[Q] Does Google books work on rooted nook touch - Nook Touch General

I have tried to search but did not find an answer.
Thank you.

Google Books
Yes it does.

I've had some issues with it. Most of them can be resolved by switching to 'View Original Pages', then move forward a few pages and then reselect 'reflow text'.

Always worked for me...

Works intermittently for me

That's worked for older books for me, but not for newer books, like Fight Club. I bought that one yesterday for example, and it worked fine initially, but opening it today it just hangs on the loading screen with the rotating array of circles. This is with the newly named Google Play app.
Any other suggestion?
Thanks!
NST rooted with Minimal Touch manual root method.
Working apps:
Gmail
Market
Mantano
Google Play (sometimes, see above)
Opera Mini
Nonworking apps (for me)
QuickOffice Pro (opens but just flashes and goes back to initial screen when attempting anything)
Aldiko (stopped working after first few times, just flashes and goes to home screen)
Jorte (just flashes and goes to home screen)

It works but its pretty hard to use cause of the page switch thing IMO.
Does anyone know a way to make Google (Play) Books work with our side buttons?

Working for new books? Hmm, I'm also getting the spinning circles. Looking at 'Manage My Books' in menu, it's showing it's got about 30% downloaded, then hung. That's for all books attempted to be downloaded.
And, aye, this is since it's Play Books (though only just started to download, not sure if it worked before then).
Even manually hitting the sync option, it flickers but no extra downloaded, and can't read 1st page, still goes to the spinning circle.
Pinned, unpinned, still can't read them.

To clarify, when I say newer books, I mean that books like Fight Club don't have a scan of the original text included. So there aren't the "Original Pages"/"Flowing Text" choices in Menu. Flipping between those two options did work for me to view titles like "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" and "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" etc.
Looking in Manage My Books, all of the titles, classic and new, working and not, appear to be fully downloaded.

That did it thanks! menu/original instead of flowing and it's readable. Going back to Flowing just spins. Very happy to have this working.

Problems...
Having serious problems reading "new" books using google books (play?)...
I just get the sinning swirly thing. There are no options to "view original pages" since it is a pure ebook...not a converted scan.
Kind of frustrated with it, since I just got moneyball for .27 and am stuck reading it on my phone! Ha ha.
Anyone figure this one out for the "new" kind of ebooks?
P.S. Tried installing an older google books .apk that I found floating around the Internets...no dice same problem.

I'm also seeing the same problem with Google Play Books. I cant actually read any of them. Just stuck on a page with the swirling circle in the middle.

Same here, if I try to open a book I get the spinning symbols. Aldiko won't start for me now after running it once successfully.
I was able to "View Original Pages" by doing the following:
1.) Press 'n" button (I have this mapped to the B&N toolbar).
2.) Press "settings" on B&N toolbar
(I remapped this in "Nook Touch Tools" to be a Menu key)
3.) Clicking the "Original pages" button in the Google Play Books menu that appears.
You can also use Button Savior to get to the menu key from within Google PB.
No solution for newer, non scanned books though.

Yeah it's kind of hopeless it seems. I've been using the tried and tested Python scripts floating around that remove the DRM and then copy that over to my NSE.
If you must download the books on the device, the process for getting other DRM'd ePubs should still work. I've done a video showing it for Kobo (before they fixed it)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rcPfJwGjfk
The process works for Google Books as well. Download Aldiko (or Overdrive, or whatever authorizes you with Adobe DRM), register, go to the Google Books store on your browser (with a Desktop agent), find your book, download the ePub, tell it to open the file in Aldiko. Should work.
Its not the Google bookstore app, and you won't get synced pages, but it's a workaround.

RSS Feeds On Pocket PC

Can someone recommend the best *freeware* solution for RSS feeds on the Today screen?
As far as I know there are not any freeware rss readers for the today screen. There are freeware RSS readers though and you will find them at www.pocketpcfreewares.com
A rss reader for the today screen thats only $5 is PocketRSS find it at - http://www.happyjackroad.com/AtomicDB/pocketpc/pocketRSS/pocketRSS.asp
hope that helps

It's web based, but it's got a nice UI.

