I was very pleased to read this-
http://www.gsmarena.com/200000_samsung_glaxy_s_phones_sold_in_south_korea_in_10_days-news-1786.php
Considering the fact that stocks sell off like hot scones in the UK and there are even shortages, and the fact that the device is selling well in the U.S even before carrier-based versions started selling, i see a bright future for the Galaxy S platform.
If in south korea alone it sold 200,000 , and in the UK Clove, Expansys and Handtec had severe shortages untill several days ago, i'm guessing it already sold over 300-350K worldwide.
Again, even before carriers around the world started marketing it.
Now i want to see what happens after carriers around the world start selling it, if these kinds of numbers will continue to flow in, i think it's close to impossible that samsung won't support it for a prolonged period.
Share your 2 cents, i'm having great expectations right now.

^ Yeah, I lol at that one.
But OP, your right. This is Samsung's all out effort to gain marketshare in the smartphone area. They are #2 when it comes to feature phones (dumb phones). However, in smartphone market, they are #4 or 5. In fact, last quarter they LOST market share. Analysts have projected that in a few years, the majority of phones sold will be smartphones, so it is imperative for Samsung to gain market share and win over customers. You can not do that with products that are unsupported. I bet they got a wake up call when HTC came out of no where and gained market share quicker then Samsung did. In fact HTC (which is very small company compared to Samsung), has a greater market share than the big ol Samsung. They know for a fact that with increased relations with developers, that their handsets have gained sales. Samsung created an open source distribution website where source codes for most of their products have been released since April of this year. So that is a good positive step in the right direction. Also, we all know Samsung makes great hardware, however their software side has been less stellar. Its beginning to be changed as more money and resources are pouring into the software side.(Bada, new R&D center in India devoted to software, new emphasis by corporate to focus more money in software etc).
I hope we are right.
As far as I can see, Samsung is winning customers over HTC right now. I am one of those, and I spotted many others in the forums.
IMO the point is that HTC's success has been largely undeserved, but rather based on the efforts of people here on XDA; on the contrary, it looks like they did everything they could to make people run away screaming. Despite all the work that has been done, even developers on XDA have never found a way to get a performance from, say, the Touch HD that could at least be called acceptable, if you look at the specs. Marketing a device as the "ultimate multimedia experience" and then selling it without proper drivers, is just pure BS. And this incredible problem affected an entire range of products for at least two years.
So, I would say, HTC should be paying a much higher price than they are, for their behaviour... we'll see in the next few months. I know I sound harsh but I seriously hope they lose it. Samsung FTW
OP needs to change his topic to something less misleading. When i first glance your "bright spot" made me thought that the new phones have some defect in the screen.
I thought your post was to say that samsung sold many phones with defective "bright spots" on their screens.

And now can someone please translate AndroHero's post for me? i'm having trouble trying to discern what language is that.
Anyways, now that samsung is selling masses of their flagship phone, they have to be completely retarded to not support it properly. It would be equevilant to commiting suicide.
Also, it sold a lot on their "home court", if samsung will let even koreans down, their cellular department is going to take a major hit.

Hello,
Here is a little article about samsung vs apple, there is a nice section about production lines.
It's a Korean article transleted into English.
[too bad I'm new and can't post a link] To those still interested by the article, you can google search "askakorean apple vs samsung" first article!
It's maybe a bit out of context, but since you were talking about shortages.
If someone would be nice enough to post the link so it's easier for everybody

Interesting to read someones opinion, but that's all it is. My other half is Korean, and she, like I work in the electronics industry and we're both intimately aware of how Korean giants like Samsung operate, the key element in the Galaxy S isnt rapid turn around, its a change in corporate policy towards the design of the phone, by involving hundreds of potential users in the development stages.
I also disagree with his premise that the iPhone 4 is a 'great' product. I've had a play with an iPhone 4 and I think it suffers from Form over Function. It's actually a little uncomfortable in the hand. It may be made from glass and steel and look great, but such hard materials with squared off edges and profiles doesn't sit right in your hand.
The objects we most commonly hold in our hands are cups/mugs, pens and computer mice. They're rounded and softened, ok household mugs are ceramic from a practical materials aspect, but even a travel mug has a rubberized grip.
I just don't get the hysteria over the IP4, when I look at it I do see a photogenic object, but I also see a design fail.
Leaving the comfortability issue aside, i'm bothered by the durability aspect.
Using superhardened glass may be good against scratches, but without a shock absorbing frame of some sort, the harder the galss- the more prone to shattering it will be, and harder glass shatters more catastrophically.
"regular" hardness glass usually gets cracks or little shattered points.
Superhardened galss- it's "all or nothing". Either nothing hapeens, or it shatters completely.
Deciding to put the glass ON the frame instead of IN the frame (like previous iPhones) was a much bigger design flaw than the less-round corners IMO.
I'm hearing a lott of buzz about samsung using mostly plastic, and how "inappropreate" it is for a super high-end device, but from a pratical viewpoint-
It's durable, it's cheap and easy to replace it's comfortable, and it doesn't block reception as much as more expensive materials.
Indeed, my BlackBerry is plastic, and that's never been an issue.
Federal court is forcing samsung to handover all galaxy prototypes to apple

