My one year anniversary with my Speedy passed this past weekend. I'd been debating whether to take advantage of the last time I'd be able to invoke the one-year anniversary update with Sprint sooner rather than later. I've really been missing the world phone capabilities I had with my Blackberry (pre-Hero, pre-Shift) and have some international travel coming up so the immediate need was there. On the other hand, the draw of LTE later this year is also enticing. Living in Houston, I've had spotty luck with 4G, but at least it's there and we will be getting LTE.
The stars aligned and BestBuy came out with a price on the Motorola Photon of$49 this week; on top of which they're giving away a $50 gift card, so basically the phone is free. On top of that, when I got the Speedy last year, they were just introducing the Buy Back program and giving that away for free. I paid $99 for the Shift, so I figured I was getting $40 back. Lo and behold, the program pays back on the list price of the phone, so basically I got a free phone plus a$220 gift card for the buy back on the Shift!
I know I'm going to miss hanging out in these forums. I really want to thank all the devs, who are too many to be named, for their great ROMS, kernels, Mods, whatever, and all the others here that have been so willing to help freely and (for the most part) graciously. I took the phone back to stock before turning it in and was absolutely amazed how far I had been able to take it over the course of one year.
I've already started boning up a little on the MoPho in their forums, and the tone definitely seems different. I guess it's not just the phone I'll have to get used to.
Hope to cross paths again with some of you down the road. 'Til then...

Personally even if I had an upgrade, I wouldn't use it. The shift hasn't disappointed me at all (besides the flex cable)... Hopefully we get a dual core slider, wimax or lte would be irrelevant to me if we got a dual core slider from htc... That would be worthy of my upgrade

Yeah; I know about this one but as far as I can tell, it is CDMA only. The Photon is CDMA/unlocked GSM, which means I can use it overseas and even swap out the SIM card if I want to a local one when I travel.

Photon is great. Our biggest problem is losing 4g when unlocking. A fix is in the works though.

When was the last time you traveled abroad?
Also enjoy those international data and cellular roaming charges.
Most people just get a cheap prepaid phone when they are abroad.

Most countries don't support CDMA which is why you need a gsm phone or a phone that does both CDMA and gsm. Then you can buy a cheap prepaid sim card. You don't have to pay roaming charging on a prepaid sim card. I think that's the point he was trying to make.

Exactly.
Listen: I didn't mean to imply that this is a need for everyone; simply pointed out that it was a strong factor in my decision. I'm overseas at least once a year. I'll be in Europe for three weeks in three different countries in a couple of months. I have a cheap unlocked phone that I have used overseas but then have to carry two phones, because I still rely on my smartphone for wireless connectivity, which enables me to stay connected to everything wherever I can find a hotspot. I don't even travel with my laptop anymore. This way - one phone, abiity to have people call me on my own number if I want or plug in a prepaid sim card and use that.

So apparently Google is coming out with a N1.5 with 3G Band I (2100Mhz), II (1900Mz) and V (850Mhz), versus the N1 Bands I (2100Mhz), IV (1700Mhz) and VIII (900Mhz).
I do not understand why Google's flagship HTC handset doesn't support every frequency and they (whomever "they" may be) simply enable/disable in software?!
Anyway, I guess this means N1.5 will work on AT&T 3G.
Any insider tracking the Google release date for the AT&T capable Nexus?

I was told by my AT&T representative for the SE region of RS that the phone is ready and is being tested to meet AT&T specs for speed on not only 3G but the upgraded HSPA networks. They however did not specify a date other than 2010 for the AT&T version. Soooo.... we shall see, normally they are right with the products coming to the market, like the Moto backflip which I knew personally was going to AT&T over a year ago.

But AT&T being the best service in my area I can't wait for this!

There is no chipset/antenna design that supports all UMTS bands at the same time. The bgr was just wrong, there are two distinct bb9700: one for t-mobile and one for att.

