Ok, so I have a Droid X2, and the Droid X and Droid 1 as predecessors. I have never had any major problems, and the few that I couldn't get around I had SBF via RSD for. To my knowledge, there is no form of SBF for the Acer A500 (yet). So heres the issue:
I may have either flashed an update without the proper files to go before it; or I have have forgotton to wipe something. Nonetheless, my A500 wouldn't boot. When I did some research, I went to this site:
{http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=2127076#post2127076}
because it seemed in my eyes to have the most pertinent information. I got the update.zip to install and my A500 booted again! However, I could not get to stop two because my insternal SD card was wiped somehow and when I get to the main screen, do the circular unlock, the launcer, and many other programs repeatedly force close, so much so that I cannot do ANYTHING. How would you approach this, and is there a way for me to get into CWM. I have a recent nandroid backup that what 100% functional, and I would hope the MD5 sums would still match....
Any help/advice is greatly appreciated!

The top link provides a way to install via Acer recovery the new 3.1 OS, but to my understanding its unrootable for now, is that still the case?
the update zip is uploadable even without root.
just like the original OTA firmware. Try it, many other users got back their pads with this one, as you can see in internal posts of the thread

I totally get what you're saying. What I meant is that if I did the update, it completed successfully, that I would then NOT be able to root the device. Obviously that is a better option that a brick! But I'm trying to find out if I can recover to the most updated version that has been rooted.
Maybe I'm wrong and a root program has been made for 3.1?
hey mate, U quite a little lazy readinf threads titles uh...
take a look at this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138228
pick up the 1.3 version. it will root your "definitely final" version of os, this update U have just uploaded IS the last one available, and it's eligible of any further OTA update...

I work 70+ hours a week, I'm certainly not lazy. But that is why I ask these questions hoping for someone to give me a little short cut to the answer. Between work and sleep I have 2.75 free hours a day and do NOT want to spend them reading a forum where its a lot of bs banter in between the actual info. I'm sure there are a lot of people out there that just don't read, but I truly don't have the time.
Also, this is one of the biggest forums for Android out there. Theres no way I could ever read the HUNDREDS of threads just on this device alone....
I do appreaciate your help!!!
I'll give a final report when I have a chance to do it!
This method did NOT work. When I boot into recovery, it always goes to the screen with the triangle and the android. I never see a progress bar....does this matter?
I also tried your other suggestion of "wipe device without recovery" and that didnt work as well.
I know its not a lost cause since it boots all the way up. But every app force closes so I have NO access
YOU have to do things in proper steps !!! ( lack of sleep will do that to you ! )
1/ grab the file from that thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1159443
( remember to unzip it to get update.zip file and placed on your card and flash using normal recovery.... not renaming ! )... assuming you don't have CWM at the moment.
2/ grab the "iconiaroot 1.3" file to root your device ( as CWM and Acer Recovery Installer required root access )
3/ grab the Acer Recovery Installer and proceed to install CWM to your device...
after all those are done... work your way with CWM ( to access CWM ... you need to keep holding the buttons (Power & Volume down) until you see 4 lines of text...and not let go before that !! )
remember to wipe cache & factory reset ( both before and after to ensure 110% cleaned to avoid errors and FC )
good luck !!

So I responded to this last night, but somehow it disappeared?? Anyways, thank you for your effort to help me resolve this, but if you look at my initial post, there's no way your description and process would work. First of all, the update above I tried (like I mentioned) and it did NOT work. Also from my description I mentioned that when the tablet does boot, it boots to the home screen (stock green) but, all the important applications, the launcer included, force close so rapidly and repeatedly that I can't do ANYTHING. Thus, I would obviously NOT be able to install any programs, let alone root the device.
Thus the name of this thread....

And obviously you are suffering from lack of sleep !!
The update.zip ( after extraction ) from that thread can be flash either normal recovery or CWM recovery.
and here's the added tool to wipe without a recovery:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1132760
Therefore... what's stopping you ??
and please re-read my steps above.. after flashing... you will need to root and re-flash CWM using ( Acer Recovery Installer)
maybe you're not clearly looking at the picture...
there are 2 recoveries ( normal Acer stock recovery and CWM recovery )... DO NOT mistake Acer's stock recovery for the program called Acer Recovery Installer.
what Acer recovery Installer does is install CWM recovery for you and also backup/restore your original Acer recovery.
and you cannot use the program until you are rooted ( step #2 above )
FYI ... each recovery boot differently !!
Stock recovery -->> hold Power & volume down ( closest to the power button ) until some text appear 2-3 lines )
CWM recovery invoke differently.... ( hold Power & Volume down until you get 4 lines of text... do not let go anytime earlier then that )
~~~
extract that update.zip file ( my guess is this is where you went wrong... you didn't extract ? )
when you extract... make sure only the update.zip is put on your MicroSD card ( format FAT32 ).... no sub-folder...etc
Then insert into device and use the stock recovery method above.
if all else fail... get a different microSD card !!
then follow steps #2 and #3 from my previous post .
again... what's stopping you ??
I did the steps that E.B. recommended initially (directions followed religiously). Then I did what you posted (twice now,again, religiously - and yes I know how to, and properly extracted the update. !). Furthermore, I also tried a totally different SD card. 8gb pny VS 16gb San disk.
Hi,
I try to downgrade my current A500 on HC 3.2 to 3.01 with any success.