Thanks for the suggestions! 1-2tje, how did you get the feeds to display the title of the RSS feed and then the content underneath it?
Just a question about pRSS Reader (i'm new in the rss world).
In the "Site Manager" when you edit a site there is an option called "Automatically cache enclosures". What this mode does?

Some RSS feeds contain additional data e.g. podcasts. When you switch on the "automatically cache enclosures" mode, pRSS reader downloads these enclosures so that you can play them directly on your Wizard. This is a great function but it is only recommended when you have a flat free internet subscription or acces to a wifi-network!!!
1-2tje thanx for the reply!
But i got a major issue with pRSS Reader. First time when i installed it, i soft reseted the device and then the touch screen wasn't working. After that i did a hard reset. I thought maybe it was a conflict with another application.
So, after the hard reset i installed it alone. But same problem, after installation and soft reset the touch screen wasn't working again.
1-2tje, just want to sat thanks for the link.
pRSS reader today issues
I downloaded and installed the pRSS reader, everything seems to be working fine apart from the fact that the today screen only displays the number of unread items nothing else. Within the reader itself, there seems to be no options on configuring the today screen display. How can I get the feeds to flash on the Today Screen? Many thanks in advance

I'm running the newest version of prssreader (1.3.1) and I haven't been able to get it to cycle the actual feeds themselves - as opposed to cycling through each site and telling you how many new feeds you have. Any help or would I have to download 1.2?
CNN RSS Feed Expensive
The RSS feeds cycle just fine on my Wizard, RSS websites and feeds cycle automatically.
one word of warning CNN news feed sucked up 500K of my GPRS bandwith in the space of a couple of minutes. I suggest BBC RSS feeds instead.
I had issues with pRSS. Screen lockouts and it would not autoupdate unless i opened the main program.
How new is the lastest version? I am not sure if i was using that one or a previous one.
As for PocketRSS, the main issue is that it will only update either all feeds or none. I wanted to have the BBC headlines which i had my my todays screen updating only, and only update things like engadget. It does not cache images either, which is a pain when using GPRS.
I have tried quite a few RSS readers (Egress is ok too, but not free). The biggest problem with most is the space that take up on the today screen of the small Wizard screen. PocketRSS is probably the best in this respect and you can configure the max/min height etc.
I ended up having to use two RSS apps. One for all the feeds i like to read, and PocketRSS with only one feed (BBC headlines for my today screen).
I use newspanel that comes free when you get weatherpanel.
i think its better than anything out there. www.marsware.net
I use pRSSreader and think its very good.
Only problem I have on the Wizard is adding new feeds. Does anyone know if anything makes it possible to select an RSS icon whilst browsing the web on my Wizard and have pRSSreader pick it up (like in firefox)?
In case it makes it easier for anyone, I would suggest installing the firefox OPML export extension
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2625/
which allows you to export your livemarks to a .opml file then this can be imported into pRSSreader
pRSS fails
pRSS has stopped working, it seems that it will not update the feeds after about the first or second time, I could manually start an update from the main program but this has now also stopped.
I guess I will look around for another RSS program with today pluggin.
I have try Egress and Prss and I could never get them to auto update.

