I bought a NC for my Mom and I'm looking for best option for making default font and/or icons large for older eyes.
I already own a NC running 'stock' CM7.1 stable, and tried an app called 'Nook Odds and Ends', which allows changing LCD density. Seems to basically do the trick, but not sure if there are better options...on my Cappy phone running CM9/ICS, there's a specific setting for font size that I can't seem to find in my NC build of CM7.
TIA.

I think you're on the right track with setting screen density. On CM7, I use 220 or 240. All the interface elements are nice and big across all apps.
You could use an alternative launcher such as "Go Launcher ex" which allows custom size fonts and text. Works nice for myself.

Thanks for the [email protected], what app do you use? The app 'Nook odds and ends' only toggles certain values (160 default, 180, 200, 250, 270 or 300), cannot fine tune to something between 200-250.
I tried Go launcher ex when I first got my NC a few months ago since was what I was using on my phone at the time...but it didn't seem sized right for the tablet...perhaps it's been optimized for tablets since then.

My current favorite is LCD Resolution (free). It has a slider, but will also let you type in values. Heed the warning about not applying on boot until you've tested.
If you're running B&N firmware, the boot message is blacked out, but the check box is visible. It's the little check box below the Apply button.
Thank you. I'll be installing either CM7 or Mirage I think. I'm assuming neither of those are B&N firmware since both those are Cyanogen based.

ADW Ex also allows you to increase both icon and text size. Works fine on both CMod GB and ICS.

Agreed. I use ADW EX. I like the icon resize and hide labels option. It worked well on. CM7 and now on CM9.

Mirage is based on CM7.2 RC0 with updates that have become available since the freeze applied, so it *is* CM7. Arguably, it's the "latest" nightly, though I understand the last "official" 7.1 nightly was 253. In any case, it has some important fixes applied, as well as some nice tweaks. I thought an official CM 7.2 was supposed to see the light of day, but I'm not sure of the status on that one.
A lot of people swear by the CM 7.1 stable releases, but I generally had the best luck (and fun) with nightlies, and I found Mirage very solid to use. My personal preference was for a dpi setting of 220.
You are correct that neither are B&N firmware. B&N's latest for the NC is 1.4.1, which can be rooted and used successfully if you are concerned about B&N content.
Thanks for the good info.
I've only used CM7 stable release but I'm curious about Mirage since seems lots of people like it best...I've hacked the heck out of my Captivate SGS, just haven't had the time until now to do more to my NC.

1. There is no stock CM7.
2. CM based ROMs are good. CM7 is strongly recommended. Others reported loving MIUI which I've never tried.
3. Forget about HC.
OK so no HC
CM7 options:
1-MiRaGe
2-Phiremod 7.1
3-CyanogenMod 7
also
as far as i could tell the normal OC it to 1.1~1.3Ghz any special things i need to know?
Use plain old CM7 it is by far the best and you don't have to wait for the themer to update his/her rom.

My suggestions:
If you want an e-reader focused experience and plan to buy subscriptions and content from B&N, root their 1.4.1 ROM. You get a nice reader with the ability to jump over the Walled Garden walls.
If you want an Android tablet that can be used for reading books, go with Cyanogenmod 7.1. I run the nightlies myself, and have few issues.
Just be aware that the Android Nook app is nowhere near the same thing as the B&N reader. If you want that "B&N Experience", the B&N ROM is the way to go. If you don't care about B&N stuff, there's no advantage to their ROM, other than maybe the free-form launcher.
I just wish the Android launchers weren't all so grid focused. They make my tablet look like an oversized phone.
Ignore this post.
so... CM7 nightly build, use stock kernel? or is there something better?
Just use the stock kernel. I boot CM7 stable (7.1.0 currently) from SDcard using Verygreen's 1.3. I can't recall the last time I ran the stock firmware. Only reason I can see to use stock is if you subscribe to any magazines, or use their children's books. That is the beauty of running off SCcard, you can always switch back to the stock if you want to.

Dals overclock kernel is already included in the 7.1 stable. So there isn't any other kernels you can use anyway.

I'd put in a vote for MiRaGe.
Nightlies haven't been nightlies for a while due to build problems and CM9 preparations. This means that latest nightly doesn't benefit from latest fixes including those for SOD which also can affect the stable build.
MiRaGe has those fixes in plus a modular kernel which frees up more memory does seem to speed things up. It is a bit smaller as it has some stuff stripped out.
I'm happy with that build. It seems very stable and fast. I'll probably stay with these till CM9 matures a bit more.
moving to mirage from cm7
did anyone use V6 SuperCharger 9 rc4 with it?
Definitely MiRaGe.
No question about it.
I did CM7 for a couple of weeks and then MiRaGe for the past couple of weeks. No comparison. MiRaGe is much faster, much more stable, better battery life. Without a doubt, it's the winner of the two.
Haven't tried Phiremod. I have no reason to try something else.

