How to root Gateway TP A60 (Futureshop A500 Version) - Acer Iconia A500

Hi,
I just want to share with the community. If you want to root a Gateway TP A60, follow the timmyDean's method from XDA but before starting, update Version.cfg file:
Line:
[PRODUCT]
1 = A500
to
[PRODUCT]
1 = TPA60W
Enjoy!
Chaton

This works? I upgraded mine to 3.2 before rooting it, silly me.. and have been looking for a way to do it.

Well, it worked on mine after I accepted the latest update (last week of January).
You may have to install Gateway USB driver first. I don't know if it changed something but I did it before trying to update my tablet.

Good info to know. Gotta give a little love to Gateway.

Turn your Gateway A60 into an Acer Iconia 500 and get ICS
For those of you who have a Gateway TPA60W (Acer Iconia A500 clone) and are desperate to get Ice Cream Sandwich, the way I was able to do it was to follow timmydean's method here to root the Acer A500.
Once you do that, your Gateway A60W will effectively become an Acer A500 and the only evidence left that it was ever a gateway tablet is the logo on the back cover. (Everything, firmware, device name, model number, splash screen when you boot, color scheme, etc will all list Acer as the manufacturer.)
After that step is accomplished, go to Google Play, download and install the Acer Upgrade tool that is necessary to get the ICS update. Once that is installed, go back to settings and check for a system update. You should then be able to download and install the official Acer ICS upgrade without issue.
Works like a charm.
But, as always, back up first!

Thanks! I just used timmyDean's method with the instructions in the OP to flash an A60. ICS update running now.

TPA60
I use the timmyDean's method to upgrade my TPA60 but it does not work it still jam after entering my serial. I tried 4 time and it still do the same .
Can someone tell me what happend ?

Did you make sure to add a 0 before the serial number string?

Hey, I'm planning to root my dad's Gateway A60 and update it to ICS. Once I flash the device and get the 'P A S S' message on the tablet, what should I do next? Install BusyBox and SU tools, then Backdoor tool, then turn OTA off? Do I have to even do all that other stuff just to update it to ICS?

It's not a serial number. It's supposed to be the uid number. There's an app with the tool that gets your uid.

Hey guys, I just bought one of these for my father in law, and was trying to get it updated/rooted/de-bloated, and it's firmware 3.0.1 at the moment. It's a TP-A60W (not sure if the W changes anything), but I keep seeing that everything is for firmware 3.2 and while the tablet tells me there is an update available, it will not install it - just fails everytime. So I'm wondering if I am safe to use this method on 3.0.1, or if there is some way I can work around to update it to 3.2 first, or if there is a different method safe to use on 3.0.1??
Thanks in advance!