[GUIDE] How to install Thumb Keyboard or Swiftkey Tablet X on Kindle Fire

Some people reporting having difficult installing Thumb Keyboard on the Kindle Fire, but I was desperate to get it to work and I finally did! This is how I did it, it's not very complicated. Like everything, this assumes that you have root access.
I used aruangra's very helpful instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1364543
1. Install Nook Color Tools http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=868366 in order to switch keyboard (as Amazon removed that option)
2. Install Thumb Keyboard, but no need to launch
3. Use ES file explore (with Root feature and RW mount enabled in the advanced setting) or use Root Explorer to copy the keyboard .apk file from /data/app to /system/app
4. Make sure that the permissions for the apk in /system/app is Read/Write for owner, and it's "Read only" for everyone else
5. Copy the file in /data/data/com.beansoft.keyboardplus/lib/ to /system/lib (thanks Jmalto) or it could be located in /data/data/com.beansoft.keyboardplus/com.beansoft.keyboardplus/lib/ (thanks toonakan)
6. Reboot device
7. Launch Nook Color and you should see the following. If you don't see this. You did something wrong... sorry try starting over
{

8. It is now installed! Enjoy! You now have a split keyboard on the Kindle Fire!
You can follow the similar steps to get SwiftKey Tablet X working. Except for step 5, copy the file from /data/data/com.touchtype.swiftkey.tablet.full/lib (or something similar). Otherwise, the steps are pretty much the same.
I followed instructions to the letter. Launched Nookcolor tools selected choose keyboard and it showed Thumb Keyboard as an option but it FCs. I tried moving vs. copying in your instructions and it still FC'd. Did you use NookColor .1 or .2? I used .2 and moved into system/app as recommended in the instructions.
--Update: /data/data/com.beansoft.keyboardplus/lib/ was actually /data/data/com.beansoft.keyboardplus/com.beansoft.keyboardplus/lib/ in my version 4.3.4
Thanks for the post! I am super excited to have this keyboard.
No problem! I'm glad that it worked
nook Color app critical? Normally I just long press a typable area and it pops up the keyboard choices.
Also tablet X worked for me without moving any lib files around.
I don't think that you need to use Nook Color, you can do as you say and long press any text input and choose your input method there. I got the keyboard to work with Nook Color, so that's just how I happen to described the steps.
Thank you, was missing my thumb keyboard.
I'm curious what the thumb keyboard looks like in portrait mode? I use that about 60% of the time.
Image of Thumb Keyboard Portrait on Kindle Fire
Bought the program... works pretty good. Image include of portrait mode.
One minor gripe is the minimize feature... If you press and hold the configuration key, you can then slide over and minimize the keyboard. Would be nice to have minimize as the default rather than configure but I don't see how to do that.
An alternative is that is is supposed to minimize if you swipe down, however I can't get that to work. Swiping up, brings up the configuration menu's though.

Sweet! Thumb keyboard works great, thanks.
Nice summary but one Minor nit...
I'd read this thread on my Transformer and came back once I had my Fire in hand to find it again. I'd already added a few keyboards but remembered the mention of the NookColor Tools apk and that sounded much handier than editing the settings.db or trying to get a long click to take in a text entry field to change the keyboard. But when I did a search on the forum I couldn't find this thread because item 1) in the directions forgot the word "Tools" when describing the app.

Any way to keep the menu bar visible while using SwiftKey (or any of the other keyboards). I only tried SwiftKey.
Great job with everyone for getting alternate keyboards working. Has anyone tried getting Swype onto the Fire? I've been using Swype on my phone for so long now that I can't go back to regular keyboards (tried both STX and TK).

This works for Graffiti if you are a stylus fan...like me
Anyone know if we can get the Honeycomb version of Swype somehow? That would be a.m.a.z.i.n.g.
How do you uninstall keyboards? I downloaded a version of swiftkey tablet x that doesn't minimize when I swipe down.
I can confirm this process works with Google PinYin inputmethod 1.4
Addition steps to get Google PinYin working.
First, I used a sideloaded app from a HTC Sensation
I installed the app from my sdcard and it installed in /data/app called com.google.android.inputmethod.pinyin-1.apk and I copied to /system/app then set the correct permissions.
copy both files located in /data/data/com.google.android.inputmethod.pinyin/lib/ to /system/lib/

Trouble Minimizing Swiftkey Keyboard?
For what it's worth, (and you'll see similar frustrations in other threads), the problems with minimizing the Swiftkey keyboard seem to be resolved by using the phone version, rather than Swiftkey Tablet X. And while that solves one problem another arises: once you've installed both or either via the helpful guide at the beginning of this thread, their icons disappear from the Apps Carousel. (Well, mine did.) You can still open them by going through the market, which isn't great but at least works. Anyway, hope that helps. If anyone has any idea why their icons disappear, I'd love to hear.
Works However
Works however, on every reboot I have to reinstall the keyboards otherwise they force close. Is this how it is or there's a solution?

