it like one day after the 30 day mark of the Droid X, so people that are mad at how locked down it is can't swap it to the Fascinate. Wouldn't surprise me. Makes me hesitant to buy the Droid X, since I'm kind of wanting the Fascinate, but am anxious for a new phone.

Motorola is doing absolutely everything in their power to make the Droid X as restricted as possible, in terms of the Android hacking community getting root access to it. The current most accurate estimate until root access is achieved for the Droid X is "at least 4 months", according to Birdman. Cracking the bootloader (which is necessary to use any custom ROMs) may never be achieved. Motorola is really screwing the pooch here and making a lot of fans of the original Droid unhappy.
Samsung, on the other hand, has embraced the Android hacking community. The bootloader is completely open and accessible, and root was achieved very easily. The huge Galaxy S release around the world and with all the major cell providers in the U.S. might very well catapult Samsung to the top of the list for cell phone manufacturers, which is no easy feat; time will tell. One thing is for sure: there will be a TON of Galaxy S accessories available, and it will have a gigantic hacking community before long. I'm pretty impressed with their Galaxy S launch; not only is it huge and (I think) the biggest phone launch ever by anyone, but the fact that they've managed to keep the phone "wide open" to the hacking community really shows they're in it for the customer and not JUST money. (or rather, they're in it for the money via pleasing their customers)
OP, how about putting a question mark after the title of the thread to indicate your are asking a question here. Otherwise people are lead to believe you know the release the date.

lol my bad. it's fixed
att started dishin theirs out today ahead of schedule. non contract price is 350 for us. check with ur local v store to see if ur galaxy is also gettin put out early.
No mention of a release date anywhere...
ive emailed both samsung and vzw, neither will give me any info as to release date
vzw only said that there are new phones being tested to see how they work on thier network
hmmmmmmmm they could be purposely delaying it to give their new droid breathing room. sorry guys
I wouldn't doubt their holding off on releasing this. The Droidx and droid2 are supposed to be their money makers so why throw this phone in the middle and muck up the sales on the other two. They could also be trying to lock it down who knows. All I know is I want this phone
from unwiredview
Yesterday we showed you Verizon’s leaked summer catalog. And while it did feature some usual suspects, such as the Motorola Droid X, and even a yet-unannounced smartphone, the Motorola Droid 2, one device was strangely missing from it.
The formally announced Samsung Fascinate, Verizon’s very own Galaxy S, was nowhere to be found in the catalog, hinting to public availability post-summer season.
And now it looks like, indeed, this may be the last-to-launch of all the different Galaxy S variations to show up in the US
Verizon’s official comment on the Fascinate’s release date now states a “late summer or early fall” possibility. And judging from the construction of that phrase, fall availability seems the most plausible right now.
It's unfortunate, but it makes sense that Verizon would hold off in order to sell more Droids
read that att launched its galaxy s version on sunday
I don't get this at all. what the hell does vzw care which phone it sells as long as its selling them. Having such a large customer base they could really lead the way by putting out phone after phone while sprint & att try to keep up.
rumor has the droid 2 for august 23rd release, with android 2.2
so that pushes the fascinate out until sept if they keep staggering
Verizon really pisses me off with this, since they can't keep up with demand on the DroidX or the Incredible they should have a high end Android phone to offer their customers. I really don't understand the rumored 2Gb internal memory either, it's a high end device and all the other Galaxy's have 16Gb if I remember correctly. I played with the AT&T version and it is a great phone, same overall size as my Droid but alot thinner...just feels good in your hand.
read somewhere that motorola and Verizon committed over $100,000,000 (one hundred million) dollars in advertising for the droid. motorola needs the droid's to do well or they'll have to leave this industry shortly. This is the last hope for them. They dropped the ball with the evolution of phones to smartphones. And the Droids are their last gasp. So just like ATT won't advertise the captivate on T.V. or thier website. Don't expect Verizon to advertise it either.
Samsung Fascinate is so much more appealing to me than any of the droid series right now.
Maybe Verizon should ditch motorola and make a deal with samsung

[Q] Will this be obsolete in 6 months to a year?