[TUT] Revert OTA 3.2 back to 3.0.1

Well as long as we have ICS OTA this thread seems to be less needed. Anyway, I'll leave it this way in case someone is stuck on HC 3.2 without root and without being able to update to ICS. How to get root on your stock ICS, look here or here
__________________________________________________
If you’re reading this may be you’re stuck with a 3.2 OTA update without ROOT privileges on your A500. This tutorial explains how to revert your OTA 3.2 to 3.0.1. Original article for those of you who speak Russian here
Thanks to begemot666.
These methods could be used to unbrick your device i.e. when boot.img and recovery.img are corrupt.
METHOD 1 - thanks, vache
It is best to use a PC with Windows 7 on it. Most of the problems reported seem to be XP related.
1. Download and unpack the archive provided by vache here - for Firefox rightclick and select "Save link as".
MIRROR
2. Get your UID (without it nothing is going to work). How to do that – read sc2k’s itsmagic thread. Enable USB debugging on the tablet.
3. Edit the file CPUID inside the extracted folder with a text editor - you have to change this line with your UID number but you need to add “zeroxzero” in front of it, example: if your UID is 37c7040425ff0d7, at the end it needs to look like 0x037c7040425ff0d7.
Save the file.
4. Connect your tablet with the PC.
5. Run PBJ20upgrade.exe as administrator and follow app instructions. USB drivers are provided with this archive and the app installs them automatically according to your system.
6. After driver installation the app scans your tablet and it will show version number of your current firmware and version number of the firmware that is going to be applied after restoration. Follow all application instructions. Tablet will switch to APX mode with ACER logo on its screen and on your PC you’ll see the progress bar of the process. Before the beginning of the flashing process the app will ask you for identification number. Here you enter your UID which you have placed in the CPUID file with a zero infront. Example: 037c7040425ff0d7
Below are screenshots from the EUU app that's used to downgrade to 3.0.1
The whole things takes 10 or more minutes so be patient. Then you’ll have HC 3.0.1
All data on your system and data partitions will be lost. Storage will remain intact.
7. Once on Honeycomb 3.0.1, install Iconiaroot 1.3, root your tab and then install CWM from thor's site (there you can find the latest version) or use Acer Recovery Installer from the Market, or look at the original thread here
8. Boot into CWM and flash whatever ROM you like!
METHOD 1 update: You can use timmyDean 's modified and tweaked EUU tool that will flash directly a rooted stock 3.2.1 ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1307539
METHOD 2 - thanks GamezR2EZ
This is even easier because it does not need your UID. It is just flashing as a normal update but actually it is an older HC version that is rootable by Iconiaroot. Additionally method 2 leaves your data intact and you will be able to backup your apps after downgrading with tools like Titanium Backup. Thanks heldc for pointing this out.
1. Download this package (named "downgrade not stable"). mirror1 mirror2 mirror3
2. Extract the update.zip from it and place it on your external SD card.
3. Turn off your tab and then turn it back on while holding Volume Down key. This will automatically flash the update.zip from your SD card.
4. After flashing is finished you'll have unstable Honeycomb 3.0.1 - gives errors and crashes but you only need it to root and install CWM. If it fails to boot try to hard reset your device *.
5. Install Iconiaroot 1.3, root your tab and then install CWM from thor's site (there you can find the latest version) or use Acer Recovery Installer from the Market, or look at the original thread here
6. Boot into CWM and flash whatever ROM you like!
GOOD LUCK !
* How to hard reset your Iconia A500
1. Turn off your tablet
2. Place the screen lock button on the left (red not visible)
3. Hold Volume UP + Power button
4. After the vibration, release the power button and toggle the screen switch few times left-right until you see the following lines appear on the screen
Erasing Userdata...
Erasing Cache...
You can now release Volume UP button.
5. In the top left corner you'll see formatting has started.
6. Tablet will reboot
downgrade from stock 3.2 now possible ...all right !!!!
Thank you so very much.... it worked for me ... kudos kudos ....

Maybe it could help : EUUs_SBK_Acer_A500_1.016.05_COM_GEN1
You can post it in 4PDA.ru.
A little guidance please.
Will try this at home.
edit:
I'm following what says on c2k’s itsmagic thread and ran the batch file (01_backup.bat) but my tablet is not rooted.
Using the manual method in getting my UID, how to execute the "dd"?
Manual method:
1. Get your UID (= USB Serial number, has up to 16 chars) (see at the end of this post how to get). If you brick your device and do not know the UID, you are lost.
2. Backup all partitions (except cache + data) with dd:

I apologize for the stupid question, but it's better to be sure before doing something wrong.
I have an A501, I suppose this procedure is still valid, but I have to skip the point where the product name is changed from A501 to A500.
It's correct?
thanks

I've exactly the same problem, with the 2 methods...
Edit : I finally found the solution : if the program says "UID is incorrect", you must add a 0 (zero) in front of it - for example, if your UID is 280404412345678, you must write 0280404412345678 - and it works perfectly !
Thank your very much !!!
I wonder if one of the devs on here who are smarter than myself could investigate this further and maybe figure out enough from it to come up with a root exploit for 3.2? (seems like it manages to bypass the security of the bootloader to go back to 3.0.1, so it seems logical the same exploit could be used for a direct, and possibly simple, root?)