These are all new ones that were added directly to Chrome, none were synced. I've clicked on all of them numerous times in an attempt to get it to grab the images, but to no avail.
Anyone find a solution? I am also having this problem. The widget looks terrible without the thumbnails. Out of about 25 bookmarks, my widget only displays one thumbnail (Google News)
mine stopped grabbing screenshots also. anyone can help?
I am also experiencing this issue. Anyone find a solution yet?
I have tried all sorts of things to get the thumbnails working, such as clicking on them in the widget, browsing manually to the sites in chrome etc.
After much messing I finally had all my thumbnails on the widget.
When I turned my nexus on later, all but two of them had blanked again.
So... 4.1.2 is here and this still seems broken. Has ne1 discovered why some bookmarks create thumbnails and others don't?
Still broken in 4.2.1. I am relatively new to Android, do common things just stay broken forever?
Hi,
I am also having this problem...this has been happening since I got my first nexus 7...i am on my third one now. It also happens on my galaxy s2...it's so odd that there is no fix this...Is it just me, or do the generic thumbnail icons look like Mortal Kombat signs?
Clearing the browsing history has solved this problem for me.
1) Open a new tab in your Chrome app and press the menu button on your Android device to access History.
2) Select 'Clear Browsing Data' at the bottom of your screen.
3) Only select 'Clear browsing history' and press Clear. You do not need to clear your cache, cookies, saved passwords, or autofill data.
4) Exit out of Chrome and also kill Chrome's application process. On most Android devices, you can do this by long pressing the home button to bring up a list of active apps or task manager.
5) All bookmark thumbnails on your widget should now be clear. If not, then enter and exit a bookmark folder on your widget. If you do not have folders, then open and close Chrome. Basically you need to refresh the screen. If your old thumbnails have not cleared, repeat step 4.
6) Now rebuild your bookmark thumbnails by visting each bookmark from INSIDE Chrome. Visiting bookmarks directly from the widget will NOT work. Open a new tab and press the menu button on your Android device to access Bookmarks. Visit a bookmark and allow the page to load completely. Press the menu Button again to access Bookmarks and repeat as needed.
About 22 to 24 thumbnails will be created assuming after you cleared the History, you only visited your bookmarked pages. After a certain thumbnail cache limit is reached within Chrome, it will stop generating thumbnails for your widget.
Through many tests I've come to determine that Chrome is creating thumbnails of pages in your History regardless of the page being a bookmark. So if you visit 20 non-bookmarked websites, and then 10 bookmarks, only the first few bookmarks' thumbnails will be created on the widget. However if you revisit one of the non-bookmarked website and bookmark it, then you will see it on the widget with a thumbnail.
I hope this works for other people and that my explanation was helpful.
THANKS A LOT IT WORKS
You're a genius
I set my mother up with android by getting her a phone and two tablets. She only knows how to use the bookmark widget (full size of home screen, single page). Hopefully the chrome devs can fix their shiet within another year or two

Just figured I'd save everyone some frustration when it comes to Dead Trigger 2. Unfortunately since it's not available on Google Play even with the xposed mod, it has to be sideloaded from another Android device. A tegra based device specifically. But even then the apk will refuse to install. After taking a look at the apk's androidmanifest.xml file I found it requires the Google Maps system library. After editing these permissions out and repacking the apk it installed fine and the game works perfectly. As with the original Dead Trigger you'll need a keyboard in order to properly map the controls on first run.

