Sprint changed a policy again! - Networking

I have been contemplating going back to my et4g and been reading their thread this morning.
I just read a thread (can't post a link on mobile) that sprint will be changing their discount to just one line and charging 19.99 for the 2nd line.
This is grounds for etf free cancellation!! Just thought I give you all heads up as I haven't seen a thread in here about it.

Sprint employee discount change

I doubt a change to a discount program will allow a free etf.

yes this does allow you to end your contract. Been confirmed by many on Android Police.

It has been confirmed by sprint employees on xda as well that they have been informed to allow etf free cancellation. It is a breach in contractual agreement as the price is changed as well.

Well that's good. I still don't think you would be better off financially to switch to another carrier. I would hope people switch for better data speeds/phone choices or something because if you are doing it just to stick it to Sprint you will probably end up paying more anyway.
Tmboile's closest plan is $80 per month with 2gb data
Verizon's closest is $90 and with 450minutes and 2gb data
att is $90 I think for 3gb and 450 minutes...their website sucks( and they have a weird $30 unlimited messaging/data plan but it looks like that is more of a feature phone plan on not web access. Their normal 3gb with unlimited messaging is $50($20 +$30))
I am guessing most people get the best discount with Sprint so don't switch because you think it's going to be cheaper. Your best bet price-wise if you do switch is probably t-mobile if you get a good enough discount and if you want to put up with their coverage....(it's bad in my area anyway.)

It still gives you a chance to switch and I'm thinking about it. Big red has been on my radar for a while now and they have coverage here with LTE in tow. With my employee discount it will be cheaper than sprint.

I guess it depends on how much data you use. Big Red's data plans are Highway Robbery. Obviously none of us are grandfathered in on the other carriers' data (un)limits. Everyone else is faster where I am, but my speeds are more that sufficient for what I use my phone for. I left TMO for the unlimited data on Sprint, even though TMO's 3g blows 4g WiMax out of the water here.

I was excited when I first saw this and immediately rushed to Big Red's site for deals. Even though they were running a double data special it was still a huge rip off. As much as Sprint sucks the unlimited plan is really the only way I can go.

Although Sprint has the slowest speeds and coverage, the other carrier's are so much more expensive and just you guys wait, by 2013 Sprint will be better than ever with unlimited LTE plans, I have faith in Sprint

Called a second time to see how long I had to port my number before they turned off my line. That guy said he could only waive the ETF fee on one line, not both. Made him speak to the manager and correct himself also.
Is it just me or will they try to make you pay the fee any way they can?

They will try to get over.
When I first called the guy was like well if you cancel because of this we will give you a discount on your etf fee. I told him no and explained to him that sprint has changed our contractual agreement and thus it is now void. I will not pay any fee, he said ok your right.
Moral of the story have any information readily available when you want to get something done right the first time. All companies are crooks and only think about their bottom line.
I am leaving because I chose them because of my discount program through my wife's job. 25% off total bill, with the change my bill will go up by $7.00. Though $7.00 may be small in comparison to other carriers, good choice of phone and great coverage are 2 things sprint does not have so I will bite the bullet on cost and get what I pay for. Though Tmobile in my situation is the cheapest and best coverage in my area. But I may go back to att....

It won't apply to existing lines that already have a smartphone on them, but if you ever want to upgrade that BB (or even swap it out with an old smartphone sitting in your drawer) then you will get hit with the fee.

Of course you could argue that, but good luck winning that argument. It's a good thing they're still the cheapest around for what they offer.
bah, that article doesnt know anything about Sprint. SERO on the EPIC or EVO is till only $50/month for 500 minutes land line, everything else unlimited. No idea why that articles claims the minium smart phone price tag is now $79 at sprint.
Almost none of their customers are paying that.. heres some options:
1) Sero $50/month
2) hundreds of company discounts, ranging from 10% to 20% = $50-$65/month
3) family plans, per phone price ends up $25 to $60/month
4) EERP $70 + sign up with VP marketing discount, -$10 which is available to the public = $60/month
5) Virgin mobile, owned by sprint, 300 anytime to land line, unlimited everything else $25/month)
6) Boost mobile, owned by sprint (averaging $40 to $60/month)
In summary, Sprints average smart phone user is not paying anywhere close to $79/month, probably closer to $60 and that's for the highest end devices.