I've been hearing rumors that tablets in 6 months to a year will make this tablet obsolete. Apparently tablets will be coming out soon with almost twice the processing speed as this currently has, is that true? I have to make a decision on a tablet to buy that will last me at least 2 years before I can buy another one, do you all think that this will last that long? Should I wait another 6 months and buy a better tablet when they start rolling out? I know the developers will keep this going, but like with my HTC Hero, as soon as the next big thing came out, everybody left that device in the dust.
It's a common joke in the tech world to say that by the time you buy your device it's obsolete.
Sadly, it's true. Qualcomm already announced some beastly processors at CES this year, but said they won't show up in devices until 2012. So that's already going to make your device obsolete within a year or so.
I'd say find a device you like now, and buy it. After you buy it be sure to look the other way as other devices get announced.
Also, don't buy into Best Buy's Buyback program, it's a ripoff. You have to sell back within 6 months, and can only get at most 50% of your purchase price back.

Are you ****ting on me? No really I think it smells funny in here. Of course it will be
Computers and similar products like tablets and smartphones follow the same rule. The motorola Xooms performance will be outshadowed in a year, just like the Evo's performance is already outshadowed by the latest phones coming out.
To expect a technology product of this type to be relevant a year later is not gonna happen lol.

The quadcores will be coming out (and the IPAD 3 is rumored to come out) at the beginning of next year.
The end of this year, that quadcores will be SAMPLING - meaning prototype devices will be shown, with release schedules in the beginning of the next year around this time.
With any sort of device, you are looking at a 6 month doubling time in technology. Recently that has been speeding up.
To be fair, the google nexus one (also a flagship) still gets regular updates first - the Moto xoom should be similar.
After one year, quadcores will come out - but your tegra 2 will still be usable.
its obsolete already....save ur money...don't buy anything...
Depending on what you mean by obsolete.
As with Android phones, there are severe competition within the Android platform. All big manufacturers refresh their flagship models every few months to take advantage of newer faster better components. If you want to always have to top of the line, the highest-spec Honeycomb tablet, the Xoom may not last for long. It's already been said that the Samsung one may have a better screen and the LG one does 3D... and how knows how many more Honeycomb tablets will be announced at CTIA by the end of this month.
But if you are considering getting a high-end tablet to won't be obsolete in the sense of not getting updates, or the hardware can't keep up with the softwares. You don't really have to worry, for at least a year or more. Your experience with it will only get better as Honeycomb platform gets more mature, for the next year at least.
This is always the case with Android. The faster, nicer looking, longer lasting device with the latest firmware and the newer manufacturer technology is always right around the corner.
Ultimately this is why I chose not to subsidize with a 24 month ($480 dollar + tax) contract.

I would like to introduce you to Moore's Law.
Moore's law describes a long-term trend in the history of computing hardware. The quantity of transistors that can be placed inexpensively on an integrated circuit has doubled approximately every two years. The trend has continued for more than half a century and is not expected to stop until 2015 or 2020 or later.

What he said.
Obsolete is such a funny word. People interchange it with top of the line. There will be some games that come out in a year that won't look as good on the Xoom. They'll probably be/are tablets that are better able to decode video. But the Xoom won't tell stories of processing 4 times harder in the snow for a while.
Disregard.
Well, it wont be complete obsolete but NVIDIA already announced that their new quad core processors will be out on tablets by August of 2011. So, thats twice the performance the xoom has now. I'm expecting a Xoom 2 of some kind. I would wait honestly. thats what imma do.

Contract is for a data plan. You can always buy another off contract (full price) and switch them out.
This is something thats frustrating me aswell. £500 is alot of money these days, especially with cost of living increasing, the price of rice etc.
So you kinda want to get a good few years use out of it. And not have to worry about upgrading within 12 months.
And likewise expect adequate support and updates as quickly as possible without feeling abandoned.

