I am clueless. - EVO 4G General

Girlfriend has an EVO 4g, is that the same as just an EVO? Can I use koush touch recovery? I have been on vzw 3 years and haven't ever really toyed with this phone.
Edit: Downloaded koush's file and it plainly says supersonic.

It says it's compatible, but with anything that's new, you run into the risk of having problems. ClockworkMod and AmonRA are both trusted and working recoveries.

Using it on my rezound now. Works nice. Missing some Amon features, but I like it so far. Thanks for the input though.

Just a quick note on this - CWM is known not to wipe properly on the EVO 4G. It also has problems handling EXT partitions. The only completely trusted recovery on the EVO 4G is RA-supersonic.

ya nothing against the devs of CWM but i have had more messed up flashes with it and whether that is my fault or not i have had better results with amonRa just my 2 cents from personal experience i've heard it works great still tho

Yeah. I just saw a post over in the Nova launcher thread where a guy was trying to wipe and found that CWM wasn't wiping his dalvik (which is the same we've seen here on this forum for years), he had to manually delete via root explorer.
I don't mean any disrespect to any devs, either, but it is a widely known issue.

I would love to see amon ra on the epic, I had it on my hero and I like it so much more than clockwork.

I'm the same way! Clockwork Recovery is fine and all, and it gets the job done well enough. But I'm only using it because its the only option available.
I swore by Amon_RA back with my Nexus. I LOVED the fact that people made themed/different colored versions of Amon_RA and it was just better formatted/layout/buttons then Clockwork.
I, too, would love an RA-Recovery as it is so much cleaner than clockwork.
Anyone know what would actually be involved in making this happen? I'm guessing a version from another Galaxy S would be a good start?
I know NOTHING about making this work...just curious if their is any kind of update? Devs anyone working on this? God I hope so

This has been answered a hundred times. We, over at ACS, initially attempted to make this happen. The port was above us as our devices are so different than any htc device. It essentially has to be rebuilt from source. We even attempted to get the creator involved in order to help. The problem we have is he lives in europe. Obviously with the epic being cdma, there is a problem. The device is not accessible to him. Amon_ra is more than likely not going to happen.
That's to bad too. Amon Ra is so much better then clockwork. But at least you guys tried. Thanks ACS
Nice 6 month old zombie thread.

Ehh overwhelmed...

So I wanna get cm on my buddies evo. But after half an hour just browsing around I am pretty overwhelmed on obtaining no frills instructions. Can anyone give me a link or guide on the most recent and quickest way to root and install cwm? The wikis useless to me. Too many methods up there and no way of knowing which is the best and most recent method. Thnx in advance doods.

Use unrevoked to root, flash CM from recovery.
This is good but it would be faster but less informative to use autoroot. There is or was a link to it on the evo wiki page.

Autoroot isn't nearly as reliable as Unrevoked. I see too many people posting about borked roots because of autoroot. I've used Unrevoked probably 15 times and have not had a single issue. Here's the how-to for Unrevoked.

I agree unrevoked has worked for me twice with the evo and twice with the hero when I had it. one evo for me one for my dad,one hero for me, one for my friend. Also, cw can b installed through recovery but I recommend flashing amon ra.
Google for rooting for dummies. It's on a different forum but its a complete step by step guide to rooting. And installing tons and kernels and more. It's the First link

Well my goal is to flash a senseless rom with the fps uncapped. But seeing that there's no unified simple surefire way to even root I think im gonna pass. Everything seems convoluted. Anything out there like 1 click root on the epic? You know all in one root, recovery, etc? Sorry I own an epic and from what im seeing its true what they say. Samsuck makes things easy to flash.

I've used auto root 5 times with no issues. I'm not sure what issues others have had buy nine here so far. I'd give it a try. Off course the PC I did it on I used evolution prior and maybe it was because I had all the driver installed. Idk. Good luck and God speed my friend.

No, it needs to be run from a PC but it's pretty damn easy.
I would suggest once rooted, grab RA Recovery Manager replace Clockwork Mod with it. You get more control over backups with it, plus the backup/restore process seems faster with it.
Download link, plus instructions on how to flash it are here:

+1. RA is the better and more reliable of the two.
The one time I used Autoroot, my phone hung on recovery.
The first time I used Unrevoked, it failed. I used it again, but this time in Linux and it worked fine.
Every phone is different, but the overwhelming consensus is to use Unrevoked

[Q] Question about rooting/custom roms in general

So, I've had my epic since launch day. First android device, came from palm pre. Loving it. It's rooted, custom ROM and everything. I have learned so much about the epic and android so far. Just wondering about rooting other devices.
I guess my main question is does ROM manager play a big part in custom ROMS for other devices. From what I can tell, we don't even need or use ROM manager for the most part. It seems some other devices can just be rooted, then install ROM manager which you can flash clockwork through. Why is it the epic doesn't do it the same? Just curious question. I know all about it with the epic, but other devices I'm still clueless on. Thanks
Yeah I know some of the other devices you dl rom manager and use it to flash cwm recovery. I honestly don't know why koush hasn't made the epic compatible yet.

So, this is the reason we don't do it that way? Koush just hasn't made Rom Manager compatible with the Epic? I just figured we started it another way and just stuck to it.

I'll let you know how it goes. Only reason I switched to clockwork is the girlfriend's NS4G. If she is having problems, it is easier to walk her through corrective steps if we are looking at the same menus. Still prefer RA, but we'll see how it goes.

So far it is much better than any previous versions. I did my first flash with it this morning and had no issues. When I was on previous versions, I had issues with every flash...
Once TWRP is updated and their Front End app is out, I will have to decide what combo to go with...

Major changes:
Backups now use tar over yaffs for everything except mtd partition. Backups got way faster.
Backups now preserve the filesystem type at time of backup. Restores will restore the appropriate filesystem type at restore.
Silly to ask, but any screen shots?
OK, can't restore backups made with 5.0.0.0. Either get a message of md5 mismatch or md5 not present. Back to 3.0.0.5.

Ive personally never had any issues with 3.0.0.5 if it isnt broke dont fix it!
3.0.0.5 always flashes correctly , assuming you do the correct wipes, you can go from froyo to gb and back with no issues, unlike every cwm version for galaxy s devices you brick almost everytime you go from froyo to gb and back, because the kernels dont match or some b.s
the evo 4g and 3d cwm is the best of any smartphone out

I flashed this version over the old version and when i went to restore a rom,it sent me to the bootloader, then i tried it again,i got stuck in a bootloop, since im the kind of person that doesnt give up easy,i tried it again and it finally restored my rom,i booted back into recovery from the rom and the damned recovery went back to the old version, now how is that?Too weird,i think ill just stick with the older version for now.
Diablo, just a thought, doesn't the newer version of ra allow for backup of recovery? (I still use old ra 1.80). If so, did your nandroid contain recovery?

Yes and no.
I didn't post this on xda yet for a reason, so it would be good practice to ask the person doing the work if they want it shared broader first.
That being said, the issue with restoring has to do with the flash_image binary possible getting wiped if you're doing wiping before your restore. (<-- that's not the case)
If you just restore, it should work fine. I've pulled it offline for now until I get it fixed. Thanks. Also, if you want to help, please provide me some feedback on the rootz thread for now.
you guys should really be respectful to developers and not cross post stuff without even asking. sometimes there's a reason "why" they don't share here first. i think you just found out why in this case. is it really THAT hard to send a pm? it's not like you made the discovery of the year or something by doing this. instead you've caused people to probably have problems with their recovery that could have been avoided had you NOT put this thread on here and copied over smelkus zwiki link before HE was ready to do it himself. have fun.
