I've been borrowing an iPad two and I really can't see the lure especially for the price. Could some of you guys say wether it's a good idea to pick up a nook ?
You can get them relatively cheaply on eBay and I love the idea of having cyanogen mod on a tablet.
I'm not so fussed about cameras and all that the iPad camera is horse **** anyway.
Interested to know what you guys think?

Well, here's my 2 cents worth. I got my husband an iPad, the original one. We both already had Android phones. My kids got me my Nook Color for Christmas, at my request. I feel the iPad is so limited in how you interact with it. It has no proper file system, so if you want to put files onto it, they have to be associated with a certain app. My husband was hoping to use it to take pdfs and excel files with him to look at and edit at work. It's a huge hassle. Apps generally cost more, in my experience, on the iPad. There are possibly more accessories for the iPad, but they tend to cost more, too.
As for the Nook Color, I am very happy with it. I have a 16GB microSD card in it that I can boot into either CM7 or CM9 (Ice cream sandwich). Or, if I choose, I can boot into the original Nook OS. I ran a script to stop updates, and am at 1.3. So, I can boot into the Nook OS, read books, get freebies from B & N on Fridays, and read for an hour a day, in the store, any Nook book. Honestly, I spend most of my time booted into Android. I find my Nook runs much faster on Android. I sometimes have trouble tethering my Nook to my phone on the Nook OS, but generally it works better on Android. (I have rooted my HTC Evo 3D phone.) I can do just about anything on my Nook on Android that I can do on my Android phone, except make calls. The Nook TABLET actually has a mic on it, but there aren't as many hacks for it as there are for the Nook Color, yet. I think that someday we might be able to either use a USB mic or get a BT mic working on the Nook Color, but it's not certain. I personally like the apps better that are available on the Android market vs the apps in the Apple app store. And, my primary desktop is an iMac. I also dual boot both my aging laptop and my netbook to Windows and Linux.
Of course, you can totally replace the Nook OS by flashing Android to the onboard memory called emmc. If you have the proper microSD card, though, some people say the difference in speed is negligible. The onboard memory is actually 8GB of SanDisk flash memory.
If you decide to boot from a microSD card, read at least some of the thread linked below on choosing a microSD card. In general, the class 10 and even some class 6 cards do not work well when running the OS from them. I got a 16 GB SanDisk from Costco that says it's a SanDisk Mobile Ultra. It's benchmarks for both writing small files and large files are pretty good. And it was only $20.
I suggest you get a warranty for your Nook Color, wherever you get it. There is an ongoing problem with the charger cable going bad. And, though it is a micro USB cable, it is proprietary in the sense that it will only charge in the fast mode if you have one from B & N. If you have troubles, most people seem to be able to get one from either a B & N store or over the phone with their support, but only if under warranty. I got the 2 year warranty from B & N, which is $40. If you have to go buy a new cable, it comes with the AC charger and costs $24.95! Possibly your best bet is to buy one of the refurbed Nook Colors from B & N's ebay store. The current price is $149, with free shipping. It doesn't state, but I think they come with the standard 1 year warranty. I would check on that, though. And also ask it you can get the extended warranty for it. Though we have a warranty from Square Trade for our iPad, I wouldn't do it for the Nook. I think it's better to go through B & N because of the charging cable problem.

I agree with the your assessment. There are rumors of an Ausus 7" tablet coming out next quarter at $250.

Neither. It's the "blinking" cable. From what I've heard, the micro USB end goes bad. There's an indicator light in that end of the cable. There has been speculation that it overheats the connector that then breaks or otherwise fails. I've only had mine since Christmas and have been fine so far. <crosses fingers; says a prayer> The bad thing is, the connector, while looking like a normal micro USB plug, is actually longer than others. If you don't have this longer one, it will only charge slowly...

If you can get one for $150 I'd say go for it. Otherwise I'd hold off for a bit. There are supposed to be a whole slew of ICS tablets coming out soon.
My only gripes about my NC is that the single core processor struggles a bit even when overclocked, and the horrific Bluetooth range. Beyond that and for the price it certainly was an unbeatable deal when I got mine over a year ago.
As to the charging cable either I'm lucky or it's my incredible OCD when it comes to treating electronics gingerly, but I've not had an issue at all with it. I'm not sure a $40 warranty on a sub $200 dollar device that is pretty well outdated makes sense. If you are concerned about a potential cable failure you can do what many others have done and get a warranty replacement preemptively.

i bought a refurb for my son for xmas - he's 5
however my wife, who has had her NC since last xmas wanted to see if she liked CM7 enough to commit (now she dual boots off sd card) so we bought his over the summer, figuring it would give her 6 months to "play with it" while I got it prepped for him.
as I was wrapping it up, I had it plugged in to charge (so it would work when he unwrapped it), cable got hooked around the chair and the whole thing pulled off the desk.
everything looked ok, but it always took a few tries to get it charging, then last week, it stopped charging.
swapped cables with hers, no go
So this weekend bought one from CL for $100, still wrapped in the plastic.
So I was pretty good with that.
HOWEVER if anyone knows of a step by step on getting these APART (I know some sites do "tear downs) I would love to try and fix this one.
I believe that the USB plug needs to be reseated/resoldered.
I just dont want to 'rip it up' if there is a more appropriate way of getting it open.

