Google has pissed me off to no end with this ICS update fiasco. To add insult to injury, they're completely ignoring everyone that is asking about it. Sadly, I know they don't give a ****.
I'm sick of having to **** with flashing custom ROMs and kernels to get the latest and greatest. Then flashing something else because X rom is smoother than Y rom, or A kernel is better than B kernel, etc, etc, ad nauseum.
No disrespect to developers that spend a ridiculous amount of time building these ROMs, but it is just extremely unfortunate that the consumers have to be the ones hacking and tweaking code to get **** to work right or get the newest updates to the OS. Google doesn't give a **** because they pawned it off as open source and there are a thousand different Android devices.
This is the last time I ever buy one of their flagship phones. Fool me once...

Just as bad as Apple fanboys.
EDIT: My love for Android and my preference for it over anything else for all the many reasons I've liked it has completely blinded me to the fact that the way Google handles the operating system is complete and total crap.
Imagine how pissed off you fellow NS4G owners would be if there weren't developers out there -- developers that don't even work for Google and do this **** in their spare time because they enjoy it -- willing to take the time to build a ROM from source.
Google: Hey, Nexus S owners... here's some ICS! No update for Nexus One!
Nexus S Owners: Yay!
Nexus S 4G Owners: WTF?!?! Where's our update?
Google: *crickets*
Not to mention others with phones that are just as powerful as the Nexus S 4G (or even more powerful) that won't get ICS. Who cares about them, right? They can just deal with it and buy a new phone, right? It's nonsense.
EDIT2: I bet just about anything that there will be no OTA update to ICS for the Nexus S 4G until after the Galaxy Nexus hits Sprint... if the phone even gets the official update at all. They want you to buy a new phone. They don't give a **** about the one you have now. Don't give me this "Google Wallet" BS.
I'm not understanding why anyone would be upset at this point about the official release. What is everyone expecting? It's going to be stripped down just like all of the first builds that came out offering little, more like none, of the features we have now. Let me go ahead and say that the official build will be a disappointment to anyone expecting anything other than flat vanilla and if that's what you want, a pure experience, there are builds out there now like that. The dev community here has always made whatever build that has come out tremendously better. Thankfully Google gave the devs here the opportunity to do this by releasing all the code, drivers, framework, so that we wouldn't have to wait around for these carriers to get their acts together and push out a release. So instead of waiting for an ota we have a fully functioning build, now. We are so far beyond what any ota is going to be like even now that by the time we actually get a ota it's going to be so poor. There is nothing a carrier has ever put out that has marveled what our devs have been able to accomplish. Enough of my rant. Enjoy waiting around for that ota and I'm going to get a new rom to play with and enjoy.

Yeah, what am I thinking? I mean, it's ridiculous that I think Google should take some pride in their operating system, have some respect for people that buy phones with their operating system on it, and give people what they want: the latest version, a smooth UI, stability, and good battery life.
Blaming carriers for slow updates is completely missing the point.
Give me ONE good reason why anyone with a Nexus S 4G, a Google flagship phone, should have to root it and flash an unofficial custom ROM in order to get the latest version of Android.

I'm not understanding what you are getting at? You think that the carrier, ota update, is going to be better than what we have now in anyway? This phone was launched with the latest version of what was available at the time. Technically we aren't even supposed to have a working version of ICS, per the carrier and that has nothing to do with Google. If anything Google gave a big finger to the carriers by releasing all the stuff needed to build ICS which in my opinion, is awesome.

This is EXACTLY what the problem is, but you're wrong about one thing... it has everything to do with Google. It is completely Google's fault. You can't possibly be that dense. Google is just as guilty as Sprint if not more so.

As far as any of us know Sprint could be sitting on a finished build as we speak. It has to go through Sprint before we even see it. Those ota's don't come from Google they come from Sprint to your phone. They have to be vetted and approved and have Sprints little visual or none visual tweaks added. It's all about Sprint. Google has no obligation to even drop this for our phone. They could have easily said we weren't getting ICS just like people that have the original neXus because our phone has been replaced by a newer version. So I am not understanding you blaming Google for anything as they have made ICS available to use way prior to any release. When the ota is released I guarantee there will not be much demand from people to actually put it on there phone other than to flash it, be disappointed, and flash a custom version.

