A500 or A200? - Acer Iconia A500

So i am looking into getting my first tablet. I am debating between these two mainly for the price. I know the A500 is last years model but it has the hdmi and the rear camera which the A200 doesnt. However, Im sure the A200 will get the ICS update first being the newer model... Im leaning toward the A200 because i know i wont use the rear camera but im not sure i will be using the hdmi. Ideas?

I'm not going to tell you which to get, but a refurb A500 32gig model is $300 today on woot.

Oh great. Now I have to hurry up in my decision! Haha... Thanks for the info

I bought a refurb A500 from Walmart.com for $278 & it just arrived yesterday (it's the 16gb model & the woot one is a 32gb)...I absolutely love the a500!!! I played wit hthe a200 at Best Buy after I placed my order for the a500...and I am VERY happy I got the A500. The a200 is a nice tab...but no HDMI out and no rear camera...not major things but any advantage is good...

I've had the A500 since July and I do not think I have ever tried the camera or the HDMI. To me, it's all about the custom roms (currently rocking the Honeylicious 3.2.1). I don't see the need for a rear facing camera and I'm sure we will get ICS in some form or another eventually. All comes down to $ imho.

Can go wrong with either. One drawback of the A500 is the microphone. Its crap

Depends entirely on how you plan to use it, if you see a time in the future that you might want to play a movie over HDMI then go the A500 or A501, If you are happy just using the tablet as a tablet and not using the feature on the A500/501 then go for the A200...
I know its nice to save a buck or 2 but I have found that occasionally I have used the HDMI out and its good I don't have to stuff around to share movies at friends places...
But as I said, that was good for me....

i really like the feel of the a200. feels like a high-end device.
although i dont use the rear cam a lot, its one of those things where i would be kicking myself when a time comes that i do need it, such as taking pics of documents for pdf conversion
same with the hdmi port. i barely use it but the time i do i am happy i have a tab with hdmi and full size usb.
as for the front cam on the a500, be cautious tho that the alignment is fudged up. not sure if its like that on all a500 but it makes is useless and very awkward to use because u have to tilt the tab at an angle

Samsung 10.1 vs Transformer

Hey everyone,
I'm trying to purchase a tablet and am undecided between the transformer and samsung tab 10.1. Just wondering if anyone who has used one or both could help me out with the decision. Ill be using the tablet mostly for entertainment and for school once or twice a week. Thanks for the help!

The Gtab 1 or 2? If you're refering to the first gen, of course Transformer is better. As for second gen, its not released yet so anything people say is mostly opinion based on specs
I prefer the asus spec wise. All the extra standardized ports and external storage slot are why people choose android over ios, imo. Internals seem similarly matched, Sammy gets the prize for prettiest tablet. If these were laptops sammy would be an nice ultra portable and asus would be the good all-purpose.
I would get the TF for best bang for the buck. You will save 100 bucks and on top of it it has a microsd slot and hdmi port, where the Samsung 10.1 does not. If you just wants looks well then go with the 10.1. I believe that Samsung made a huge mistake not including a microsd slot.... PLS vs IPS screen, what 10% brighter then the IPS screen on the TF not worth it to me. With that extra 100 bucks you save you could get the dock.....TF for the FTW.....
I wanted a galaxy.. but I have to say the lack of SDcard slot on the thing was an absolute dealbreaker. I really couldn't be happier with my transformer at this point.. especially with 3.1 fixing the YouTube / video problems