I will second (third?) the suggestions to try to find one for under $150. Heck, I think I've seen refurbs for $120-130 a couple times too. I got mine almost a year ago when they were first $200. It was totally worth it then, but there is now a lot more competition at that price point. Idk if it's because of the Touchpad fire sale or what (that also makes a great Android tablet, btw).
I don't miss the cameras either. Sometimes it would be nice to have GPS, but not a big deal. That said, CM makes these things GREAT. I mainly use mine for reading still, but it's capable for light web browsing, and is super portable for a tablet.
The Nook Color has been as cheap as $70 after cashback at overstock.com. I didn't get in at that price but I did pick up 9 for family @ $120 right after black friday.
I got mine when it first came out for $250 and haven't regretted it. That being said, last month I picked up a 10.1" lenovo K1 when it was on sale for $250 after instant discount and $30 off $150 coupon. I use my 10.1" a lot more than my nook now but still consider the nook an excellent value (it's a great device for anyone willing to take the time to get android on it).
$250 will be the new price point for android tablets. It will get harder and harder to sell them at $500 when there's so many cheap ones out there. The K1 is at $280 again but it's in store only and it'll be harder to apply the coupon.

Well... here is my in depth post on the pros and cons of getting a Nook Color...
Well... where to start...
CONS:
The Nook is HEAVY - 500gramm sure weight a lot and comparing it to other 7" tablets it's the one that makes your hand fall off if you try to read for more than an hour...
It's lacking cameras and mics... and even bluetooth mics dont work properly with it at this point... so... thats a big con for me...
Even if taking pictures sucks on tablets... its just too damn comphy to get on Skype and have a Videotalk on there...
Sadly no Video on Nook, hell - not even normal phonecalls on it...
Work-In-Progress Android 4 being the last con in it... because its as the name said work in progress... you will encounter a whole bunch of things that dont work just right yet... if you dont mind stepping down to 2.3.7 Android though and thus missing out on Tablet-Optimizations Android 4 brings in then this might not apply to you however.
PROS:
The most awesome battery life you will ever see on a Android 7" Tablet... I was able to squeeze 10 hours of REAL use out of this tablet with the right settings... (turned down screen brightness, wifi off, etc.)
Sadly other devices range from the worst (2 hours) to the okay range (8 hours) - but ive never seen one top the nook in that part...
This is most likely thanks to efficiently picked hardware, software optimizations and the 4000mah battery it runs on (while other tablets range from 3000 to 3700mah).
Fast Charging will be the next PRO... most tablets use a normal USB Port to charge, thus being limited to 5V for charging... (Ramos W6HD for example)
The nook comes with a special cord and charger that allows for 13V charging... speeding the charging process up by more than two times.
A lot of merchandise available will be the final PRO to it - similiar to iPad & Co its easy to find a whole bunch of Nook gadgets to work with, be it that extra cool book case you're looking for or some nice anti-gloss foils for the screen, you will easily find those for the nook.
Not as easy on other tablets...
CONCLUSION:
Depending on what you want to do with the Tablet... whether you want the full Android 4 Tablet experience or not... and so on... you might be looking for something else...
Also... the price is another thing...
Previously the nook was the "cheap mans' tablet" - as tablets were expensive as hell...
However... you might be better off getting a Ainol Novo 7 Elf or Ainol Novo 7 Aurora...
By now, they are easily on par with the Nook... both price/value wise as well as feature wise... and last but not least they come with cams, mics and a proper Android 4 OS...
The only thing you would lose when going for the Novo Elf or Novo Aurora is 2 hours of battery runtime... giving you 8 hours instead of 10...
Last but not least, stay away from the Ramos W6HD... what looks like a good deal on the paper is broken by the awful battery runtime (4 hours).
I say... give all of those options a thought... try to get some info about the devices I just mentioned to you... and then just grab whatever you think best fits your daily needs.

I bought another NC (used from Craigslist) a month ago and went through this exercise and what you suggest will indeed get the NC back to "factory fresh" state but if the previous owner didn't hit that "deregister" link while they were logged on to that NC prior to selling it to you, you will NOT be able to register it to your B&N account as it will show in the B&N system that the NC with that serial number is registered to the previous owner.
I spent at least an hour on three separate B&N chat sessions and at least 15 minutes on the phone with the B&N Support person to get that answer. The Support associate told me that since the original owner doesn't have the NC anymore they would have to call the 800 number and ask them to deregister that NC off of their B&N account before I could register it to my B&N account.
In my case the previous owner was kind enough to call that 800 number to do just that. Otherwise I wouldn't have been able to register it with B&N on my account but it would still be fully functional with a custom ROM on it.
Well... for me its a easy decission really...
B&N doesn't operate in europe, I'm in europe, so it never was an option to begin with...
I got my Nook Color because at the time it was the cheapest way to get a properly working relyable tablet and so far I'm okay with it.
I get my books off drm-free bookstores in the internet, use FBReader to read them and Mango for my daily manga needs.
That and a whole bunch of IT Crowd Episodes + Animes help me stay a happy camper on my CM9 Nook Color.
The nook is great because its easily rootable. The screen is wonderful.
However.... I might be the only one who thinks this, but even with decent overclocking, android (cm7 AND cm9) is jumpy and laggy.

For those who actually were able to make it to the NY Event, how do you feel about your purchase? It is meeting or exceeding expectations? Is it heavier or fatter than you thought it would be? I'm hoping to see some reviews from actual users, not review-sites. I know there are a lot of the IO edition users here, but I feel when you plunk down $500-600 for a device, your feelings are amplified and may provide for a "different" review.
Edit: and for those who wanted the grey, how do you feel about the white that you had to purchase? I originally wanted white, but feel that the grey would be more durable (that's a total guess, though).
My specific question regards creak and light bleed. I love the Asus transformer Inks some slight light bleeding along the bottom and right side. It is minor but I am obsessive.
Don't mind the bigger size of it as I do prefer its expandability.
Only review out since new release of the Samsung tab is on mobiletechreview YouTube. I could swear I see some light bleeding along the bottom and right sides. If this is at all an issue on these tabs I am happy to stay withmy Asus.
But my return window ends tomorrow so need help deciding now.

