Desire Z Official ICS update? - G2 and Desire Z General

Will the htc desire z get an ics update? The desire hd is gonna get it, so on guessing that the desire z will get one as well?

It was once on HTC update list, but disappeared...
and I don't think it will back on list... they got enough work on new devices...

If you want ICS there is a rom (i assume you are rooted) out there called Virtuous Quattro. Its a full AOSP build of ICS ported to the G2/Desire Z
Here is the developers website:
http://www.virtuousrom.com/p/quattro.html
I definitely recommend it. Its kinda new, but vary stable. Especially when using the Nova Launcher.
Hope this helps

Sent them one re: DZ and Flyer.

Hopefully if we don't get an official one, someone will port the Runnymead ICS. I've tried Quattro but to be honest, I quite like sense...
The post on the front page of XDA states Desire Z is on the "expected but not officially announced"

There's also the Andromadus dev team, building what might be the start of CM9 for the Desire Z/G2.
I'm running their Alpha 11 and it's been stable and well-behaved so far.

Its capable of running it that's for sure. But I highly doubt it will be pushed to our devices. It would be nice as it would near complete the custom roms problems they are having. Since HTC doesn't want to give up things like the camera to help move it along.

Sense+ICS may be too much for the ram in our phones, but there is no reason why the G2 shouldn't get an update, 512mb of ram is plenty for stock ICS

Sure there is, the G2 has been end of lifed and has already received a major OS update. Not to mention the G2 isn't totally stock (if you tear the OS apart and look).
We will get our ICS, just in the form of CM9.

i don't think we wil get an official ics update from htc, and onestly, i don't want it, the last official update really suck compared to the unofficial roms in the dev section...
the question is...when we get official and fully working cm9 rom?

90% of us don't want the update for a modded rom lol! We just want it to rip out the drivers so that stuff like CM9 will actually work properly. It looks like one our cousin phones (Desire HD & S) will be getting the update so we should be okay eventually as far as proper drivers go.

Yeah just read this on Phandroid, totally unexpected but a very welcome one!
Another things is that the Sensation XL will be released "soon after" the Sensation. So we will probably be getting custom ROM's based off Runnymede before the official one is released!

Good news, everyone!
finally its happening!!!
but i think that as always the cooked ROMS will be batter than the source
Why is everyone suprised!!
HTC is supporting devices up to 18 months of release, the DHD was sold on OCT 2010, furthermore we have enough evidence now of continuous support to their devices
the classic Desire: Eclair > Froyo > Gingerbread || it stops here because of the slow S1 and bottle-necked internal Memory
the DHD: Froyo > Gingerbread 2.3.3 sense 2.1 > Gingerbread 2.3.5 Sense 3.0 > upcoming ICS
Three major android updates! the only surprising part in this is actually our latest Sense 3.0 update which was unexpected, if you look at the Sensation and EVO3D both devices are still officially on the old slow QHD Sense 3.0, the Sensation has many leaked test firmwares including GB sense 3.5 and the beautiful ICS sense 3.6 but officially users are still waiting
and actually EVO3D owners received this as bad news, since they are slated to receive the ICS update in the same time frame as DHD owners given that the EVO3D is highend almost a twin the Sensation sans 3D, it's not really fair to make them wait
The EVO3D situation can be explained, i think it didn't sell so well, while the DHD is their biggest selling Android device so far, still being produced and sold, i doubt they will upset all it's users
as for Desire S owners saying DHD owners are lucky?! why the DHD/DesireS/IncredibleS are twins and we have been receiving the same updates, like the recent Sense 3.0 update
I've seen posts for the last few months with people nagging and saying its impossible ICS will come to DHD, XDA should make a sticky saying, yes people believe it already HTC currently offers the best Android updates/support
If Samsung made such announcement then i would be surprised!
I'm hoping the RCMIX3D team comeback and cook an ICS rom for the DHD.
Greg.