The problem with that is that the word soon is very subjective. What we consider to be soon may be different than what Sprint/Sammy considers to be soon.

Only if you activate or buy a new phone with sprint outside of the contract you already signed will you have to pay the $10 fee on top of the regular charge for true Unlimited Data. So if you have 5 phones which are all smart phones and 4 of them are Intercepts, and 1 is a Epic, you will not have to pay the extra $10x4 a month, cause you have already signed a contract stating your conditions. If you are already paying the fee, then nothing will change.

Yeah... no. Hell I don't even think the phone has ever actually been advertised as "2.2 Coming Soon!" Remember, "the guy at the Sprint store told me that 2.2 would be out in a week!" doesn't count as advertisement and is, in no way, shape, or form legally binding. They could probably never get 2.2 out the door and not have breached any agreements.
My favorite things about this change?
1) Those morons who decided to go after Sprint for that "unjust, completely hidden charge that they never agreed to" that was clearly explained to them 100 times and clearly outlined in the contract that they signed for the phone they could have not chosen might as well just forfeit that little case of theirs.
2) Since we already pay the $10 fee, this in no way affects us.
3) Now I get to watch a bunch of idiots run around saying "WTF? People other than us are getting charged an extra 10 dollars? I'm going to Verizon to pay $20 more a month just to show those evil-doers! To hell with the fact that this in no way affects me!"
just something else for people to ***** about. Sprint is the best bet for techies b/c you have unlimited data. not 2gb cap or whatever else those other companies are offering. Hell im sure everyone has seen tmobile uk now has a 500mb cap...thats super gimp

i just went on tmos site and saw 500 min + unlimited texting and data for $50.
if you go the off contract route you can get unlimited calling, text, and data for $70.
not bad. i believe the on contract plan throttles you off of hspa+/3g after 2GB and the off contract throttles you after 5GB. the $70 plan is pretty sweet if you buy a hspa+ $200-300 phone on ebay.
Good luck with your reception, T-Mobile has rather sparce reception here.
LOL, I was talking to a Sprint rep yesterday and I asked him "off the record" what kind've phone he uses (Evo) if it was rooted (it is, and he recognized my user name from here) and what he thought of Sprint basically telling the courts that said we can do whatever we want to our phones, knowingly voiding the warranty as is our choice, and he agreed... lol

I don't understand how your bill is that high!
1. My bill is roughly $75 a month for 450 Lan unlimited, though I have a corporate discount if 25%.
2. Root your phone for wireless tethering.
3. So that means for me even with two lines that's only $150 a month.
I could understand though if you don't use your phone often. I average 20gb a month so $75 a month for extreme data, over 6,000 texts, and a lot of calls is worth it to me.

My only gripe with Sprint is having to pay for "4g" when I have no hope of ever seeing 4g.
I am on sero and had to upgrade to sero premium to use the Evo...plus another $10/mo for "4g" data...which will likely reach my area a week after the apocalypse.
Went from $34/mo for 500/unlimited everything to $54 for the "privilege" of using the Evo. Ah well...still cheap as hell, i guess.

Sprint LTE

Sprint officially announced that its very first LTE tower cluster is now operational, thus marking yet another significant milestone in its Network Vision plan. The said tower array blankets the town of Kankakee, Illinois, which is located 60 miles south of Chicago. What Sprint also said is that field testing of its LTE infrastructure has been completed, meaning that the aggressive LTE rollout it announced earlier this year is still on track.

