Nexus s wanting to update to ICS from 2.3.4 - Nexus S General

Hello XDA
So I have a nexus s (model I9020, baseband: I9020XXKD1) that was just purchased here in Canada from WIND. It came with 2.3.4 and when I tried to update it to ICS using manual method, it failed. Then I realized, that I have to be on 2.3.6 in order to update to ICS. However, I am not able to find a guide that shows me how I can update to 2.3.6 from 2.3.4. My phone is completely stock and never been rooted and I don't plan on rooting either. Can someone please point me to a guide that would allow me to do this. I tried but failed to find anything reliable. Thanks everyone and sorry for my newbie-ness.. :$

Probably the reason why the manual update didn't work is because you are not rooted. I have the at&t version of the nexus and I went from 2.3.4 to ICS (CM9) without a problem. I did root to get ICS on my phone.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App

It had nothing to do with root, if he is talking about the OTA update. I guess that the reason you can't update is because you have 2.3.4.
you can update manually to 2.3.6 (you can find the link in one of the stickies), or maybe force update (*#*#2432546#*#*).

Everything is in this thread that you need.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063664

Just use the full rom, not the update package.

Why are you spamming this thread with a web site with instructions on rooting?

simple steps: download the update "2.3.4 to 2.3.6" (search this forum for the file), rename the zip to "update.zip", copy it to your devices root directory, boot into recovery mode (volume up + power), choose recovery, push volume up and power when the exclamation mark appears, choose "apply update from sd card", choose update.zip and confirm with power button. voila.

Dont see this posted before...Mods please merge with any existing thread as you see fit.

2) Turn on by holding down Power and the Trackball
3)Select Bootloader (Selection instructions on the top of screen)
4)Select recovery
5)An Android-Bot will come standing next to an open box

Only thing differnet was that on step 5, I got the android robot standing next to an "Exclamation mark in a triangle" (caution) icon. Simply pressed Power and Volume Up and got the option to install the update. click on update.zip. The phone will restart once and you will see the android outside a box, dont press anything.
Installed fine.]
Heres a thread in the Dev section:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=627533
Test results:
-Found that the total internal (app) memory is still 196MB and RAM is still 212MB, makes sense as the kernel is still .29, Have to wait for the next update I guess.
-No problems with any existing apps. (I did an Astro backup earlier anyway). Phone works fine too. (ATT EDGE)
-Multi touch works fine in the Maps app
-Looks like the Launcher2 FC bug is fixed, I could not reproduce the bug. (does not mean I'm leaving Home++ though )
Code:
Firmware version: 2.1-update1
Baseband version: 32.24.00.22U_4.03.00.21_2
Kernel Version: 2.6.29.01117-g4bc62c2
Build Number: ERE27
Thank You! Worked perfectly!
Worked great, thanks a lot! Does anyone know where to find the full changelog of this update? I can't seem to find one for the life of me. :s Thanks.
I didn't find one either.
Signature Verification Failed
I have a rooted Nexus One but no custom ROM installed on it. I pushed the Cyanogen Browser to gain Multi-Touch before the update came out. I downloaded the correct file and changed the name to update.zip on the top level of my SD card. I go into the booloader, then go to recovery, i get the android standing next to the exclamation mark and hit the buttom combination required. I select the update through SD card option and it starts then gives me a "signature verification failed" message. Any clue as to what I could do to apply the update?

MyTouch 3G will not download 1.6 OTA.

Hey guys, I recently unrooted my phone, which means I'm stuck on 1.5 for now. I went to check for updates, and the 1.6 update is there. However, every time I click download, it says downloading for just a second, then stops.
I've tried rebooting, using wifi, using 3G, and clicking download like crazy. I also tried finding the manual 1.6 update, but I couldn't. Any help?
EDIT: Nevermind, I found the manual update for 1.6. If anybody else needs it, go here.