I'm happy with my purchase. i am also glad that i went in the afternoon (2:30p) instead of joining some line it literally took 2minutes tops. The build quality is actually quite sturdy considering that it is extreamly light, everything just fits snug and tight no creaks. i didnt notice any light leakage, but i was slow to notice it on my evo until i saw what to look for, so it's not noticible if present at all. i think for me personally no matter which tab i keep i'm going to be giving up something from the next, i like the sd card and the overclocking of my xoom but i gave it up for the light weightness and the sleakness of 10.1.

I purchased mine yesterday, I got their at about 11:15am before the sale started. I really wanted to purchase the 32gb but ended up just buying the 16gb. This is my first 'tablet' that I've ever purchased.
I have a Droid 2 Global phone and I've done all the rooting etc/loading different mods etc and I'm looking forward to doing it with this. I bought this because I want to customize it the same way I did for my phone.
I'm kind of disappointed that i''ll have to buy the usb desktop hub thing in order to get full the usb functionality. Other than that though I really like it.
I bought the Wi-fi version because i can easily tether it to my phone (and have- it works really well). I commute from NJ to NY every day so I wanted something for the train that was bigger than my phone. I think its worth the purchase.

I bought mine yesterday after work around 6:00 and I can honestly say that as a former Transformer owner, the Tab is a much better tablet for the extra $100. No light bleed, no creaks, no FCs...none at all. Plus its a lot more comfortable to hold especially over a longer period of time. Be advised that if you are a Mac owner there is currently no way to transfer through USB. I had to use doubletwist and sync wirelessly.

I was third in line. I'd been waiting since 5 in the morning. I'd planned to get the 32GB in grey, but since they only had the 16 white, I was a little let down...until I started to use it. I'm totally and completely happy with the device, and can't see myself being separated from it. I've already ordered the USB adapter from Samsung so I can connect my travel HDD and thumb drives for movies. I actually am so happy with it that I'm going to keep the White 16GB.
I wish i could see why the 2 people who are unhappy wothhthe device have voted as such. Assuming, that is, that they're not just trolling.
I'm only selling mine because I want the 32gb version. its a really sweet device.

I let a couple of the Samsung reps know my dissatisfaction with the way the whole thing was handled, but that's a gripe for another thread. I'm happy with the unit and have zero regrets and, if I didn't like the gray-backed one better, I'd totally keep this one. Those that haven't gotten to handle one yet will be very happy with the unit.

1. How the F do you transfer files? I'm not interested in hunting down drivers or trying to find back door soutions. The whole purpose of getting an Android device over an ipad is NO ITUNES meaning DRAG AND DROP. I have tried connecting on Mac OS and Windows with no luck in getting any of my computers to recognize the device.
2. I installed Dropbox, waited 2 hours for 1 movie file to transfer over (AVI/divx format) and when it had finally transferred, the default player would not support playback. I didn't even bother trying to DL another media player. The F'in default player should play divx files since that is what is advertised.
3. The damn USB cable requires the charging block that came with it to charge. I can't trickle charge on my laptop's port or use any of my USB travel chargers. That means 1 more charger PLUS one more stupid proprietary connecting port that I have to travel with. Maybe not a big deal to most but I fly about 150 times per year so 2 more things to have to remember to pack is a huge deal.
WARNING - this is a half baked OS. Looks pretty and the device flies but is nowhere near ready for mass consumption. I work 60-80 hours per week with a screaming 2 year old at home. I don't have time to search the web for stupid tricks to make this thing do basic things. For $500 I want something that works well and feels solid. And WITHOUT itunes.
Got mine last night a BB. They seemed to have at least a dozen left in the display area stack. But when I inquired 10 minutes ago they said they were sold out,though the may get more I stock by tomorrow.
I too wwas disappointed that the white model was the only one available, but in actual use it looks and feels pretty good. I may just stick with it.
Build is surperb, but honeycomb needs more tuning. Dedicated apps are supreme, just not enough of them. Looking forward to software improvements, including custom ROM, but I doubt I'll see better hardware before Christmas or ipad3 next year.

Mine died today. i was using it and i shut the screen off and now it wont turn back on... I will go back to Best Buy tomorrow to exchange it for a new one.

2. Don't bother to convert when transferring video files, and play it using a file a file manager, and it should be fine. (I've watched two HD David films with it already)
3. Not sure about the charging situation, shall check again.

i am still not sure i want to by the Acer,,, or the Asus..
be honest with me.. why did YOU buy the Acer.
it doesnt have to be Asus vs Acer. it can just be why you got the Acer.
was it the usb port?, the expandable memory? price? (target has them for $399 so i am really tempted.)

i also am still not sure if it cna see dSLR cameras on the USB port to read the images off the cameras memory card so if someone says it works for their dSLR then thats a huge game changer for me.
i own an ipad and its really really a tough choice given the app and game availability on the ipad, but i am an android phone user so i am very familiar with Android.

To be honest, it was down to the Acer or the ASUS for me although I did like the fact the hardware was working at launch (SD slot, USB etc).
While everyone seems to be complaining on the Acer ROM update schedule, or lack thereof, I am happily running a custom ROM (of which there are several now) which is now at 3.2
What drove me to the Acer was it was available when I decided to buy. Otherwise, it would have been a hard choice. But, I think after actually looking and holding the ASUS I would have picked the Acer.
I use it primarily for business (sales) showing customers products by using well bookmarked PDF files, email (I moved my domain over to Google Apps for business and quick lookups while I am on the road (WiFi tether to my HTC phone) so I don't need a seperate data plan.
No complaints.

