Wifi Calling and Battery - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was wondering since when I am home and primarily using wifi instead of my 4G data, will using wifi calling save me on battery as well? I usually turn data off because I save a lot of power that way. On my nexus one I get about 5 days of use with 1 charge in Airplane mode.
Thanks in advance.

Yes wifi will use considerably less power across the board.

Always on mobile data

Do you guys leave this on or off? I left it on always on my HTC hero but it did drain the battery faster... its found in the wireless networks / mobile networks setting...

Yeah i'm a little confused too. Does this have to be checked to get the gmail pushed?
Yeah, I leave mine on unless I'm using wifi calling, in which case I can use wifi for data. You can turn it off if you wanna save battery life tho. It obviously means you can't use anything that uses data, like texts, emails, internet, maybe calls even.

why would this affect txts and calls? it isn't airplane mode...
If you uncheck mobile networks, then its pretty much airplane mode. If you'd like to save battery, then you can set the Network Mode to GSM only and uncheck the "always on mobile data" Will save quite a bit
-Cheers
EDIT: Apologies. The always on mobile data keeps a pretty constant connection with the network so downloading can happen faster. Since the connection to the network is already on and active, a download can be plopped in quite fast. It is unnecessary for data connections, but is helpful
FYI I just unchecked it and tested my GMAIL and I still get my e-mails pushed. Lets hope I get better battery life.
You will simply see a larger delay when you request the phone to pull data... also push services MAY function and may not...
You may only get gmail when you pick up your phone and use the data some other way... at which point the phone opens up the data connection and any information can flow over data.
I would doubt that the push server will be able to signal the phone to turn on data, so it may check periodically or only catch the push command if you have your data pipe open already (as described above).

[Q] Mytouch 3G using too much Data?

I have a MyTouch 3g and I was checking my data usage and since the beginning of the month I used over 247mbs of data whereas my brother has used less than 40 with the same phone. I'm normally connected to wifi, and the only app I use a lot that uses data is Facebook. Also when I check my data usage I see that my phone is using data while I'm asleep, anyone have any tips for using less data on my phone?
Turn it off while you're not using would be a good start, CM6 has a data on/off switch with the power control widget. Turning off sync would be another option, also found in the power control widget.

App to disable 4G connection???

This has frustrated me to no end. Does anybody know if there is an app that will switch from HSPDA to 2g? Preferably one I can set to a schedule? The WiFi calling app is the only one that seems to do this flawlessly, however it requires a WiFi connection.
When I am at work I do not use my phone for anything except phone calls and my calendar, so I do not have any need for 4 or even 3g coverage... And my phone just drains battery trying to establish these connections.
I've tried using APNdroid but it just force closes my phone process.
Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated. I'm running elite sense 2.6 if that matters at all.

So you want to keep 2g (edge) or no data whatsoever?

What ROM are you using?

[Q] Request to developers

well.. i would love if the developers could edit some thing in power save in their roms..
wifi gets off.. immediately after the screen is off... but .. cant we modify it such that..it get delayed..
or the settings get modified in such that.. wifi gets off when screen gets off..
when their is no uploading and downloading taking place..
Wifi should never be turned off when you're connected to a wifi network. If its not already set that way in wifi settings, change it.
What he said. Wifi uses a lot less battery then 3g does.

Massively increased battery duration

I'm guessing a lot of people on here know this already but I recently discovered how to massively increase my Moto X's battery duration. Namely by switching off Mobile Data, I can then go a full 14 hours only dropping down to around 75% by the end. So now as soon as I get into work or any place where I'm on Wifi I switch off mobile data.
Makes me wonder why having mobile data switched on is expending so much battery power?
If you wanna increase that even further, just turn the whole thing off. The battery will last for weeks.

He actually has a point, there's no point on being sarcastic over a good advice that should be logical by now.

Yes, turning off (necessary) features saves battery. This is not shocking.

It is not shocking but somehow people tend to forget the basics. And it is also unnecessary while on wifi, which is the case and the advice he spoke of.
And I'd go even further and set 3G only with wifi, lollipop tends to switch from wifi to LTE by itself very often.
I've heard of people suggesting switching off wifi when your not using it, but never mobile data. So i just thought it might be a suggestion some people might appreciate. Take it or leave it.
Plus wifi is doing the exact same funtion as mobile data when your connected to it, so your not losing any functionality.
If your rooted you can even get Tasker to do the switch automatically.
This actually doesn't work. The data radio goes I to sleep mode when WiFi is on. Its not just doing its own thing while wood is on.
Definitely working on WiFi enhances battery life enormously but didn't try switching off mobile data

How is this possible? When your wifi radio is connected, the data side is completely disconnected. This is even reported in your 'status'.
I see your point, but all I know is that it definitely is making a large difference for me.
One theory I attributed it with was that with Wifi and Mobile Data switched on the phone is getting a lot more Wake Locks (perhaps doubling up), which in turn could also possibly be preventing the phone going into a Deep Sleep. But as the Wakelock detector app doesn't work any more (unless your rooted), I can't verify this.
Gonna test this out!
The issue with turning off mobile data is that it will cause problems with sending and receiving MMS, you may also have problems with SMS as well.
My HTC Sensation was really good at basically putting the radio to sleep when on Wifi and only waking when needing to send or receive data that will only work over the cell network.

I don't disable mobile data, but I do use tasker to switch to 3G when I'm connected to wifi. The LTE radio uses a lot more battery in poor signal areas (like my apartment) and I have noticed it helps me go from about 3 hours of screen time to 4.5. I think the MMS issues are a good point and I feel like this solution is slightly more elegant because even with mobile data disabled, the phone is still holding an LTE signal. Ymmv, obviously

First you'll need root and this plugin (make sure to enable external access in the plugin app)
Basically, create a profile that runs whenever you connect to a network (you can leave it blank for all networks or press the search button to choose just your home network).
The entry task would basically wait 10 seconds and then run the plugin choosing wcdma/gsm (auto) as the network mode. Choose then to add an exit task which simply recalls the plugin and chooses the network mode as LTE, wcdma, gsm. You can even add an extra step to each task at the end which has tasker display a toast that you can have say LTE enabled or 3g mode only

SMS is sent over Voice channels. MMS still requires data.
I double checked and tested this on my Pure Edition on T-Mobile.
Disabled Wifi and Cellular Data
Sent a standard text message, it was received by the other party. Attempted to send a photo message, it was not able to send from my phone as well as the other party did not receive it. Though it did resend when data was enabled.
Tasker can't turn off mobile data since Lollipop update....
Any sugestions?

No one sends MMS messages now (apart from old people), since the advent of Whats app and the like, so its hardly a deal breaker.