This isn't a flagship phone anymore. It may be the only Google phone on Sprint but this isn't a flagship phone now by any means. When it was launched it had the latest and greatest OS on it at the time. Gingerbread 2.3.whatever. And you don't have to root your phone or anything else like that. You can wait. But I didn't get this phone because I wanted a stock phone. I got it, rooted it right out of the box, and have been happy ever since. If you want the latest and greatest stock version of ICS you can switch carriers and buy a Galaxy Nexus which is the new flagship Google phone, wait for Sprint to get the Galaxy, wait for Sprint to drop ICS for your phone, or do what most people do that buy neXus' and root it. But none of those you HAVE to do.
°•neXus S4G•°
Ditto, I agree that Google needs to update this phone. We shouldn't have to switch carriers or jump through hoops to get a dang update or have to do insane amounts of research to find out that the gsm version of the phone will update and the others will be last.
I also think people on Googles nads. Google needs to get it together

If its not out by end of this month, my epic is going to be sold on craigslist, or ill ***** at sprint until they call the cops or switch the phone out. Samsung is really getting on my last nerve. I don't give a **** if its the fastest phone out if it doesn't have the os that is about to be old again in a month. lol ive been through this before with sprint..took forever to release the 2.1 update for the hero..by the time the epic gets froyo the next version will probably be out..that really sucks to have such a high end device and always be one and two steps behind the lead os version
IN general no matter what OEM, it will take forever to get the update. Kind of the crappy thing about Android phones with so many consecutive releases. Google said they would slow down after this next release....

I just wish Sprint/Verizon/etc all just used a standardized Android, that way Google could roll out updates like any other Linux distribution. But NO, that'd be WAY too easy, it'd put tons of programmers out of a job because of how simple it would be.
Its all google fault for being too fast trying to achieve the best OS in the world.

Sent from my bathroom, with toilet paper.
I wouldn't expect it until December 1st at the earliest.
The November 11th is just the date it'll get released to carriers from Samsung.
Sprint still has to add their software, gimp it up, add a few bugs, and test it for weeks.
I like the Epic, but the 2.2 delay is a bit irritating.
Why is this so great?

Reasons:
1. Android Market Applications - As applications begin to adopt 2.2-only features, and Devs don't support 2.1, applications won't show up on Epics anymore. The reason Android fragmentation is dreaded.
2. Apps2SD - The Epic only has 512Mb of app storage. My phone is getting full....
3. ROM ports - Most ROMs are developed on 2.2 in other platforms. With a 2.2-supported kernel, ROM ports from other phones will be easier to create (as well as CM ROM, since CM is 2.2).
4. Adobe Flash support.
5. YouTube HD (2.2 only)
6. Dalvik JIT Compiler (speeds up applications _a lot_... this probably belongs at #1). We had 2.2 on the HTC Touch xv6900 since about June, huge performance boost.
So far this poll has a very small sample return. Nevertheless it is disconcerting to see that, as of this writing, well over 50 percent think Froyo will be deployed on the Epic in November.
This is amazing, since Samsung has only promised that Froyo would come to U.S. Galaxy S variants in general sometime before the end of the year, and Sprint has made no more optimistic a prediction.
If this poll shows anything, it is that many or most readers here are setting themselves up for a bitter disappointment. Expect a lot of rants around Nov. 30, when we probably will still be waiting.
We will get it when other phones start getting 2.3
Froyo's going to slow the browser down, just wait!
On the other hand, I am looking forward to some of the other features it brings... but it's really not going to make that much difference in the performance of the device. It'll get here eventually. Just because it's taking a while is not an excuse to sell your phone.
Meh. I can wait.

So I was thinking.....
With all the Nexus S rumors floating around I ad a thought. Why would Samsung put much effort into 2.2 when 2.3 is coming soon. Maybe we will skip over 2.2. Also I am hoping a Nexus S will allow us have have a good shot at getting a stock Android build or a stable cyanogenmod version because it will be based on Samsung hardware.
One can only hope, or maybe me thinking is not such a good thing after all.