Appears that you have to put a 0 in front of your UID in the last step (wasn't listed in the tutorial, but their example shows it)
On a side note, I've done that, and it claims to be doing the upgrade, but my tablet screen went completely blank (tutorial says it should have the acer logo) and the progress bar is also blank (not moving at all in 10 minutes now)... not entirely sure what's happening, but I have a feeling not much is working right...
The 2nd method worked for me. FYI if you've ever backed up your rom with CWM your UID is in a txt file in the folder of the backed up ROM. Just omit the 0x at the beggining of this file and copy and paste that when it asks you to enter your UID but use the whole UID you find in this file when copying it into the CPUID.txt file THANKS SO MUCH!!! Im now on 3.01 and ready to root/flash this sucker back to my backed up ROM>
I have now tried both methods without any success
Method 1 can't see the tablet, it tells me to do a pin-hole reset and click "yes"... but that just takes me back to the same slide.
Method 2 gets all the way to flashing the image, however the status bar never moves (have left it for 2 hours) and the tablet just sits at a blank screen (not the acer logo as the tutorial says)
I tried reflashing the stock rom, factory resetting, clearing the cache, and trying again, all with exactly the same results.
I'm still stuck on stock, unrooted, 3.2
And the worst thing is, with so many people having success with this, it's likely to become the "official" way of rooting 3.2, leaving nobody any incentive to find another way, and me stuck without root
My screen also went completely blank but it still worked and booted into the Acer logo when it was copying the ROM to the tablet with a message of "entering download mode" or something like that in the upper right corner. Once it was done flashing it had in bock ASCII art letters "OK" above the acer logo and then rebooted.
I'm guessing that it didn't take over 2 hours, and that you had a status bar on the computer doing something though...

It's old and works only on 9.2.1.17 or .13 as far as I remember so even viperMod is better but worth try.
yes you are right my firmwire was 9.2.1.17 thanks for clarification
Help rooting. I tried everything...
Hi, i have read lots of threads and forums i have investigated and tested. I tried initially with "tf101 ics root.zip" i did the syncing and running of "run.bat" followed every step, and nothing. Made variations of the same process and nothing.
Then i tried with RazorClaw and a advice with "device lacks need file" appear.
Then i tried SparkyRoot and it read "Exploitable file not found".
I dont now what to do anymore, i just want to "Freeze" all the bloatware and crappy uninstallable apps that auto load on my Transformer.
i Got the Asus Transformer TF-101 with ICS 4.0.3.
I uploaded a screen print with firmware versions installed in bit.ly/MILGVv
Please help!

Please help, is not running properly for me.
I do download ans unzip OneclickrecoveryV0.4.2
I reseted my TF101 to factory defaults
Enabled USB debug mode
Installed Asus sync on my Windows 10 laptop (also from ASUS). It detects my device.
I run on my computer with admin privileges "EasyRecoveryV0.42.bat"
When "manually" installing the adb drivers It says that the actual are newer and doesn't do that part
The device is listed as a long list of numbers
When the zergs are rushing (just kidding), it says:
"failed on '/data/local/tmp' - not a directory"
and then the message:
"adb server is out of date. killing...
* daemon strated successful * "
is shown many times, and a few more errors.
The device does not restart or do anything by it's own. I don't see blue bars or anything.
Ok, then I uninstalled asus sync, and everything looks nice until first reestart.
The 1st restart is ok, but after requiring the second one, prompting you to see a blue bar... the restart happen but the blue bar does not.
It looks like it¡s not making anything
oneclick recovery console says:
"
If you do, you might have a *very* shiny paperweight.
Continue? Y/n
starting, this will take awhile...
/dev/block/mmcblk0p4: cannot open for write: permission denied
"
From this on, I can't fix anything and the device is running like always
Any suggestion?

[Q] How-To Downgrade Official ICS to HC

After the OTA update to ICS on my 3.2.1 Gen 2, U.S. a500 (unrooted and unaltered at the time), my accelerometer seemed to stop working. (The curious thing about this is that the accelerometer will work only if i reset with a paperclip).
Factory Resets don't seem to do anything.
I want to go back to 3.2.1 HC, and then reinstall the ICS update, how do I do this? I am currently rooted on ICS via blackthunder.