That's why I really in love with my DHD and sold my Nexus S even after it received official ICS update and several good quality custom ROM based on official ICS (but I don't care, after all vanilla Android is really boring anyways even for ICS, HTC Sense is so much better, trust me ).
I guess that this would be the last major update (ICS 4.0) release by HTC. If HTC decides to release a new firmware beyond ICS, it would be a pleasant surprise for us and that time we will say it's time for DHD to go and welcome a new generation of DHD. ;-)

you honestly can not expect more support from HTC after a stable ICS, 4 major software update including 3 major android updates! no other manufacturer matches this!
The new generation of DHD is here, it will be announced on the 25th!
Their commitment in releasing ICS has definetely locked me into getting HTC all the way.
I mean , Motorola phones definetely has superior build, but their after market support sucks so much you can't even get BEYOND 1 major update for a phone. Don't even talk about Samsung....

Why Desire Z should get ICS

HTC didn't announce ICS update, despite its brothers getting it.
We assumed it was hardware limitations with the smaller RAM (512mb)
But now HTC have announced the new HTC One V with ICS and Sense 3.6/4.0.
And guess what? It only has 512mb aswell.
So RAM can't be the issue. Maybe CPU power?
Go pester HTC on Twitter/Facebook now for your update!

The issue is that HTC has A LOT of phones. The Desire Z has already received a major Android update. It is not a flagship phone, nor a big seller.

And that phine hasn't just had one, or two or three major updates....

It's gone from 2.2 all the way to 4.0 with numerous huge sense upgrades.

I think Nospin is right; commitment to the development of Android varies among different manufacturers. Commitment to profit does not. There is limited upside to them providing an upgrade. Chances are, we'll still purchase the next HTC phone when we get the money and/or discounted price with contract from our carriers, despite them choosing not to upgrade our phones. In other words, why provide us with an additional free service, when they're going to get our money in the future anyway. In fact, providing the upgrade might *deter* us from buying their latest and greatest.

That's cause the Desire HD IS a flagship device.
But I hope so, we will get custom ICS from HTC ONE V. I think it will be brilliant
I don't think the desire z will get a OTA update either. I think they plan it this way so that we have to upgrade and won't be content on sticking it out with our old devices. Either way the desire z will get ICS from cm9 most likely. It's taken longer then I wanted but I know it's in the works.
Just use Andromadus. I know it's not official, but you can rock it now. Which counts for a lot.

If this was Samsung, then I would agree with the Desire Z getting ICS. However HTC has already given us an unlocked bootloader as well as the source code for the Desire Z. There's no need for HTC to get involved anymore. This is exactly why places like XDA are important to the rest of us who "knows" our devices are still kicking strong because then we can just do the work ourselves. And besides, even if Desire Z does get an ICS update: the majority of us will still prefer Custom ROMs anyways. This way, everybody wins. HTC maintains a healthy reputation with us and we get to save some money.
heh, by "we", I mean the talented devs that still support our devices. I'm personally useless.

I agree, I think there would be two benefits of having ICS come officially to Desire Z / G2. First would be that that ROM would be a lot easier to modify and tinker with by the dev's then what they are working with currently. The second benefit would be in the form of less people asking for eta's on cm9. I would rather use a custom version of a rom than a stock rom, but the same doesn't go for everybody. I bet a lot of the traffic on xda is people just wanting ICS on their device period.

HTC Official ICS Update List, No Desire Z

http://blog.htc.com/2012/03/ics/
I woke up in the morning with this news. I have to say that I was very disappointed. Even though I anticipated that HTC won't release an official ICS update for the Desire Z, this news still took a toll on me :-(
now all we can hope for is a better port from the devs (there're already good ICS ROMs for the Desire Z, the Icecream JIBwich ROM I am using is already much better than stock GB, but I do want to have a better camera driver)
well, for anyone who still hopes, at the very least, HTC haven't said that they won't upgrade the Desire Z, and there's still this petition

CM9 FlowChart

For all Vision/G2 users that are unsure or doubting that we'll get ICS on our devices this should EASE YOUR MIND!
source for those wondering: https://plus.google.com/117962666888533781522/posts/XzbMYgotkmy
also, xda is a pretty demanding crowd; i don't know if 50% certainty will ease their minds
http://www.cyanogenmod.com/blog/progress-on-cm9
According to that post, the MSM7x30 chip is in their scope of support, so it's more likely than just 50%.
It's 75% according to comments. Even if there is no official support, there are always resourceful developers. I've been using CM7 on my Defy for a long time before official support came.
By the way, that flowchart was a semi-joke. It's not meant to be totally definitive, but it does give an idea as to CM9 main requirements - i.e. 512MB RAM and an ICS official release on a device with the same chipset.
Sent from my Desire Z running CM7.
It probably helps that we already have some fairly successful ICS builds on our devices. I've been running Andromadus v13 for a little while and it works really well. There are just a few things that need to be worked on (like the camera and gps lock). But for normal tasks, it runs really smoothly.