Samsung's efforts are complete for the most part, regarding 2.2. They have released it to (all or most, no confirmation) Galaxy S carriers. It is now up to the carriers to accept (as has been done by several) or reject (which is usually the case with VZW).
We've, of course, gotten zero verification that VZW has received anything, but based purely on the fact that it is already *out* on other SGS devices, one can logically assume VZW is the one holding the process up at this point...again, as usual.
Sounds like buisness as usual for VZW. Reminds me of my good old BlackBerry storm.
the nexus S will likely be a much a different phone while being very similar, it will likely not use RFS filesystem as it is garbage, and it will be a GSM model, while one would question why put out froyo so late in the game to your flagship, what makes you think they could have gingerbread ready if froyo still isn't ready, im primly on the same boat as everyone else and am getting tired of being jerked around while older, slower, less selling phones receive an update that we can't even get a date on.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Why are people so upset about the Froyo delay? The Motorola Backflip that came out in March just got updated to 2.1. The Fascinate was released 2 months ago and shipped with what the Backflip was just upgraded to. It would be nice to have Froyo on the Fascinate, but is it really that big of a difference between 2.1 and 2.2 that people can't just be patient and wait for it?
I'm not 100% on this, but I don't think an upgrade from 2.1 to 2.3 can be done while completely skipping over 2.2. Not an OTA at least.
Actually most people think that if Nexus S is indeed Galaxy S that means that all Galaxy S will benefit, this is not true. Even if all other Galaxy S version receive 2.3 and fascinate doesn't, we can't do anything about 2.3 because the 2.3 kernal isn't here. OS and kernal are two different things. We've had OS sources for the longest time because it is released by Google, that doesn't mean anything if we don't have the working kernal. Devs tried to build 2.1 kernal from the ground in the past with Droid Milestone(?) but that was hell and no one would even try to do that ever again.
So stop with Nexus S = Galaxy S. Even if that is true, unless it is exactly same as Fascinate, we won't benefit anything from that, just like we can't benefit from Internation version, Vibrant, Epic 4G, and Captivate Galaxy S. We need specific "Fascinate" kernal code.
You are exactly right. We couldnt have gingerbread for the exact same reason we can't have froyo now. Think about. I think the fascinate is doomed. Thank God for our good devs, they can keep us up to date, til LTE, At which point, im out!!!
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I agree with ksizzle.. I'm starting to think this phone is doomed
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I wouldnt say its doomed at all . like dude said , its only been two months . Yeah other carriers have it already and vzw is notorious for things like this... but give it a little more . Im probably the most impatient guy around here , i mean the ONLY reason i care at all about it is so development picks up on it . I could care less about playing videos in a browser without an app haha .
I know there is a little more than flash .But there isnt really anything WRONG with 2.1 . Just lack of development ... and even with that said , new kernals are popping up , new roms ,etc . I think this phone is far from dead. i just think we are really impatient haha .
im def being pessimistic but i'm just getting flashbacks of having a blackberry tour last year and being on crackberry forums like wheres our update? and the tour being like the redheaded step child of verizons phones and i jus got deja vu w/ this delayed 2.2 situation...
and then its like gingerbread is coming out now, so there will b phones on 2.3 while we JUST get 2.2.... how long is it gonna take us to get 2.3. im fairly positive it won't b as timely as it should... so i kinda feel doomed lol... i love this phone but dam
while it may have only been two months since this phone came out froyo has been out since may 19, 2010 to be exact. That puts us at six no that behind the current OS, which In a week or 2 will be the old one. However, with that said, I think there are some things in store for everyone that will make this phone MUCH more enjoyable and hopefully we can get it soon.

Could mean the ATO goes out the end of this week and continues over the coming weeks, or it could mean the OTA will start in a few weeks.
But I'm happy to wait, we've got stuff to tide us over for now.