Heh, according to Sprint you are paying for the extra amount of data that smartphones use. Even though I thought my Palm Pre used a reasonable amount of data as well and that didn't have the surcharge. The iPhone 4 has no 4G and they pay the $10 too.

You must be on an old grandfathered plan, because this is what I see on the Sprint Blackberry page:http://shop2.sprint.com/en/stores/popups/blackberry_plan_details_popup.shtml
"Some important things to know about BlackBerry® smartphones
Plans for this phone require our $10/mo. Premium Data add-on charge in addition to one of the plans below."
And in smaller print about half way down the page it says
"Effective 1/30/11, monthly service plan rates for this phone increased to require the monthly $10 Premium Data add-on charge. Phone requirements: Certain phones require activation on a plan that includes data, other select plan or add-on. Premium Data Add-on: Smartphones include BlackBerry®, Android™, Windows® Mobile, Palm , Instinct® family of devices and other select devices."
There, I've run rings around you logically.

Anyone know if they still plan on pursuing wimax or if they plan to just go with lte and phase out wimax?
I'm concerned because I've barely ever gotten to use it and now its sounding like I never will.

To any one wanting the S3 on verizon read this.( Unlimited data ending)

They are going to KILL YOUR unlimited data like this: http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/16/verizon-cfo-says-grandfathered-unlimited-plans-on-the-way-out/
I think If I get this phone now it will be unlocked on AT&T.
Just wanted to give the 2 gig news.
Did I miss something or does that article not mention Galaxy SIII on Verizon whatsoever..?
Sent from my SGH-I777 using Tapatalk 2
It clearly mentioned Verizon and it's pertaining to those who would upgrade to the s3

I must not be reading the same article. This linked article doesn't mention GS3 ANYWHERE. ..its about unlimited data, data share, grandfathered customers and LTE.
I read it twice and it still doesn't mention the Galaxy SIII

Its right there, between the lines. Can't you see it! Geez!
This is for any one waiting for the S3 to come to verizon, but likely would not want to lose there unlimited. Just giving a head's up to them. I know most here are on AT&T like I am, but I wanted to give verizon user's a head's up so they can do what ever fit's there needs best.
Now I don't think verizon will get this phone, but some do and this is for them.

Haha.. dude, I'm not reading it again. It mentions 3G but no S3. Sorry. And its not even about the device its about the data plan and grandfathered 3G users being forced into a "shared" data plan with new LTE phones.
Did you read the article?
*edit* maybe I misunderstood the title of this thread. My bad.. you made it sound like it was article about Verizon getting the gs3, then after I read it it turned out to be an just article about data usage and grandfathered customers. Maybe the thread title could use a different title but meh.. that's just me.
Lol.. nice title edit!

Yeah, it's about the plans. You can't upgrade and keep the unlimited data but you can buy the phone full price and keep your grandfathered plan.