+1 MiRaGe. If you'd drop by MiRaGe Thread's OP and review the changelog, you'll see there have been lots of improvements to the build including a modular kernel that is based off dalingrin's which is the base for overclocking and has the SOD patch as well. Aside from this, the signal icon/wifi bug on the latest nightly (253) is fixed as well. There's also an optional script called v6 supercharger that adds up to the total speed and ultimately reduces lags on your NC. Performance has been superb and I've been using it for almost a month. mrg666 also syncs to CM Repo if he finds anything new to add he updates it (like nightlies) and it's definitely worth it.
Tapatalkin' it from my rooted NookColor running CM7 MiRaGe [KANG] [7.2 RC] overclocked @ 1.2 GHz
Yup. Right now Mirage is the way to go. Combine it with the V6 Supercharger and you get a steady nice and mostly lagfree experience with quite everything you throw at it.
what settings to use with V6 RC9?
I've endured that ROM for a long time but i've finally had it. My swype doesn't work, SD card barely works, data/wifi, FCs, everything is going to hell in a handbasket.
Please recommend me of a solid rom i can install in 10 minutes and titanium-restore my apps.

Is video working on nightly yet? YouTube and Netflix??
CM7 - original 7.0 stable release.
Everything works, except for deep sleep, but if you charge it every night, like you would a cell phone, it is no problem.
(I don't use Netflix, but I remember seeing threads about it for CM7.)

My family has 3 Nooks.
I reverted First 2 Nooks to B&N 1.2 stock before installing MIUI. Wth full wype and reset. Registered for warranty purposes, immediately shut down. Full wype again then installed MIUI. Used Titanium to restore.
First 2 have been on MIUI with Swype Beta, for months now, without any problems other than market on 1.11.4 which is now fixed on the latest release. I started on 1.9, then 1.11.4 now 2.2.3. Swype Beta works great, (Must first uninstall standard Swype and register with Swype for the Beta. It is an easy signup on their website, the trick is finding the beta page). Titanium works great.
The 3rd is on B&N 1.4.1 rooted with Manualy nooter and Dalingrin OC Kernel. Everything seems to be great, except Swype will not run on B&N Stock roms. Titanium Backup does not work on B&N 1.4.1 rooted. Will try The CM 9 nightlies for fun in the next few weeks.
I do recall having early tiny problems with MIUI, but the usual wipes and installs seemed to settle everything. When first booting on MIUI there can be frustrating stages as you use the Button Saviour and Keyboards to get past the first SuperUser requests.
Use zMooth for the virtual buttons on the MIUI roms. Locate the zMooth Swype area to bottom left, reduce height to minimum, and change color to transparent grey. Also reduced width to about 1/2 inch.
Also use
Titanium Backup Pro to convert Button Saviour to a user app, then remove it completely. (Also to save and restore apps after clean installs)
Titanium works on MIUI and on B&N Nook
GoLauncher EX (free) Great for standardizing the UI for all my Android devices
Samba file share is great!!
Root Explorer Pro !! and
ADB Wireless essential and cool.
Nook Tweaks from Dalingrin to set up the Audio levels and undervoltages (essential)
SetCPU to OC to 1.2 Ghz on all 3 Nooks working well. (Needs Dalingrin's Kernel on the B&N 1.4.1) Dalingrin is a wizard.
Use Kindle, Nook and Aldiko for reading books.
Adobe PDF reader working well. Adobe Air and Flash also
GAPS working well
Opera Mobile for web (mostly)because of reflow ability, plus Firefox and Dolphin sometimes.
Rom Manager Premium
FolderSync is great for syncing with Drop box and other cloud backups.
Roboform Evernote and Twitter all work great
Facebook Messenger works very well but Facebook app itself is "force closing".
Pandora, Pulse, Quickpick all working well.
BirdieSync - sync with ThunderBird and Lightning (These guys are responsive) they come out with a new version of BirdieSync within days/hours of a new release of Thunderbird and have never tried to sting me for more money after years of use. (I have no connection with the company, just happy with them)
PowerAmp working great.
Youtube working,
XDA Premium working
Wish I could contribute / help with lower level testing!!!! Too much to learn.
Hope this helps.

Best CM7 rom right now. Lean, mean and fast.
I don't why someone would recommend CM7 7.0 since from what I remember it was pretty slow compared to the mirage's kang build
I use the Kang build too. It is great! I will eventually move to cm9 once all the kinks are out.

