So I received my Kindle Fire for Christmas, and I'm in the UK. My uncle from the US brought it over for me, and I hope this post will clear up any speculation about what will and will not work on your Kindle Fire in the UK.
1. Apps: Apps need a US credit card, or you cannot download from the Kindle Store. This was not really an issue for me, as I rooted my Fire, installed the Market, and can download from there, not to mention sideloading APK file apps, which I was able to do without rooting
2. Silk: Works fine, uses EC2 cloud like it should
3, Book Store: Haven't tried it, but I was able to download books I had purchased previously for my old Kindle
4: Prime: You get a month's free of Amazon Prime, I wasn't able to stream videos from it, and I don't really care, I don't want to pay 70 dollars + a year for it.
Everything else works fine, and I really love it. The only other issue, was during the set up, there is no option to select the UK time zone, so you have to change it manually from the settings later. Oh, and all the temperatures in the weather app are in Fahrenheit. But it works like a charm. Got lots of working apps, Minecraft, Fruit Ninja, Angry Birds, and I'm using Calibre library to convert my PDFs into .MOBI format for reading on the Fire.
So all in all, it works pretty well in the UK actually! Hope this clears everything up for people in the UK thinking of getting it somehow. If I've missed anything please tell me!
Would also like to use the Kindle Fire in the UK but without rooting.
You mentioned being able to sideload apps ... but in order to do so, don't you need to download a file manager from the Amazon store (which a UK person cannot do)? and / or use an Android phone to backup an app?
I tried to download free apps from Amazon but even that is not possible and I don't have an Android phone .... is there any other way to sideload??
regards ....

Before rooting I was able to sideload by downloading directly using the Fire, then using the browser, going into the menu, and seeing my downloaded, from that file list you can launch APKs.
I'm using it in the Czech Republic and I can confirm that all the things mentioned by "georgeos" are valid.
If anyone is interested, here are some of my own findings:
- Books - you can purchase books from Amazon as long as you have a valid card number. You're eligible to borrow some of the books in the store with Prime subscription (limited to one book a month).
- Newsstand - same as above - you can check most of the magazines with a 14 day free trial subscription.
As far as the sideloading goes, it's pretty simple even without access to the App Store.
First you need to turn on installation of applications from unknown sources. Then use the browser to look for an .apk file of your preffered file manager (I used ES File Explorer since it was free and came highly recommended). Once the download is completed tap the status bar to show the recent notifications, then tap the downloaded .apk file to start the installation.

Ah yeah, sorry, forgot to mention that. But it is best to root the device, and install the Android Market, makes getting apps easier if you don't want to pirate the APKs, or if you're looking for the latest version of a free one, and it's always difficult to find a latest version APK. Also the Market shows ONLY the apps compatible with the device, so you don't have to go through the pain of downloading the APK and then it not working and having to uninstall it and delete it.
Hi - I've been searching around for about half an hour or so but can't find an "idiot's guide" (for that is what I need) on how to make my US Kindle Fire compatible with the UK app store.
I've asked Amazon directly a number of times but they refuse to help. I'm close to selling up and buying a UK one, so would really appreciate if anyone knew if there was a way to do this.
Many thanks in advance.
Purchase kindle fire games with gift card from Asia
please some one help me. yesterday i have purchased a amazon gift card of 10$ and added to my amazon account but when i try to purchase any kindle fire game it says that its only valid for US residents. what should i do any proxy server, vpn connection or could anyone purchase for me if i give you my login id.
Any HELP Please.
I am trying to find out how to install some of my text books from amazon to my Nexus 7 but am having problems. The books I am trying to get aren't supported by amazon because they only allow Kindle, Ipad, pc, or mac downloads for the book. I am wondering if maybe I just download for PC and move it to my tab it will show somehow. I am pretty noobish when it come to messing around with these devices. My tab isn't rooted yet but if its necessary to root to get these books I will. I am just hesitant to try to experiment because the cheapest of my books is 110 bucks.
I have moved about 600 books from from my Kindle library to my Nexus. If you have the mobi files on your desktop, download the Kindle app on your Nexus, make a folder called Kindle in the root directory of your phones storage, and drag the mobi files to that folder. Reboot the tablet, and they show up. Each of my Kindle books had 3 files per folder, the cover art, OPF file and the mobi file, I moved them all. Works like a charm.

Alright. The only thing I dont understand is when you say to put it in the root directory of the phones storage. Are you saying the device needs to be rooted for this file to be there?
Sorry, I am a noobster when it comes to this.
It also seems to already have a Kindle folder because I have the app already downloaded.