I follow to tutorial based on "Vache" tips available at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1276227
I have done all the step, but when i launch PBJ20upgrade.exe as administrator, it ask me to plug again my iconia, it display the current installed version and version who will be replace, click on "Next" button and... progress bar doesn't move.. the iconia switch off (black screen). I have try many times and always the same result.
My current configuration is :
Kernel : 2.6.36.3+ - build : Acer_A500_7.006.01_COM_GEN1
My computer is on Windows 7 64bits.
Any ideas ?
Have a nice XDA Christmas.
Method 1 can take up to 10 minutes or longer to get action. Perhaps you didn't wait long enough.
Try Method 2. It's even easier.
Not sure if it matters, but set your USB Debugging to on. Settings/Applications/development
USB Debugging is set to on.
When you said "Method 1 can take up to 10 minutes or longer to get action." it's mean before seing the progress bar moving ?
In any case i will check method 2 but just a little bit afraid with the " gives errors and crashes but you only need it to root and install CWM"
One small question, with STEP 2, it will replace the current HC 3.2.1 by an unstable 3.01.
Let imagine after the procedure (root + CWM) i would like to put a ROM STOCK as my iconia was delivered, i think it's possible no (and where to find it because i have no img of my current version because not rooted).
And if i do it (install rom stock) it will be updated to HC 3.2.1 with OTA no ? Root and CWM will be lost again in this case ?
Thx for reply.
No Problem. Remember, sometime, systems will reboot. And sometimes, you have to wait. I cannot tell you that this is happening with your case. But, it is best to wait some time.
Both methods, I believe, will give you an unstable version of 3.0
Yes, both methods, will replace the current operating system. But, between errors, it will allow you to run the iconia root, and run the acer recovery. I don't think anybody has failed to do this, except for idiots who can't follow instructions.
I would suggest you download these, and put them to SD before starting the procedure. It saves having to get them from the net. Also, go ahead and download a rom you want to try. Might as well do all things at the same time.
True, basically, you will be without a stable recovery. Which is why, after you install Acer recovery, and install the recovery part, it is necessary to make a backup of the current system. Better an unstable one, than no system at all
Then, do your boot to recovery, system off, hold vol- and pwr till you see the text in the top left corner, then release.
Nav is by the vol - and +. Pwr to select an option.
Wipe;
1. User data
2. Cache Partition
3. Go to Advanced, wipe delvak cache
Go back to previous screen, and select Install From Zip, choose zip to install, and select your rom
Wait 10 minutes or so.
Now, when the rom boots, and it will, if you get several error mesages, then, you should reboot to recovery, only this time, goto mounts, and format the partitions. Usually, you don't have to do this. But, sometimes, traces of the opld rom remain behind. But, I think you will be ok with the previous procedures.
And, you're a good boy, as you ask questions before you do things
Hi again,
Sorry but i have a stupid question. Based on solution 2 for downgrading (by using a SD card) if it's so simple why we don't use it to flash any ROM like Thor or Tabonnay ? just by placing the "update.zip" file on the SD card and boot on recovery stock ROM.
I understand that "rooting" a tablets allow to have full access on it (all partition) but why it's necessary to replace recovery tools by CWM ?
Sorry for this stupid questions but i love to understand what i'am doing.
Hi again, so i have done the downgrade with step 2 but have some issue.
V 3.0.1 is installed and iconia root 1.3 too
concerning "itsmagic" where to get it (when i should put adb push itsmagic /data/local)
Second, for the second part of tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1126364, i need to type some bash command on the tablets, but how to ?
Easier to download Acer Recovery from the http Market, and install it on your tab. Then flash the Thor Recovery.
To make a long story short, it won't work.
Basically, the OTA updates have a special script to run, also, they update the bootloader of the tab, which of course is more or less off limits to use poor people Not to mention the updates are "officially signed" by acer, to allow this method. And I am just guessing on this, but probably pretty close.
Anybody else have anything to add?
I suppose, a lot of time could be invested in creating a custom rom using this method, but it seems more simple to use the "recovery" method.
So it's mean that i don't need CWM and itsmagic but just "Acer recovery" ? i can cancel this part on STEP 2 ? :
5. then install CWM from thor's site (there you can find the latest version) or use Acer Recovery Installer from the Market, or look at the original thread here
6. Boot into CWM and flash whatever ROM you like!
The main problem with the market, i can connect but each time i use the tab keyboard i get an error message as describe on the unstable HC 3.01, is there a way to have an APK version (i can upload it on my microSD card).
Thx a lot.
Yeah, that keyboard is a killer and causes a lot of issues. I heard where if you mess around with the keyboard settings (a lot), it will actually settle down and work with few errors (but looks bad)
Yes, skip the adb stuff
Use your computer to access the android market web site. Search for acer recovery
Download, put it on your sd for your tab, and install it using any file manager app. Then start the app, and install the Thor Recovery. You can get Thors recent recovery later, so it's not necessary right now.
Acer recovery is a tool that makes it easy for people who do not know how to use adb.
If you can't get it done that way, then you'll have to use adb.
The directories specified in the commands, are the locations they will push the files to. The img to the sd, and the it's magic to /data/local
Never used it myself, so I am not so sure where you are supposed to place the files to begin with. I would guess in the same directory as adb.
Thx for help, when you said "Then start the app, and install the Thor Recovery", Thor Recovery is included on the A.R.I apk file if i understand well but not the last version.