Hi everybody! I have some "newbie" questions about CyanogenMod 9...
1. Is it really faster compared to stock ICS? I haven't overclocked the processor and my main problem with ICS, is that the default launcher has a little stuttering some times and it's not absolutely smooth. In CyanogenMod9, the "Trebuchet" launcher is almost at the same level in terms of "movement flow".
I had Nova launcher previously and I'm thinking of installing it again on CyanogenMod 9...will this be a right move?
2. What else is better than the stock ICS there? Ι already use that marvelous power widget inside the notification bar, but, except some similar workflow tweaks, I can't see anything else...any feature list compared to the stock ICS 4.0.4?
3. Why the torch toggle-in-notification is disabled in settings? (the pre-installed torch seem to work perfectly)
4. Screen brightness gets increased when there is a lot of light around, but It doesn't decrease its brightness when I go in a dark room again...Am I doing something wrong? (I haven't touched those sensor filters etc...)
Can you please help me? I'm not a developer and I'm mostly concerned about a smooth and fast experience.
1. Make a nandroid and try it out yourself.
There is no right move. Do whatever it is you want. Your phone won't explode if you install the "wrong" launcher.
2. Take a look at the popular roms in the dev section and repeat #1. Or look at bedalus's benchmarks if you're really that apprehensive.
3. probably hasn't had the bugs worked out.
4. again, maybe a bug. After you flash a couple of roms I'm sure you'll see that you can get #3 and #4 working.
More doing and less thinking. As I said, you have a nandroid to fall back on.

Thanks for the response!
1. If you read carefully my post (sorry for my bad English), you will understand that I already have tried CM9 v6.0 and that was the reason I wanted to know more, because I don't see any performance improvement over stock ICS 4.0.4 on my Nexus S. Am I wrong? There must be some objective reasons except my judgement.
2. I was talking specifically about CM9 features.
3. I figured that with the torch...it's probably not ready yet. I can't find any post about the brightness though (there are so many options there which I don't fully understand and brightness never works as it should).
4. I don't want to flash other roms...I have already flashed Wildestpixel's roms and I didn't see an obvious performance difference too...
For trebuchet if you check (or unchecked I forget) the join with apps setting it makes the launcher just as smooth as gingerbread
Well, I switched from Bugless Beast today to latest CM9 nightly (15.4, not the KalimochoAz version posted on here).
Haven't tried CM9 for a while and it surprised me, speed wise and stuff integrated in it. I'm a fan of stockish ROM's, that's why I used BB since ICS came out. What made me stay is:
- integration of BLN & Voodoo sound, meaning I don't need to run those 2 apps in BG (saves memory ofcourse, I'm a sucker for optimization)
- BigMem is quite noticeable, also RAM free right after clean flash is about 200MB (vs 140MB on AOKP, which is the ****tiest, meaning when I use the apps I have in BG, there was constant launcher restart - low on RAM)
- seems like internal storage speed is faster, I noticed level loading on Where's my water game is perhaps the same as on GB (was waay slower when ICS came out)
- nice UI optional goodies in the ROM but still without AOKP "lets **** everything in" bloat (battery %, power key camera shutter, custom autobrightness levels, T9 dialer). Wanted those on BB, where they were out of question, since BB is more stockish.
- no weird governors, OC or voltages, just ondemand/cfq as on stock, don't use deep idle
So for me, it's a good sweet spot between stock and custom ROM.*
*Disclaimer:
I've used BB for months & AOKP for 2 weeks, both on SimpleKernel, which is basically stock with added BLN&Voodoo. I don't fiddle around with OC/Governors. Those are my observations and I don't intend to debate "why you didn't use "xxkernal v.9302".

I'm using CM9. Last rom I tried was AOKP build 32, but I went back to CM9.
Dear everyone here,
I'm a newbie and bit of a n00b here.
My goal: I have Nook Color and want to put a stable ROM on it. It would be great if it can be stable, fast and Jelly Bean (CM10)!
I know the last official stable CM ROM is 7.2, Gingerbread. Didn't try it on Nook, yet.
I was following this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1941247 and tried CM10 nighty (ver. 11. Dec 2012). This was my first Nook Color ROM ever. Everything I've tried was ok, but it's very slow and I can't really use it. Are there any ROMs that are faster, with no leg?
So, please guys, who have tried different ROMs, please suggest me a good working (stable) and fast (no lag). CM10 would be great, if not please feel free to suggest (with a link provided).
Otherwise, I would try CM 7.2, which is a "phone" OS, not that suitable for tablets.
Thanks a lot!
you have to remember that the hardware you have only has a stock, single core 800mhz processor. you wont get any smoother than the latest nightly. i suggest that you do a clean flash of the latest nightly and then go to settings>performance>processor and set your cpu governor to performance and set the max frequency to 1100mhz
you have to remember that this is hardware from late 2010, two year old hardware, it performes well, but it cant compete with the nexus devices.