Apples sickens me. Douchebags that buy cheap hardware and labor from asia and sells it for insane prices (buying them on contract is better but in sweden we often just want to buy the phone). And clames they developed and done it all by them self.
Even ideas are taken from chines developers.
All modern 'smart' phones look similar to a degree. I just think crApple are wasting their own time and money with this and I hope the US courts get fed up quickly and file this in the bin.

Too late for what? They've surpassed Microsoft as the #1 tech company, I don't really see what's too late.
More practically, these little corporate games have been going on for so long over so little that I really couldn't care less either way. If Apple and Samsung are happy to chum the bottom feeders, good for them. I believe the saying that best describes the situation is "**** rolls downhill and then nothing happens". No loss here.
Funny thing Apple has already or in the process of signing a multi million contract with Samsung to mass produce all of their screens...lol newbcakes then they file a lawsuit. Steve_o and there newbcake law team must have forgot about the screen deal haha.

I remember reading something about this over on Gizmodo, I think their stock price surpassed Microsoft, however I attempted to find the story, I was not able to find it.
I agree with you, Mircosoft is a much larger company. Apple may have beaten them in the Phone and MP3 market but they still rain supreme in the PC OS market.
I believe what is being referred to is Apple's Market Capitalization, which is basically share price * number of shares.
More info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Market_capitalization
And indeed it seems to be the case that their market cap is now greater than Microsoft's, as Apple shares have experienced explosive growth since the recovery of the stock market a couple of years ago.
Seriously is apple really that scared?
I really hope this doesn't delay the Australian release.
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-...samsung-from-selling-tablet-in-australia.html
They must be that scared
you never heard anything from apple until just recently when the android phones and tablets are really starting to challenge apple, they now see android and the companies that make android phones/tabs as a threat and they cant develop iOS fast enough to stay ahead so are now doing all they can to slow the pace of the android train down.
lets be honest iOS has been the same since launch and it really needs a overhaul.
Seriously?! I used to respect apple with there innovation and cutting edge technology but since they began all these lawsuits and injunctions I have totally lost all respect for them and their "big bully boy" attitude towards its competition. Shame on Apple! They must really fear the 10.1 TAB... Maybe alienating themselves from Samsung who made a fair bit of Apple's components wasn't such a good idea....
For now, Apple has successfully blocked the sale of the galaxy tab 10.1 in Australia till the lawsuit is settled. who know how long that is. I really hope samsung blocks the ipad3!
I don't think Apple is scared, the iPad is way too dominate at this point, I just think they're greedy assholes.

I wouldn't be too sure. Second quarter numbers show that Apple's share of tablets shipped in the second quarter dropped from 96% in 2010 to just over 60% in 2011. Android's market share increased from 2.9% to over 30%.
If that isn't scary to Apple, then they're fools.

Also, no one in Australia drinks Fosters beer because a) it's horrible and no one in their right mind would drink it and b) it's only sold internationally and you can't actually buy it inside Australia unless you're at an airport or something.

Good for Samsung. TBH, they should just kiss & make up. It would benefit if both sides were to do that in the long run.
The tab is now delayed thanks to Apple. I cant believe they are complaining about "touch and feel" and "finger gestures". The only finger gesture Samsung should give apple is....
http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2011/08/samsung-officially-postpones-galaxy-tab-10-1-launch-event/
It's great, a mate of mine has an iPad 2 and I've got my GT10.1 and we can't see any similarities between either of them when we compare em. They're two entirely different beasts for different consumers.
He had a play around with my Tab and was like "dude, this is so different from what I'm used to with the iPad".
I have an iMac and MBP at home. So an iPhone and load would make alot of media swapping easier. But honestly, Android allows me to design the device interface better for how I need it for quick access on the go.
Apple may find themselves on the other side of those law suits when they finally decide to overhaul their UI. Serious, their iOS5 redesign of notifications has been in Android since 1.0! Watch out Apple.... your doing exactly what you are accusing others of doing to you. All you need is to be the Microsoft of the 2000's .... you recall how you dealt with them right? Next you'll be developing an Android iTunes App and an Android iPhone/iPad.
Tread lightly with all your lawsuits. I came to Apple for home computing because my needs are DJ, remix, and simplicity and great one stop support between the two environments. Don't make me regret trusting you by worrying about only the competition and not your customers

The Gadget Show is dire. It is an appalling TV programme. It lasts about 45 minutes (excluding the much better produced adverts) and you would be lucky to find 5 minutes worthy of a tech show.
They do 'challenges' which are purely for entertainment - but fail even to do that.
As said earlier, they are very Apple centric.
The only bit of the show that is any good is the web only reviews, and even then they tend to be very superficial. Then there is the one minute of adverts before the review starts, only to get under 2 minutes of contect.