You need to use a regular USB keyboard, not a wireless one, and press "enter" on the numpad on the far right of the keyboard. That will get you past the main menu, once you have started playing the first level press "esc" then use the keyboard's arrow keys and the "enter" button again to navigate the options menu so you can remap the controls for the OUYA.

well it sorta worked lol, needs some more modding to work without needing a hardwired keyboard.I did run into where after you do the tutorial missions It asked to give it a username and password. I typed in my username just fine but for some reason when it goes to password i cant type anything in...even with the wired keyboard plugged in, same issue as before I can click on anything nor type anything in....>_> ill stick to the first dead trigger since it lets me SHOOT MY OWN GUN lol instead of this auto fire crap.
Don't give up so easily. Many of the issues you've run into have been well documented and solved on a thread in the unofficial OUYA forums.
http://ouyaforum.com/showthread.php?7314-Dead-Trigger-2
Also, you can enable manual fire in the options menu.
The bug you are running into is one I am familiar with. Uninstalling and re-installing the apk causes this strange bug where it won't allow you to put your username in even with the usb keyboard. The only solution i've found to get around that is Dead Trigger 2 does recognize the MOGA series of controllers for that menu, allowing you to click on and enter your user information. Here's how I explained it in the OUYA forums thread.
LightyKD and patrickjd2000, i've figured out a work around for your situation. I encountered the exact same thing myself and after trying everything I could think of I used a Moga controller since Dead Trigger 2 was optimized for it and it brought up the text entry box whenever I clicked on it. The game is looking for specific keybindings for that text box thing which is weird. I guess worse comes to worst you could go buy a moga controller at walmart and then return it immediately afterwards.
One important thing I should mention, is if you have it installed and it's working fine, DO NOT uninstall, use directory bind, or mess with the apk in anyway. This will cause the bug that LightyKD, patrickjd2000, and myself encountered and you will need a moga controller to get it working.

It's far from perfect, but once you deal with the controller bindings and load a cloudsave past the tutorials Dead Trigger 2 is completely playable. I'm almost at the end of the Africa campaign myself.
I got the game running just fine.
Only issues I've got is how to pick up items that are ready from the middle table.
Also, how to use the health boost (cross under the gun icon top right on screen) while playing.
Play it more on my nexus 7 atm. because of this.
zurien,
In regards to picking up items from the table, there are two ways to do it. Once you've unlocked all the shops and the table gets upgraded to 6 squares instead of the initial 3, then you'll be able to select items from the table using the controller.
Personally what I do is use the same account as my Nexus 7 and pick up the items on there then load up the game on my OUYA. Kind of a pain but it works well enough due to everything going through the cloud.
Also for health boost, I just assigned the Item 1 button to d-pad up and item 2 to d-pad down. D-pad up lets me use the health boost. Can't seem to find a button binding for item 3 though.
I may look at fixing some of these issues in future updates but no promises, i've been trying to learn enough about Unity3D to get Deadzone working as well and it's absolutely exhausting.
Thanks for the reply.
Will test binding to the dpad.
Also play a bit more
Can I ask how did you add it to the play section?

Sure! Look about halfway down the page on here where it says "Developing with the ODK" https://devs.ouya.tv/developers/docs/setup
updated to app version v0.02.2 and changed cover image.
if you're updating from a previous version the apk will install over either of the previous versions, and you will also need to use the new obb file included in v3
it work fine some bugs here and there but nothing so important...sometimes i get stuck after selected an item on the table and cursor disappear...but i restart the game and it work again