Does this mean the Razr has a 75% chance of getting CM9. Am I understanding this right?

Why does not DesireHD have official CM9?

Desire HD, Galaxy S, Xperia Arc is almost the same specs.

However, Desire HD does not have even the nightly version.

The key is they almost have the same specs. There will not be an official CM release for DHD untill things are working. Right now the biggest hurdle is the camera, but there are other smaller issues and tweaks to be made before they will release an official version. I am running an unnofficial CM10 build by Randomblame that I like quite a bit atm. Things feel like the are progressing pretty quickly, so I have hope we'll see a strong/stable JB build in the coming weeks.

Yes it is because the whole galaxy series is so close that they can make things work unlike HTC

Desire HD is not complete even CM7

Sony is working with FreeXperia team, Samsung has a relationship with Cynagenmod team.
I think HTC is reluctant about the CUSTOM.
The sales of HTC fall as expected
Where is CM9 for HTC Desire HD (was running Icecoldsandwich)
If HTC are not going to continue to support this phone ... they should at least release the source code to the CM & Kang teams who continue to develop for this device.
Come on HTC lift your game!
How is it that Opensource development teams in there spare time can achieve more that the dev's who created the device????
Its they can't but xda is your best bet

Yes it is. Look at the stable releases. You have CM 7.2.0 which was released June 15th,
It's a shame though. I never like Vanilla Android (and CM) until ICS. HTC Sense is the reason why I always stuck to HTC phones. However, with the UI advancements in ICS and JB, I would happily drop HTC Sense. Looks like that will never come to fruition on the Desire HD though, as there won't be an official CM9 or CM10 unless we get the source code from HTC first.
HTC really are killing themselves. Once industry leaders, they are now lagging far far behind. Sort of like a 100m runner competing in a marathon (sorry, I've been watching way too much of the Olympic Games)!

Specs mean nothing. It is all hardware, driver, kernel related. You have to remember that drivers for a lot of hard ware is not open source so they have to be built from the ground up. Without kernel source it is a lot more difficult.

However, Xperia Arc has been updated to Android4.0, But Galaxy S hasn't been updated to Android4.0.
Why does Galaxy S have the official version of CM10? And GalaxyS is officially supported by AOKP, But DesireHD is not supported by it.

Because the nexus is a galaxy phone. All the galaxy phones are alot closer then HTC phones. You can take most of the stuff from the nexus and it will work on the galaxy s with only minor changes to the kernel and coding.
Also you have to remember that HTC big thing is Sense. They want every HTC running it so they are not huge supporters of AOSP.

I can't see why you don't understand. The Galaxy S is pretty much identical to the Nexus S. They have the same CPU and GPU. So the CM team pretty much had the drivers for the Galaxy S when the Nexus S source code was released.
Thank you for your reply.
I see.
CM9 for DHD

now that desire HD has got a fully working unofficial rom ported from incredible s, where the camera works great which was the actual reason that was stopping the CM team from building a CM9 for DHD.. cant they build one now ? :fingers-crossed:
If I am correct, you can't use a Sense kernel on a ASOP kernel. Although having the Sense kernel will help, you can't plop in a Sense kernel on a ASOP rom. If those CM10 betas get any better, then CM may start official nightlies. The main problem is all internal, how the phone manages RAM and especially using the SD Card is relatively unstable compared to a Sense Rom (most people consider it very stable but CM wants everything to be somewhat perfect and truthfully it kinda is unstable).

Correct. And about the galaxy s and xperia arc, they have team hacksung and freexperia project working on every Samsung and Sony device. We HTC users have devs committed to a certain section, usually their device
Our maintainers, attn1 and kali- have both moved on. Maybe that's the problem lol

I think Desire HD is getting too old. Using it 2 years now, however i'll keep on doing as long as it works