I wonder what they are going to do to the nexus..remove the unlockable bootloader perhaps? I also wonder if Verizon is going to do the same...
Being on ATT with a nexus one, I really do want to be excited by this news as I am tired of being on edge (thankfully I have wifi available most of the time), but I am concerned about the lengths ATT will go to after seeing what they pulled with the backflip.
I will just sit and wait and watch. Worst case scenario, my cell contract will run dry next year and if ATT buggers up the nexus I can always migrate to TMO with a new contract...best case scenario...I can sell my current nexus to offset the cost of a new one that will take advantage of ATT's 3g...hopefully by then all those dreaded iphones will have moved on reducing the dropped call rate and slow 3g found in my area (seattle).
Two changes needed to support different 3G bands:
1. Antenna
2. Baseband firmware

Since at&t is buying out T-Mobile, just Google it I'm not posting links, is this the true end of our phones because at&t said all 3G phones will need to be upgraded to support their towers and speed they will provide. In addition what are everyone's thoughts on the matter?? It seems like we'll all min the USA have to buy new phones BC they probably wont do the upgrade for free xD
Sent from my HTC Magic using XDA App
You don't have to change anything unless ATT drops 2G.
I don't think it will be the end of our phones the 3G upgrades may come over the air or we may have to go old school & actually have to get firmware upgrades in the shop. I don't really think T-Mobile is much slower than At&t, after all, T-Mobile pushed the GSM network in the US, which made everyone else play catch up, since GSM was already in the EU for several years prior. Anyway, as long as we have XDA & the great people giving us Froyo & Gingerbread for our G1/Dreams & MT3G(which we were never meant to have in the 1st place), we will never be too far behind...I hope.
Just my 2 cents...
AT&T motto: If you can't beat `em, buy `em!
Its not necessarily a software issue because At&t said that themselves that all 3G phones will eventually have to be replaced to handle the new network.. AKA moving everyone to 4G and more expensive plans lol..
If they're going to pay for the upgrades themselves im all fine and for it bring on the new phones for development, and they keep our plans i will be extremely happy!
But if we have to get new phones and new contracts a lot of people will probably drop them. I know i cant get the deal i have now ANY where else for as keep.. Unlimited data, texts and 750 shared mins bt two phones for 100 bucks a month. not bad in my opinion.
3g phones are supposed to fail. Get a 4g phone. I heard T-Mobile customers will get iPhones somewhere but wouldn't count on that coming to pass. I'll get the pyramid if it hits T-Mobile in may like reported by T-Mobile news. Just ride the train and see what happens. If u get robbed bail out. My 2¢ anyway

I wet into a AT&T store today and there data line for "unlimited" is $45 a month with out tethering it was around $65-$70 with tethering (guys at the store were as helpfull as a bricked phone and didnt tell me much), (i currently pay $40 with tethering) ontop of your standared plans... to get a plan like yours (also mine) would cost us around $150 or more, im just hopin that we will be able to keep our plans how we have them due to the "grandfathering" law, not sure if it is covered from a buy out though...
Something for us all to look into i guess and see what we come up with
I got a feeling that the govt isn't going to allow it. There seems to be a lot of media attention lately as to how it will hurt consumers. Mergers like this are not necessarily a done deal.

It is when companies own the Supreme Court.
So I am about to get booted off of my parents plan (college kid) come may. Would it be a smart option to buy a tmobile plan right now hoping that their prices wont increase with the potential merger? I have heard their plans are cheaper..
I am using an unlocked g1 on at&t right now- and I havent had much problem with at&t- I think all cell phones companies are low grade scammers... I do not use any data, just wifi, and probably text 500/month, talk 500/month..
thought?
I talked to a few tmobile people and they all say that the plan you currently have will remain the same price IF the merge happens
stick wit tmobile. tmobile will still carry out their prices. the two companies merged. which is great cuz HTC and other phone companies wont have to make exclusive phones for Tmobile etc. it will be available to both companies. so we get benefit of the new phones.
If noticed on alot of 3g and 4g phones are already set up for at&t aswell as t-mobile so im really not seeing a issue with the buy out except maybe a new sim card.