[Q] Lag after low memory

Hi all. My question is at the bottom if you want to skip the rant.
Maybe this might help someone in someway. For those experiencing lag that just want a solution, or for those who want to find why this happen maybe they can replicate the problem.
So these are the things I did that I think caused the problem.
1st) load the 32gig internal to almost full... I think it was down to about 900mb of free space.
2nd) I delete a few empty folders like the "video" and "Music" folders. I am not 100% if there were any hidden file cause mine is not root to be able to see those hidden files.
so after all this, N10 was running very slow. Even displaying the HOME SCREEN was lagging. I thought maybe that 900mb is too low, so I started to delete my files. But despite having 14gig of free space, it still lag. All the app takes about 30sec to 1min to load, including chrome browser and android Setting. Shutdown the tablet and boot it back up still didn't fix the problem.
After many search on here, nobody seem to have a solution for this. The lag was too much, time for backup and reset.
Backup time wasn't easy either. I wanted to copy all folders and files to my PC (USB cable connection), but with the select all it started to copy and stop along the way. No err msg, the copy just stop like it's done but I see not all folders were copied. Had to do manual copy. Just copy things I THINK are important. Especially the device ID that I learned from my dead A500.
And I made screen shot of my app list. Titanium refuse to backup without root.
The reset took about 5mins. After seeing the dead android icon hundreds of time on my A500, I was afraid but the android icon on this N10 reset kept going and so was the status bar below it. All was done and N10 is like new again. SUPER FAST....but empty. Use my screen shots as guide to reinstall all the apps I want and skip the one I no longer want. Disable many bloat-wares.
Disabled apps
===================
Gmail - I hate the conversation view but can't disable. Use the Email app instead.
Google Korean keyboard - I don't know Korean maybe I'll learn later.. haha
Google Pinyin
Google play Magazines
Google+
Hangouts
iWnn IME
iWnnIME Keyboard (White)
Keep
Movie Studio
TalkBack
Wallet
App that I add and find very useful are
=================
Android Weather - the widget is very well displayed and can resize on the screen.
ASTRO File Manager - Luv the app but need to find a way to turn off the "Recent open"
Battery Monitor Widget - Luv the app and the widget too can be customize to display exactly what I want
Best Screen Filter - I prefer an app that can invert the color for night time reading.. is there such an app?
BSPlayer FREE - play all the video format, I luv the VLC on PC but the one for Android is not as good. This BS come closer
Power Toggles - awesome widget. :victory:
QuickPic - Love how it doesn't crop the thumbnail to square. But I notice when deleting pics it's much slower than the OEM Gallery app.
Volume in Notification - exactly what it said... instead of using the physical button which at times I have no idea in which corner to look for it.

==================================
Now finally for my question. My N10 is awesome right now, anyway I can CLONE this so if I have problems in the future I can wipe it clean and put back this CLONE in this PERFECT state? :good:
Any recommendation to improve things also appreciated....... like make it easier to read at night.
PS: sorry for the long rant.

Hi,
First of all, the low memory issue already happened to me, I also backed up and then formatted it, it was one of the best things I ever done to it IMHO . I installed CM11 and now it's booting in ≈20sec and it's faster than ever.
For the lag in the launcher I recommend installing a third party one. I'm using NOVA launcher and it never disappointed me. Also I personally like some other apps over the ones you are using. So I think I'll share it too, as you may find it useful .
ASTRO --> FX File Manager
BSPlayer Free --> MX Video Player
QuickPic --> Google+ Photos / Stock Gallery App
Widgets --> Beautiful Widgets / HD Widgets

Now for your question!! If you don't mind unlocking the bootloader, you can flash a recovery like TWRP and backup your device system, data, etc. Also you will be able to easily factory reset and clear cache (it's also a great thing to do when your device is too slow).
For the widgets you can backup it with NOVA Launcher .

Sounds like TRIM was running to free up space from the deleted files. It will cause lag.

What does it do and how long for it to do it with 14gig of free space to free? I thought there might be something managing memory in the back so I let it sit for more than 2 days, still lag.
How much is little free space anyway?
XxLordxX did give some ways to backup my current setup, but I want a simple "clone" way instead of all these backup and reinstall. Is there such a way as clone?