2) I donwload a ROM like TABOONAY or THOR on my microSD card
3) Just after, i reboot on recovery mode by using A.R.I
4) From CWM i select the image located on my microSD card to flash my tablet
right ?
Ok, AFTER, you run the acer recovery, install, start app, and install the recovery. Should be the only choice you have
After it does it's thing. Then power off. Then, hold Vol - then PWR button, until you see text in the upper left corner of the tab, then release both buttons.
It will boot to the recovery menu.
Now, it's ok to copy the rom you want to use to the sd before doing all this. No problem.
With Taboonay, I would look at the procedure, as I believe you have to have 2.1 installed first, before upgrading to 2.2. (not sure why he decided to do it that way. Seems like a pain in the neck. I used to run 2.0 for awhile.
Harkon, is also a nice smooth rom.
Thor's V14 is also good (a500 only)
Then, very important. When you boot to recovery, go ahead and make a recovery image of your current rom (yeah, so it's unstable). Always most important to do this, as sometimes, a flash can go bad. Not often, but, better to have a recovery image to go back to, even if it's unstable.
Next, do your 3 wipes. No, not the toilet
1. User data
2. Cach partition
3. Go to Advanced, then dalvek cache.
After it's done, then, you can go back to the main menu, and select Install zip from SD
Then select your rom.
It takes awhile, so have a beer
And ... MAKE SURE you have at least 60% charge on your tablet!!! Before doing things.
People forget, and,,,, it ain't pretty...when your tab shuts down in the middle of a flash.
Nice, totaly clear for me right now. Many thx to you
And to finish, 3 last question (next beer will be paid by me of course )
1) If right now, at my current step (only donwgrade done to 3.0.1 at this moment) i do a factory reset on me main menu of my tablet, what version i will have ? Current unstable version or my previous HC 3.2.1 ?
2) When you said "Ok, AFTER, you run the acer recovery, install, start app, and install the recovery." by install the recovery you mean CWM provide on the A.R.I, there is a special menu on ARI to install it or it will be installed automatically during ARI APK installation ?
3) When you speak about "and select Install zip from SD" the ROM should be on the internal memory of the tablet or on the external (microSD card) ?
One thing that i don't understand yet is the internal structure of the partition on the tablet. As i understand, for the moment i just made a downgrade from HC 3.2.1 to 3.0.1, but we have the possibility to do a factory reset, so i think when we do that, the iconia will restore an img file or iso file from a specific partition.
So if i understand, on my current state, if i do a factory reset as usually, the HC 3.2.1 will be replaced no ?
In any case, thx a lot for time spend by you to explain me all this... this is the Russian POWER
1. Do not do a factory reset. Honestly, I do not know what will happen at this point.
2. The Acer recovery, comes with Thor's recovery program. I think, that is the only one that comes with it. Technically, you can use it to flash roms, but, I advise using the recovery built into the tab afterwards. Usually, this program will go away after flashing a rom.
3. Always in the "root" of the SD (the first file you see when you look at your sd with a file manager).
4. If you're in Moscow, I will take that free beer
Not sure exactly what will happen when you do a "factory reset" I would suspect, the same OS your device came with, but I really don't know. Never had to do it. And, I see a lot of issues when other people try it.
so, today i have installed Rom Stock, Thor and Taboonay... all those has been tested and at the end Taboonay has win (Thor is pretty good but the fact that tab is detected as ASUS is not so good for me).
Many many many thanks to you Moscow Desire for you help concerning this, all is ok for me right now and more clear.
last question, if i want to update current version of CWM (provided by ARI) how to do it ?
I have download "update-recovery-thor2002ro-rev1.3.4.zip" i think i should use CWM itself (on recovery mode) to update it ? right ?
Have a nice christmas !!!!!
Good work. Glad things worked out for you!
I've been lazy, and haven't upgraded my recovery, but I believe you just place the Thorupdate.zip on the SD like you did with Taboonay, and boot to recovery, and flash just like your rom. But really, I haven't done this yet. Maybe this weekend.
Shouldn't be any need to do wipes.
Also, if you want to run a different Kernel on Taboonay, Then you need only to wipe Delvik cache before flashing it.
Merry X-Mas to you as well, but here, we celebrate New Years.
I know it for christman, i work sometime in Russia (near Moscow). Normally for you it's hollydays since yesterday, very lucky people in Russia.
Happy new year to all XDA members !!!!
FYI - if you do a Factory Reset with the unstable 3.01 rom installed, it puts the CURRENT OS back on, this being unstable 3.01. You have COMPLETELY replaced the other OS. This will happen whether you are running a custom OS, or official OS.
You can only have one OS on your tab at a time, unless you do the dual boot but that opens up a whhole new can of worms...
thanks to everybody, as i described in another post i bricker my iconia trying to downgrade from ics to 3.
i've read a couple of posts, i've found tolls than could give me achance to recover but i don't know my serial number.
so first question i ask is: opening a ticket with acer assistance they show as serial number this:
XEH6LEN0021140E7131500
i tried to take apart the last 15 characters and add a 0 but no luck.
is there any other solution ? is there a chance to get somewhere an update.zip signed ?
sorry if i asked stupid questions but i'm a noob and quite desperate.
i know i did something stupoid and i won't get upset if someone reminds me this ....
thanks to anyone that reads, cheers and sorry for bad english
Things are looking grim if we cant get your cpuid
I take it you don't have a backup with the uid.txt file somwhere on your computer maybe????