It won't be obsolete but it won't be top of the line anymore. Really, you should buy what makes you happy now, skip the next generation of tablets, and then refresh with whatever 3rd gen comes out in a year or so.
You'd be broke if you tried to keep up with the latest technology. Unless you have that much disposable income...

Yeah but if you have that attitude you'll be waiting forever. When the iPad came out I wanted to wait because although it's a great product, I don't like Apple's ethos. When the cheap aPad type tablets came out I wanted to wait because they're a bit dodgy build wise. When the Galaxy Tab came out I wanted to wait because I'm not a fan of the 7 inch form factor. Now the Xoom is out and I'm supposed to wait again, for another what 5/6 months because there MAY be a quad core tab out before the end of the year? No. The Xoom has everything I was waiting for, a proper tablet OS, open ethos (I was dreading an unlockable bootloader), good build quality and 10 inch form factor. It's what I've been waiting for. I'll be damned if I'm going to wait again just for a performance boost that I'm not even sure it needs right now.
Anyway, when the quad cores are out there will be another reason to wait. I can imagine it now. "Oh you're going to buy that quad tab are you? Why don't you wait until Icecream is out next Jan, then you'll be able to have glasses free 3D." Or some such other benefit for waiting. Nah, I'm done waiting, I'm jumping on the tablet train now.

Completely agree with you. There is finally a quality tablet out there and thats why I picked it up. I'm sure this is plenty fast enough, and you'll always be waiting for something better.
Just pick a comfortable one and stop evaluating new ones, but treat them as candidate for 2 years later.
That's why having a 2-year contract helps sometimes. It help to set the mentality right.
Sometimes it sounds like, to be married or to be single and availe for better girlfriend/boyfriend ,
which one is better?
Just in this case, the contract is just 2-year. The inappropriate analogy is life-time (or at least hopefully for many's cases)
I think the reason the xoom will not become obsolete as quickly as other tablets do is due to the software, not the hardware. I owned an htc hero and saw the nexus 1 get multitudes of update and my poor hero get only 2. The xoom is much like the nexus 1. Even though the hardware will not be the latest and the greatest, your software will always be up to date. Something you may not see with the LG device (due to 3D) or the Samsung device (due to Samsung being Samsung).
Just something to consider.

Upgrading Dilemma (Premier Gold)

Looking for a way to maximize my final premier upgrade benefit.
My eligibility just kicked in effective today.
Currently using an evo 4g. Don't really have any issues with it, but the upgrade is there, tempting me. If I upgrade now, it'll be another 22 months before i'm eligible. If I wait til summer, something newer and faster will be out.
Suggestions?
You'll be eligible to upgrade in 20 months... and like everyone will tell you: yes there will always something new as soon as you buy something now that will be better... if you need a new device or need to scratch that itch of upgrading then go for it... you wont be able to upgrade again for at least 8 more months (12 mo from gold status -20 regular upgrade) if you miss your current chance
My understanding of the changes was that premier gold could upgrade anytime in 2012 if they're eligible now?

There is no premier gold or silver anymore
No reason to quote if replying to a post directly above.
I know there's no more premier. However, my understanding from reading http://premier.sprint.com/premierupdate/faq.php#goldupgrade suggests that gold members have through the end of 2012 to exercise their upgrade.
Why not just call Sprint to verify? And if you can wait...LTE is around the corner...sort of.
Well the only phone really worth upgrading to right now is the Epic Touch 4G in my opinion.
It's a pretty slick phone, but I was disappointed it was released so late. The SGS2 European counterpart had been available for over half a year before it even came out.
If you check the development forums, the phone has a lot of good support and roms, but no true AOSP roms yet.
Unfortunately, the next Sprint flagship phone likely won't be out until next June or July, if history repeats itself, which it has over the last 3 years.
I've also been sitting on an upgrade since June, been tempted by the EVO 3D and Epic Touch before, but I've managed to hold off.
I just hope they at least announce something tangible about the next Sprint flagship device within a few months.
Getting ICS on our phones will make the wait a bit easier to take, I think.
^^Agreed. The ET4G does look like a nice phone, but wouldn't mind something with a higher resolution too. Lack of AOSP is a big issue on that phone too. After running cm7 for the last 6+ months, I doubt I can go back to anything else.
If I wait til the july launch of whatever is next, at that point I'd be 5 months away from the 20 month upgrade period anyways. Seems either way, the annual upgrade this time around will likely go to waste.