Hello and thanks for your kind reply!
I've done what you suggested: CPU was already set to 1GHz in CM10, I've set it to 1100MHz and changed "on demand" to "performance". Not faster. Or not fast enough. I din't download another CM10 nightly since the one I'm using is just 3 days old.
I'm fully aware Nook Color is outdated in today's fast digital world. However, I'm disappointed it can't go any smoother since this is really to slow and even frustrating (waiting, click, waiting). What's the point of using CM10 if one can not really use it? CM10 nightly's general respond to basic operations (menus, settings) has a lag. Do the others report the same? What with the other CM10 ROMs, like Paranoid Android?
Would it be much better if I would switch to CM7.2 instead of CM10?
I also have ZTE Blade 2010. phone (600MHz stock single core CPU, OC to 800MHz) that works great on CM 7.2. Smooth and stable.
Once again, I didn't try CM7.2 for Nook Color, maybe it would work just as smooth as on Blade.
For the record, Blade and Nook Color almost have the same AnTuTu bench score (Nook is a bit better).
Please note I was using (testing) simple apps on Nook (not games or anything "heavy"):
- Opera Mini browser, News reading apps, ES File Explorer, etc -- works fine.
- Google Maps also works okay, no lag.
- YouTube is slow, it takes ages to swap from portrait to landscape when Nook is rotated. When finally starts playing it goes smooth even in HD.
- Chrome is a killer! Takes ages to load and is not usable.
All these apps, besides Chrome (requires Android 4) work just fine on my ancient ZTE Blade! :good:
I ask all of this since I saw posts on XDA regarding ICS and JB on NC saying "I'm totally thrilled with this version. Haven't had a bug at all, bluetooth functionality is flawless, and it's even faster than the stock software." I'd like the same!
Any hints now? Again, thanks a lot!

My NC CM10 ROM is installed on EEMC, not SD. Should I forget about speed and smoothness on ANY CM9 and CM10 and go back to a phone OS on a tablet, CM7.2, as suggested?
Should I consider ICS instead JB hoping to get a better result? CM9 instead of CM10?

I would forget about cm9, and cm10 is still in the works(but making progress). So if your looking for the most stable and smooth ROM, I would go with MiRaGe cm7.2, at least until cm10 has got a stable ROM. Those guys have tweeked that mirage ROM to the point of perfection.lol

Thank you very much! I'll do that.

Just try the various ones and see what suits your needs the best. Everyone has differing opinions of the various ROMs based on their particular hardware, setups, expectations, experience and the particular apps used.
Only you can decide. It is easy to give them all a try. CM10 and Paranoid Android will perform similarly since PA is based on CM10.. so you don;t have to try both to get a performance feel.
This was in the CM 10 general thread:

Thanks to several people on these forums I now have the Nook color running CM10 fairly responsively, to the point where it doesn't feel all that different to the Nexus7. Huge kudos to the devs on that!
I hope these steps can help others get theirs in the same state. I am using EMMC boot. YMMV so do a backup first.
Firstly, I was having trouble with FC and really bad performance, I traced the issue to something installed on the SDcard (didn't happen if booting with SDcard removed), so I wiped the SDcard, problem fixed.
When installing via clockworkmod (3.2.0.1), I wiped data (aka factory reset), wiped cache partition, (under advanced) wiped dalvik cache. I did not do fix permissions but some suggest that also helped them, pretty sure you need to do that after install though and I've not gotten around to a reboot yet)
1. Settings->performance->interactive
This seems to be the biggest improvement overall. I am wildly speculating that the nook is too laggy at adjusting clock speed in 'on demand' and that is where a fair bit of the sluggishness comes from. I did run with 'Performance' for a while and that is better, and interstingly I didn't find the battery life too bad at all really, so that could be an option for some (I do turn off wifi when not using and that helps heaps with battery).
2. Settings->Performance->I/O scheduler->BFQ (YMMV but worth playing with)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22134559&postcount=4
3. System Tuner app from the Play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ccc71.pmw
Tweaks->Sysctl->Recommended
OOM (scroll right past memory top line)->Presets->aggressive
I'm on the Nov13 build atm, not feeling like I need to try any later nightly but I might for interest.