Tmobile sim cards suck I will move to a att one myself. I never had a problem with them but tmobile ive gone through three in less then a year.
at and t owns us and i hate it
With the merger no one needs to upgrade phones. If ppl read tmo's news, at&t pretty much just wants tmo's 4g capable towers and servers. If the merger Goes threw at&t will pretty much be selling world phones (phones that's will support tmos 17 & 21 hundred 3/4g bands and att bands).. all in all they just want the real 4g capable towers tmo has ..
PS ... my 2cents... the merger ain't good for no one.. monopoly ain't good! (Damn bush for reallowing monopolyzation)

I'm with Tmobile now and using the Atrix unlocked. Try to go down that route if you have the resources to buy it outright. Otherwise, you cannot go wrong with the Atrix. The upcoming gingerbread update in the summer is only going to make it better. They've already ironed out most of the issues of early adopters with the new 4.1.83 update. The full power of this phone is yet to be unleashed.
i have an atrix on tmobile and i dont think its worth it honestly the phone has a lot of issues this is my second one from motorola and this one doesnt freeze as much but there is def a manufacturing defect there is a small section of my screen that doesnt work on either phone i had and im just living with it now becuz i dont want to send it in again and wait two weeks because it has been out getting fixed longer than i have had it I was thinking of trading mine for a g2x

What a run on sentence, not a single period in that whole statement.
But on topic,
If you can return the phone and terminate service with no cost, then do it. But if you are to far into your contract and you are facing a termination fee, I would try to find a Atrix on craigslist or a trade and sell cell phone store. Yes the bootloader is locked, but there is people hard at work trying to find a solution. Yes you could wait for the Samsung Galaxy S2, but there is no guarantee it will be a better phone.

I was also wondering this. And I will have to pay an early cancellation fee but with the g2x I got a partial upgrade and ended up paying $400 with a $50 rebate. it will cost me $200 to cancel service and,$99 for the atrix through radioshack. But the g2x is not great too many bugs and tons of backlight bleed not worth the $350 I payed with a contract extension.

OP, I'd say give it a try. Do you know of anyone who has AT&T where you live/work? I know every carrier is different in every location, so it may be worth it to give AT&T a try. I personally love the Atrix and have been with AT&T since they were Cingular. I know for my fiance, when she had T-Mobile, speeds were good right next to a tower, but it seemed like every time we traveled, she was roaming on AT&T Edge. This was true for where her parents live and where my parents live, too. At those locations, I was on AT&T 3G and speeds were great. So for us, AT&T has good 3G in more places than T-Mobile. But, everyone's mileage may vary. What is good for one person with regards to phone/network may not be good for the next person.
EDIT: oh, and you have a trial period with AT&T. If you aren't satisfied, return the Atrix and AT&T service and stick with what works for you.

I left Tmo on 04/10/11 for ATT. So far, so good. Love the Atrix since .83. Atrix is a suitable phone if you want android. iPhone is fine too. I'm still within the 30 grace period and I'm deciding to go with ATT for my mobile carrier.
My mom loves the the free mobile to mobile (no minutes used regardless of carrier).
I'm converting and I have no qualms. Haven't had any dropped calls (yet). I'd say go for ATT.
keep your g2x stay with tmo. its basically the same phone just a lg body instead of motorola. my buddy has the g2x. plus by next year all the networks tmo and att have will be shared and there will be new phones out. get your handset replaced if your having issues it may be hardware lemon. the atrix has its issues too no phone is without issues. youd just be trading one tegra based device for another and getting a slower network that costs more
The problem is the screen bleed on the g2x I've looked at several devices and they all have it. And our makes the screen look like crap. plus I've been missing way too many calls at work because bad reception. And I really want a tegra 2 over the other dual core processors.

Thanks for posting this. So now who are they going to use for LTE?
I think they are is going with Lightsquared. Found the article in the link below.

I believe they're still going with Lightsquared. After all the 1600mhz band they're referring to belongs to Lightsquared, not Sprint. Sprint is still planning on rolling out LTE over their existing 1900mhz band.