This is BS. Jan 6 they will announce Honeycomb/MotoTab while Nexus One owners are still waiting for 2.3 OTA?
So what is the true developer device? Nexus One? S? MotoTab for Honeycomb whether its 2.4 or 3.0?
They said the same thing about our OTA when they announced Froyo. I think was pushed about a month later.
I don't really care about the OTA but I'd like some updated drivers so AOSP would run smoothly.
I honestly expect more out of Google.
I mean, I do systems engineering and I totally understand what its like to develop firmware and software development, but this is google. Theyve got armies of engineers and talented people who I think are passionate of their product.
For them to jumble and bobble these dates, is this a case of internal politics between program teams, bad marketing strategy, or is google human like everybody else and cannot execute a software release cleanly and on time?
Take a look at CM. They don't promise dates and work their tails off to get you a stable release. And they're not getting at 10% pay raise across the board. Talk about passion (pun intended).
I would just like to know when they changed the statement that the N1 would get all future updates ahead of all other devices...
I would say that the delay will be like the one with Froyo. Every time a new build is tested, new bugs will emerge. It's frustrating, but they'll be working hard on it.

Then why was it always a Nexus One when Google was showing off Gingerbread? Or when we got that leaked video of the screen off animation? Or the other leaked videos? Always Nexus Ones.
I assume that it wasn't perfect yet and near the Nexus S release date all development was shifted to that to get rid of bugs there first, now it's time to go back and finish the Nexus One.

Well, this is the problem with being open, developing fast and the problem of fragmentation.
Frankly I was surprised and impressed when Rubin announced that Honeycomb will run on both phones and tablets, implementation of panes will be different per device, but ultimately both form factors will share the underlying framework.
That being said, it does seem that the general strategy is to create a mobile OS across multiple form factors and use cases.
If that is the case, what is the true "google experience"? Nexus? the tablet? a new developer device?
I dont think its been stated explicitly but the beauty of Android is how quickly its evolved due to its disruptive nature. 500 dollars is well spent if the product gains functionality by software updates over the course of time it is used. If you think about it, wouldn't the nexus line of phones be theoretically depreciate the least for a product that is considered an expense?
Thus the excitement/impatience for the latest and greatest.
Maybe Google secretly hates everyone still using an N1 and their righteous outrage at not having everything yesterday. Maybe Google gave Samsung gingerbread exclusivity until 2011. Didn't the Droid get a fair bit of fanfare with it's 2.0 exclusivity? 5 days into 2010 and we were introduced to the N1 and 2.1.
I have to imagine it would have been a pain to develop on a phone while Samsung was still monkeying around with the GPS and then there's the video evidence of gingerbread on the N1. My guess is that gingerbread is probably nicely baked for our consumption and just waiting on the calendar.
So why not ever give us precise dates? It's not like OTA updates happen in a day, it's taken weeks for updates to reach me in Canada (when I don't do it manually). Google has told us it's coming and coming soon at that. That's a hell of a lot more than the users of any other phone (barring 1) can say.
People on sites like this will ***** if it's not the right colour, if it doesn't make toast for them, if they don't know when they're getting it down to the minute. Google may as well just let us *****, there's nothing they can do about it.
I'd encourage patience but if you're browsing XDA patience is not in your nature.
If it means so much for all of you to be first on the list for updates - GO BUY A NEXUS S AND SHUT THE HELL UP.
Otherwise, acknowledge your phone is a year old and quit being unrealistic FFS, half of you must be ten years old - if that's the case, do what you did the first time; go grab mommy or daddy's credit card and order a Nexus S.

At this point, we just have to laugh about it, right? Then I read articles like this and it makes me remember the angry "WTF " feeling... but what's the point in being pissed off. It'll get here when it gets here, right?
We don't need Verizon anymore. The Mesmerize's code is compatible enough with the Fasicnate that we don't need an official release... plus, their source is already out. Hell, we've been using their leaked kernels for a while now (EB16 and EC10 are both mez kernels).
Us Continuum users are still on 2.1