It makes the nook run much faster and it has a much better user interface than CM 7
Also run the unofficial build that has a few tweaks that make the nook seem faster with GPU intensive tasks.
i still think the cm10 rom, while experimental, is still the best rom, cm7.2 is old software, it was good at the time, but android4. and 4.1 have alot of enhancements as far as speed, but try 7.2 and compare it. the only person that can tell you what the best rom is, is you.

Thank you, as always!
CM10 might be the best ROM on the paper, due to JB's enchantments over GB. However, this particular CM10 is just slow on NC. Basic use, like navigating through system options, settings, menus -- has a lag (w/o any apps). All the time, every time. I must say I didn't try last power settings your recommended on the previous page, since I gave a try to CM 7.2 (Mirage).
CM 7.2 makes NC responsive and fast. (It won't play HD videos in YouTube, only "normal", that's the only thing I noticed so far.)
Regarding CM10, I can give it a try once again if/when becomes faster. Do you think the power settings you gave me most recently would really boost it? I can flash it again. Or CM9 (ICS), I'm following that one as well. Until then, I don't think it's the matter of choice. After all, we all have the same HW here (even though two versions of NC have some differences, but not in speed).
Lastly, I'm a newbie and I can be very wrong.
I have tested all of them, also various nightlies. And although CM10 looks prettier and have better "menu" options (no need to mount sd card when connecting to PC for example), 7.2 is still the fastest rom on Nook Color.

The power settings definitely make a difference.. whether they would make it better for your use is something nly you can decide. Try them.

Thanks for your reply! Great you've tested more ROMs so you're experienced with different versions, their benefits and problems.
Right now, I'm on CM 7.2 (Mirage) and like it, fast and smooth enough.
- What do you think about HoneyComb (Android 3) for Nook? If not, than only HC theme would be enough.
- Have you tried power options settings regarding CM10, discussed in this thread?
- What other ROMs except CM 7.2 (Mirage) are worth of exploring? CM9 nightly?
- How about making a dual boot, so I would have a working CM 7.2 on one, and experimental ROMs on second boot (CM9, CM10). Is that safe? Should I be aware of possible issues? I've never done this, but I saw a thread on that here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17834691
Thanks a lot!
Also give v6 Supercharger a try for all ROMs. And, SD Speed Increase with a 2048 heap if you are on 7.2.

there were some tweaks in the thread (don't ask I cannot remember where...) that helped make CM10 very usable. Before that I was using MC-ROM...
For me it is a toss-up: either CM10-12/17/12 nightlie or stock B&N 1.4.3, rooted with ManualNooter 5.8.20.
I believe stock/MN is much faster and more reliable.
CM10 is feature rich, slighly slower, and the mail app is far better than stock B&N.
Hey, do both on emmc.
Install MN by following the instructions in the OP here.
Setup your NC for dual boot by following the instructions here.
And Install CM10 12/17/12 and the correct Gapps.
Personally, my NC has stock B&N 1.4.3 rooted with ManualNooter 5.8.20 on the alternate emmc partition and CM 10-nightlie 12/17/12 on primary. Then I can share the uSD card for data.

Did you see my post to you about CWM not being available on the CM10 thread? I think I have the solution for your problem.

So I recently downgraded to CM7 just because I wanted something more stable than the ICS/JB ROMs I'd been using. First thing I noticed is the horrible image quality throughout the system; stuff like gradients and the overscroll effect look like bad JPEGs.
The only thing I could think of was to enable 16-bit transparency in the CM settings and edit the build.prop to force GPU rendering, but neither of those did anything.
Anyone know what I could do to fix this or do I just need a better ROM?
Thanks in advance.

Understand that the CM roms are run through with a fine tooth comb before they are released ass a stable mod.
Try a diffrent launcher and see if that is still the case .

I definitely understand that. I was running CM10.1 for a while and it was the most stable (albeit unofficial) JB rom I'd had on here so far, so that's why I decided to switch to an official release - and everything's great, aside from the poor quality on gradients.

I noticed it from the beginning on ADW launcher and have since tried out ADW EX, Next Launcher, Smart Launcher, GO Launcher and a few more with no luck.

When i use to run cm7 on thee mytouch 3g there was a surface dithering option maybe that can help tho i did not see the diffrence.Do you have the inferrrior mt4g screen?
try one of thier nightly builds and if that is no diffrent then that is just how cm7 looks.

I've tried with and without surface dithering, still didn't make a difference. I remember looking when I first got this phone and it turned out that I got the good screen, plus I've flashed like 20 different ROMs and the graphics are always great. I actually just downloaded the latest nightly, so I'll give that a try.
Welp, flashing the latest nightly didn't help. I guess I'll just switch to a better ROM -_-
You might have luck by changing dpi.
