sd card reporting wrong filled space problem - Milestone 2 General

I have bought a new Sandisk 32 GB class 4 sd card
I formatted it as fat32 with the windows normal utility
the strange thing is that when I look at each single file in it with a file manager it shows its size correctly
however the system reports that the space occupied in the card is twice as much as what it really is.
For example I copied in it all of the content of my old 8 GB card, and after copying
the system said that the occupied space in the new card was 15 GB, which is impossible.
Could it be a formatting related problem?

Format it from the phone, from Settings -> Sd card or something like that.

Thanks for the help
anyway I fixed following a different method
Made a long format
then copied the data from the old card to the computer and then those into the new card
Before I copied directly between the cards after a quick format.
Now I see that any new file that I add occupies the right amount of space

Corrupt SD-Card 2 Gb

hello,
i copied in the morning some folders into sdcard via.. card reader...
then i went off with the card..
on the way.. i found out.. my sd card was empty somehow..
i softresetted, nothing fixed it..
when i refresh and view all files.. i see only strange characters and strange folder names..
and the sizes all together looks like 50 GB.
but in fact the pda tells me.. there is only 1,7 GB free instead 1,9 GB..
my sd card is 150x Adata 2 GB..
how can i fix this .. please help me out.. i dun wanna reformat this card, as i have important files on it.
yup you are the proud owner of a broken partition (very common with Fat16 and mobile devices)
from expereince ive found it happens alot with Fat16 and lots and lots of files (like those found in many of the better games or if you have alot loaded onto the card)
my recomendation is to get to a card reader and get some partition management software ( i like the trial version of Partition manager) and rebuild the partition on the card.
let me know how you go,
You can try downloading PC Inspector File Recovery, and running it on the card. It's freeware, and should work well given your card is formatted with an older filesystem.

You'll likely have to reformat your card, but at least you'll get your files back. If you do have to reformat, and your device supports FAT32, please format your card in FAT32 instead. It has a higher "tolerance" against this sort of failure.

mmmk with a broken partition you wont have alot of luck recovering file clusters, at the very least you will recover things that look like file.001, file.002, etc as most recovery programs will recover pure clusters regardless on data.
and yes Fat 32 is good but you will still get partition faults if you load too many files onto the card.

Wondering where my SD card space went to?

The other day I had put my SD card, (A-Data 16GB Class 10) into my windows 7 64 bit machine mainly because I could not fine my usb cable. Everything seemed to be fine, I had just upgraded from the stock 8GB card that cam with my Evo. After I placed the card back into my Evo I noticed that my nandroid folder was gone. I was luckily as I always try to keep backups on my computer so I was not that worried, note to anyone always keep nandroid back somewhere other than you SD card. Fast forward about two weeks, I downloaded a great little app DiskUsage https://market.android.com/details?id=com.google.android.diskusage&feature=search_result that I think I saw here on this forum a while back, to see where all of my SD space was going. Just going to the Storage space in CM7 was showing that there was 8 GB free when there was only 4 GB on the card. 8 + 4 = 12 and the card is 16 GB even with formatting I should not have lost 4 GB.
Quick note 16 GB card is not really 16 GB. I get tried of hearing people complain that their X GB card only shows 15.2 GB in this case. Do the math. 1 megabyte = 1024 Kilobytes and 1 gigabyte = 1024 megabytes roughly. So if you say 16,000 megabytes (what you think the sd card has) / 1024 (because computer space is built on 8 bits = 1 byte) = 15.625 GB of actual storage space.

Back to where I was, so I found this folder called Found.000 and had no clue what it was. This folder was taken up roughly 3.5 GB of space, and it was a hidden system folder as I later realized, not Andorid system, Windows system. You may ask where did it come from, well after a cup, or 4 of coffee I found that when dealing with Windows and you plug a SD card, for this case, into the computer and it says SD card not properly ejected do you want to look for errors, and you say yes and allow it to fix any error that it finds. Well this is the result, a folder name Found.000 with the files/folders that the Windows system attempted to restore but they are unreadable. I then put 2 and 2 together and found out that is was my nandroid folder that I was missing. So now what to do with it. Well this is where I got impatient. After reading that you should not remove this folder, and then reading that it did not matter, I decided to reformat the SD card. SD cards should be formatted with SD Formatter http://www.sdcard.org/consumers/formatter_3/ for better results with speed. I did reformat after backing up and then copy my files/folder back to the SD card and now have been running with no problems and all of my unused space free. Just thought that this might help other people in what seems to be a fight to keep your SD card cleaner.

