I'd like to get a full 1mbps down over 4G. And once again...Sprint loses; it sucks to be first, I guess.
Sorry YOUR area sucks. 8-9Mbps here.
Of course Verizon's LTE is going to be fast, there probably isn't any traffic really going through it.
I'm sure it will go down some but those speeds are fast.
I get 5-10 depending on where I am.

Yeah, one of 10 areas that Sprint actually had rightish. Haha. What I don't get is, Clear is here and they have upwards of 5 - 10, so why have I never seen over 2, and 80% of the time, don't get one? I'm sure they throttle Sprint's traffic.
I have yet to even get 4g in my area...there is only one city in my state with 4g and I'm nowhere near it.

Maybe your not in a real good area, hell on my 3G with 2 bars im getting 1.4mbps down.
At home, pulling down around 5mbps, which is the same speed as my home wifi.
My max has been 8 mbps in Houston off Westheimer.
This thread is stupid.
I'm on T-Mobile pulling down 7.5 to 10mbps on average(MT4G), on my 3G Moto Cliq XT I'm getting 3.5 to 5mbps. Uploads for both are around 1.5mbps

I get between 5-8mbps in Columbus, OH. Haven't checked 3g speeds in awhile.

That's what I've read, but I have a hard time beliveing it, since I was at a clients house (she has clear w/ new modem), 1/2 mile away from a sprint/clear tower, modem had 5/5 bars, evo had 2/4 bars: I got .7 down, she got 4.8 down. :| Either it's throttled, or Sprint's servers suck ass.

Yeah, .5 million people in the valley (Boise, Idaho), and 3G has been 30kbps for months. This past week, however, I've seen 600/600 on 3G in a few areas, but then it randomly drops to 1x, too.
I've gotten 7-8 down a few times here but it's usually around 6. That being said, I can get 7 down on one server and .5 down on another not thirty seconds later. It all depends on the server and how many connections are between you and it. Closer is not always better either.
edit: That is pretty damn impressive though, Sprints definitely needs to widen the bandwidth or do something. I would love pings like that too...

Yeah, the more I think about it, the more it makes sense. I think Sprint's servers are just f'ed up.

Here in Chicago the difference is zero.

I just read on AT&T's website that they consider 6Mb/s to be their 4G.
This means that our 4G devices will never be any faster than the iPhone 4 which supports up to 7.2Mb/s.
When I bought my Atrix I was under the assumption that they would eventually make use of the HSPA+ that the phone supports.
If the iPhone 4 is a 3G device then so is the Atrix.
Dear AT&T,
Thanks for lying and using trickery to attract customers. You suck.
PS hurry up and at least enable HSUPA
For all those that don't know, when they enable HSUPA this will not speed up our download connection speed, only the upload. So don't expect much.

Nvm. Just read it. Normal 3G is 7.2. Not HSPA+. HSPA+ has a maximum of 14mbps. 3g is 7.2

I was on the phone with AT&T Business today about other issues, and asked about the "4G".
The rep seemed very well informed, told me no towers in my area have dates assigned to them for upgrade to 4G yet, and that I still have some which are not even 3G capable. She also told me they are trying to get their "4G" to everyone by the end of the year, and the download speed is 20mbps. This was a lengthy conversation, much more involved than this short description, but it was very interesting to talk to a rep who actually new technical stuff.
Also read somewhere that enabling HSUPA will decrease latency which will also increase download speed. Not sure about that, though.

What the network is capable of delivering and the maximum speed the device supports are two different things. Both the Inspire and the Atrix have radios that can pull up to 14.4 Mbps if the network is able to provide it.

THe key word in that statement is "approximately" 6mpbs, it is just marketing. You will barely ever see the full speeds of "4g" due to the physics of networks.

Ha! Iphone 4? The 3gs is capable of 7.2. So all we got was a 3g phone with dual core that is locked down by att and moto. If I could pull 6 mbs on a regular I would be really happy with that. I avg about 700 kbps.

like sifon said... and i wouldn't even exactly call it a "marketing" term. It's just going the logical route. They say approximately 6Mbps.... because if they say something like "You will expect to see 10Mbps".... then imagine how many calls they're going to get from people complaining cause they're ONLY getting 6Mbps. And i don't even see why people are complaining about THAT! 6Mbps? on a PHONE?!? Just a few years ago, 5Mbps was the fastest broadband internet connection via cable in my area. 6Mbps is probably still faster than a lot of broadband connections here in the US (except for that one city that's going to be getting Google's gigabit fiber optic internet connection.... lucky f*ckers).
And yes... when they enable HSUPA, we will probably (see? if i said "will" here, me and anyone quoting me would probably get flamed like crazy if it didn't come to pass) see a lot lower latencies and higher download speeds than we currently are. As we all know, internet connections are a two way thing. If you can't get information TO the servers, you won't get it FROM them either.
I have 4g download speed in my neighborhood. (luck me! ) I pull 4 on average, and 5 rarely. 6 is a marketing speed. You will never see 6.