this may be a little off.. but no one can compare the Samsung 10.1 since its not out. ill give you my opinion about the Xoom and the 10.1 off what i know.
I have heard from people who got the special edition Samsung 10.1 version, was that it had a better screen than the Xoom. the only thing that attracts me to the Samsung 10.1 is the thinness.. but after having a transformer, the size feels just right. I want something there , not just paper thin.
To be honest, get the Transformer.. I had the Xoom for 2 weeks and straight out of the box i knew there was an issue. I tried to enjoy it, but the screen kept turning me off. I went to the motorola forums and random other people posted asking if they would fix it via a firmware update? kinda like how the Nexus 1 got tweaked. There was no solid info regarding the screen. if your looking at the screen 100% of the time it needs to look good. At Angles, the Xoom looked blurry. I always had to hold it directly at me. While my Transformer (4 days new) i can set it down and tilt my head from my PC or any angle and it looks nice, colorful and sharp.
One of the turn off was that the Samsung 10.1 tab had a 3mp camera for front while the Transformer has a 5. these are just minor things but to me, id rather have a 5mp.
IMO, The colors stand out better than the Xoom but i cant compare the Samsung 10.1 which is not out yet.. With the new firmware 3.1 , it kicks even more ass. Samsung has said it would ship with 3.1 out the door. I haven't had any screen bleeding or creaking like a few have stated. Im completely happy in my purchase. Now i want the dock (which is not something i wanted originally) but the Transformer is an excellent Tablet.
What it comes down to is features, Skins ect. The Xoom has a Barometer built in, Transformer has a GPS without a carrier (but works better at tracking you when you uses a hotspot type of device) beyond that, its a click and it shows you the map where your at... i have had problems following me ...say in a car, while im driving. I think the built in Transformer GPS is meant for not moving objects but just a quick glance of the location. If you want it actively following you, like a cell phone GPS use a hotspot from Comcast 20$ a month or create a hotspot with your cellphone.
Im not sure what the Samsung 10.1 has exclusively built in. But since i purchased the transformer, ive forgotten about the Sammy 10.1 tab.
Thanks for the input everyone. Ya the biggest fear I had was not enough ports, especially the hdmi. The transformer is looking like a better pick to me. Just making sure that cloud based storage and remote desktop is standard on all of them right?

the remote desktop is kind of a joke, the reason being that you have to be on the same network as the computer youre linking to. mightbas well use the computer itself if youre that close! but this can always be replaced with other apps readily available in the market. i heard PhoneMyPC was a good alternative, only $15. as for the unlimited storage, its free for a year starting from when you sign up.

The screen on the TF is imho, very good but not great. With all the hype, a more objective review is required. I find the red a bit too brown and the black levels weak. You can see this if you use the attached color chart from this review's video: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Asus-Transformer-Eee-Pad-TF101-vs-Acer-Iconia-A500-vs-Motorola-Xoom-vs-Apple-iPad-2.53242.0.html . I suspect the samsung will have a better screen since they want to showcase their new PLS screen technology.
Note: the attached file size was limited to a 96k upload limit so it is better to download it yourself.
I had been going back and forth for over a month on if I wanted the Transformer or Galaxy Tab 10.1.
I purchased a Transformer a month ago when it first game out and like it, but was also bothered by some small issues. And I kinda think it's a little ugly. I ended up returning it and waiting on the Galaxy Tab 10.1
At the time I thought the Galaxy Tab 10.1 would have a micro SD slot (it was shown having one at CTIA). But now it seems the Wifi model doesn't have a micro SD slot. And one thing I learned from my 16GB iPad 1 experience is 16GB and no micro SD slot are a bad combination. So if I was going to by a Galaxy Tab 10.1, I'd have to spend at least $600 on the 32GB model.
I love the look of the Galaxy Tab 10.1, I love how thin and light it is. I love the PLS display. At least I love all that third hand from what I've seen of it so far. But the price difference for me is now $200, since I could get a 16GB Transformer and use a 16GB micro SD card I already own to get 32GB, versus having to buy a 32GB Galaxy Tab 10.1.
Yesterday I canceled my pre-order for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and today I went to the store and bought the Transformer again. It's not perfect, but it's pretty dang good and better than anything else available now and apparently in the near future.
I love that it has micro SD, mini HDMI, micro USB, an IPS display, and is still pretty light compared to the other Honeycomb tablets out now.
I'll learn to live with the crappy speakers, goofy wide with rough edges, and ugly color. For only $400 though, it's also pretty amazing deal. And if I can ever find a keyboard dock, that'll just make it even sweeter as an Android netbook.
I really wanted to love the Galaxy Tab 10.1. If it wasn't for the lack of a micro SD slot, I would still be waiting for that instead. That is just one thing I really don't want to sacrifice. Samsung really is copying Apple a little too much these days.

Huh? Port forwarding! btw Splashtop is much better then logmein and its free with the purchase of TF. RD is a must for me casue I have my server which has no keyboard mouse, or monitor, having the ability to access it from the TF is much more easier then use my notebook.