This happened to me too at first.
Did you use a backup program to restore all your settings while still on 1.5? Data from 1.6 is in there and it prevents the update from taking. Do a factory data reset again and this time wait a day before using a backup program to restore any data. The update will come through in about a day.
During this time you can still download whatever you want from the market and it shouldn't affect anything.
thanks for the link. which file do i DL to get 1.6 on my original mytouch 3g
just used sappimg.nbh to get back to 1.5 in expectation of 2.2 dropping tomorrow
Here:
I found a mirror with 1.6 for the MT3G:
http : // and then type www . mediafire. com/?t3zlwdzzqqx
Sorry for the formatting... I'm not allowed to post links.
Don't forget to do the second 1.6 update (DRC92 -> DMD64)
You can find the file at the same link the OP gave.

This worked perfect for me, thanks for the post!
One question though, this considered a MANUAL update, right? Not an OTA update. Just asking because I'm trying to figure out if I can use the SPL Official method for updating to 2.2, posted in thread 807899.
Wondering if its safe to delete the second update.zip from my sd card? I went to delete it says "Delete failed- system restriction" and will this prevent me from receiving my 2.2 OTA update?
No it shouldn't matter, and there is a manual froyo update as well
Sent from my HTC Magic using XDA App
Impatience is a virtue.
I had been running CM5 before I found out about the OTA. Decided to downgrade to 1.5 and wait for the update. Realized (thanks to you helpful cats) that I'd probably need 1.6 in order for the update to go well, but, since Froyo was already available via manual update...
Worked like a charm. DL'd the DRC92 and DMD64 and installed accordingly, then installed all 3 of the OP's files in order and it works like a charm. So far 2.2.1 is a snappy little update and I love the look. Not totally thrilled about the T-Mo branded stuff but it's not intrusive, either.
And now, to root...

[Q] How to apply Blur_Version_4_5_91_MB860_ATT_en_US_zip OUTSIDE THE US

Good Day.
I noticed that Motorola has released Blur_Version_4_5_91_MB860_ATT_en_US_zip (gingerbread) for the atrix 4g
the only thing is after talking with them, the update will only go out to (and work) for phones located physicaly in the US.
I am in New Zealand.
I should note here, that ultimatly i just want to upgrade my phone to gingerbread using the mororola release mentioned at the top of this post.
I was hoping someone may be able to suggest a way to put the update on my phone here in NZ.
I have tried putting Blur_Version_4_5_91_MB860_ATT_en_US_zip on the SD card (root directory), and telling the phone to update (settings-about phone-system updates), but the update does not start. It just returns to the about phone screen.)
my phone has system version
version_4_1_83_mb860_att_en_us
model number
mb860
android version
2_2_2
baseband version
n_01-77-07p
motorola webtop version
oshwt_u1_4-257-19
kernel version
2_6_32_9-00005-gde8e6dcfpgh48(at)ca25rhe85 #1 smp preempt tue mar 1 09:17:07 pst 2011
build number
olyfr_u4_1-8-3
I have checked a few other threads related to Blur_Version_4_5_91_MB860_ATT_en_US_zip but dont really find an answer for loading this outside the US.
any help would be appreciated.
I'd prefer to keep the phone relatively standard, but will of course consider any action to get it up to the gingerbread version released by at&t-motorola.
many thanks in advance.
kind regards
Gavin
I don't know about using the update, but you can unlock the bootloader and flash a ROM that is the same as the OTA.
Start with the pudding thread to unlock your bootloader
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136261
Then move onto a ROM that you want. If you want the stock OTA go with Kens beta 4
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1159385
You could also read this thread, I haven't looked at it.

The SD Card method worked fine with me. I have the AT&T Atrix which I upgraded officially to Gingerbread in India.

i wonder why it works for you and not for me?
perhaps i will need a AT&T sim card OR use the reply in post 2 above.

Thank you for taking the time to put the above together for me. I am downloading ATT-2-3-4_Pudding_preroot-rar and plan to try that tonight or tomorrow.
then will get the rom you suggested.
I was hoping i could manage to convince my phone to install the zip file provided by motorolla for the gingerbread upgrade, but it appears i'll have to get 'tricky' as you have shown with the links above.