So are you saying that it is not worth trying to hold out for either the Razr HD or the SGS3 on Verizon in the event that you are sacrificing one last subsidized phone purchase for the next two years? I'm at a stand still here, because as long as I'm still able to retain my unlimited I wanna see if something comes out before the new plans come into place and I won't be able to keep it without paying full retail for one (course I'm gonna keep doing that as long as I can maintain my unlimited, And when they MAKE me change I will leave them immediately and never look back). However! I actually have a line on my account right now that still has a $100 2year loyalty discount attached. This is why it would be awesome to be able to hold off as long as I can to see if i could snag a Razr HD or SGS3 with that discount before I wont be able to use it.
Obviously my two main choices are the RAZR maxx and the Galaxy Nexus. I absolutely hate that the razr max has that weird resolution tho and no removable battery so I'm much more inclined to the Galaxy. What are your guys thoughts on this? My brother has the galaxy and i love its size and plenty of awesome roms to choose from which completely negate its typical bad ratings in battery life. This is coming from the HTC droid incredible and I was able to get a max of 36 hours on CM7 with incredikernal... mind you it has a weenie 1300mah battery... So I'm excited to finally get a 4g phone seeing the speeds it can produce!
On top of that im so sick of seeing people saying that it is impossible to use over 2g of data in a month with regular usage. I tested out this month on my 3g incredible using it as lil as I possibly could and still have gotten right about 3.2gb after only 18 days. This is with hardly any youtube at all approximately 18mb worth so far, and absolutely no wifi (if im paying for a service.. aka unlimited data, why bother using my wifi which can be throttled by my cable company as well for overuse.) With my family we currently use between 6-10gb per DAY.. of data on our home internet! So how are you possibly going to tell me 2gb is sufficient for phone data. Anyone who says that doesnt use their phone for anything it is capable of doing.. which makes me wonder... why have a SMARTPHONE when you dont use any of its features?
Verizon has been pushing it uses of several different apps and to be used on its network now.. and with phones having hd screens and 4g capability the usage is only going to continue to grow more and more. I could see myself easily capping over 10gb per month with a 4g enabled phone. seeing as how my average currently over the span of my 3g phone is sitting somewhere close to 5gb.
It is simply easy to rack up this kind of data use with it being usable pretty much anywhere and with the mobile hotspot feature being very useful on trips. So let me ask you.. how much do you think I'm going to want to use, and will use, when my speeds increase to 10mb/s+ from my current 3mb/s at the best it can get. I don't feel sorry for Verizon in the least, they have the infrastructure to handle a lot more then you think. I guarantee they have been showing profit gains every Q for the past 3 years with the huge expansion of smartphone growth.. they don't need to nickel and dime the hell out of us to give us unlimited data at a reasonable price. They simply choose to because the market is too stupid and will flock to them simply because they offer the best service. I pay them enough as it is for their "premium service" therefore they should offer me a "premium service" not an inferior one.
Nothing?
Verizon sucks...they will get the gs3 very late may be during holidays when the next nexus and other new round of high end devices release. Buy an international version and be on a GSM network and be happy
Edit: I have nothing aganist Verizon but in general all carries suck with their monopoly and control over phone manufactures.
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
Well I think they suck too for this and for them kicking and screeming trying to get out of replacing a BAD phone. I had too call them 10+ times just to get them to send me a "new" one and then the POS still did not work right intill they pushed an update. Even now it still loses 4G, but at lest I don't get 600kbs any more from 4G. There 3G= sprint and it sucks. H+ is not allways the best, but over all better for every thing - 1080p/720p video. ( Verizon's LTE falling back to 3G loading a web page laying on a table or upload hang and so on.)
I have both AT&T and Verizon unlimited data plan's and I would take AT&T any day of the week for data. voice, ok verizon you win becuase I can still make a call in the sticks if your pre-loaded app's did not kill the battery runing in the back or lock the screen up.
Verizon I hope you eat some cow, becuase the one line I have with you will be killed and odds are I will never come back.
I too think all carries suck with there price fixing and control, but verizon took 1st place on my most dis liked co list. (That I have had to deal with that is. Acer was #1, but at lest geting them to fix there crap DID NOT TAKE 10+ CALLS.)
yeah.. my plan has been without unlimited data plan because they got rid of the plan for whoever tries to add the data plan. I think they are discontinuing it even for the existing customers. Already expected that
They can have my unlimited data when they pry it from my cold, contract ending hands. I just blew my upgrade on a Nexus two weeks ago, coming from a Thunderbolt. Planning on ordering the S3 with an upgrade from another line. Once they start forcing people onto shared plans, I'll do whatever it takes to keep what I have. I use around 40 gigs a month lol
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I was going to do the same, but they have really limited LTE this month. the best speed I can get is 10mbs and that's at 1am! If your on the "list" and now I am on the list for using 4GB, I can only get .5mbs down load. yea for me

Very strange. I used 46 gigs last month and between 30-80 GB/month CONSISTENTLY since LTE came to my area around this time last year. No throttling, no warning, nothing. I get between 11 Mbps and 24 Mbps down depending on where I am and the time of day.

ive pre ordered and up'd my contract an additional 2 years, WITH unlimited data, so for two years i wont be loosing it and I will have sgs3..... have i missed the OP's point?
Only applies if you're updating from G3 phones!

