Running busted phone in emulator...? - G1 General

This is more of a question to see if it's possible cause it would be fun... but, is it possible to create a system image or some such thing to load your existing phone (all data, contacts, game info, everything) into an emulator?
To specify, in case it's needed, my broken phone is an HTC Dream (G1), rooted and tweaked (quite a lot), and it currently has Ginger Yoshi 2.3.1 I believe. I dropped it off a ladder and it basically won't do anything now. Boots (and I can get to the recovery screen), but won't actually function.
Anyway, kind of a hobby thing to stimulate conversation.

Is there a way to make a Nandroid backup and then to install your original ROM onto the emulator and restore the data?

Not that I know of. I haven't used the emulator much (only for basic app testing), but being that I've always restored from recovery, and I don't think there is a way to enter recovery using the emulator, it would seem impossible for me.

I can check it out, but does it have to have a USB connection to a device? Or can it use images? Say nandroid backups or something?

Wanna root. What all should I backup?

Hi.
I want to root my legend and Want to know what all data I will lose on my internal memory as I heard that rooting involves wipe of the phone.
So do I need to backup my apps, messages, contacts, before rooting ? And is there a software that will Do this job well ? (Have heard that this app called nandroid will do this job)

Use softroot using Universal Androot 1.6.2 beta 5
Install SuperUser from the market as well
Then get Titanium Backup and backup all your user apps and system settings (at least the green ones)
Nandroid is a full "ghost" like backup and isn't possible without root/recovery...
Hi, will softroot allow installation of apps2sd ?

Yes, see my post above...
Did the universal androot.
Got the superuser
and titanium backup... And clicked the 'problems' button and downloaded a patch.
However, when i tried deleting some software (which i am 100% sure it's not system, but bloatware), HTC shutsdown everything and force restart my phone...
Any other ideas? I love my ROM as it is (non-rooted) but hate the bloatware...
You can't change the content of your /system/app folder, not even rooted. Only in recovery mode and if you have a patched kernel. That is until S-OFF comes out, correct me if I'm wrong
Thanx Kwen. It worked after downloading the busybox.
Pls tell me what can I do with the soft root. Can I use Apps2Sd ?

[Q] Port backup from Hero to DesireHD?

Hi,
I currently own an HTC Hero, and will most likely be getting an HTC Desire HD.
Now, I have almost 150 apps on my Hero, and I really dread the hassle of re-installing and setting up everything to my liking. It has taken me almost a year to set this up the way I want it.
Would it be possible, using Titanium Backup, to make a backup of EVERYTHING possible on the Hero, and then switch the memorycard to the Desire HD and restore it there, maybe without the app settings? I am thinking that this could be a problem because of the different specs, but I do not know too much under-the-hood-stuff regarding Android.
I am hoping to not have to go through the market for that many downloads.
Any thoughts on this?
Kingkeld.
Market apps will automatically re-install when you sign in into your new phone. For the rest there is Titanium backup
I planned on doing the same, but doesn't Titanium require root?
I can't remember what it's like to not have root, the thought is scary
Try Android commander for the PC, Plug in your hero, goto application manager, select all the apps and click backup, then when you get your new phone selsct all the backed up apps and click install Hope it helps

It does need root that is correct but I'm sure, as stated there are other ways to backup apps. I'm not sure about if you have your apps on ext partition though. I wager root wont take long and then comes recovery roms and then customs... mmm custom
Thank you for the replys. I can not sleep.
Now we just need a root confirmation. Yes, the thought of owning an unrooted phone is scary. Not sure what to think of it. I hope it will not last long.
All I ask is root. I can wait for the custom ROMs. There will be plenty to play with.
You just need to pick your apps from /data/data, copy them over with adb, and do a fix_permissions
See?
OR chmod by hand

I used Titanium to migrate my app settings from Milestone to Nexus One, but they're on similar versions of Android and both are HDPI devices.
I can tell you that Market apps don't always reinstall automatically if you're going from one phone to another. In any case I suggest a fresh market install of your most important apps, and then restore their data by Titanium if necessary. If this causes a crash, wipe their data again. Less important apps, could just try restoring them directly. Run Titanium's Market Doctor when that's done.
I also suggest using apps like BookmarkSB, SMS Backup Restore, Call Log Backup Restore, etc to transfer those records. May work better than trying to Titanium restore data across different OS versions, and doesn't require root. Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

Will I lose nandroid backups if I get a replacement phone?