Couple options;
1. check out some of the custom Roms which may have stable working accelerometer.
2. Use blackthund3rs apxflash tool in my sig 2 go back, I not done it but I'm sure if u asked on the thread sum 1 will help out.
Our builds hc 7.014.15 have not recd an ota yet, which may bode well for thinking that Acer may be working on a patch to fix the issues in the first release. All conjecture of course

Acer Drivers from Acer Support Download Page
a pc running win7/vista ideally, xp is a bit flaky
dot net framework 4 installed on yr pc
terminal emulator from the market
Your cpuid which you can try getting now - the downgrade wont work without it
open terminal emulator app
and type in dmesg > /mnt/sdcard/dmesg.txt
open the text file and look for androidboot.serialno=
this is your cpuid - write it down and keep it safe!!!!
you also need to enter download or apx mode manually via button combo, this can be tricky and can become
extremely frustrating!!! It involves pressing and holding in the reset and power buttons in just the right way
....but full instructions are given.
thats pretty much it, most of the process is done via your pc -
the cpuid and getting it into download mode are the most difficult part
there are on screen instructions all the way through to help you
i've attached an image of a "cannot detect your iconia screen" which you
need to get to first before you can enter download mode....some people have had real trouble getting this to come up -
but only because they're weren't following the instructions to the letter....
oh and it will WIPE YOUR DATA so backup what you don't want to lose......
You will end up with a Stock Rooted 3.2.1 gen2 with CWM
whatever way you decide Good Luck

[Q] Another A500 frozen on logo Acer...

I've tried to boot on these 2 ics roms in recovery mode : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1699277, the install starts and then the Android man falls...
I've tried to flash (flash.dat) in apx and my computers disconnects the tablet...
I've tried to get my cpuid with windows ans ubuntu : didn't work...
Maybe someone here is going to have an idea to help me? There seem to be very competent members, here!

If you go to tegraowners forum and read/install one of the recoveries there - in the various topics it will explain how to "really format data-data/media"
From there you will once again be able to install roms etc.

The tablet had no recovery on an sd card (no sd card at all before the crash!), so I've downloaded many different updates since the crash, and it doesn't work. Maybe it was not the good solution, though;.. Which recovery do you advise me to download?

I think maybe you misunderstand what recovery is
It is a low level program that is on an internal partition
you open it by holding volume- while pushing power button
when it opens if it just immediately tries to load from the sd card then it is stock
if it opens with a menu then it should also say somewhere what recovery it is.
It is also somewhat important to know what android you had on the tab and whether it was rooted and what bootloader version.
there is an A500 manager at tegraowners by blackthund3r that will update the bootloader install a recovery and root the tablet.
if it's an official acer rom the afterota will probably help fix it.
barring all that - if you sign up to be a tegraowner member and pm(private message) me I can dropbox you babsector as well.
suggested recovery would be the new twrp or the 1.7.3 cwm recovery

Thank you for these explanations, you're right , I was confused about all that!
To be clear about what you said : when I push volume- and power, there are a few lines written (erasing... sd car... booting recovery kernel...) then the Android fells down. so it is stock, isn't it?
The tablet wasn't rooted I believe because I never touched anything since I bought it ( october 2011) but I can't find on the box or notice which Android was on it...
But I don't understand your advice (I don't know a lot about tablets + foreign language : forgive me!) : do you advice me to try "an A500 manager at tegraowners by blackthund3r that will update the bootloader" or try "babsector" (don't know what it is...)
By the way I registered on tegraowners just now, as woukou.
Thanks a lot to take time for my problem

There are numerous methods to fix this
first login to tegraowners and pm me with
Did you get updates from acer and install them since you bought the tablet
Do you know if it was Ice Cream Sandwich or Honeycomb running on the tablet
do you have your cpuid or know what it is ?
Is your tablet an Acer A500 ,A501 or something other ?