I needed an upgrade from the Archos 101 which was only about three weeks old at the time I saw the upcoming Acer. Preordered it from BB.
I still would have gotten the Acer if Asus TF was available. I need the USB. Period. And I don't care about the TF dock feature.
Well I just plugged my Canon Power Shot A1100 IS in and the Aconia recognized it right away and the pictures showed up right away.
I haven't tried my Nikon or Canon DSLR yet but no reason why they shouldn't work as well on jpg files.
I bought it because of the USB slot, expandable memory, HDMI and the price.
Bought mine for simple reasons
I did the stupid thing and did not bother to do any homework before going out and buying my first tablet (apple I pad 2) - returned to the store the next day. Had no idea it had no native flash support (the "solution" was to use Skyfire for crummy flash support).
Went home, did my homework - when it came down to simple price/vs features the Acer Iconia seemed like the best choice - microSd, full size USB port (awesome for me - it works with a USB hub also, I have lots of USB devices).
Not sure we can claim apple has much if any "app lead" over android tablets - and once you consider how many apps are written for the Android phone but run great under Honeycomb as well. Don't feel much of an app shortage here, the Droid market is freaking huge.
All in all, very happy with my purchase.
I bought mine largely due to the full-sized USB port as I'm an avid retrogamer, so getting to play emulators with the actual controllers (I have USB adapters for them) on my tablet was pretty much a childhood fantasy come true ^_^.
Anyway, that and I really love the metal casing... it just feels solid and sturdy, not large or bulky at all even though it's the heaviest tab of the bunch. I'm sure in some instances, like holding it up over your head in bed or something, you'd notice the weight, but really, there are no heavy or bulky tablets in this category at all, only those that are impressively small like the Galaxy Tab 10.1.
I will note that Acer is so far the worst at getting updates out, but the community here seems pretty devoted, not to mention there's a ton of cross-developer action as the Tegra 2that all of these share means much of the software can just be transplanted from one brand to another. So, if you're going to root and run roms, software becomes a bit less of a concern. As far as the hardware goes, I love it myself.
It was a choice between the Acer and Asus for me. I got the Acer because I was impatient, but I ended up not returning it because after using it I couldn't see myself getting by with no usb and no flash. I considered the new Galaxy Tab as well but for the same reason I decided not to wait.
If I DID end up waiting, I'm sure I'd have decided to wait for a Kal-El based tablet. At some point in the 'waiting for better to come' game, you have to take a step or you'll never buy a product. I use the tablet daily, even my wife uses it now and so it's proven it's value to me.
I use the flash for extremely stupid things, but tbh to each his own, right? One of these things is to sneak into bed at night. By the time I go to bed sometimes my wife is already sleeping and she's a very light sleeper. Flicking a light on to see where I'm going would surely wake her up and it's sometimes difficult to navigate around the bed (without smacking off a big or little toe). I thought, "can I live without the flash? Sure!" But it would be an inconvenience, especially if I do ever find myself in a slightly more important scenario where I need it and don't have (for taking a pic in low light, for eg).
The USB is a must as I travel a lot and the big reason for getting the tablet beyond using it in my home is so I can travel light (without having to use my laptop). With the usb I can plug flash drives or hard drives in and watch my tv series and movies or use it to juice my phone if I strain it chatting too long or whatever.
Other than that, I didn't like the feel of the Transformer and I didn't want to depend on getting/using the keyboard part to have usb functionality. I had been keeping up with all the pics of the light bleed and saw it first hand. Who wants to worry about getting a tablet with light bleed at a time when they weren't in very many stores? That would have meant back and forth shipping. Not my thing.
The Acer is fully usable as-is, with the Asus and Samsung you MUST buy accessories for them to get a usb port.
I also considered resale value, like any tech head . If I am to resell my Acer A500 right now, I'm going to get ~$400 for it (not everyone knows about the sale price of 350 at certain stores). In a few months, I will lose another $50 to depreciation...as by then I'm sure the price will further fall to something more attractive to fringe and impulse buyers.
The Samsung with added accessories to make it function similarly to the Acer is already in the $550 region, but it will depreciate exactly the same as the Acer, unfortunately. Same with the Asus.
So after you buy the accessories to get USB (if you need it), you still end up selling the other tabs (with accessories) for approximately the same price as the Acer, as resale value for accessories is little to nothing and you can very rarely if at all sell them on their own. (This is based on the many, many times I've seen people reselling their tablets with accessories like docks and cases for way, way less than what they got it for).
In essence, you lose more money with the other tablets IF you need* to accessorize them. *(to play catch up to the A500, like buy the keyboard section for Asus or buy the proprietary addon for the Samsung to get USB)
I replied before reading the whole thread and missed the inquiries into the Apple side of things <insert evil grin>... imma hate me some on Apple, hoo wee. Android is slowly doing to Apple in the mobile market what Microsoft did to Apple in the computer market. What's amazing is that everyone always said Microsoft beat Apple because of developer support, because Windows had all the software, all the games. Now, we've seen the exact opposite, Apple with all of the software goodies and their competitor standing out alone on their OS alone... but what happened this time? Android is proving once and for all that Apple's walled-garden approach, their almost communistic approach to electronics just isn't going to appeal to the masses once they are exposed to the idea of choice, something Android offers in spades. We all want to do whatever we want with our devices... they are OUR devices after all, not Apple's or Samsung's or HTC's or Google's. Apple has made it clear that they intend to impose strict control over their hardware and software, whereas Google has opened the door wide and invited everyone in with a gentle wave. I, for one, after having had (and at the time loved) an iPhone for 2 years, will NEVER buy a single Apple product again.

I'm not a huge Apple fan at all but in their defense they do have a huge "app lead" and it's not necessarily the number or amt. (though it certainly does have that as well) it's the popularity of the device. The iPad has had hulu and netflix forever and Android is just getting it now. It's not a huge deal but the fact is, apps will almost always hit IOS first, and that IS saying something.
I agree with you though, I don't feel a shortage. I have every app I need (and many I don't, lol) so I'm not worried. With Hulu and Netflix now on 2.2/2.3 and heading soon to 3.1 I can safely say I'm completely happy with my purchase as well.