The 11 digit number is a small hope as it suggests you're on the HC Bootloader in which case yes you are able to recover using an update.zip
go to this link and follow METHOD 2
the update zip you have to d/l is UNSTABLE and tricky to use
but all you need it for is to ROOT (with Iconia Root from the market),
and install CWM (with ACER Recovery Installer also from the market.)
Once you have CWM make a backup and get your uid from the text file in the backup folder -
make a copy of it AND KEEP IT SOMEWHERE SAFE!!!!
if you have problems booting the UNSTABLE rom you have to do a hard reset (see below)
You may also need a rom to flash seeing you dont have a backup to restore
you can give hard reset method a try on your bricked tab first- dont think it will work - but u never know.
1) Turn off your tablet,
2) Have the Rotation lock on your left;
3) Press Vol+ (which is next to rotation lock) and power on simultaneously
4) As soon as the tablet vibrates you can release the power button and
you should start to switch rotation lock left and right till you see
Erasing Userdata...
Erasing Cache...
Vol+ is still pressed;
5) The tablet starts to format
6) Your tablet will be as clean as it can be.
Good Luck
many many thanks for your help, i don't know how to thank you enough.
i tried the hard reset, but i still get the boot verified failed ...
the update.zip file in method 2 is the one i used to brick the tablet.
i tried again, the message i get after the flash is:
Not legal !!!!!!! abort
Warning: The blob package is not official ~ Abort!
followed by the red Boot verified failed.
maybe i could try another one, but i don't know where to get it.
i tried to read how to extract one from an entire rom but it's a bit tricky and my antivirus reports the tool as a trojan.
i'll try to look around, then i think i have to send to assistance.
thank again !
could you please tell me what to do ? i downloaded the file root3.2.1 from timmydean but i don't know what file to use, since it's not a zip file but there are many files and folders in it.
....first take that update,zip off your external_sd card...you dont wanna be fixing the problem and then borking it again cos the update.zip is on there
timmydeans should be a zip not sure where u got it
ive attached a pic of the folders in my timmydeans v4 should be similar,
theres a readme and pdf in there with all the instructions but basically
1. run test.cmd just click on it - you have yr tab connected to the pc
2. the window should say list of devices attached followed by yr CPUID
You HAVE to get this to show up the rest of the process wont work otherwise.
post back with what happens
again, thanks a lot.
i think there's no way to get the id.
if i attach the tablet with the red message it isn't recognised by the system.
if i do it using the paper clip it is recognised as ACER Usb boot recovery driver.
in USB deview, which column do i have to look at ?
meanwhile, i picked Acer_A500_0.000.00_1.013.01_EMEA_GEN1_1300336887417_befd43a1.zip
got and update.zip file from it, tried to use it, process started but after a while the android robot falls ...
just my input... might be wrong, but every tidbit helps.
In USB Deview, I believe you look for android.bootserial if it's the same as we run dmesg from ADB, Not sure but check it. Never ran USB Deview before.
Also, one of my russian colleagues said that everytime you connect the USB to the PC, windows keeps a record in the Windows/temp folder for the device ID. If I can find the PM in my mail, I'll post his info again. Theory is, you may be able to get it from temp, so don't clean your temp folder.
ok, under serial number column there is only the 11 digits, so no way.
i'll do some trys using zip files of official roms and trying to get an update.zip working, if i don't get results (as it'll probably happen) i'll give up and send it to acer assistance.
you were very very kind, thanks.
Yeah, I'll take over for awhile so you can take a break.
Keep in mind I'm bouncing back and forth between baby and Android.
Yeah, you're close to being fubarred if you don't have a UID and running ICS Bootloader (hacked version). But not totally.
INFO: I couldn't find the PM from my russian friend explaining how he found his in the Windows/temp folder, as some strange named temp file. Mainly because it was through ATG site, which is no longer there anymore.
Yeah, looking at your image, it seems to show your current UID under ICS. This is both good and bad.
Good, because you should be able to go to Civato's Bootloader thread, and convert it to SBK, then NVFlash a new ICS bootloader and recovery. Then install an ICS rom.
Bad, because that number will not work with a HC EUU, or even running the update.zip from the SD Card.
In theory, the SBK generated is the same for both HC and ICS UID. At least in my case. One would think Vach could reverse the process to generate a HC UID from the SBK. In theory.
Yeah, flashing bootloader the manual way can be a bit confusing. It involves setting your tab to APX mode. Press and hold the pinhole reset, and press and hold PWR. Hold PWR for 3sec, release. Then release the pinhole 1 sec later. This puts the tab in APX mode. Display will be black, but PWR button is on.
Check this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1522384
Download the package and extract to a folder on your C drive.
Then go to Vache's site (link in the thread) and convert this number from the image you gave.
11405915515 and generate an SBK number
Connect your tab in APX mode (you should see widows show some connection when you do this about download or apx mode) if not, you will need drivers. You can always check device manager for APX mode when connected.
Run the file you downloaded as in the thread instructions. Do this through a CMD window (command window). Usually you can hold SHIFT and right mouse click and select open CMD window here.
Paste the SBK when asked (right mouse click on the curser)
Hit enter.
If it works, you get a PASS when finished.
If not, it will tell you SBK not good.
It's worth a shot anyhow.
