I am looking to use some modified Nook Colors for a business purpose. I would like for the wireless capabilities to be completely disabled as they will be used for mostly survey purposes and I don't want people getting on the internet and such. I will be using CM7 as this is quite polished at this point. Is there an easy way to completely disable the ability to turn on the wifi and bluetooth radios? I was hoping for something as easy as deleting a driver file or something else that the device needs to turn these things on.
Thanks.
I use mine as a point-of-sales system, and I sometimes want all wireless function off, so the battery will last a whole business day, and I use a widget that you can download for free. Any child proofing app would work. You can limit the use of the device extremely easily.

You can try removing /system/etc/wifi...

When using the Wireless Tether, Barnacle, and even the Verizon Tether/Easy Switch hack, the data connection just stops and turns itself off. Losing the 3G connection. Why is this happening? I can forget about trying to use a torrent program because that kills the 3G connection immediately. It seems to happen more when the battery is less than 70%. On my old TP2 the HTC Wifi router worked almost flawlessly. It also happens sometimes when using Pandora after a song is done the 3G is gone and I have to turn the screen on to get the connection back. Anyone know what's happening? Is Verizon limiting my data because I use more than average? Is there a way to mask it like the TP2?
Does it always turn off when your screen goes off?

Not always, but it has more of a chance when the screen is off. Like right now I'm keeping the screen on and it's struggling to keep the 3G on. I'm pretty sure it's not because of my power settings either.
I am a newbe but loss of 3g is a known bug they are supposed to be correcting. Don't know if this helps
THIS DRIVES ME NUTZ!!! glad its not only me.
Yeah. I don't even bother with wifi any more. Same exact problem as you guys. I just use easy tether. Hate having to plug in but at least I get a connection.

Okay, this is a long shot. I'm talking about me standing in California, firing a BB gun up in the air and hoping it hits you in New York kind of long shot, but the my sister (on a Samsung Vibrant - 2.1) kept losing her connection when on Barnacle Tether until she set her Wifi sleep policy to Never.
Again, a LOOONNNNNG shot but hell if you're desperate enough maybe it'd be worth it?
Ehh I think the BB missed me in Boston The problem happens the most when flooding the connection with data requests. If I am using the connection for light web surfing it's ok even with the screen off. For instance a torrent program being open, or having multiple tabs open on a browser. Why can a crappy WM phone keep up the workload but the all-powerful Android can't?
This is really more of a generic Android issue, but since I have a Vibrant I figured I'd post here. I've noticed that when connected to wifi, if the Wifi sleep policy is set to 'Never', then my battery is incredible. But, sometimes, I leave a wifi zone, and in this situation, the wifi drains the battery like there's no tomorrow, constantly searching for a known network. I'd rather just leave wifi on so that I don't need to think about.
What I'd like to do is have some service monitor the wifi connection, and set the wifi sleep policy to never if I'm connected to wifi. If not connected, set it to 'When screen turns off'. This way I get the best combination while still having the ability to have wifi enabled all the time.
Does anyone know of something that already can do this? Or is it something that I should investigate writing myself? I'm certainly not opposed to developing it myself, but I'd rather not reinvent the wheel.
In response to myself, it wouldn't even need to poll the wifi connectivity. Android could just notify the service when the connectivity changed. I don't know if it's possible for a service or user app to change system preferences. Anyone know?
Take a look at the XDA "superpower" and "tasker" in the market. The superpower app has screen off profiles and some other nice features and tasker is very customizable.

Thanks for the suggestion, I just went ahead and wrote my own utility:

i just purchased an CPO 2009 Acura TL with the tech package, it has the ability to use my phones data plan for stuff (AcuraLink), and when it was trying to connect to my phone, it was failing.
im not sure, but can our phones sync/share/exchange the network access via bluetooth? my car has bluetooth set up, where i just turn it on and it accesses it without a problem, just wondering why it wont sync up the AcuraLink stuff.
thanks in advance for any help.
I'd imagine you need a USB connection to use your phones internet? Just my thoughts not sure

You doing wifi hotspot? Maybe you have to pay the extra money to tether...
He's trying to share internet through BT. It's not the same as WiFi hotspot. AFAIK, the feature isn't supported by default in the OS and/or in Sense overlay, you might need an app (Barnacle or one of those) to share internet over BT.
Sounds like you want blue tooth tethering. I'm pretty sure it's possible to do with our phones. I don't remember if I did it with a specific ROM though or if I just used an app for it. I feel like some roms might have it built in, I just don't remember which since I never use it.
Try out Barnacle or Wifi tether though, if it was an app that let me do it then I'm pretty sure it was one of those. I don't think either of those is on the market btw, so you'll have to search for them.
Update: Zipsnet ICS has it btw, and it seems to be functioning properly for me. Thinking back, I'm pretty sure alot of the roms I've used have it available. It's under the tethering settings.

Hey people!
I've been developing Android apps for about 4 months now, so I'm still pretty new. There are two apps I am currently working on, and I'm stuck at a similar point in both of them - connecting and sending data to another device wirelessly. In one, I would like to transfer strings (specifically strings of data I've collected from the accelerometer) from the device to a computer via wifi. In the other app, I would like to connect two devices and send the GPS data to each other, so each knows where the other is.
I've done a lot of research, but I'm still unclear what the best way to go about this is. I've seen people suggesting the use of servers for others who were trying to do something similar, but I have no idea how to even start setting that up. From what I've seen, the Socket Android class appears to be what I should use, but I really don't understand how it works. It looks like I connect to a device by providing the IP address, but I don't understand how the other device will receive the data....or really how it works at all lol. Am I on the right track? If someone could give me some explanations/suggestions/guidance I would be very appreciative. Thanks!
I suggest you to download some example then.try to run them

I'm looking for an app to monitor data usage by any other device tethered to my phone. Basically it is to monitor how much data my son is using either from his phone or when he connects his PlayStation. I would also like to see what I am using from my laptop.
I am aware I can view this from settings on my phone but it lumps all data together. I would like to see each individual device connected at one time while preferably seeing each of those devices current bandwidth draw.
Any recommendations are helpful. Thanks.

Data usage -> scroll to WiFi hotspot. That's how much has been used.
Side note; one feature missing from a lot of ROMs is see connected users and option to kick from network.

On Beans PureNexus ROM now. Would like an app that shows individual connections as I said. Thanks for the reply though.