I don't, my daughter and son-in-law do (Ipad 1 & 2). I had enough time to use theirs but to each his own they say.
I like being able to read/write office files (Polaris) and maybe you can do that in the App Store?? I also don't like needing to use iTunes for everything (and maybe you don't?).
Like I said, no regrets on my part.
If I was going to be torn between devices it wouldn't be between the Acer and the Asus it would be between the Acer and the Toshiba Thrive.
I have the ipad2 32gb 3g Verizon. Stood in line on March 11. It's nice I play w/ it occasionally. I really like my Acer a500 though. It does more than the ipad can. Imo the Acer is a better machine.
I have the Nikon d3100 dslr. Both tablets will display the jpegs. I pop out the SD card and use a card reader, in the Acer, or the adapter, in the Apple, to access the pictures.
Also, starting tomorrow, the Acer is $350 at Target ($399-50gc).
Like most people, full size USB. All Android tablets are pretty much the same... this had full size USB so easy choice.
However, if I had to make a choice now, it'd be a bit harder cos the Tosh Thrive has it as well but that looks massive! But you can get it in pretty colours.. oooh!
edit: Oh, I also see it has a full size hdmi! I've already broken 2 micro-hdmi cables on the Acer cos all u need to do is put a tiny bit of pressure on the cable and the end snaps off!
For me it was all about the SD expandability, if I had known about the Toshiba Thrive, I probabbaly would have waited. It's not all about micro-weight and thickness with me. Acer tab has micro SD up to 32 G, Toshiba has full SD up to 128 G I believe.

has anyone compare this acer iconia a500 to the viewsonic gtab, which have similar hardware. only difference is the older android 2.2. it has usb and hdmi and etc... i am debating between the two. also gtab aonly cost 260 buck at amazon
As far as the gTablet goes, the software isn't a concern since roms for all of these Tegra 2 devices are becoming plentiful and easy to install, so finding 3.0 or 3.1 on the gTablet is likely a piece of cake. Now, as far as the SCREEN goes ...
The aspect ratio on the gTablet is just off... everything is squished just a little, so round things are slightly ovular, squares are slightly rectangular... I got a Pocket eDGe off of woot a while back and it was the exact same way. The screen on the gTablet is also off-center with that thick-ass bezel along the bottom. Personally, I originally wanted a gTablet until I saw that screen, but if you can live with it and wanna run a custom rom, it's the cheapest way to get a Tegra 2 tablet, and it even has a full-size USB port on there, which was one of the reasons I'd originally considered it. As for how it feels in the hand, I played with one and it feels like a cheap Xoom... similar thickness and feel to the edges, but obviously a lower (though acceptable) build quality. I still think the way my Acer feels in my hands is the best of all those I've tried, including the Xoom and Galaxy Tab 10.1 (oh but the GTab 10 is f-ing sexy... my bf has that one). If you can afford the Acer, I'd still say go for that one, but if money is your primary concern and you're not bothered by the screen, go for it. Just remember, the screen's resolution is slightly lower (1024x600 vs 1280x800 on the rest), and there's only 512MB RAM in there vs the 1GB the others have... also only a front facing cam, none on the back, but I never take pics with my tablet anyway... that's what my phone is for. Otherwise, it's Tegra 2 all the way... it's definitely worth what they're going for these days, but so is the Acer even though it costs more.

I'm right there with you. I'm still within my return window, so I'm seriously considering returning the a500 and getting the thrive when it comes in august. I've always been a toshiba fan.
My only concern is will the toshiba be locked down and unrootable.
Mainly because of Android (aka not an oversize iPod) and the USB slot.
Would have gone for another if it was thinner. Now with the acer case on it's darn fat and heavy. If you don't really care about the USB go for samsung 8.9. I'm still torn between the two.

The major selling point for the Kindle Fire is of course the price. Especially in this forum where all we really care about is the price and hardware so we can put custom ROMs on later.
So as i see it, they both have similar processors, the same amount of RAM and cost the same but the Ideapad has a bunch of other stuff- dual cameras, gps, bluetooth and a microsd slot.
so assuming both devices get rooted why would we choose the Fire over the Ideapad?
cant tell if the A1 has an IPS screen
specs show that the A1 has TI OMAP 3622, which isnt listed on the ti omap page, but the nc is 3621, so guessing its the same chip, @ 1ghz rather than 800mhz.
the A1 also has a smaller battery 3550 mAh vs 4000 mAh (11% smaller or about 7hrs, if NC has 8hr baseline)
so, guessing that if the A1 does have an IPS screen, it would have same performance to an O/C nook color, but with 1hr less battery life. with the NC2 coming out very soon, for the A1 to complete, guessing that sony will have to drop the price for the 16gb model to $200 to be competitive.
I have been wondering myself how this is all going to fall out.
Supposedly the ideapad may be a minimum 250$ for those of us living in the states with no SD card option.
While the kindle fire is nice.. 16 GB can feel small on a phone.. so I don't know if it is practical for a tab at all without SD card expansion.
If the roms maintain the silk browser and amazon storage.. it may be worth it.
The downsides to the Kindle I see are as follows.
1. lack of buttons.
2. any mods done may be more permanent since it is a more modified version of android.. So once it is rooted/romed.. I worry it may not be able to go "back to stock" which is a bit more damaging.
The only advantage to the kindle I see is the dual core processor..which by itself is sex/tempting..
But, honestly I don't see any other advantage unless the only reason you want a tablet is as an ereader in the first place (which is true of many people)
It does have an IPS display and from what i understand there are is an 8gb version for $200 that wont ship in the US and a 16gb for $250 that will (i didnt see anything about no sd slot in the 8gb version)
Maybe the release of the kindle fire will push lenovo to sell the $200 8gb version in the us.
actually the lack of button seems like a big deal. i mean, we can root it but how functional is android without the home and menu buttons?
IPS display, gorilla glass & price are the only positives.
Oh, one more, it will drive the price down on every other tablet except for the ipad.
ok to lack of hardware buttons Cm7 for the book puts an on screen section on the status bar for menu, back and search.