I am 100% in the exact same position. Got my Evo on release day and have been sitting on an upgrade since June. The Evo 3D was not the exponential leap I was hoping for and the initial locked bootloader made me hesitate. I thought I was destined to get the Galaxy Epic but LOS scared me off then Samsung's usual slow response to the problem sealed that "no go" for me. I'm sure they are both great phones but if I'm going to be stuck for two years, I want that big leap in technology like the OG Evo was. Now Sprint is updating to LTE and they are going to be releasing a bunch of LTE ready phones by the 2nd or 3rd quarter 2012. I don't see any "gotta have it now" phones currently and with this incredible dev. community, I can see and test all the latest software anyway.
Frankly I hope the next HTC superphone on Sprint will LTE ready, thin, have a quality build (take some design queues from the Evo Design), be ICS bug free, have a great screen, be as future proof as possible (yeah I know) with a quad-core processor and most importantly, beat whatever specs. the Iphone 5 ends up with. Well that's my wish list; what's yours?

Galaxy Note S

i was just reading articles (on korean news web site) and it was saying that
samsung will not introduce galaxy s3 in MWC but they might display Galaxy note S instead.
The article also stated that the Galaxy Note S will have ICS, better camera and quadcore CPU..
Now, I don't know if this source is regit and trustful.. but i am definitely interested in, and probably even consider, changing my note to the quadcore ICS Samsung galaxy note for sure
imo i dont think samsung will introduce another note before s3 also i dont think samsung is willing to put an alternative to its own product while it is sales are good.
That would be suicide in my personal opinion. They JUST released this device 3 months ago, and they're going to announce the next one? Do you know how many people would be pissed off, myself included. Especially after paying top dollar (in my case Euro) for a device that they would supposedly be phasing out for its new big brother Note S?
I count this as pure speculation, and it won't happen. I stand corrected if it does, and I would have also lost complete faith in Samsung if they do! That's just bad marketing!!!