storage confusion(memory)

im just a bit confused about the sd card in general,,my phone of astro file manager has like,,,phone>sdcard>externalsd...which is weird and i never know if im searching my phone or my sd card...
when i try and load things i have dragged on my pc desktop onto sdcard they ussualy then go into phone>sdcard>external sd and never just .... sd card
i was trying to load images into sketchbook mobile and i could only do so from the phones camera pictures where i now have to drag everything omn the desktop....why cant i make use of my 32gb external sd card in this regard?
where are the applications for augmenting tehe sd card memory or whatever not for just having aplication sent to sd card memory,
does the sd card just work like say,,an external usb hard drive for a computer except you can put some inatalled application on it,,,,,but nothing like media,,photos videos etc?
or is it just me?
cheers
Your phone aka tab is divided into parts
System arnd 2 gigs
SDCARD arnd 14 gigs
System works as space for system
Sd as your sd card - Flashing doesn't destroy data on this
And if you place another SD card then it is termed as external_sd
So primary storage for you phone is SD Which is its own space
PS : there is usb storage folder (in sd card directory) also which is for your pendrives, etc

there are a lot more partitions than the 2 you mentioned!
efs
system (~1GB)
data (~2GB)
hidden
...
as far as i remember the note has 8 or 9 partitions (all of them have to be
subtracted from the initial 16gig (unformated!! formated it will be significantly less) storage!
so from your 16gigs you should see around 11GB as free mem on '"sdcard"!
i can't tell exactly because i have the 32gb internal version. with it a little more than 25,5GB are shown as "total" available (not free) storage!
as mentioned above
the rom has 1gb partition
data/system has 2gb
rest is used for sd card purposes around about 11.8gb
the device sees the internal memory as sd memory, the external sd card is seen under /external_sd
the file mangers will automatically go directly to the internal storage when browsing
i understand that I get about 12 GB left from 16 internally but.....
what can I actually do with the external_sd?
I cant load jpeggs onto sketchbook mobile at the moment. Reaally annoying
Any reason as to why it wouldn't recognize files in the external_sd?
Also we were saying about partitins and other random folder in the phone SD and external sd? anyone got a referrl to which ones can be deleted and generally how to make the phone and external sd card more navigation friendly?
please this would be really helpful
external_sd is your physical micro sd card, you can do what you want with it, i personally have all my music and movies on there
what files are you putting on the card?

[Q] Recover Space on SD Card after Root

After rooting with TouchNooter 2.1.31, including re-formatting my SD Card, I find that I have only 75 megs available on a 2 G card. Running check disk shows a total of 75 megs with no bad sectors reported. Searching the forums indicates this is not an uncommon problem, but I didn't find anything specific to TouchNooter.
One solution suggested for other systems is to copy the files of the SD and then reformat. Is this the correct procedure for TouchNooter?
Another was offered at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1863222
but, that one has me a tad baffled as to how to find hboot on a NST (and, no, I'm not buying an iPhone).
Bear in mind chkdsk indicates the TOTAL space on the 2G SD is only 75 megs -- it does not show that the SD card is actually has 2G of total space. If it means anything, I used Win32DiskImager to write the .img file to my SD card when I first started the rooting process.
Thanks!
When you write the .img on the card, it creates a 75M partition on your card because it is the size of the image and the remaining space is unallocated, that is why it doesn't show up on windows explorer.
You have to use a partition manager to delete the 75M partition and create a new one with all the unallocated space.
I use MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition
Right click on the 75M partition->delete
Right click on the unallocated space ->create
Choose the settings you want for the partition, click OK
Then click apply
That worked exactly as advertised. I had copied all my files from my SD to a backup folder on my computer. Once I resized the partition on the SD card with MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition, I put it back in the NST which wanted to format the card. I reformatted, pulled the card, transferred my files back to the SD card and everything worked.
Thanks!

[Q] samsung class 10 64gb micro sdxc card folders reading as empty...

Hi all,
bought a samsung micro sdxc card from amazon... its the 64gb class 10 version here http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B009HPFUGI/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 received it and put loaded all the files from my 32gb card onto it and put it in my phone... all of a sudden the folders are all reading as empty and my card has 55gb on it (there was one file not in a folder that was read for some reason)... so put it in my laptop to see why they are empty or if they are and it turns out that a bunch of folders and files now had the u in place of the first letter of the folder/file name eg uovies, uooks, uusic etc... so I formatted the card using the phone and tried again... same thing... sigh... so formatted the card on laptop and tried again and this time only about half the folders appeared empty... soooo replaced the folders that were not being read and tried again this time more folders reading as empty... so I the replaced every folder individually and that took a while, checking every single time that the all the files had transferred into the new sdxc card... success... all files were there and so I put the card into my damn phone and ffs only the single file not in a folder was being read again... sigh...
to compound it sometimes the phone would say the card was damaged but I would mount it and it would read it was there fine... just nothing in the folders... I have read there are problems with these things and just wondering if anyone has found a fix yet... looking at returning it to amazon if I can not figure it out...
You could try changing the file system type, so for example if you're using fat32 you could try to format it in exFAT.
Sounds like a bad card or bad phone
For what it's worth, I've found out that the Samsung galaxy S4 will format your card to fat32. fat32 will only support files less than 4gig. The phone it's self will only support files in that range as well. Found that out after trying to share a few MKV type movies over 4 gig with some fellow S4 owners. Also the 64gig cards are defaulted to exfat, so no need to format. When I transferred my files from my exfat 32 gig card to my 64 gig card, all I did was copy all the folders to my computer and dragged them over to my new 64gig card and was easy as pie.

formatted it via phone and laptop... in the end I put folder by folder on the card and tried to see if it still worked... was going well till I got to a certain number of folders then the phone kept telling me that the card was damaged... getting a replacement from amazon now and will see how that goes... btw I dont have any files near 4gb... just loads of smaller files...
from my experience with 32 GB and 64 GB, both are corrupted regardless of they genuine or not.
i suggest you to go to 16 GB