I am getting a replacement evo because of problems with my headphone Jack. My current phone is rooted and I have nandroid backups of my favorite roms and setups. My question is after getting my new phone (and rooting it of course) will my nandroid backups from the current phone that are on the SD card be able to be used or do I have to pretty much just start over?

You can use certain aspects of them.
But you obviously can't restore things like the Wimax information.
If you copy them from your current phone to your computer, then from your computer to the new one after it's rooted you'll still have them. It's good to always keep them on your computer anyways if you break or loose your phone or sd card.

Thanks.

op - pay a few bucks and get titanium backup (if you haven't it already). do a full back up (apps/app data and system data). if you decide to run the same rom you can do a full restore using titanium on the new phone. if you use a different rom, restore apps and data and some system backups only (i.e. bookmarks, wifi configs, bluetooth configs, sms/mms to name a few).
When you get your new phone, be sure to use the latest (2.2.1) version of Amon recovery, and back EVERYTHING up (including wimax!) with this done, you can always save yourself later if you run into problems.
If you *previously* used Amon, you'll want to take out the wimax.img's from the backup directories, otherwise you'll overwrite your new phone's wimax radio with the backup from the now defunct phone.
No no no do not use a nand backup from one evo to another you will copy your RSA keys to the new phone overwriting the new phones keys. If you have to ask you are probably not aware of what your rsa keys are or how to extract them. Just do a TI backup of the apps on the old phone and use it to restore apps and app data only.

Best advice ....don't over write your keys for the sake of settings which can be restored in other ways....

it has no effect on you this moment but if say in a month you get 4g in your area or you travel to an area that has 4g... you are basically SOL. the phone will never be able to use 4g once you lose your keys.
It jsut isnt worth completly killing yuor 4g to save you from a little work in resetting up your phone. For me the titanium back up method worked best. Witht he same rom there is no real issue restoring the system settings and apps and if yuo have the pro version it is easy and hassle free.
You can also edit your nandroid folder. Delete the images that you do not want, in this matter the wimax.img, and edit your nandroid.md5 to remove that particular entry. Then try your restore. You definitely would not want to restore a different phone's wimax.img though, so make sure it is removed.

Flashing a rom - saving everything.....

Ok so I'm planning on flashing a rom for the first time. I was just wondering if after running a full backup using Titatnium, if that saves all of the texts messages that I have right now? If it doesn't, is there a way to go about getting that done?
If you want to save your text messages, I recommend using mybackup pro (the free version will not let you restore data). If you can't pay for it, look up Applanet

First off, Jmoney47, please do not recommend that another user on here use Applanet. Warez and the like are not supported by XDA. Apps such as applanet are the reason there are virus' and malware on Android devices. If you truly want a paid app, then pay for it off of the market and support the developer who made it. =)
As for the original question:
I believe Titanium will save all of your data (sms and what not). i just switched ROMs and used titanium (among other things). so i'm so used to the switching process, I really can't recall all I do.
I recommend searching for SMS backup which is a free app
My Backup Root is free and backs up text. I couldn't figure out how to back up text using Titanium.

Also, Titanium Backup only backs up apps. Don't try to back up system data with it because it differs from ROM to ROM and can have serious consequences if you restore it with an incompatible one.
If you want a full backup, one you can restore after flashing a new ROM if something goes wrong, you need to make a nandroid backup using Clockwork Recovery.