That means (on my Nexus 7, at least): /storage/sdcard0/Kindle (no, you don't have to root it.) And if, as you indicate, you already have the Kindle app installed, the folder is already there (on mine, it has a lower case "k").
In the Kindle app, you can download any of your purchases. Just make sure you go to the menu and select "Sync & Check for Items." I've never heard of a limitation on what devices you could download to. Do they show up in your Archived or All library? I would think they would. And they should have the little "download" symbol.
The book is called Campbell Biology if you want to see it. I haven't been able to find any other books like that.
http://www.amazon.com/Campbell-Biol...tmm_kin_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1344354876&sr=8-1
There is a link to it.
You can see how it states what devices it is for and it also won't allow me to send it to my device. I also noticed that it doesn't say the file type.
UPDATE: It appears to be a .azw4 file. Knowing that it isn't a typical mobi file could it still work?

That is a kindle edition book and it should appear on your kindle app, whether you're using kindle on your PC or android after you purchase it. Sign in to your kindle account, just hit sync and check for new items if it doesn't show up yet in your kindle app on nexus 7. After that, look under All Items, Downloaded Items or Archived Items. I use kindle also and I can download, open my text book on PC, Nexus 7 and my phone.
So I downloaded the sample and tried putting it in the kindle folder and the acw folder with no luck.

When you purchased your books did it have an option to send it to your android device? I can do that with every other book I found except this one.

Yes it did but that time I was only using kindle on my PC so I just sent it to my PC when I purchased my last book. But after, I installed kindle on my phone, signed in to my kindle/amazon account and had no problem downloading and opening it. Hence, same for Nexus 7, no problem downloading and opening the book, which I have already purchased.

Edit: So I tried to send the sample one for your specific book and it seems the option to send to my nexus 7 is greyed out. Try calling Amazon lol.
Are the .mobi files bound to a specific account? My wife wants to transfer 50 shades of grey to the nexus 7 from her phone, but my amazon account is on the tablet

I have actually called them a couple of times with no luck. The first person looked it up and just said that it wouldn't work. I tried getting info as to why from the second person but it became obvious that they are just there to answer phones and don't know much about anything other than telling you what the computer says.
After looking up that file type it seems that it is a proprietary format for textbooks that Amazon had been using for the last year. It is basically a PDF file with DRM to keep people like me from.... well you know.
The article that I read talks about how it can only be used with Kindle, IPad, or kindle for Mac and PC. It says something about it being released for Android but didn't give any dates. I know I basically just figured out my own problem but I hope this helps anyone else having this issue. In which case I found my books on www.coursesmart.com. Its a digital "rental" program that just sets your book to expire in 360 days from purchase. Not a terrible deal although I would prefer to be able to keep my books for reference.

I don't believe the mobi file is tied to any one account. I think even if your were to delete the mobi file from your device(or move it to another) you would still be able to download it from the account you received it from originally since it lists it as a book you purchased and still both enjoy it.

This is just a guess - haven't tried it: change your N7 amazon account to hers, sync it up to get the book. Let her read it, then change the account back to yours.
Another way, is to get the book, then see if by changing the N7 account back to yours, the book disappears, but I'm guessing it will. I've read of people not letting their actual Kindles sync (don't know if there's setting to allow only manual syncing, else just keep wifi off) to keep library & Prime books longer.

I'll try that. I hate drm
I have successfully installed Minecraft Pocket Edition demo (And the full paid version - although I bought the full version with my Toshiba Thrive) on 3 separate Elocity A7+ tablets.
I have been trying to do this through Amazon (but eventually it worked on Market - see below) and started trying to fool the App Store into thinking I had something else so some of what I did may not be needed, but I am ignorant enough to not know for sure and not interested in trying to find out right now.
Anyway, here is what I did on the second and third tablets after I got it going on the first;
1. Download and install Root Explorer (Speed Software) and Z4root (RyanZA)
2. Z4root - make root permanent
3. Change the build.prop file like this (Root Explorer asks if you want to make a back-up and I always say yes, but have never needed it)
BTW - this is lower/upper case specific, as in what is below is exactly like I have it in the tablet.
model=Nexus 7
brand=google
name=mysid
manufacturer=asus
lcd_density=160
4. Do this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1431967 - (this installs an older version of Market - not Google Play, and I think that is key to this whole thing working) but note these differences - I didn't bother with any of the back-up copy/paste stuff. I did add the extracted app files to the system app folder and then had to force a reboot. Upon reboot when Android set-up starts (it'll say you now have a Nexus 7!) make sure you choose to skip everything (it'll ask to sign-in or create a new google account or skip - make sure you skip all of it)
5. Copy paste the wpa_supplicant file like the instructions say.
6. In the system app file delete the Freing or Fring or (something like that) apk (I don't remember but will look it up on my wife's tablet later and edit this). When you delete this file it will say something like "Stopped working" blah blah and you'll need to do a force reboot.
7. Upon reboot you should have Wi-Fi back and there should be a market icon on your app screen (actually the icon was there before the final file paste in the bin folder (I think)).
8. Open that sucker up and log in.
9. Search for Minecraft Pocket Edition - find it, install it, go play! Note: It may take a while for Minecraft to show up in a search - I think the Fring thing above is just coincidence.
The Elocity A7+ is a really nice tablet for the $70-$80 I paid and now with Minecraft (my kids really like this game and I look at it as them being creative) they are even better. I am also assuming since I got Minecraft going I should be able to get a lot of other stuff that was previously unavailable due to "not compatible with your device" BS.
I am specifically trying to do this, for some time now. I think the buildprop is what is kicking my butt. When you say mysid, so you mean "mysid" or does that stand for something, like an original value to each device? A7+ btw