They're obviously .33 still. HSUPA isn't enabled on our phones yet. Not until we get that HSUPA update.
Also, can anyone confirm whether it's 14 Mbps, or 20/22? I keep seeing different numbers tossed around, and I can't be sure anymore.
my phone says H+ on it and 5 bars yet download speed says 500-600 kbps and upload is right around 100. on my wifi at home i have clearwire and i get 3 megs down 1 meg up and my phone says it gets the same 3md/1mu when its hooked up to wifi. do i neeg to go get a different sim card for my atrix? ATT told me i dont need one because the 4G network wont be out for another 6 months to a year (which is misinformation, we have it in seattle AFAIK). but even w/ 3G i should be pulling A LOT faster than that right?

i can pull that down and more with my atrix whats ur point ?
Think the point is that with a 4G phone, if you're in a 4G area, you WOULD be pulling a lot more.... but due to not having fast uploads, download speeds are crippled.
the problem here is that with AT&T's 'enhanced back-haul program' they are only planning on buying some additional bandwidth and speed (raising it to 6Mbps) for each tower's individual internet connection. So even if the tower is using HSPA+ to transmit data to our phones, it is only going to be as fast as the internet connection that the tower has.
Its like using a really nice Wireless router, and wireless card. While it is nice, it doesn't make your connection speed any faster than an older model of router and card that could already handle your internet connection.
I really hope I'm wrong, but anyone who tells you that your Atrix is going to have a 20Mbps mobile data connection from AT&T is just blowing smoke up your @$$.
Interesting facts:

11 HSPA+ networks offering peak rates of 28 Mbps

Check about phone > status and make sure you are getting an hspa+ connection. Check it when the mobile network is active and data is transmitting because it will drop down to regular hspa while idle. Also, in order to get DC-HSPA (which is required for 42mbps) it has to be available in your area. Not a lot of markets have it yet.

I am getting hspa+:15 in the settings with speed test running in the background. What does that mean? 42mbps? Speed tests 6-7mbps at best with 1sec latency! Latency is worse than what I had on hspa 14 on the Samsung exhibit ii.
I am in Philadelphia. I thought we got hspa+ 42 a long while ago here. Although the network seems to always be congested here, often coming to a complete halt, forcing me to go to edge to send and receive emails.
[EDIT]: I think I was wrong on HSPA+ 42 being available in Philadelphia. We're still on 21. According to an article on android central we will get HSPA+ 42 on the 1900Mhz band here instead of 1700Mhz AWS. HSPA+ category 15, which is what the reading in the settings are showing, refers to HSPA+ 21 ... so no DC-HSPA here ... I hope the upgrades come soon, and take care of the congestion issues around the busy parts of the city during the day. It's stupid to have a smart phone that cannot even send an receive emails !
Here in Charlottesville, VA (where HSPA+ 42 is supposedly available), I am getting less than 512 kbps down with over 1000 ms ping. This was in an area that indicated HSPA+:15.
Did I get a phone with a bad radio? Or just a location thing?
This is consectutive tests on different servers further and further away (started with closest last is in south Dakota - pings suck but speeds are great)

Its as a test to see if I will get data over anything but 4G, since 3G (UMTS:3) yields no connection whatsoever. And by forcing 2G (yes I know is edge, duh) I wanted to see if it was only a 3G issue. But obviously its not, since it doesn't get anything either. Not even 0.01 Mbps.
Btw forcing 2G gives me EDGE, thus showing an E symbol. That's why I expected to get something over E when I force 2G

In that case they need to fix the technology. That's how it works you know...things get better by patching bugs and fixing anomalies. If it's causing unexpected negative outcomes to the user, it behooves the manufacturer to fix it. You must have really crappy signal then for it to be going between 2G and 3G. Between 3G and HSPA isn't a big deal because that's by design as was said. Having active connection to the towers only ties up the limited number of channels on a tower plus kills your battery faster. If everyone held open channels on the towers, calls would be failing since they had no channels to connect to. I think it's something like 256 channels per tower or something. That's why tower density is important in big cities.
I'm on AT&T MVNO though and my phone stays on H the whole time (not dropping back to 3G). I've had that issue with my SGS2 and newer radios for it but the older ones would always fall back to 3G. There is a momentary lag when the device renegotiates a channel with the tower but in general it shouldn't take that long, maybe 3-5 seconds from complete idle. There's a half-way stage called DCH (or is it ACH) where it can jump back to actively sending data in 1/2 second but it only stays that way if the timeout of 7 seconds doesn't expire (if the tower you are connected to support Fast Dormancy it does 7 seconds, if not i think it's 30 seconds).
Yeah, it looks like I've got really terrible signal strength at my house, but still manage to pull 5mb down. My signal strength is around 100 at best. The only time it was punting me down to 2g was when I was first activating, but that hasn't happened again. Maybe it was just a new setup type of issue, and like all of us, one little thing goes wrong and I think the sky is falling.
It's normal for it to switch from 3g to hspa

then you are connected to lte. maybe your area is either very congested, or on an edge of the towers coverage.
I think the major benefit of lte is it's superior building penetration and more consistent signal.