The A1 has a single core CPU vs the dual core on the Kindle Fire. That's pretty big for me. I already have a Nook color and it can get a bit sluggish sometimes, even o/c to 1200.
I also have an NC, and it runs fine for what I use it for. I don't use widgets/apps that run continuously. It can play MKV/AVI movies OK at SD resolution, using QQPlayer.
The big question is how good is the KF as a modded device, and lack of an SD slot is a major bummer--not just for ease of modding, but also for storage expansion. 8GB (actually, 5GB) isn't a lot. The unrooted KF can get away with it, since it uses Amazon's cloud services. CM7 can't.
But the Lenovo A1 isn't in the equation, as you can already get the same (except cams & GPS) from the existing NC right now for $150. And the NC is already a CM-supported device, so you don't have to wait around a couple of months for it to get dev support. As for the missing features--cams, GPS, HDMI-out--you have to ask yourself what's important for your use. Those aren't important to me.
I'm looking forward to the NC2, which is rumored to have the same 4430 SoC. Hopefully, B&N will match the KF's $199 price, but if the NC2 is as moddable as the NC, at $250 it would still be a good deal for the SD slot.
I agree, NC is probably still a good deal than the A1. I had a nook color before, I liked it for a while but was disappointed that it didn't have a mic. and the speed was a little bit slow as well, even after OC. then, I sold it and got a 7 inch galaxy tab. I loved the tab a lot, it only costed me 260 (woot deal) and it came with everything and 99% of games and app worked fine after gingerbread upgrade. Then I was stupid enough to trade the tab with the 10.1 tab... the 10.1 tab was good and much faster than the 7 tab but too big and half of my apps didn't work.
Anyways, i am also looking for a 7-8 inches tablet.. I want a dual-core, gps, mic, sd-card, at least 8 hours battery life and under $350. mic and gps are must since I have many apps and games for my sons that they need mic and gps..
I am waiting for the galaxy 7+.. Any other idea?

I really like the idea of "cheap, no frills" tabs.
I mean in my phone I get the idea.. GPS is nice since if I get lost odds are I will have my phone.
Bluetooth is nice since I'm using my phone anyway.
In a tablet device.. if I can get it cheaper without frills.. then so be it.
I'm really going back and forth both ways on the kindle fire. I may pick up one if I decide to hop on a tablet yet.
It really depends on whether or not the A1 comes out and what kind of reviews it gets.
I guess what we expect the tablet to do also plays into it a lot though. I mean, I just want a web browsing/manga reading device
I've been looking at these too. The IdeaPad is supposed to have a GPS, which is really nice. I'm not sure what the screen is going to be like.
Anyway, I think the Fire is going to appeal to the common man, but the IdeaPad is going to appeal more to the hacker. I'm shopping for my wife, so I'm suck in the middle.
Either way, I welcome the device. Android doesn't really have a main stream tablet. The Transformer is highly tech cool and the Galaxy 10 is pretty and refined, but nothing has really come along to put Android into the main stream tablet world. Sure it's most likely 2.3, but the Fire is going pull a ton of attention to the Android tablet world.
I think an unexplored angle is that it could even break into Apple's bread and butter iPod touch market. If game developers pick up on it, it becomes a very attractive touch competitor. Better browser, better CPU, better screen, same price. I'm sure it will run Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja. In 6 months the reburbs will be $150, fairly close to the magic $100 disposable tech line.

Because of the integration with Amazon media services and their Cloud storage. I already have a Xoom 10.1 tablet so I'm not looking for the benefits of a tablet. The Fire will be a convenient device to read, email, watch an occasional movie and wait for the hackers to do their thing.
If I were buying a tablet it would not be a 7 inch one regardless of the capabilities.

Though I see the logic in the point you mention for your planned usage, I still do not see much point in a rooted Fire. Kind of a rat in the cage, due to the lack of storage expansion. Not to mention the Amazon interface and their closed app system would be compromised (not seeing Amazon letting that happen). In short, a person will have a few GB of space and that is it. Android market? What is the point? No room for apps & media
Seems the price is not worth the trade-offs, IMO.
I also have a KK which I paid $139 and for $60 more I will have a much more capable device. Also currently have 20gb of storage in the cloud that includes pics, docs, etc. plus the hundreds of songs. The music doesn't count against the 20gb.
My wife uses the KK exclusively.
Looks like the A1 is up on the Lenovo site, but at $229 for the 2GB model. The 16GB is $250.

The magic $199 price has me looking for a table to add as a remote control & some light couch surfing, emailing and occasional travel use. I like the fact that the Fire is dual core, but think the sd card, cameras and gps would be nice to have.

What are the chances of an internal SD in the Fire?
There's bound to be a moderately simple way for Amazon to flash the thing, and I doubt it would take long to replicate once it's released.

I saw that too... other colors were available at the time as well, now it is only Black or White.
Also, the employee discount is only $10, which seems odd, so that means $239 for me - but I am still not sold on it at that price. If I could have gotten the discount on the lower spec one priced @ $199, I prob would have bit.
Estimated ship date is 11/8, but the rep I am chatting with now claims it will ship before then.
He has also stated that it does not have Gorilla Glass (which I think I read elsewhere in this thread that it has).
ETA: the rep I am talking too also says that the A1 ships with android 3.1... and just offered it to me for $219.
ETA2: he backtracked on the 3.1, and is also unable to confirm the release of 2.3