I am not sure how to copy and paste the build.prop - I am on my PC now and don't have access to the Tablet mentioned above (I'll look at it tonight).
But I did mean "mysid" - I don't remember specifically where I found those values for the Nexus 7 - just did a search or two. But I did bookmark this and might try it if the current set-up stops working - Change the following lines to:
ro.product.model=GT-I9100
ro.product.brand=samsung
ro.product.name=GT-I9100
ro.product.device=GT-I9100
ro.product.board=GT-I9100
(a few more rows down)
ro.product.manufacturer:samsung
I have read somewhere that the Play store is smarter now than back in February or March so I am thinking I can do this because I have installed an older version of Market. Originally when I posted the above if I logged onto Play through my PC it showed I had Minecraft PE installed on the faked devices (actually only showed 2 of the 3). Now it doesn't show Minecraft PE as being installed on either of the devices listed but I am pretty sure the apps are still installed and functional. I need to check again tonight. Another note - I think the step where I deleted Fring isn't needed - it was just coincidence that I did that and Market finally showed the apps for the faked devices.
This is good info, thank you. I am not working yet, but i will keep on working at it.
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T using Tapatalk
I just checked all the devices still have full access to Market and still have functioning apps even though the programs that "aren't compatible" aren't listed on Google Play.
Still not clear on how to copy and paste my build.prop here via the tablet...
it works!! i had to wipe clean with elocity's recovery procedure, but then going from there, it works! thank you sir.

By the way everyone, if it's not showing up, then just change your date in settings to something a week from now and watch for the little bugger to show up on the bottom left of your screen!!
As cute as this thing is (and I downloaded Windy night too) I would rather have the space than have it on my phone. Does anyone know where these files are stored. I've done multiple google searches and can't find anything except some people are a bit upset like me that it just installs without asking and I was seeing people say you couldn't delete it (but I assume they aren't rooted). Since I'm rooted if I can find it I'll save it to my PC but clear the space on the phone. BTW Spotlight and this data take up 318 Megabytes!

Click "CLEAR DATA" and "CLEAR CACHE" to erase all but the measly 24.7 MB that Spotlight Player takes up by itself. If you want to remove it completely, use Titanium Backup to uninstall it (though MY suggestion is to simply "freeze" it).

Unless you are concerned that they will "go away", just re-download them again if you need them. These files will likely only ever work on the Moto X anyways, so when the device becomes obsolete you will have no way of playing them. As long as you just "freeze" the Spotlight app, you can always "unfreeze" it later and re-download the augmented-reality cartoons.
Anyways, just a really quick look with Root Browser shows that the relevant files appear to be in /data/data
There are a couple folders in there that might be what you are looking for. The first is com.motorola.avatar and I also see "com.motorola.bug2go". I don't have "windy night" downloaded so I'm not sure what its folder might be.
Good Luck.
Thanks again - I'll look in there. As it turns out these same 2 apps seem to be built in (or maybe downloaded by) the Google Virtual reality app 'cardboard'. I didn't have Wifi turned on and was in airplane mode so I tend to think they came with the cardboard app. Just got the cardboard VR kit today and since the Moto X is one of the officially supported phones I gave it a try. Very impressive in how it all works especially in panning around and up and down - just like being in a real place. Image quality was not quite as sharp as I had hoped but with a $17 VR kit I don't think you can expect too much It may also be the image resolution needs to be kept low in the app in order for it all to work with the existing power of the processors. My phone got noticeably warm in just a few minutes running this but fun stuff !

I suggest you read the Kindle Fire for Beginners https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/guide-kindle-fire-for-beginners.1552547/ I found it very usefull and am still going through the documentation in the links. It was all written 10 years ago, so I won't be looking for a quick fix. Unless you find one first

Hi Luis
I have tried many ways, but none of them work. Its too old for anyone with the right skills to spend time on it. If you want to run non- Appstore applications then I found some of them work fine. The real question is why do you want to root it in the first place?

Thanks for responding. I wanted it root because most applications already tell me that they do not work with that old version. I'll have to end up throwing away that tablet. A pity. With which applications do you use it?. Thank you.
Hi Luis, I have side-loaded Fotoo that I use on my Android Phone, It creates a slideshow from your photo's. You can link it to One Drive so getting the photos onto your Kindle Fire's poor storage is not a problem. It also have a start and stop feature, so I just leave it plugged in and running 24/7
If it complains about Google Play then you will need to install some Google related files - see below.
I have attached the 4 files you need to get started, because the Fire is not rooted these files do not get you connected to the Play Store, but its seems its enough to get some apps working - maybe even the ones you have tried.
You need to install them in order, A,B.C then D, don't run them - they just need to be installed.
Good Luck.....