So they are going to have 2 bands of LTE?
No if you read it says Sprint is terminating the agreement unless LightSquared meets their conditions on some interference issues. This is why I'm going to Verizon after my contract is up. At least then I'll have good 4G where I live and a decent LTE device to use it on. The Evo Shift will not magicaly turn into a LTE device once they get the network up and running. Unless sprint rolls out with something really good before the end of this year I'm leaving sprint.

All signs point to GNexus launch on April 15th. HTC One S is also rumored to hit us this year (I'd say probably late summer/early fall). There's still another big electronics expo thing this year, I believe, so there's a possibility we'll see more phones then.
Link below adds a little more fuel to the fire. One thing I'm not seeing in all these leaks, and rumors. A device with a physical Ketboard. But anyway check the link below, good read

I've been thinking about leaving Sprint as well. With the extra $10 a month they wanted when 4g first came out and now the shaky prospects of if Sprint will even use WiMax or LTE has just put me over the top on the extra $240 over the lifetime of the contract I'm paying for "the possibility to use more bandwidth".
3g where I live is at best 100K download (maybe 400k late at night). Unless they can secure full 4g coverage in the areas I use my phone and offer me a drop dead sexy deal on a phone when my contract comes up I'm most likely going to bail.
I would have bailed back when they changed the family plan with company discounts but figured the extra $7 a month wasn't worth the effort... Now I'm wishing I had made the attempt.
I'm staying with sprint for the unlimited data and San Antonio is one of the first cities to get LTE so thats a bonus for me

Yeah true but you don't know what LTE devices they will have. What if it's all crappy phones to start. The Evo Shift will NEVER be a LTE device and therefore will NEVER be able to use LTE services.

if the one x does come to sprint I might get it but I'm not big on 4g as it is. I rarely use it so I can wait for a slider no problem

Yeah I guess your right and I saw a video of it and it looks really nice still! From what I was reading Sprint is planning on doing away with unlimited data and put a cap on it like all the other carriers.

Of course it won't. Neither will any of the current phones that are out. You'd obviously have to upgrade to use LTE no matter what carrier you're on, so what's the big deal? It's no different than upgrading from whatever your previous phone was to the Shift for the Wimax 4G.

What provider is next best for upgrades , decent phones, pricing and customer service?? Feel free to rant and rave.

IMO, Sprint sucks... I refuse to deal with AT&T.. my next carrier if Tmobile were to collapse would be Verizon.... but it really depends on your area

Agree, verizon seems like the next best choice. Our good magenta is not the same :-(
There is enough hate in the world. Why can't we all get along here ...?
I used to have Verizon like 5+ years ago. They gad good coverage. I always turned to Tmobile though because of their cheap plans and customer service plus they had a good selection of phones. Not to mention wifi calling.

They're all horrible. Unfortunately I can't stand CDMA and not having a SIM card so... I'm stuck with the blue deathstar or T-Mobile who compresses the crap out of my images.
Yeah. Ill have to stick with sim card.

IMHO, best part of ANY GSM carrier is the ability to use phones not available in the US from other countries (i.e. GSM EVO 3D)

Also makes it easy to swap upgrades among accounts and quickly switching to a backup if your phone breaks

Exactly why I won't use CDMA. I enjoy having a much broader range of potential devices--especially unbranded devices. And if my phone breaks or I brick it out of momentary stupidity, I can quickly swap it for one of the other phones I have.
What's funny to me about this is they 1900 people will be relocated. I call bs on that. All they will do is have them far away to fire them. The center here (where I used to work) had 700 employee's about 2 years ago. Since the announcement of the AT&T buyout they started firing everyone they could. The same center now has about 200 employees or less. If they're struggling for $$ so bad why aside a bunch of money to pay the executives. T-mobile executives have screwed thousands of employees. I was lucky enough to find a better job before most of this started but I've had a lot of friends to just come in one morning and for no reason walk right back out. The unemployment office here doesn't ask any questions anymore once you say you worked for T-Mobile. They know they're firing everyone. Awful situation if you ask me.

You should look at this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDxJoGv3FLA&feature=channel
And tell me they are the next best choice. If I have have to use it as a phone for data, I pick up my SGS 2 GT9100 on AT&T. If I don't care about if works or not I use my razr for the bit faster data speeds.)