Let’s pretend that you’re a blogger. You’re given the chance to review new, hot hardware from a major company. All that’s required is that you participate in some tasks, but these tasks would fit into your coverage so you agree. In return you get to be one of the first to go hands-on with devices and give your opinion on them. Sounds like a good deal? Well that’s what a couple of Indian participants in Samsung’s Mob!ler program thought too, until Samsung threatened to leave them stranded in Berlin, Germany.
First let’s start with the facts. Programs such as Mob!lers (or Mobilers, for my sanity) are in place by many companies. In fact, I’ve even participated in one, for a company called STI, where I’ve done reviews of Kia and Mazda cars. But there’s one factor that differentiates programs such as STI from Mobilers – Only one of them expects you to become a shill for the company.
The story that follows is one of those that’s going to be hard to believe. We’ve done our very best to verify the facts, and we’ve heard the same tale from multiple sources and the end result has been the same in each case. That said, let’s go back in time a few weeks....

Your judging the whole company based on the actions of one local branch of Samsung that was based in India.

Maybe some of you should have read the entire article and the one specifically about "Jeff" that followed. It wasn't "just wear a t-shirt", it was them being given the choice of being there as a reporter or a promoter. As bloggers, they stated they would be there in the capacity of reporters. Upon arrival, they were told they would be required to be in a Samsung uniform and work in a booth as a promoter. You have ZERO credibility as a journalist if you're known to have been actively promoting a product. Did you read this?
In the invitation email, Jeff reports that he was asked whether he’d like to attend as a reporter or as a promoter. He was insistent that he would only accept the offer if he was allowed to do so as a reporter.

Until I hear otherwise, I'll take Samsung at their word that this was a huge misunderstanding on the part of the local Sammy reps at the event. Big companies don't pull nonsense like that on journalists. That tends to bite you in the arse when every news site picks up the story.

Knowing how Samsung operate these events, no guarantees would have (or should have) been given before they left India as to if they would have been reporters or promoters, Samsung split these roles 50/50 for all Mobilers in attendance and don't decide before everyone arrives who is doing what.
Obviously I cannot comment on what was actually said in this instance or if either party is telling the truth, I can only tell you from what I have experienced myself.
(to any journalists looking at this! THE GUARDIAN! - do not use what I am saying without permission and certainly not if its incomplete or out of context - I do not know the facts of this case and I am merely commenting on my Experience as a Mob!ler which does not match in anyway what has gone on here)
Well, it is all hearsay at this point. Samsung did apparently acknowledge a misunderstanding. With them being in the media spotlight, I'm sure they're gonna do all they can to make this go away.
Who do they think they are? Im too good to wear a samsung T-Shirt? What did they expect to be treated like royalty? LOL
Anyways... Yes the people that worked for samsung at that indian branch may have done some very stupid things and said some stupid remarks and made samsung look bad. But samsung is not at fault I can guarantee you if the big boys at samsung heard this was going on they would of flew them home straight away.

It's tough these days to really qualify people... "bloggers" for instance. That could be someone who is published regularly at CNET or someone who has a Wordpress blog with 3 subscribers. So, I guess I have to lump them all together and give them the benefit of the doubt.
If you're promoting a product, your credibility is zilch. There's a particular photography review site that was purchased by a large company that sells cameras and lenses. From that point forward, all their reviews are glowing. Because they're selling the products, too. They have zero credibility. I go there for the spec lists and disregard everything else.
So, these 2 dudes wanted to maintain journalistic credibility and I respect that. Say you were this "Jeff". A small-time blogger in India, and you pumped out some really high quality work that caught the eye of some major player like CNET, Verge, etc. They consider adding your stuff to their site. Oops- look, there's pictures of Jeff in a Samsung uniform working a show booth. Dude's a corporate shill. We can't take his work as unbiased. Next!
Like I said, this is all hearsay. And I'm just speculating and presuming the 2 articles were accurate. But IF they're true, maintaining credibility is vital in journalism.
While I agree with Mr. Crane's viewpoint (above), I must say that it is Samsung India that is at fault.
Also, I'd wear the t-shirt and do a bit of promotion work if Samsung is giving it all away for free. If I were a journalist, it would raise my online presence (by being at a special event and covering it myself). Then, after I have my hands on with the product (sometime after the launch), I'd give my full and honest opinion about it.
For example, I absolutely ADORE the S3. It's the best smartphone ever made. Period. BUT I do wish they'd given us more RAM. Is 1.2-1.5 gb of RAM too much to ask? I really don't want crApple beating us on this. Nothing is a match for the Note 2 but it's a tad too big for my taste.