Now I'll be gone for a couple hours. Baby needs Park in the buggy.
many thanks.
i tried but no luck, i receive a USB write error.
i tried for the second time to open a ticket at acer assistance.
first time they said they needed more info.
this time they suggested me to hard reset.
i'll try for the third time, it's annoyin i have to send the tablet and wait for i don't know how long to get it back and how much i'll pay for this (maybe 50 euros ....).
thanks for everything and have fun with your baby !
My colleague brought his stock A500 to me in a bricked condition last week.
I need a way to restore it. If I try to do a wipe it will say bootloader error if i try the recovery the droid falls down with the red sign with the exclamation mark.
This tablet has never been rooted, my colleague is not in to such things, it's lived its life with ordinary acer otas and the occational very young human (5 year old) trial wich it has survived.
He has installed all the OTAs he ever got on the tablet and this is in Sweden so it would probably be a 4.0.3 acer stock on it now.
I'm guessing it has died during a OTA or something. if i turn it on it will sit at the acer logo indefinitly.
I Bricked my A500 during a rooting atempt resulting in me needed to flash a stock rom to get it working again, but i cant find the thread i read to un-brick my A500.
Please Help!
we're assuming the tab is full stock and currently on ICS...
and we're assuming he never tried to 'fix' his tab by flashing one thing or another...
the bootloader error worries me...what exactly does it say...
Yes the wipes are really important!! and not being able to use the button method to do so is concerning...
what happens with the Over The Air (OTA) updates is its just that...an update...it leaves all your settings/data intact. When you OTA from one build to another, like Gingerbread 3.0 to Honeycomb 3.1/2 and then to ICS 4.0 - you drag all your apps and settings with you and of course some things that work with 3.2 will not work under ICS....fjor instance, lots of folk had trouble with wifi disconnects, once they got to ICS - or they had apps force closing and other 'glitches'. This is why everyone tells you to do the wipes - as this fixes these things! In the case of stock ICS my gmail would f/c all the time no matter how many times I wiped/formatted....So for a smooth running tab - flash a custom rom!!!!!!
But getting back to you...
From that link i gave you...download the 3.1_Full.zip....its decrypted so just extract it and get the "update.zip" from it..
This "update.zip" is not an incremental "update" but the full stock rom....
once installed you'll be on GB you will need to root it with iconia root and then use acer recovery installer to flash cwm....(get these from the playstore)
do a backup or adb devices so you can get your CPUID....this is important...if anything goes wrong at any stage this is the only thing that will get you unbricked....see the cpuid link in my sig for more on this, please take the time to read it, even if it doesnt make much sense to you, read it anyway....
AFTER you have retrieved your cpuid, you can nvflash the patched bootloader/recovery pkg which means you are able to flash ICS/JB custom roms
they cannot be flashed via cwm like normal...you must use nvFlash to do it....
OR
take the OTA route to ICS...this takes a bit of time...I did it last week and it was a good 6-7 hours to go from GB to ICS
there are pre-rooted stock roms if you wanna stay stock see civato's stock rom thread for that here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1633907
I am in a similar situation. Push the power button and it goes to a screen with white acer on black and stays there. Totally stock ICS, no root. I tried the update.zip thing and after automatically rebooting it says "Boot verified failed...". I don't have my cpuid, or have installed previously CWM or anything like that. I can get into APX mode. This guy here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1751978 could only get into APX with no cpuid as well, but i don't understand all of the ubuntuu and command line stuff. I would love for someone to be able to walk a dummy like me through this mess. Thanks for any help.
if u got boot verified fail error you need nvFlash to repair that....as u know, with nvflash you need yr cpuid....wot about usbdeview? if you've never plugged yr tab into yr PC - then it won't work and the ONLY other way is Linux....
might be best to start yr own thread with a descriptive title, not just a help I'm bricked no uid, thread there are hundreds of those....the more effort u put into the title the more likely you will attract the attention of someone who can actually help...and remember you just don't need a bit of help but a blow by blow description of what to do and how....this will be very time consuming....at the very least get ubuntu installed, maybe just try a few things, anything to show you are capable of at least giving it a go yourself..
there are others who would like 2 know how to do this as well...having a specific thread of its own would be great
good luck
yup...usbdeview.zip see the bottom of the OP in the cpuid guide in my sig
Right. Sorry, I didn't notice that before. Thanks again for your direction.
"To install one of these roms you will need a custom recovery and to get that you must flash the patched bootloader FIRSt - once its patched you can install a recovery any old way you like"
Looking at that guide, would you please tell me what a custom recovery is and how to get one? Btw, I don't plan to do a custom ROM yet, I just want to get the damn thing working first. Was thinking of using the HC EUUs from the firmware files list. However there are two files, a .rar and a .exe listed. Which do i use?
The .rar EUU is for an A500, the .exe is for the A501, which do you have?
I've got the a500. However, I decided to go with a custom ICS rom after all. I managed to put a new bootloader and custom recovery on using the a500apx flash tool. That part went fine. I flashed this rom:
Acer_AV041_A500_1.054.00_WW_GEN1-FULL-ROOT (original odex)
and that appeared to go well according to twrp, but after rebooting, it just shows the bootloader again and stops there. Not sure what i did wrong.
I renamed the rom update.zip. Should i not have done that?
well congrats for getting thru the flash process with no probs!!!
as far as renaming to update.zip that was not such a good move...hopefully things havent been screwed up too much
just go back into recovery and do a FULL wipe/format
then to flash use the option "install from zip file" not sure where that is in TWRP but it will have one
Okay. I will reflash the rom after completely wiping again. Thanks.