Adryn said he will work on Continuum, but not sure when.
Well, not to lessen the Continuum state, but you guys do have that funky Ticker thing with all of it's own settings I can actually understand something like that holding up the Verizon/Samsung ability to push out an update. But the Fascinate?
It's just mind-blowing that two multi-billion dollar companies are such a miserable failure in this department. The Froyo SDK came out over 10 months ago. Some team, some where, should've lost their jobs ages ago and been replaced with competent individuals.
Ok, back to laughing
True.. its gotten to the point of being so ridiculous that I really do almost laugh out loud at the whole thing these days. Still though I do feel extremely frustrated at the fact that the two big companies involved just seem to refuse to give a straight answer regarding an update - if an update is coming out for sure.. ETA.. status.. etc.. That part of it just drives me crazy.
Very true. I am waiting and hoping for ASOP or MIUI to be fully functional now.
So why the hell did Samsung drop this phone, essentially, and all the other phones are fine? This is a great phone.
Samsung Fascinate, Verizon
EB01 Superclean 2.4
Kenesis' TransMyst GBKB (EPIIIIIC)
Mob87's Honeycomb Theme
Stock Kernel
If you didn't notice the froyo versions that leaked have all had their own issues and caveats. Knowing Verizon, they would never allow a release of flawed software so I refuse to be angry about the lack of an official release. Those of us knowledgeable enough and willing to tolerate have been using it for months and with Kaos, Adryn, JT and our other AMAZING Fascinate devs we will have GB, MIUI and AOSP as well as all the wicked kernels we could possibly want ahead of anything we would ever get from sammy. I always put my faith in these ambitious and innovative people over some billion dollar team that never faces us.

I gotta say I released a bit of a chuckle when I saw on Twitter that Samsung released Froyo for the Mesmerize the other day. I was like, "The MESMERIZE? REALLY?"
But oh well.

I'm not one to correct, but wasn't the next to last official VZW release the one with the 911 puzzle lock bug? VZW has always been a pain in the butt for updates, but never, NEVER, this nad. IMO, this all falls on Samsung and their incompetence. I get done what I need done just fine from my SC 2.9.2 and stopped waiting for anything official a long time ago. All owning the fascinatehad done is solidify the fact that Sammy won't get another dime of mine. What actually makes me laugh is the BS that Samsung PR puts on here to attempt to make users happy.
From what I understand, Samsung has already released the update to Verizon, but it didn't have Bing integrated...so then Verizon's one guy in some back room closet has to integrate Bing before they can release it. Of course, any dev on here could do that in a day....
I wouldn't go stock if they did release it. I am digging Launcher Pro on SC 2.9.2 Voodoo. I have my wifi hotspot and google and NO VZW crap. Everything on my phone is working better than before and I have no lag, waits or FC. I honestly don't mind the UI of touchwiz but the implementation is piss poor in the quality department and I don't expect that to change with the next rev. I'm a happy man going to save a few duckets for Adryn he is a deserving soul.
Yep I'm with Joey - at this point even if they do come out with an official release, I dont think I could go back to a stock 'bloat rom' after trying out a rooted phone with a fast cool SC-Voodoo setup developed here by the dev community. AWESOME!
running DR v3 voodoo
EC10v
launcher pro plus
loaded the apk's that i like
battery life is good / to GREAT
Samsung / Verizon = i will be voting with my money when it comes time to upgrading my phone & service
because of leaks i am currently happy with my Fascinate
Imo I would say this definetly falls on samsung and verizon not giving the ok on an update that would have its own issues. Ive never been a fan of samsungs touch wiz interface, but I think this is a really good example of phone makers tweaks on android really effecting users getting to experience there devices as they should. Sammy has always been little slow on updates to there phones. Love there displays and there TVs are the best. I just wish they would pay as much attention to devices already launched as they do pushing out new devices. Seeing that droid x is on the verge of getting gingerbread it makes me sick thinking that fascinate is still on froyo. I keep.secretly hoping that thsy will surprise us all and just skip froyo with the vzw update and push out gingerbread for it. If they do.end up putting a froyo update out for the fascinate I guess a gingerbread update would be out of the question because who knows how lonh that would take
Samsung , has a bunch of bs programers, and poor project management. If our devs out code theirs, why haven't they been hired? Because, they'd have to eat humble pie. My guess, is that if you paid close enough attention, you find that samsung borrowed quite a bit of code from our devs. Why else would they "leak" code? They are having problems solving their own, self made hacks of miss placed code and purpose built convolutedness, so why not get someone else to fix it for free.
Just my 2¢

And now the Intercept. Against, I don't know if it's Verizon or Samsung, but at this rate I'm leaning towards Verizon being the weak link here.
Must... maintain... laughing...
At this stage, it really doesn't much matter who's to blame. We'll never know whole truth and nothing but the truth. All I can say is TY to XDA and their team!!

Far as I've seen, it's looking like they're being held back by Verizon and Bing stupidity as much as Samsung amd Verizon.