First, I can't mp you because "We are sorry, but you are not authorised to use this feature. You may have just registered here and may need to participate more to be able to use this feature. ", maybe you can mp me and I will reply...
But I can answer you here:
- I only had 1 update since I bought the tablet (maybe 1 year ago) and it was the regular Acer update.
- I don't know at all if it was Ice Cream sandwich or Honeycomb on it (bought in october 2011, and I still have the box if it can help...)
- I don't have the cpuid, and I tried yesterday to get it through Windows (when the tablet appears in usb) and through Ubuntu (file called apx.c, etc...) and I didin't work unfortunately...
- My tablet is A500 Iconia tab
I hope that will help...

Still bricked...
Hello,
It's beeen a long time ( lot of work and not many time to spend on the tablet...) but I did try all tips you gave me, and I realize I can't go any further without that CPUID!
I tried methods to get CPUID that are described on this post :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25429111#post25429111
- With A500 manager : my PC sees my connected "in APX" tablet, but it doesn't want to give me a serial number...
- With usb deview I can get the snid (that is also on the box) and that is only 11 characters...
- With Ubuntu : the PC doesn't recognize the tablet at all (normal or APX mode)
- Methods 4, 6 and 7 won't work because my tablet is stuck on Acer logo
And I have no idea how to use methods 2 and 5 (sorry...)
Are there any other methods to try with my PC (Windows 7- X64)
Can someone help me? I'm crazy about that tablet that starts but doesn't work!
Thanks in advance if you can!
Tried these too:

Hurra! and Noooo
Hello,
I managed to bring my tablet to life! (with getting my cpuid with Ubuntu and updating with EUU)
BUT now I want to get a real update and I can't! When I launch it, the tablet says "you wifi is too unstable, try later" I tried at a neighbour's, and it's the same : it comes from the tablet!
What would you suggest?

Just for info, it seems Acer has shut down it's update servers. I have an a501 (recently bricked forever), and an A701. Neither can get updates. Usually, I get the message "Network coverage is poor, try a different location". So it seems these are messages generated from the tablet. More than likely as a triggered response from their old servers.
I'm on direct wifi
Also, acer has been deleting their available update ROMs from their support servers. I grabbed some a couple days ago, and now today they are gone!
Pretty sure Acer is getting out of the tablet business, or at least they act like it.
Ok thanks for the information, it's not only my tablet that can't update!
But, what do you think would be the best (and most simple!) solution to run ICS like it used to do?
Every link I found to get an update for 3.0.1 are dead...
I'm not a specialist, and all tutorials for rooting and install ICS (rom or custopm) seem complicated and risky!
Thanks in advance for your advice

Well, there are a couple of methods to update manually. The key, is getting the correct match of 3.x.x to 4.x.x. Sometimes the ICS updates will use a "patch" install, and it's very specific to which current ROM is installed.
Tell you what, remind me again which tablet (500 or 501) you have, and I'll take a look at what I have on my own servers, and maybe we can get you upgraded manually. Pretty simple really.

I tell you all what I know and can read on the tablet:
Acer Iconia tab A50016GB Wifi
Android version 3.0.1
Kernel version 2.6.36.3-00001-gf991e5d
Build number ACER_A500_1.016.05_COM_GEN1
I hope it's enough, thanks again!

You can try those full ICS updates in the first thread of this forum. I believe they are full a500 ICS updates. There are 4 of them, and you may have to try them all. One of them may work. Not sure if they will update from 3.0.1 though.
I'm mobile right now, and can't personally check them.