On a different note, why do roms require particular bootloaders?
Also different, how do you like your SGS3? If i can manage to fix this thing, perhaps I'll root my phone...
The stock ICS BL is encrypted - more or less - the only way to 'flash' a recovery or rom is to have the "key" that "unlocks" - it more or less - if you dont use the right key then the OS will not boot - the 'key' is based on your cpuid which is why everyone is forever telling you to save it somewhere safe....
I have a case for it now, and its gr8 - I havent installed a rom on it yet...the forums over there are jampacked and I have no idea what I'm doing, lol - its the first android device I've had that I've left stock for so long...but it does what I want...the camera is awesome -burst mode is the bomb - BUT do I think it was worth the money???? Still on the fence about that one.....
Ouch. Sorry to read about running over your phone. That would kill me. I really like my SGS3. I think I'll look into rooting it just to be able to back it up and get rid of the bloatware. I did that on my Captivate and prior to today, thats all I've ever done modding wise to an android device.
So, I managed to get my tab up and running again. Yay! I reflashed the rom w/out changing the name and worked like a charm. Now If only I knew why this happened in the first place... Thanks for all your help.
I googled your error - the consensus from what I read is a corrupt OS due to running OTA updates...
Some had luck with rebooting. Others had to send it to Acer.
Did you run the update.zip? so what happens when you run the update.zip
Are you able to get into "apx mode"? If you can, hook up to your PC and see if your tab is recognised as an "apx device" - check "Hardware, Printers in win7"
Thats all I can suggest atm - if your tab does get into apx mode OK then you can find your cpuid by running Linux -
Maybe ask the guy if he's ever had the tab hooked up to his PC like to transfer files and stuff - get him to download "USBdeview" to his PC -
this will show every single device thats ever been connected to the PC and it will show the "cpuid"...
Even if we do get the uid theres no guarantee it will fix the bootloader error - but we may as well explore all the options we can....
dibb_nz said:
USBDeview will only work when you have previously plugged your tab into the PC WHILE you were running HC Rom and BL
1. If you haven't plugged your tab into this pc before, do so now, before you run the program. HC ROM/BL ONLY
1a. Run the exe and you will be presented with a window of all the USB devices you have ever plugged into your computer.
2. Click on "VendorID" column along the top to sort them
3. Look for the number "0502" under Vendor ID AND "3325" Product ID
4. In the serial number column will be a 15-digit number this is your device ID.
5. Write the number down and put a 0 in front of it and now you have your CPU ID!!!
Hi everyone.
Just repeating again - the model I have is A501 on stock 3.2.1 Honeycomb - a more USEFUL tablet with 3G and WIFI capabilities...One would think it would be a much more popular model, but the A501 doesn't have its own board on XDA; its merged with this board for the less practical A500. Basically, I have created this thread as I don't want to take any 'extra' risks in successfully installing ROOT with the CORRECT ROM with the most updated version of Android available for this tab, for example Jellybean...
Another A501 user, beny9 posted:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1745550
Following TimmyDean's method (thank you) I have now managed to install 3.2 Honeycomb A500 ROM with success after completing steps 1-15 inclusive from his README file. As you will know, I don't have 3G or GPS functionality, so I need a stock A501 ROM to install.
I have found:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878
Is my best bet to install Acer_A501_1.309.02_4.031.24_COM_GEN1 : http://cdn.a1.futuredial.com/Acer_A5...2_35b68c5d.zip from that above link, which will keep me on HC 3.2 but now, it will be the ROM for the A501? As it seems the only other NEWER Acer updates for ICS are A500 only...
Can someone link me the a fully detailed video or post on here on installing the ROM i mentioned above (if that's the best one to go with, given what I'm on now; A500 3.2 and still keeping root), or to install some other A501 ROM which is for at least Jellybean or ICS?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1828876
Per this link, shoukd i just use the update.zip (for the 3.2 HC A501 ROM) put it on the SD card then boot up holding POWER + VOL DOWN until the file auto-installs?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1099673
Before I can try the above, I also have trouble after i download the ROM's zip file when I try to unzip. I have downloaded the Acer Update Decrypter, but AVG antiVirus will not allow me to run the EVE file even as an administrator. What should i do?
Thanks
RoOSTA
Your best bet is to install a good 501 HC 3.2 and get on HC for your 501.
The files are available. What you'll probably want is a full HC Update rom for the 501. Note that some of these Acer roms are encrypted, so you'll need to decrypt it first. You can find the decrypting tool in the Themes and Apps forum, as a "Sticky". After decrypting, you can pull the update.zip out of it, and copy to Ext SD (do not extract, just pull the update file out). Boot the tab holding Vol- and PWR I believe. Might be Vol+ but I can't remember. This should force the tab to look for update.zip on your SD and install it.
I would use this one;
Acer_A501_1.309.02_4.031.24_COM_GEN1
After it installs, and you get it set up, you need to get Acer Update Enhancer from the Play Store. This will allow your tab to get the ICS OTA.
Keep in mind, there is only 1 official ICS OTA update for the 501, so don't expect more. It may do it in 2 steps though.
If you want root on ICS, there is really only 1 way to get true root and adb system remounts. And that's to flash the V8 unlocked ICS Bootloader, and flash an insecure boot.image. There's currently a small package that'll give you somewhat root, but it's a pain and really doesn't do a good job. So it's better to get the V8 and unsecure boot image. Might be a good idea to also install CWM Recovery at the same time.