+1, you are 100% correct. The Galaxy Note only just came out, only had mine a few months so it's very unlikely they will release another one.
In fact the Note hasn't even been released in the US yet! How can they bring out a newer version when the original is still to be released in America?
I'd say 2013 at the earliest for a Note replacement, not anytime soon...
It's most likely a fake rumour or the Galaxy S III...
Rumors make the world go round.
I don´t think that after the huge success of the S2 and the Note, are the Samsung Mobile managers in any hurry of releasing a next device. From the Note there are already over 1,5 Million devices sold and the phone is not even out in the US.
At the moment the market will stay stable for a while there is really no real competitor to Samsung. HTC is no where near at the moment with their products and LG just failed in my opinion giving the customers the support they deserve.
The strategy is pretty simple. The web will be filled with rumors and speculations for the S3 / possible Note2 just to build up momentum and discussions about it.
Samsung has placed its self as an Apple alternative nr1 at the moment. They will only release an S3 or a Note2 when Apple decides to release the Idumb5.
So expect both devices (Idumb5 and S3) at about the same time (estimate mid summer).
Customer support is the key to success. Give the customer the feeling he is valuable to the company and you will try to keep him satisfied. Especially if he has payed some 600€ for a fricking phone.
i totally agree with you, the new note s won't be in market anytime soon, but i was thinking that samsung might introduce note s in MWC and produce it in the 4th quarter? then again, i have no idea if the writer has regit sources.. but hey, quadcore note.. im totally buying it lol
From what I heard, the Samsung Galaxy Note S was the smaller version of the current Note. Although that's very doubtful because that sort of is the Galaxy S II.
Releasing this phone any time soon would simply mean less money for Samsung, as the Note is still being sold alot, and needs to be sold more in the US too.
I sure hope the Samsung Note S is just a rumour if it, indeed, is the bigger, quad core version of our Note. That'd devastate all the current Note users..
quit whining
Guys,
I am really surprised at the attitude here, why would anyone not want them to release a newer updated version of the Note, a product that is already good but like anything can be made even better.
Technology marches on, the note was announced early summer 2011 yes some of you have only just got them but there will still be people buying galaxy s2 even after the s3 is released or announced.
do you really want to stop progress, it would be like saying our parents saying i dont want anyone to invent CD's because I have just bought a nice tape deck.....
Grow up, quit whining and stop trying to fight the future.
I'll flog my note to some technological dullard and buy a quad core, super amoled plus hd ( non pentile ) rear plate cmos camera equipped G Note S the moment it comes out.
Now a real question is does anyone know if the S-pen will retain pressure sensitivity using the ICS native api or only running wacom drivers......
MG
I am not against the future or development of technology.
I just hope that Note S don't come out TOO SOON. Got it? NOT TOO SOON!
'Cause I don't want my beloved Note is soon defaced by a stupid-same-size-and-design thing!!!
I wrote about this few weeks back,GNote with its 5.3" screen has created a completely new class, and looks like its becoming a hit fast,so Samsung just cant sit back and watch some another company come up with same form factor but with better specs, they have to keep themselves in the lead by beeing few steps ahead of the compitition.
Hence my prediction that we will have a new GNote sometime in the 4th quarter, and ,of course, i will be there to get one ,which also means cutting back my beer consumption, since this thing doesnt come cheap!!.
MAX check your sources.
GSM Arena database:
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_note-4135.php
The Note was first announced in September 2011 and released in October 2011 (black version). Most phones were delivered in November / December first time and the white devices were first in December there.
We are at the start of February the phone is at the hands of most owners for a maximum of two or three months.
I am one of the owners who frequently changes phone, mostly because its a hobby but I really like the note and I would like to stick to it longer than 3 months before I loose a huge amount of money just because a newer version is out.
I can see a successor to the note only in at aprox year from now as a bigger S3.
These could be a Galaxy Note S or Plus or whatever but I don't think it will be a replacement for Galaxy S2 but just another addition in Samsung product portfolio.
As I wouldn't be happy to get 5 something inch screen because it's too big for me if we speak about phone
http://samsunggalaxys3review.net/long-rumored-white-samsung-galaxy-nexus-officially-announced/
there was an official announcement sometime back on sammobiles, or I should say maybe that was an unofficial news, but the Note S will be unveiled later this year in q4, They just started selling in usa and canada from feb, and invested millions in the super bowl ad, its impossible for note release.
plus its just announced that samsung isnt showing anything at mwc. cheers !

Hah! Funny people. Do your really think that Samsung is that stupid? They've invested A LOT of money into the Note, and it sells pretty well, and you think that Samsung will unveil a new model when the US version just got released, and they advertised at the freaking Super Bowl!?
"Yes, let's advertise this product and release a completely new model in a month and burn some serious money".
If they did that people would stop buying the Note and wait for the "Note S", and Samsung would have massive losses. Do you think it's cheap to build and design a phone? No. It costs millions upon millions of dollars.
The natural thing would be to unveil the next gen Note in september again; 12 month after the previous unveiling, like they're doing with the Galaxy S products.
And i'll end this post with a quote:
"When pushed, Ryan Bidan, director of product marketing at Samsung, said that while he wasn’t sure what the model count for his company would be in 2012, he agreed that phone makers should drive down the number of phones. “Sheer SKU proliferation is a problem,” he said."
Maybe it could be the rumored Samsung Galaxy Journal rumored to be coming on Verizon and Sprint (USA). Same 5.3" display and all that but CDMA w/LTE support.
Yup, that might be the case.
why fight the future

The Note was first announced in September 2011 and released in October 2011 (black version). Most phones were delivered in November / December first time and the white devices were first in December there.
I can see a successor to the note only in at aprox year from now as a bigger S3.