[Q] help with upgrading a501 from 3.2 to 4.0.3

hi xda-ders
this is my first post , and i've been re-directed here to ask questions about my acer a501. so i've had my a501 for 20 months, before it suddenly developed the well documented issue of mainboard memory failure which cannot be fixed by software. i returned my a501 to acer nz to be repaired under warranty, and they replaced the mainboard. unfortunately this mainboard was also faulty with no wireless, so i had to return it again for another round of repairs.
i finally got my a501 back on friday, and realised that the mainboard replacement was on android 3.2. previously i had upgraded to android 4.0.3 using the acer iconia tab update app, but this doesn't seem to work anymore.
1. when i do a settings - about tablet - system update check, i get the message "network coverage is currently poor. please move to a location with better coverage to continue." googling this i find that acer no longer does OTA updates and have shut down their servers so i can't do it this way.
2. i called acer nz for support on upgrading to 4.0.3. they directed me to the acer nz support website where apparently i can download the update.zip and install it manually. following the instructions exactly, i can't get this to work and keep ending up with the android robot with a yellow ! icon.
can somebody help me with the steps needing to update android 3.2 to 4.0.3 manually? i've tried searching the web and xda but many of the threads are quite old from 2 years ago when ics was first released. thank you
my tablet info:
model number = A501
android version = 3.2
baseband version = Cust:R3C01 Config:R3S/3 Conf:R3C01 Protocol:R3B01 App:R3C01
kernel version = 2.6.36.3+
build number = Acer_A501_4.031.24_COM_GEN1
Did you try to update with a 2gb micro sd? The standard recovery doesn't recognize "big" micro sd., from what I saw.
One thing: I'm not 100% sure you can update your tablet without updating recovery too. Just in case, retrieve the cpuid of your tablet, it could be helpful if it goes in boot-loop!!
Same request but different scenario
So I have Acer A500 currently running Honeycomb version installed by tool "tdv4_rollback_rom". This tool helps you to get on with valid cwm recovery and rooted honeycomb rom. I assume this brings me to HC bootloader, which is not compatible with any ICS ROM. So if I understand correctly, I will have to upgrade to unlocked V8+ ICS Bootloader and from that point on flash ICS ROM (Lightspeed or Tabooney...). If my understanding is right, I am following correct guides to get unlocked ICS Bootloader on tab using AUTOMATED A500APXFlash tool. Everything goes fine and I do get PASS screen at end. After reboot, I boot in Skrilax V8 bootloader and then boot into recovery to flash ICS ROM. After flashing any ICS ROM, I am expecting my tablet to boot into corresponding ROM but after booting into primary kernel message, I am stuck at boot logo (acer, green droid based on ICS ROM I picked). No matter what I do, I can't pass this splash screen.
So far, I have tried bunch of things,
- tdv4_rollback_rom tool
- Afterota (to flash custom recovery and bootloader)
- APXManager to get unlocked ICS Bootloader V9 on tablet (Automatic and Manual as well). This has ran successfully (PASS message) multiple times, while there were times where it got stuck in second stage of uploading.
- At end, I have tried BabSector, "a501 A.bat" ran successfully, Booted in recovery formatted System (twice), While running "a501 B.bat" (in APX Mode) as following step, I got error message "bootloader status: Bct Write Failed (code: 22) message: nverror:0x42008 (0x6042008) flags: 0"
Anytime, when I am stuck in APX mode (while doing any of the above mentioned steps), I run back to tdv4_roolback_rom tool to get proper recovery and HC rom running on tablet.
So is it partially bricked or I am following some wrong steps?
Any suggestions to fix this issue? Or I should keep HC running on tablet? I am open to run pure ICS stock as well with stock recovery and bootloader, but darn thing won't pass the boot logo.
Thanks

actually i tried updating with a 1gb microsd but it didn't work. i have 2gb and 16gb cards at hand, but neither of them works so i don't think it's the microsd that is the problem.
how do i update recovery? i'm happy to use other types of recovery if i can get to 4.0.3 but so far all my reading hasn't showed any full factory acer rom that i can flash. :crying:

In the old times (a couple of years ago) I managed to update my Acer A500 from 3.2 to 4.0.3 (the leaked one from Acer) without installing another recovery, but maybe for the A501 the things are a little different.

in the old times on my previous tablet, i updated my a501 using the OTA check update app from within the tablet. i assume that is directly from acer, however it seems the servers have been shutdown and therefore i can't use that method anymore. hence why i'm asking if anyone here on xda has the full 4.0.3 that i can use to overwrite 3.2 version.

cool thanks for that link. i have downloaded the ICS rom and opened up the zip file, it doesn't look like a normal update.zip? what does leaked rom mean, not original from acer?
i'm worried that i might brick my tablet since i'm new at this flashing thing.

"Leaked" means that it comes from Acer, but it's not official (maybe it was a beta, maybe not, I don't know). From what I read, you only have to follow this flow chart in order to install it. Remember to save your data before flashing, and if you're not sure, don't flash!!