Get the correct rom installed first, then check back if you need help.
Oh yeah, one more thing. When you are on HC 3.2, get your UID number and write it down somewhere. You need this as a safety precaution. There's a good sticky thread on how to do it. Pretty simple really.
Ugh. I have a pain in the A$$ version of AVG...even under advanced settings there was no disable options. Managed to figure it out to run the Acer Decrypter EXE and fix the image you have advised I should download and flash. Will give that a go now...
Thanks again!
Just to fill you in, this issue is solved.
1. Used TimmyDeans rollback V4 tool to a 500 rom
2. SD card was not recognized in CWM or Stock recovery. Was however recognized in the HC OS.
3. Formatted SD Card using Mini Tool formatting app. Format primary partition only to fat32 (defaults)
4. Decrypted and pulled update.zip from this 501 HC full update rom
Acer_A501_1.309.02_4.031.24_COM_GEN1
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1816560
5. Did OTA update to 3.2.1
6. No more OTA available, even after installing Acer Update Enhancment tool.
7. Downloaded and used Blackthund3rs Bootloader management app
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1622425
8.Downloaded V8 and CWM package, unzipped to the same folder as the tool
9. Ran the 500NVFlashapx app.
10. After completion, booted to CWM recovery, wiped and formatted, and install Moscow Desire's RaptorX almost stock ICS rom.
Works as advertised.
Yep. All thanks to MD's patience and assistance throughout these steps..
Acer A501 OS refreshment
Moscow Desire said:
Your best bet is to install a good 501 HC 3.2 and get on HC for your 501.
The files are available. What you'll probably want is a full HC Update rom for the 501. Note that some of these Acer roms are encrypted, so you'll need to decrypt it first. You can find the decrypting tool in the Themes and Apps forum, as a "Sticky". After decrypting, you can pull the update.zip out of it, and copy to Ext SD (do not extract, just pull the update file out). Boot the tab holding Vol- and PWR I believe. Might be Vol+ but I can't remember. This should force the tab to look for update.zip on your SD and install it.
I would use this one;
Acer_A501_1.309.02_4.031.24_COM_GEN1
After it installs, and you get it set up, you need to get Acer Update Enhancer from the Play Store. This will allow your tab to get the ICS OTA.
Keep in mind, there is only 1 official ICS OTA update for the 501, so don't expect more. It may do it in 2 steps though.
If you want root on ICS, there is really only 1 way to get true root and adb system remounts. And that's to flash the V8 unlocked ICS Bootloader, and flash an insecure boot.image. There's currently a small package that'll give you somewhat root, but it's a pain and really doesn't do a good job. So it's better to get the V8 and unsecure boot image. Might be a good idea to also install CWM Recovery at the same time.
Hi MD,
I have Acer Iconia A501 tablet. My tablet suddenly showed andriod logo with exclamation mark when it was being used. Upon looking at your posts, I found the resolution which I tried. I am not expert in this all, but I tried running your ROM "41-124-01-A500-update" from one of your posts which was actually meant for A500. This resolved the issue successfully and tablet was up and running.
Then further I found full ROM for A501 as mentioned below and thought that I should try the ROM meant for the model of my tablet.
I successfully decrypted the ROM that you mentioned "Acer_A501_1.309.02_4.031.24_COM_GEN1"
When I tried to update it with the mentioned ROM update.zip, it did updated it from SD card and passed android symbol with those gears running. However, when it restarted the tablet by itself, it showed ACER logo and then it showed "ANDROID" (spelling in blue color) which kept on flikering slowly for long long time....for more than 30 minutes and did not moved further. Can you please let me know whats could be wrong?
I also tried ICS ROM, but that didn't worked (it failed). So after couple of trail and error, I moved back to A500 ROM update.zip which I knew that is installing successfully.
Can you please let me know what shall be done in case I want update.zip for A501? It will be highly appreciated if you can upload update.zip directly that I can use and that gets installed successfully.
Muk
Hey Muk, I can probably guess the ROM you installed doesn't do data wipes and such, so it caused an animation loop.
Try this one. It's an SD ROM, so it "should" wipe your Data, along with installing the ROM.
As you probably discovered, Acer has pretty much removed almost all tablet ROMs. I snagged a few the other day, then checked yesterday, and they removed all from their support site.
I would guess they are getting out of the tablet business.
Also, they shut down their OTA Update servers for a few months now.
Hi MD,
Thanks for your super fast response. I am downloading the ROM for A501 from the link provided by me. I will update you if it works in my tab.
I forgot to mention you about one message that I received once tablet is restarted. So, once ROM for A501 from SD card has performed its job successfully....that is that android symbol with gears in its tummy is successfully finished and tablet restarts. It shows "Acer" (spelling logo) and then after it gets stuck at "android" (spelling logo). Between these two, it displays two lines messages on top left corner for 2-3 seconds that the "blob is illegal - abort" and then gets stuck at "android" (spelling logo). I think this might be useful for you to identify something.
Another thing about wiping out the data, in starting when we press volume down and power button, it does display message about SD card (still not not sure about whether it might be wiping out the data or not....I believe you might be correct that it might not be wiping out the data).