Since the reset, i have installed very few apps (face book etc), and i have not freezed any aps.

or

5. Reboot tab while holding volume down and plug into your pc
6. Open heimdall-suite-1.1.1-win32 folder
7. Open the Drivers folder and run zadig
8. In the zadig application click options then list all devices and in the drop bar choose your tab then click install
9. After the driver is installed successfully open heimdall-frontend
10. place all the files from the stock rom in the correct locations
FactoryFS = factoryfs.rfs
Kernel (zImage) = zImages
Param.lfs = param.lfs
Cache = cache.rfs
Database Data = dbdata.rfs
Recovery = recovery.bin

You should check this rom out it's the first rom to actually impress me http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1325469 I suggest using the stock launcher from 2.3.5 but besides the launcher it's blazing fast I did a CPU benchmark and got 432ms!!! OC at 1300mhz and it has a CWM recovery
A few notes on this method:
When you open zadig, you may have to select Options and check "List All Devices" in order to see your tab listed.
Also, after pressing "Start" on the frontend, I immediately got the message "Failed!" I pressed "Start" again and it all went smoothly.
And then when you reboot into recovery, note that to select any of the options, after choosing them with the vol up/down keys, you have to press the Home button. If you press Settings, you'll get a scary "!" triangle. Just hold power to shut the tab down and reboot.
Worked like a charm, just make sure you load the drivers BEFORE you open up the frontend program! I had to reload the drivers, then start front end again to not get the "failed" message.
Anyway, great job. Very easy!
just used this guide to flash my galaxy tab.
very simple. thanks again for posting it.
when the device got done downloading the info heimdall was sending, it rebooted pretty quick, and i missed booting into recovery, but i held down power till it hard reset and went back into recovery from there.
just be ready to hold volume up after the flash. the reboot is much quicker than i expected.

100% complete VZW galaxy tab stock 2.3.5 rom with root
Here is stock update with no root from EC02 to EI04 just rename to update.zip and place on the root of your sdcard boot into recovery by holding volume up while powering on then choose install update.zip
If already on 2.3.5 or a Gingerbread build skip this and go to step 1. if you are running ECO2 or DJ11 to check on your tab go to settings then about device and check the build number the new 2.3.5 apps will not update right and might cause issues just use the above zip to update and then root

So I just got my Refurb Tab and did the OTA update and was on 2.3.5. I proceeded to step one. Flashed fine and things seem good. At first Ti Backup said it didn't have busybox access so I downloaded BusyBox from the market, rebooted and now it works. Now is this just the stock Rom but rooted? Is it considered a Vanilla Rom then? Just trying to get my terminology down here. On my fascinate you root but are still on the stock rom, then flash a vanilla rom or some other rom (ex: CM7 or whatever) but i thought i read somewhere on here or another thread that this was considered a "vanilla package" didn't make sense to me so figured i'd clear it up.
Look in applications and see if you have "superuser"
if you do, you have root.
Works great! Thanks very much for the help... Much appreciated.
nicely done!
How is everyone flashing CWR to their Verizon Galaxy Tabs?
Is any possible way to get Modem.bin from this firmware (2.3.5). I accidentally flashed Modem from leaked 2.3.4 and now stuck with S:i800.0.3V.EF01 baseband and can't make my Tab all stock. I would really appreciate it. Thank You!
Works Great~ now my SGT is rooted Thank you so much.
Stop posting my files all over the internet.

[Q] ICS 4.0.3 manual=> Wi-fi is down => instruction for dummies

Hey community,
Recently I upgraded my Nexus S (i9023) to ICS 4.0.3 via VQ8PQk_V.zip file.
Should have waited for official update via notification bar...
My wi-fi is down (used to work on 2.3.6).
I did factory reset, restored wi-fi but it works only without SIM card.
The phone is unlocked.
I tried to downgrade to 2.3.6 using the same instructions as for upgrading. But I don't see droid with yellow exclamation mark and I'm not able to point to update.zip file.
I know nothing about rooting, CMW and other specific terms you use.
Should I wait when google will notify me with correct upgrade or it will never happen? Or there is another way around?
Sorry for being dummy
I also choose that file to update to 4.0.3 and everything in my phone works fine... even wifi......
Just wait, hopefully it will be corrected soon. Same problem here...
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
The reason you don't see the droid with yellow exclamation mark is most likely because recovery is broken, you have to flash cwm via fastboot manually. Then you can downgrade to 2.3.6 via recovery. Follow this guide to flash new recovery.