I'll add that there's a version of Splashtop coming that will support connecting to any device via a Gmail account. The desktop version has already been updated to support that, and so all we need is an update to the Android version. Then, you'll be able to connect to any machine over the Internet without fussing about with port forwarding that the like.
I remember Asus stating that support for the feature will be coming over the summer, and so we don't have long to wait. And I'm very impressed with how well the solution performs over wifi--I use it to watch TV via Windows Media Center on my desktop while my wife watches something else on the TV in the bedroom. It's as good as being at the desktop.

I enjoy remoting my pc which is on the second floor while I'm having a meeting on the 4th floor. you'll be the joke when you keep giving bad example.
I was in the same boat. But I saw it on amazon and just bought the ASUS. Done and done.
Nuke please.. it duped.
You can go either way if the lack of the SD has no impact to you.
On the other hand, there is the support side of it, which was the major decision factor for me.
20,000 people on a Samsung Pad is good, and there may be some good XDA support.
200,000+ people on the Asus EEE Transformer with custom kernels and fixes before asus can even think about addressing them is the biggest factor when it comes to android based devices.
Its the same reason I was on the moment, and same for the Epic 4G. Tons of people, tons of community support, so anything that might be broken has an incredible chance of being actually addressed as people will take it into their own hands.
Plus the factor that Developers will support and ensure their software works on the devices with pure numbers.
Oh, and on the Splashtop chatter. Take a look at your running services, its already there "Splashtop Remote". Just be nice to be able to use it, or has someone figured out how we can use it already?

My cloud app >[a bunch of next buttons]> my desktop and that runs splashtop for you
I had the same difficulty, though I was under the assumption that the Samsung had miniHDMI / MicroSD / USB ports. Of course I choose the transformer in the end because the extra battery / keyboard option is a nice addon though I don't plan on to buy but if i ever wanted more battery I'd know how to get it xD. The other thing that help me decide was that I personally believe ASUS has a better support staff for computing than Samsung, personal experience.
I walked into a Best Buy today and was looking for a TF, which of course they did not have. they had an Acer Iconia, so I went to go check it out. It was really heavy, and was wondering if the TF is similar in weight. Looking back, it might have been something attached to the Iconia that might've made it heavy, but I am not so sure. Also, all internals for Iconia/TF/Tab are all the same so they will perform similarly if used the same way, correct?

Iconia vs transformer

I'm torn right now any thoughts? I like full usb of iconia and the screen of the transformer. The plastic case on the asus worries me but I hear its fine and sturdy...
Thanks

There's a couple-page thread comparing the two a page back in the forum
In general, ASUS has slightly better screen (but possibly a higher incidence of light bleed from backlight), better accessories, faster updates and an unlocked bootloader, while Acer has the on-board USB host (ASUS requires the dock), LED flash for rear camera, better sound (incl. Dolby) and better build quality.
It's amazing how post-purchase critical the USB host has become to me, causing a serious /boggle when I saw that the otherwise /drool Samsung Galaxy 10.1 has no USB host port (along with no memory card) ... had to give up something for the smaller size but I think those're going to be painful differentiators

To me, the reported lack of a memory card on the Samsung is the larger issue (though I have used the Acer USB port to connect a keyboard and a flash drive). I wouldn't buy a tablet without a memory card slot.
yeah, the presence of a full-size SD card slot (vs micro) plus TWO USB slots on the upcoming Toshiba is making me feel better about their pricing.
I recently sold my Transformer + Dock and got an Acer Iconia A500, mainly because of the build quality and the fact that the dock just wasn't for me. Anyways, received my Iconia A500 today and damn, I love it, its just way better for my needs (mostly for games) I love how it has the haptic(force feedback) its great for games, how come no one mentioned the Acer has this while the Asus does not? Speakers on the Acer is also light years ahead of the Asus. Great tablet, I just hope they unlock the bootloader.

Yes, do a full battery charge when you get it, before use, allow about 4 hours 'til the light goes off, then another 1/2 hour.
Use the tablet, let the battery go down to about 10% or so, then full charge + 1/2 hour again.
You should be right for a good 5-8 hours use now.