So I have had my Nook Color for about a year now. My wife had one and I decided I wanted one to root. I have been running with it rooted and got rather comfortable with it, I am stuck on Android I admit. Of course now I am having issues with the latest rooting so I am thinking "Hmm new Nook out maybe I should consider it"
So I am asking the community what is the real differences?
I know I could go online and read through 100 reviews all by different people who spend all their days with gadgets and I have no clue if they play with it the same way I do, and I am fairly certain they aren't going to hack it like I am.
So what do you think? Is it just a slightly updated Nook Color or is there more? What is making you excited that you couldn't nicely do with a rooted Nook Color? What do think will be lost in the transition? Also how long do you think it will take until there is a simple rooting solution?
Totally based on specs, the big differences are more internal memory (16GB vs. 8GB) and more CPU power (dual-core and faster clock speed). Oh, and I think the Nook Tablet does have a mic which is interesting if for no other reason than voice recognition-based input.
The screen size is the same, though I've read several articles saying the new screen is pretty gorgeous. I don't know if it's the same screen (the one on the Nook Color is no slacker!) and this is the first time some people have seen it, or if it's an improved display.
I have a TouchPad running CM7 and I believe it has the same dual-core CPU as the Nook Tablet (if not the same, it's very similar), and I can say that there's a significant difference between the two in terms of fluidity. Things scroll smoother, load faster, render faster, etc. I would assume the Nook Tablet would be similar.
So in the end it depends on what you do with your Nook. If you're primarily reading books on it and playing Angry Birds, you're not going to see much of a difference most likely. I'm pretty sure the browser is going to be MUCH smoother on the Nook Tablet, though, as is the overall experience.
I remember reading that the Nook Color will also be getting the same 1.4 stock firmware update that the Nook Tablet will have, so if you're a rooted stock guy, that's a good thing, and even if you're not it may mean an updated kernel and/or drivers for a smoother experience on the Nook Color similar to what happened when 1.2 was released.
So ultimately it comes down to whether a smoother experience on what will otherwise be similar hardware (physical dimensions and appearance, not internals) and software is worth $250 to you.
I've looked at the Nook Color and Nook Tablet side by side.
In my opinion the overclocked, rooted Nook Color is excellent.
Aside from the increased memory, microphone and faster processor, there isn't enough difference to warrant "side" grading (Not enough difference for me to call it an 'upgrade') to the Nook Tablet.

Does anyone know if the Nook Tablet has Bluetooth?
IMO, if money is an issue, buy a refurb nook color. If you have a problem with refurb stuff and would rather have a new one, spend the extra 50 bucks on the nook tablet. Some beefier internals for the money and will be more futureproof.

Another consideration in my opinion is that ICS will come to the Tablet first. I have no inside info, it just makes sense that the devs will want to update the most advanced device first, unless of course there is no actual coding difference between the two.
The way pricing is dropping on the 10" tablets and with ICS coming I couldn't see paying $250 for a Nook Tablet that is a minor improvement over the rooted NC.
I recently picked up a new Xoom for $320 from BJ's that they were discontinuing, my recommendation is that if you can afford $250 to upgrade to the Nook Tablet throw in another $100 and go for one of the 10" tablets.
I got my Nook Tablet last night and have been using a rooted/CM7 Nook Color since launch, so to answer your questions:
1. It is *much* faster. Web browsing is light years faster, especially with sites that have a great deal of visual content.
2. Speaker is slightly better.
3. Has a microphone, which will be an answer to my Skype-based prayers.
4. Screen *is* better, but not enough better that I'd switch on that alone.
5. Rubberized bezel makes gripping a bit better.
6. Double the ram of the NC - will be important in later versions of Android.
7. 16gb storage...CAVEAT: you only get access to 1gb in stock rom. (rooting and CM7 or 8 will of course fix this)
8. It is noticeably lighter when the two are held at the same time.
The device appears to use the exact same charger/cable, and I have used them here interchangeably.
At the end of the day, it is the vastly increased speed that wins me over. Everything is faster from scrolling, to video playback (damn good), to web browsing. That said, I am *seriously* missing my CM7.
Thanks goldenu. Having someone compare side by side is very helpful. I think for me I do some browsing and such but usually I use it to access picture files in Dropbox. I don't think that it will specifically be worth the money for me to up grade. I have rerooted my NC and hopefully will not repeat the mistakes that kept killing it for me. But really the main question is how will the Nook Tablet handle porn?
There is always a problem being responsible with your money but loving gadgets. Maybe I will win the lotto and I will just buy them all, maybe hang them all on the walls and create an app to make one giant touchscreen wallboard. Ok enough day dreaming and silly ideas
But what if one has neither? The NC has just gone back to $199, but there's some money involved in rooting and upclocking--if a 4gb SD or whatever isn't on hand. Which would you buy if not full geek capable, but not too dumb to follow good rebuild instructions? That $199 is looking good all over again, but I'm $poor.

So root it!!!! lol. Seriously though has anyone checked to see if CWM SD card will still work, if so I'd imagine its filesystem is still the same.

NC vs NC Tablet
I do not have or tried a NC Tablet. It sounds good....but if you want just a GREAT e-reader w/loads of Apps (Google Mkt), both B&N & Kindle, Flash 10.1, access to internet, great screen, ......No money? Buy a referb NC for $100+, then buy a N2A card for $35 and have fun. I bought a NC new for $147 (1 year ago, during one of theirB&B specials, + got 5% off by using a cash back CC, then got a N2A card and i'm in hog heaven.. Even bought my wife a refurb and N2A....same thing. GREAT "E-Reader" w/lots of goodies.

It does, but it is not activated on the nook interface.
I think it will be activated once we get a custom ROM for the NT.
My question is:
Does it still boot first from the MicroSD card?
I have no desire to root or run from internal memory any android OS, I absolutely love the un-brickable nature of the Nook Color.
I know off the bat an sd-install isn't happening, but if it boots from sd first there's nothing stopping it from eventually happening.
The un-brickable nature of the sd boot first option is the biggest draw for me, from a developer standpoint it makes a fantastic playground where you can explore whatever you want without consequence.
Having a device with better hardware specs will make development of ICS and forward software much nicer.