I don't use rom manager, instead I use koush's droid X bootstrap. Which might be a dependancy for rom manager.
On a side note. I'm baffled by the fact that someone would come in a developers forum and recommend pirated software. Sad.

Manual restore of app and data from Titanium Backup?

After I flashed CM7 (after a full wipe) Titanium won't restore any apps or data. I made sure unknown sources was checked and made sure I had root and superuser running. I went to the online troubleshooting guide and followed the instructions to change the settings within the app also. Updated busybox and used fix permissions in Rom Manager and no luck. It worked fine on the nightly builds and worked great on Mikshift 1.0 and 1.1. I need to be able to restore my Battle.net authenticator on my phone for Warcraft but I need to be able to restore the data also or it won't work. Any ideas or insight on how to fix this issue or do a manual restore of the app and data would be great. I have the stock Rom and Mikshifts Roms backed up but I'd like to run CM7. Titanium works fine on the other roms and restores the apps and data like normal.

Are you running the Pro version of Ti Backup? If so, I read that it still has issues with CM7. Specifically, the batch one-click restore of apps+data isn't working. I read there is a setting somewhere to change it to a manual one-by-one app restore as a temporary workaround.
Titanium Backup>Menu>Prefrences>(Under Troubleshooting)App Processing Mode>Interactive Mode.
Try that and it should work...
I wondered if that was the problem, still not sure but nothings worked so far.

Only restores the app, I need the data so the app is sync'ed to Battle.nets servers like the original install or I can't log onto WOW with this rom running on my phone. A fresh install prompts you to sync all over again and the authenticator is useless if you haven't removed the old authenticator. I could removed the authenticator and reinstall it on the CM rom and then make another backup so I could use it across all the roms I already have saved (I like to jump around) but that's a lot of work.

If you made the backup with each app's data (it should, be default), it should be restored with data by default. I don't know why yours isn't doing that :/

The only only thing it'll do is restore in interactive mode which uses the stock android installer....so it only uses the apk file and doesn't pull any data with it. I've never has issues with titanium before on any device that couldn't easily be fixed. Still stumped lol. It does show a different version of busybox installed than all my other working versions show, and after using the busybox app from the market it still shows the old version. I've tried fresh installs of titanium and the CM7 rom and no luck. Guess I'll hold off and try to contact the developer or wait for updates. Shouldn't be long.

this is only an issue for the battle.net that puts a new serial with a new install. the Classic installer DOES restore data.
Once you have your battle.net restored the first time and it doesnt work, go back to Ti Backup, click restore and then choose Data only.
Should solve your problem. Please don't misinform others that Ti Backup doesn't work. It does, I promise, I use it often. It might appear that is only installing app, but it installs all data too (My angry birds better follow me!)

Sometimes TB just won't restore anything in CM7 if the backup was made in Sense. But backups made in CM7 work fine in Sense. Kind of weird. Had to manually restore data without TB, jesusice.

Are you sure you're using Interactive (Classic Android installer) for all of this. Before you mentioned that there was a circle that was spinning and not stopping.
If you haven't restarted since that, you have to go and kill the Ti Backup process before trying any of this. We'll get your problem solved don't worry.
I got it. I swear the only thing I did was swap an old 2gig sd card into the phone and made a new backup from my Mikshift rom then a fresh install of CM7. I installed an old version (couple weeks old) of Titanium from a backup I made with Astro. And it worked right off the bat. Still had to go over every app and install it and then the data but I can live with that. Sorry if I got fussy earlier, I'm just not used to getting stumped like that lol. You don't even need to do that second step.
While set to "Interactive mode", pick restore app + data. Once the plain-jane Android installer is done, CLICK DONE. Next, Titanium Backup will automatically restore that app's data, just like you told it to.
Unless this issue is specific to the "battle.net" app, this process has worked for me every time, with every app I've tried.