A100 Build Quality

How does the A100 feel compared to the A500 in the hand? Obviously lighter, but quality wise.
Quite nice actually. I have both, would say that the A100 is as nicely built as the A500. The plastic back feels solid, and the swoopy design on the back is pretty subtle. The power button is bigger and feels more solid. The volume rocker is as sorry as the A500. I swear it takes better photos too. The screen is fine, viewing angles at any angle I would ever use are OK. It's the worst looking at the bottom edge at like an 80 degree angle, and who does that? It also seems more evenly lit the the A500. Overall, I love the little thing. I don't carry the big one for work anymore.
Sent from my A100 using XDA Premium App
How about the screen? I'm worried it'll be too skinny. When reading some PDFs or Kindle books I find the formatting of pics/diagrams easier to view in the "tall" orientation as opposed to "wide". I was worried the 7" might seem too pinched, otherwise the size is a blessing. 10 is just too big for the way I use it. iphone is too small and 10" is too big, so I'm thinking 7 will be the sweet spot.
sweet spot
Whooweee I wanna one if there is a sweet spot.OK seriously I think the 7 inch one would fit in better.fit in my purse. But I will have to wait for price to go down
Mde me realize I hadn't tried the Nook application on this thing yet. Fired it up with the default font, Looks fine in portrait mode, it's about the same as a paperback book. The chapter art and text don't feel pinched the all. I like it better than the 2 page landscape mode. It's too small for that. I'm giving it a thumbs up as an e-reader. I also got tired of the 10.1 inch monster. It's relegated to the living room laptop role. The A100 looks less silly using it to read at lunch than the half a laptop.

The gift card deal has expired on both the A500 & A100 even though it still says so on the web site untill you read the details and it gives the dates. $328 for the 8 gb wish they had the 16 gb.
I imagine this will be fixed but the Kindle app on the A100 (HC 3.2) FC's when you open a book. It doesn't do this on the A500 (HC 3.1)
I currently both and have to give one of them up. I still can't decide which one I want to keep. The A100 is much easier to hold and carry. Also HC 3.2 is suppose to scale better too. I find thing are small on the A100 but can pinch & zoom so I can read it better. I think a lot depends on what you want use it for.
Don't think you could go wrong with either one, they both have their good and not so good points.
I've got both too. Keeping them. Probably shouldn't. Didn't know Kindle didn't work. I Had an original Nook, so I usually buy books from them, that app works fine. I oddly have more problems with tablet specific apps than phone apps. Just checked my 3.2 updated A500. Kindle works fine. Weird.

I might pass the A500 off to the g/f, depends on what I can get for it. The A100 is basically a mini clone though right? Reading stuff online it has the USB, micro-SD, micro-HDMI and all that. How about the GPS? Any of you owners note issues like some had with the A500(slow to lock etc)
I have a samsung charge, all samsungs have crap GPS. Used to slow. I used the A500s once, seemed ok. Haven't tried the A100s yet. It really is a shrunk down A500. Can't wait for custom ROMS/kernels to really pimp it out.

Yea, it'll be interesting to see the battery life once it's got some OC/UV love. I crank my A500 way down to 600Mhz when I'm just reading PDFs or ebooks.

I came to the A500 from a Viewsonic G Tab, that had bad viewing angles. Not impossible, but certainly not as good as an iphone or even the A500. I'm about to go pick up my A100 at Walmart, can't wait to come home and unbox it. I haven't seen a Kindle update claiming to fix the A100 problems. Amazon just delivered my A100 yesterday. So far, so good, but HoneyComb is going to take some getting used to.
Nothing wrong with the A100 for the price you can get one at. A true Honeycomb 3.2 tablet with a 1024 x 600 screen for just a little over the $249 Nook Color that struggles with honeycomb, and much less than the $499 HTC Flyer that only has one "extra" feature over the A100. And that'll cost you an additional $70 for the stylus required to use it.
I've posted my review of the A100 on my blog.

[Q] killed my A500

I totally killed my Acer tablet. The extended warranty company is refunding my money as it would be cheaper than fixing it.
My question is, should I stay with Acer or go for the Xoom? The mic on the Acer sucked, and I use it for college. It would be great to be able to record and take notes. I did love my Acer with a standard USB slot, the Xoom has a micro USB.
Any recommendations?(besides ipad)

1. Nobody here @ XDA is going to tell you to get an iPad, I promise
2. Wait a couple weeks. If you have extra money to spend, the new Tegra 3 devices are coming out, mainly the Asus Transformer Prime and later some unnamed Acer devices. Otherwise, the price is going to drop on all current Tegra 2 devices starting with black Friday / cyber Monday sales.
3. From my research, the Xoom and Iconia have almost identical specs, but the Iconia has the USB. If the mic presents a big problem, use a wired one and take the USB, IMHO. Especially for college, plugging in an inexpensive USB keyboard should be very helpful.
I haven't personally had much time with a Xoom, but I can't imagine anything could make it excel in enough ways to replace a full size USB (for me at least).
Good luck with your decision, hope I helped a bit.
Thanks for the reply. I believe you are right, the zoom fails without a full USB. What kind of mic do I get? Is it a USB mic? I think I am going to stick with Acer. Its funny. The guys at the zoom forum dumped on the Acer. I reminded them they were the same specs. The full USB is awesome!