This has probably been pointed out, but it ONLY applies if you're updating from a non-G4/LTE phone! I updated mine, the new one (which VerizonWireless now says "they made a mistake" and it won't be delivered for a month" - after collection several billion dollars to float for a month having originally stated it would ship on Wednesday for Thursday delivery ) still has unlimited data. I came "up" from a Moto Bionic, so I already had an unlimited G4/LTE data plan grandfathered from my Droid Incredible G3 plan when they still let you upgrade to G4 from G3 and keep unlimited data.
BOTTOM LINE: IF YOU HAD UNLIMITED DATA ON AN LTE PHONE, YOU STILL WILL HAVE UNLIMITED DATA!
^^I agree and I do not think that the "grandfather killer" has come into effect yet.

AT&T Family Shared Data

So I'm sure most of you are aware of this whole AT&T Data Sharing thats coming out near the end of august. I was just doing some math on the whole thing and had it confirmed by a representative on the phone...turns out, it makes no sense. Shocking.
For a family of 5 such as my situation, we have 4 smart phones and 1 non-smartphone.
As the charts shows (which I cant post since Im too new), it breaks down like this...
4GB
$70 base price
$40 / smartphone
$30 / normal phone
------------
$54 / smartphone
$44 / normal phone
6GB
$90 base price
$35 / smartphone
$30 / normal phone
-----------
$53 / smartphone
$48 / normal phone
10GB
$120 base price
$30 / smartphone
$30 / normal phone
-----------
$54 / smartphone
$54 / normal phone
Past that point it actually starts making sense and getting more expensive, but as you can see, why settle for less unless your the guy with a non-smartphone who gets screwed.

Thanks for sharing! Saw these earlier today, still ripoffs but at least ATT doesn't force you on them like VZW.
Prepaid is cheaper.

I'm not trying to gloat here, but this just makes my decision to add the 'unlimited data' package to my service, of which is no longer available for purchase, a notably smart one. Thank goodness for "grandfathered" things, such as is mine. Albeit, knowing AT&T's business practices, they'll probably figure a way to forcibly get me to buy into a data package eventually. But, for now, the thirty dollars is well worth it. However, I have heard rumors of AT&T throttling down bandwidth once users such as myself reach a certain monthly data usage amount.

For sure, I'm jealous of my friends who still rock unlimited data since I got in the smartphone game a little late.
I guess the good part of these shared plans is unlimited calling is included.
But does the shoe fit?
Run the numbers. It's not really made to reduce anybody's bill, but to add flexibility. Everybody on the new plan gets tethering, unlimited domestic minutes and texts. I'm curious to see how employer discounts will be affected. I'm a veteran and get a 15% discount off some parts on my plan. If it works out for me, great. If not, I'll stick with my current setup.

Just, sell the phones you get from them and get international ones. They see all of those as, non-smart, and unlim data is still there, for those. 10/mo too as far as I know.

Not even a week into this month. Rogers raider on $10 "non-smartphone" data plan
You don't get the HSPA+ speeds with the Media Net plans correct?
The new Family plans may offer flexibility but I'm pretty sure that the main point is the same as VZs, to make you pay more for data. You either jump up to a high dollar plan or you risk paying the pretty hefty new overage fees.
Man, their highest price tier is still more then the unlimited everything plan on sprint...man, so glad I'm not with true blue or big red, I'll keep sprinting away with my cheap phone bill

It should depend on whatever the phone is capable of which is usually not as fast as smartphones.
But yeah thats true and it seems like theyre playing it off as some great deal to those who dont read the fine print or bother comparing.