Yes, but so far it appears that the bootloader is locked down and will only accept signed images.
It it still very early in the game and only a couple people have poked at the bootloader so far so there is still hope that something can be achieved, but it's definitely a different set of problems than the Color ever had. No one has been able to root it yet either so that doesn't help either. I don't doubt that there are a number of very intelligent and determined people who are interested in the challenge though

Sooner or later we'll crack it open, as long as boot first from SD was worked into the model the rest is just a matter of time.

Roxors of NC's from B&N are $149 now, plus the $35 for the card you have to order is $184 plus shipping.
You can get a fully rooted NC off Craigs List for $170 all day long. I talked a guy down to $100 because he tried to dump a 3rd party power brick on me. Picked up a B&N brick, (and spare cable), for $27. Put the lame 2G PNY he had in it in my Fuze, put the Fuzes 8 in my phone, put my phones Sandisk 16 class 4 in the NC, made sure 8+1 works and haven't looked back. VV0o7!

Rooted Nook vs. Nook Tablet
Hey Guys,
I just bought a new NT Saturday, it's still in the box. I've been reading a few post and I'm not sure but everyone seems to be having more fun with the NC. I went to get the NC originally but I'm a sucker for latest and greatest. I'm still not sure if it was the best choice. And oh yeah, I get one shot at this, the wife says " Make a choice and stick with it." Do you think the NT will receive the same attention as it's older brother. I'm the kind of user that likes my gadgets to do all that they can. Thanks in advance for any replies.
Considering picking one up used for $120 or less (BTW, any deals better than the $135 certified pre-owned on B&N's site would be appreciated). I've considered loads of other tablets (mostly 7"), but fact is, I don't want to spend much, at least not on the tablet itself.
Anyway, at $120 or less, is it worth picking up, or should I look at something else? The things that draw me to the Nook Color are price (obviously), screen type/quality (not super glossy = awesome), USB OTG (considering plugging in a keyboard and using it for notes), Bluetooth (for headphones), and support/dev community.
My main uses would be reading books/comics, watching videos (nothing high-res), and possibly taking notes as mentioned earlier; there'd be very light gaming, as anything more serious would be reserved to an Xperia Play when I get one later. I doubt I'd install much just to try and keep it running as smooth as possible.
Expandable memory is nice, but not necessary, and I could live without either USB OTG or Bluetooth if the other was present. Camera/GPS/etc. definitely isn't necessary. Don't care for dual-core and whatnot as I know I won't really use/need the power.
Also, quick question about the Nook Color - are there any major issues left with CM7 for it, or is it basically complete? And how is CM9 in comparison (at the moment)?
nookcolor is a great tablet for $130 (give or take in price) but im ruuning cm7.1 for months now with no bugs or problems at all, it is a very stable rom. Screen is very nice, not to bright or to dull.
I got mine new for around $120 too. It is a great value although it does not have camera or other peripheral options.

The Nook Color has an exquisite screen, and it's better than the Kindle Fire (which I also own). Also, the Nook Tablet screen is exactly the same. It's the right resolution and sharpness. The iPad 3 is probably too much, especially since it runs very hot and eats the battery.
Even if you don't want to root or replace the ROM on your Nook Color, it's still a great tablet with a screen that is better than any other.

Forgot to update, ended up getting one for $100 in great condition on Craigslist. Immediately popped in a 32GB microSD and loaded CM7.2, lowered the screen density to 120, and I love it.
Definitely go with the Nook Color
I bought it when it was originally priced at $250. I live in Canada and drove down to the States to pick it up since BN doesn't ship to Canada. Even with the release of newer tablets, I'd buy another Nook Color over the others simply because it's the best bang for the buck.
I use it for my commute -- reading PDF books, listening to MP3s, watching videos, and the occasional game.
FWIW, I've owned an Ipad, Ipad2, and Blackberry Playbook. However, I couldn't justify the $400-600 price tag and sold them.
CM 7.2 is very functional, assuming you can live with the fact that apps won't recognize it as a full-on tablet. Within that limitation, it does everything just fine that you'd expect. The only shortcoming on your list is bluetooth support, as ranges can be limited.
At anything below $150, I'd says it's definitely worth a buy. You can blow that much with a night on the town, and have nothing but a headache and a strange rash to show for it.
Just to let everyone know that for some reason (good or bad), CM7.2-RC1 KANG on my NC is last FOREVER
I don't even know I should smile or not. It has been left idle (with virtually no use, screen off) for a WEEK and still has roughly 65% left in the tank.
Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed my NC for some time and still continue to do so (as I already own it and it's just good enough to still do what I need, namely play around with new OS code ala CM9).
That said, even at $199.00, it's way slow compared to the competitions products at the same price ranges. NT is much better but doesn't even have BlueTooth at all, from my understanding and shown in it's tear down.
This means that if you need BT, albiet with a less than 10 inch range, the NC is probably the only "eReader" with BT using CM7 or CM9 at that range.
If you are thinking of the tape for gaming? Don't, it's opengl is good enough to entice you with some titles running, but it'll be lag city once there is enough onscreen action.
Thinking of it for Video? Semi-don't. Sure it's IPS screen will impress, but 720P video will not be 100% smooth and it doesn't have the video processing to do anything higher. Pretty much 480P res when you use NetFlix.
Can't buy new? While you can get a cheap NC off of Ebay, keep an eye out for several of the top end earlier generation tabs as the new ones entice users to upgrade.

Yeah, Bluetooth was one of those things I just can't live without, even with the limited range. I definitely wouldn't have picked it up for any more than $100 (I would have just gotten the new NT if it wasn't much more expensive). Video hasn't disappointed me - standard/non-HD video is good enough for me and plays just fine. As for gaming, I intend to get an Xperia Play to use exclusively as a gaming device and just use that - although I may skip it at this point, as I have plenty of PC games, and the tablet is taking up a lot of the free time I had previously.
And I don't mind the lack of tablet apps on CM7 - I find CM9 a bit too sluggish to consider the switch at least for now.