What is a good rom for this tablet?
This will depend on how "cooked" you want your rom.
For really cooked, you can try Taboonay or Honeyvillian. Both are good and used by many.
For a little less cooked, try Harkon or Lightspeed.
All of the afore mentioned have OC capability. You can also change out Kernels for a little better performance based on what you are looking for.
And for a really good one for the 500, goto www.tegraowners.com and try Thor's Roms or Kernels. Really sweet for the 500. He's the guy who put together the recovery for the 500/501, for without, we wouldn't have such an easy time flashing!!
Unfortunately, I run the 501, so mine has to have support for internal 3g, so choices are limited.

The Thinkpad tablet has a full size USB as well. Not sure about the keyboard but based on the Thinkpad track record, its likely better than the Acer one. If you want better bang for your buck though stick with the Iconia as it is quite a bit cheaper.

The Thinkpad tablet has a full size USB as well. Not sure about the keyboard but based on the Thinkpad track record, its likely better than the Acer one. If you want better bang for your buck though stick with the Iconia as it is quite a bit cheaper.

Does that digital pen work with the a500? I would love that for university!

Doubtful, I just tried using a digital pen from my cousins Asus tablet and didn't work at all. Looks like we're stuck with crappy capacitive styli.
well I got the acer again. It came with 3.1 so I rooted it and am now running THOR's rom. Fantastic stuff, thanks for all the advice!
Thors Kernels are the best!!!
As the Rom....

Good move! I'm running Thor as well, totally happy with it. He's working pretty hard on an ICS build right now, can't wait!
The ICS rom is actually running quite well, but, it's not a daily driver. But it looks ok for an ASOP alpha and runs stable.
The real meat, will come when Acer/Samsung/Asus releases some ICS source for their new tabs. Like the a701. Like HW acceleration and Gpu acceleration.
Things will definitely be rocking!!!
And I'm betting Thor, will have the first rom.
That's funny I liked my wife's a500 so much I bought one for me:}} Now my gtab is sitting in the closet soon to become a gift to one of my sons! Only issue is that I have not found a way to tether it to my unrooted droid x?? Any suggestions??
i hear so many good things about thor's rom but it doesn't bother anyone that the rotation lock and auto brightness don't work? maybe i'm just a stickler for perfection

Nobody uses auto brightness anymore. Uses too much battery
Rotation lock is only feasible if you're riding a roller coaster.

I believe you needed to be running a custom ROM to connect to an ad hoc network, such as your phones hot spot. Not sure why/how, but I do remember reading that.

[Q] Advent Vega. Is it still a good deal?

Hey guys!
I'm thinking of buying a 10'' tablet and a second hand advent vega seems like a decent option.
That said, I am wondering if you guys think it is still a good buy, considering it's a relatively old device and that there are - as far as I can tell - no android 4/cm9 roms for it?
Thanks!
Go to modaco or tabletroms.com
There are a few ICS roms out there. Look at vegaics in dev forum. I'm using beta 1 on my Vega and its nearly flawless. If you want a good solid tablet with full size HDMI out, full size USB input and a tegra 2 processor then the Vega is the best value for money, hands down. I've had mine nearly a year, I won't change it until it dies.

its able to show 720p video and has hdmi. so for about 140$ its a great deal
Display is not that good, but acceptable for this price
Hmm 140 sure sounds like a good deal..
It's either this or the Kindle Fire 10" - if the latter is as inexpensive as the 7".
Thanks for the input, everyone! By the way, where's the best place to get a Vega from?

I have the Point of View version (its basically the same hardware just a different brand on it) and I have to say I like the tablet very much. I recently installed VegaCream RC2 on it (has a couple of minor bugs that depend on how you use it if they are annoying or not (mic not working is one of them)) but other the that works very smooth. Ive had mine for well over a year now I think (year and a half?) and same as x5starguerillaa said, wont get a new one till this one dies.