Firemaker please keep up.
There was plenty of articles and discussions about samsung note back in august last year and the note or smart-tab-phone ( translation) was allready shown at a number of trade shows in korea througout the summer ( Anyone could read about it ahead of the official release even in mass market blogs like engaget )
Its now february half a year later and I dont understand the alarm and negative comments this is causing.
1) most buyers of these devices dont even read these geek only sites and just buy what they see in the stores... they dont care what *might* be available on worldwide import or other geos
2) very few of the notes users pay 600 anythings £$€ as they just buy phones on contract so its no real loss for them if there is an update
3) Surely any reasonable individual would be pleased if sammy annouce an updated note taking advantage of refreshed technology, we are not talking revolution here, purely an evolution to the current state of the market for a premium device. ( how could any non luddite aurgue this isnt a good thing ?)
4) people are whining they are loosing money ....WTF you bought something its great, so chill out be pleased, something better will come out soon, who cares you havnt lost anything ...if you buy a dell pc and intel release a faster processor six months later will you get upset if dell include it in that model......
we should celibrate these refreshes and be pleased for constant innovation otherwise we would all be still walking around with wap speed data on our tft ipaqs and sony clies instead of hspa oled hd notes.....
maybe they announce TW5 and ICS
May be they will announce a Galaxy Note S with SuperAMOLED Plus?
All the 'S' phones have SuperAMOLED Plus display. YoU never know,

Nexus 6 Verizon Release date rumors

I just listened to Android Police podcast and they stated a rumor of the Nexus 6 coming to Verizon next year.
I know is just a rumor but I sure hope its not true and do not see how Verizon would be willing to lose all those potential sales.
What is your thoughts on this. I am willing to wait another month for the Nexus 6 but I cannot wait until next year.
Cheers!
No way
Ouch
If next year means January 2015, I'll wait. No problem there.
Verizon was the only carrier to not have an announcement or landing page of some sort. It's possible.
they need the extra time to make sure it is locked down for good.
Ugh... Hoping for some words of encouragement... Lol. Well at least I can hope that they'll let us know when pre order goes up on the 29th.
If they do not release until January then it might be worth it for me to jump ship from red to blue. ?
Typical VZW. They held up their Galaxy Nexus for a few months too. Hopefully this doesn't effect updates now that its one device for all networks.
VZ is listed on the N6 google page, it has the bands, VZ is just being VZ.
Since the phone is one model for USA and one for worldwide, the general consensus right now is it will be unlocked, even on VZ, may have been a terms of agreement to get it.
But we'll have to see.
as to one month versus next year, I could wait, my GNex is running fine on KK, if I can wait three years to get to this point, another 6 months is not a far stretch.
Maybe buy on Google Play... Than use on Verizon with a little hacking? H'm

I'm pretty sure they clarified it was a joke in reference to Verizon's handling of the Galaxy Nexus somewhere on the website, I think I saw it in one of the comment sections.
That's some good news. I know we'll all have to wait to see.... But this information helps me feel ok about waiting.
Honestly my biggest worries was that they had a source or a potential source with information that we did not have
Look at it this way.... The longer you wait the closer we get to an announcement of a device running a 64bit 810 Qualcomm kit. If VZW does delay things long enough to see that come around I'll wait.
After the last Verizon/Nexus disaster, I'm really surprised is coming to big red.

Same here, I seriously can't wait for the nexus 6, and if everyone is concerned buying it directly from Google play would solve the issued with it being unlocked. Just my 2 cents
From my CM11 S3
I thought it was one phone for US that had all bands to work on any carrier.

From my CM11 S3
Called Verizon today just for kicks to see if I got a rep that had any idea of the nexus 6 at least..
They literally had no idea what I was talking about......
They came back to me after putting me on hold in complete excitement after being introduced to the device lmaooooo. I got a really good kick out of that this morning.