Another thing, that I found in my backup is that when I purchased this tab (A501), I downloaded HoneyComb 3.2 Kernel Source Code from the Acer support site. Is this something that you can do magic with and provide me with update.zip? Please let me know....if you can do magic with this, then let me know how shall I share it with you.
Trouble installing ROM for A501
Hi MD,
Thanks for your super fast response.
I tried downloading the ROM for A501 from the link provided by you. It downloaded it from the cloud, but at the very end it displayed message "Decryption Error". Still I tried extracting "update.zip" from the zip file, but it displayed message that the archive is corrupt and file is corrupt. Can you please check at your end and provide me with fresh link or directly with update.zip? For your reference I have attached screenshots of errors.
Trouble installing ROM for A501
Hi MD,
Please read my earlier message and then read this one.
Thanks a lot....your answer about my first problem resolved everything.... (your answer was "that the ROM that I am trying to install is not clearing the data"...I verified that the ROM is clearing the cache, but not the user data. I can confidently say that you correctly identified the issue as when the ROM installation was stuck at "android"....I switched off my tablet and tried installing again the old ROM for A500 which I knew that it is working and instead of asking me to configure the tablet (i.e. time zone, date & time setup, etc.) after installation, it simply logged in and started my tablet as usual....that means that when I was trying to install ROM for A501, it was not clearing user data and was then hanging).
Now coming back to the link that you sent me in previous message, I was able to download the zip file successfully in the second attempt. I extracted the update.zip and it did not work. It showed the similar problem of getting stuck at "android". However, with your great answer that you gave me, I cleared the user data and cache manually by pressing vol up + power buttons simultaneously and then when "acer" symbol displays, releasing only power button and turning on and off the lock button. This cleared user data and cache. After that, since update.zip (that you provided) was already in my SD card, it installed the ROM and tablet works perfectly. Thanks a lot....:good:
One question, when it asked me about the zone, it had only few countries like US, UK, etc. I couldn't find Australia...is it because this ROM not for Australia? I understand that this is not an issue, but if you find anything for Australia, do send me.
Another thing, is this HoneyComb 3.2? Will 3G and GPS work in this one?
Do let me know if you can do some magic with HoneyComb 3.2 kernel source code that I have as mentioned earlier.
Muk
I'm mobile right now, so can't go into big detail.
In your settings, about tablet, you can always find info on which specific OS you have. If you indeed have an A501 and the settings tells you that your tablet is a 501, then your 3g and GPS should function.
The only 2 differences between an A500 and an A501 is of course 3g. Also, they use different GPS radios. So you can install 500 Roms on a 501 and vice versa. Just the above 2 items won't work. Also, I believe I gave you a 3.2.x ROM. Getting it to ICS 4.0.4 may be a problem.
I revived my own 501 last night by putting the motherboard in the oven, but now it doesn't read my ext SD card, so I may be stuck on 3.2. Eh, no problem.
Hi MD,
Apologies for very long replies. Wanted to convey the message in detail how I did it so that it might help someone else like me.
Thanks for your response. I have tested it, 3G and GPS is working fine. I believe, before my tab encountered this problem, it was having version 4 which should be ICS. At that stage I didn't had any problem with my tab...I believe it was there for long time.
If you have good known ROM for ICS, please forward me I can try on my tab. If it doesn't work, then will re-install the Honeycomb that you sent earlier.
One more question....when I try to update the system from "About Tablet" in Settings, why it displays message the the "network is poor" and advices to move to better coverage? Though, I am just besides my WiFi modem and coverage is almost 100%.
And @jonnybrave: If you are referring to the ROM that I successfully installed which was sent by MD earlier, then it does not need any decryption. So you can use the link sent by MD earlier in this post. And if you are referring to the KernelSourceCode that I mentioned earleir, then it needs some kind of processing in Linux machine and then you can create some image.....this is was I know about it....sorry not an andrion guru. Please let me know what you are referring to.
You get the message as do all 500/501 owners (it can change depending on version of Rom).
Acer no longer gives updates to any of their devices (regardless of age). These are otherwise known as OTA Updates. So they have closed their update servers, so now we get some "message" that absolutely means nothing.
I suppose Acer is getting out of the Android business and no longer supports anything. Nice job Acer.
As for updating to ICS (or any other version), I have a few update files. Generally though, the update files must be matched to the current version of your tablet. Sometimes you can run a "full update" and it will work.
The problem, is these tablets are getting old, and the nand memory can go bad. Running an update can cause a variety of problems such as "Stuck in APX" mode, stuck at bootloader, stuck at boot animation. Then we have to go back to the EUUS file, or an old SD ROM file. So you run the risk of doing things all over again, and the risk that it just won't work again. (I spent a couple hours last night, and was almost ready to throw it in the garbage)
For example, I'm pretty much stuck at 3.0.x or 3.2.x. I've already disassembled the tablet and put the mainboard in the oven, just to get it back to life! And after numerous attempts to get ICS on it, I've pretty much given up before it hard bricks again. In fact, I can't get a 3.2.x EUUS to work on it, so it is stuck at the 3.0.x ATT EUUS. Eh, it's my little girls tab, so as long as it gets You Tube and browser, it's pretty much ok.
Hi MD,
I am in the same boat as you...lol...This tablet is mostly used by my daughter and as long as it is solving my daughter's purpose, we are happy
I was just curious about that message as to why that is happenning, but after your clarification, it is clear to me as to why it is happenning.
My tablet is working as normal and everything is working fine...so we are happy with what we have.
Thanks a lot!
