USB host like Tab 10.1? - Galaxy Tab General

I see that with a cable adapter, the Tab 10.1 can host USB (meaning you can plug common USB storage into it). Can the Tab 7 hardware do this?

Yes. there are good reasons to believe this, but the software is still work in progress.

With ICS, there will be USB host, the ICS roms in the dev section are showing a great deal of promise, so the short answer is; "Evenually, yes."

If developers still support us, we should be seeing it soon.
I've asked the same question on the ICS thread since the listed working features include USB host. However, not much people seem to actually have the adapter, so we don't have anyone who can test it.
I'd buy an adapter to try but if it doesn't work, I have no knowledge to help them make it work.

usb adapter
I have bought an adapter, it did not work. The tablet did not recognize the adapter or the usb stick. I waiting to find out there is driver which can be added or if there are any other options available.

Not according to the Acer website, they blame it on Android not being able to handle 3g dongle, but I bet someone on here will have that problem (if it exists) sorted in no time!!!
Check in the Development sub-forum. People are already working on 3G dongles.

[KERNEL][ICS-CM9 or JVU] USB Host mode (OTG) driver for SGS i9000 [BUILD 4]
This thread is a good read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1450298
So far its available for the i9000, Captivate, and the Nexus S.
He says this is what he needs to possibly port it to other devices -
The kernel source is avialable on github. It is either a kernel for gingerbread (>=2.6.35) or for ICS (>=3.0)
It also contains (or has links to) the initramfs and all the other files needed to create an update.
If creating the update is not straightforward I also need a script to do this for me
After the update is made I need someone with the device to test it for me. If the feedback is positive I'll build versions for that device too, whenever something is changed.
Discuss.

Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Nope, it just means that they've ported USB host(OTG) to other Galaxy S variants by use of a Linux 3.x.x kernel. Not the same as a 2.6.35.7 kernel, it won't just magically work for us, it'd have to be adapted. To except Epic specific things.
Aw okay I was way off that's for he insight

I think the hopes for some ICS action are so strong, and many of us don't understand what goes into porting and creating custom work. Let's be happy with what we have with the epic. I hear cm9 is coming along nicely, so what the hell more should we expect? Dual core LTE's are on the way, so enjoy cm9 when it gets here cause I remember when all of us were wondering if we'd even see gingerbread.

We are all normal, some of the devs on the otherhand are not but that's what makes em so good at what they do. I mearly meant for someone to put it into terms in which the "commonplace man" could understand because I wasn't getting it/ had the wrong thought.

There is also a build for stock JVU (Gingerbread). It is possible to port this to older ROMs too (like CM7, or pre-GB ROMs). Ask your favourite kernel developer to do this for you. I only plan to support the CM9 and the stock Gingerbread version.

It's USB On the Go.
USB OTG port can be used like SLAVE or HOST.
that means when you plug it to computer it's slave attached to computers' host usb port. that's how it is now.
but when you plug USB hard drive (or mouse ...) to your phone, it's HOST, so you can i.e. listen to the music from hard drive.
yes i think hardware of our x8 cannot support it

It's normal that nothing happens if it doesn't have support in kernel.
somebody who knows it, but really knows it, not just guessing like us, should tell us.
I hope it has OTG capable hardware, because I believe the same hardware is in the most of phones.
but as I said somebody who knows it should tell us

Samsung Galaxy Note USB Host OTG NTFS HDD

Hey guys i have been searching for answers on this 1 tho i cant quite find out if the samsung galaxy note can handle usb host otg with a samsung s2 external hdd ntfs
i have saw alot of threads saying it sorta worked in the past on galaxy s2 and tablets but nothing on wether the galexy note has been tested to work...i can guess it might work its just the ntfs support witch i think ppl have had working sum how but big question to find out is the galaxy note able to work with a usb self powered usb portable drive?
hope to hear some feedback on the topic and as always thanks in advance
Interested in this too, for people wanting to test, I found this thread which might have some clues on how to support external NTFS partitions using Usb On-The-Go. It worked for the Galaxy S II, perhaps support for the Note would be trivial.
I'm interested in whether external NTFS drives can be used, and whether 1080P mkv videos will playback properly, directly from the USB drive.

So you honestly expected a useful reply about video editing in a thread asking about external device support? Why not post a new topic instead which people who know about video editing would be more likely to see? People are perfectly friendly if you put things in the right places.
The SGS2 definitely supports external HDDs via an OTG adaptor, but afaik you'll need a rooted phone and the ntfs libs to get it to recognise an ntfs formatted drive. To do this you'll need a 3rd party kernel as per the link in the HOWTO that runaway64 posted, and a Note that doesn't have issues with 3rd party kernels (most don't, some develop display issues).
The note only supports externally powered HDDs though as it can't supply enough juice for USB-powered.

i have tryed plugin in my samsung s2 external usb powered hdd and it works as in the glaxy note seems to be powering the usb hdd fine but oviously i dont have my hdd formatted in fat32 due to poor file size limit 4gb,
all i need to do now if get the note to reconise the format ntfs but i cant figuire out where to start
seems to be the note has tablet advantages like this
Did someone try to connect multiple usb devices via usb hub to the Note?
Like a mouse and a keyboard, or a mouse and flash memory?
Is it possible?