Just got done reading a petition about motorola's locked bootloader.
While sifting through the comments people made, pleading for motorola to remove their locks. I could only think of how so many members ridicule samsung. does everyone realize that they (samsung) gave us a great phone? That its almost unbrickable.. Sure froyo took a long time, but they admitted publicly that getting froyo out was a disaster and that they will take measures to make sure it won't happen again. And they even attempted to reach out to the community through samsungjohn.. even if it was just an attempt to calm the community, it shows samsung supports the community.. Or at the very least that they care about what we think and say.. Samsung could be a lot more like motorola, and completely overlook the needs and desires of the small percentage of users that our communities consist of.
my next phone will be a sgs2

Yea. With htc following Motorola's path of locking down the bootloader, seems like samsung is one of the last to be developer friendly.

... unless they lock that too.
Not to many people realize how special this phone will be when we can overclock to 1.6ghz, that was mention in engadget i think. But this phone rocks with root and superclean. But the majority of people dont really take the time to explore android phones and all they offer. For example businessmen, my father who is in the insurance business used his droid x for almost everything. My brother rooted it and set up everything in a much more user friendly way. But just when everyone gets upset about no froyo (official) for fascinate, they forget the beauty of android, and thats its able to be edited by developers and that its open source. We arent supposed to have froyo yet most likely every fascinate owner on this forum has froyo.

Not to nitpick... but I'd like to just add a little bit of an aside here. There has been no official release of Froyo, which means that according to Samsung and Verizon, we shouldn't have it. (of course, some one will speak up and say "leaked builds are just a sneaky way that samsung gets free public beta testing." To that I say "maybe. But I doubt it.")
Not only that, but most of the cool mods in the dev/themes section are done to precompiled files that have been decompiled, modded, then recompiled, which takes massive amounts of time, and is a dirty process that leaves behind dead code and mismatched signatures. People are jumping through massive hoops to do something because we don't have the source code to edit it directly. Saying that the stock ROM is open, is like saying a jailbroken iPhone is open. It's only "open" because people have poured countless hours working around the restrictions of an already compiled system, using tools that took countless hours to make.
Both of these issues are actually a major gray area of the law, and if a pesky legal team got bored, it's hard to tell what kind of trouble they might be able to stir up (especially when the judicial system is all about $$).
Even after we do get the source code (which we still don't have), there are still lots of binary "blobs" of data that are already compiled, reducing the amount of control we actually have over the hardware devices and proprietary elements of the stock rom.
So Android is mostly open source, but Samsung is only as open as it wants to be. Their delay in releasing the source, bad coding, and use of proprietary code still sets them fairly in the realm of developer unfriendly. They just aren't as bad as some of the others.

I am forever grateful for the dev teams hours spent on this phone to give us something that we shouldnt have. And I agree, I think its all about the money for the phone manufacturers. The nice thing about android is that you dont pay to upgrade, but thats also their downfall because whats in it for samsung if they work hard and release something that is stable for our phones. Loyal customers which is true and a big part of their business. But for the most part, their client base is so huge, our whining doesnt even put a dent in there sales. Furthermore, Verizon doesn't care about releasing the official froyo update because they have you in a 2 year contract. And as bad as the the wait has been to get froyo, I would never switch carriers because ATT is worse IMO, but who knows now that they bought T-Mobile.

I've been debating getting a Bionic but in thinking more and more about it I have to agree with you. my next phone will be the Sgs2. I absolutely love my sgs even if we don't have an official froyo build, the great devs we have have me rocking a super clean voodoo that blows all my friends various moto, htc, etc devices out of the water.
Do I wish verizon and samsung pushed an official froyo build? Sure
will that lack of support stop me from getting my hands on the sgs2? Hell no.

+1 I agree totally!!
Pretty sure that I'm going for the sgs2 as well. Bottom line: the Fascinate has been the best smart phone I've ever owned (even as only eclair). I enjoy all the flashing of Roms and Kernels too. Its kinda made owning the phone worth it. In other words, not having official release but trying out these leaks is great fun! I'm not nearly as bent out of shape as some others are about the lack of support by Samsung/Verizon. Sure, it would be nice if they were better about software releases but I ain't losing any sleep over it.
