I just want to use Wifi to determine location, I think I can do that in CM7, but I cannot find way to enable it in stock ROM

See the other (long) thread about this ... it does NOT work, sadly, and nobody can say why it doesn't, nor is there a fix.

I use Co-Pilot, or if you want a free gps, try to port the htc locations to your device, using adb, or flash the rom that has the included htc locations (mordoco i believe)
jark, i am not looking for a GPS app but an app that will tell me whats apps i have installed are using GPS or location. i am having a problem with my GPS so i wanna try and see if theres another app thats using GPS is screwing it up. thanks
menu>settings>applications>show permissions>fine (GPS) location

[HOW TO] fix GPS Problem with custom ROM's!!

Hey everybody,
Just wanted to let you guys know that I was messing around with the GPS setting trying to get my location to be correct on the first try with Google Maps. After tinkering, I found that if I unchecked the Google location Services box in menu>settings>location my location was read almost instantly and accurately! Bidding me farewell to Google Maps saying I was 50 miles away from where I really was.
Hope this helps for everyone, I know it did for some friends.
Let me know if it works, and good luck!
Cool. My Google maps tracked exactly where I was. Even the corner of the intersection(where is my house is located on the street)

I installed the zip file, after it took about a minute to lock on, and after it locks almost instantly. Is this normal to take so long first time locking on?
If you are using a custom ROM then yes it is. I know that from my experience, even after installing the zip I was getting a little lag and even getting the wrong location for about 3 second then it would lock on correctly. Doing what is mentioned in the original post fixed that problem for me entirely. Hope this answers your question!

This is the greatest info I have read regarding the GPS issues with the Thunderbolt! Such a simple fix but one that doesn't make sense at all. Regardless thanks a heap OP! A mod should sticky this information for all to see!
Seems to break location altogether for me when I disable Google location services. Can't get a fix in maps or the sense flip clock weather.

Great bud! Glad I could help!! I would love for a mod to sticky this, it is such an easy (odd but easy, lol) fix yet so many people absolutely hate that the gps won't work right. Hope more will see it and get their GPS working the way it should. Again glad I could help. That's the beauty of a community like this, between all of us, we can make so damn phenomenal phones! lol

Sorry about that, i figured it would be safe to call it that since there is clearly no true fix to this issue anywhere as far as i know at least. Please do correct me if I'm wrong. It worked for quite a few people I know so I thought i would try to help some people out.
Thanks. At least its more accurate now.

I think what we are seeing here is that the gps is not using agps at all. Proper operation would be the agps actually assisting the quicker lock. Instead the agps and gps are working separately and by disabling agps....the locks should still be slow no matter what.
It is for me anyway.
That said, standalone gps will always be more accurate.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
Funny thing is, standalone how isn't even working, since when you turn off Google location services it shuts off completely. Also for me it seems to be attached to WiFi so if its off it says I'm within a 2 mile wide area...

No...that's how agps works. It will be within a few miles.
WiFi triangulation will always give quick locks.
Standalone gps does work, its just slooow.

I too was having the lag in getting a gps fix. My solution was:
1. Download GPS Status from the market
2. Under menu/tools select Manage A-GPS state
3. Press reset
4. back to menu/tools Manage A-GPS state
5. Press download
I now get instant fix.
Hope it works as well for you.

This just proves ephemeris data is not being downloaded, or used by the GPS automatically. I'm sure HTC will fix it in the future.
I hope, anyway.

why is this in Development, nothing was developed, just a simple suggestion of changing settings which doesnt work for everyone.

What info do you need..please ask me.
for the market to be there, you need to flash the google apps package, flash it in recovery the same way you flashed the rom

Atleast 2g dude.
Just logging in into ur phone google account won't require a huge data plan.

Yes...and after that i will get fixed WIFI thing?
I don't know. I'm new to wifi related things. And that logging in into google account might solve market app only.
But after rooting the phone there might be wifi related apps or atleast may be fixes for that. I heard manual adding of network might work. But dont know really.

Fixed by changing some settings in advanced tab in wireless settings (set 14 channels)
I can't access data on my wildfire CM7

[Q] GPS???

I thought the the A500 was GPS enabled when not connected to data (wi-fi). Is this even possible?
If not; why would Navigation be included if u have to be in ur house to use it with a wifi connection? That just doesnt make sense to me.
Help?!
Not sure what you mean by GPS and wifi. My understanding is they are two separate things, but are "linked" if the software your GPS is using needs wifi to run. In other words, GPS does not need wifi to run, but certain nav programs need wifi to run. Hope that helps.

There are navigation apps and they are downloading maps on sd card (copilot live or other which can be found on the market ( sorry for my english).
And google maps - you can download map to use it offline but for navigation you need wi-fi 3g modem

For some reasons, people are still asking for GPS solution. I hope creating this thread will help some people.
To begin, you need any root file explorer like (ES File) and AgnryGPS apps.
Next, you need to modify the Build.prop in the [/system/] folder. Watch this video by reverendkjr
Look in the Build.prop and find the following code to modify. If the line is missing, add that line to the Build.prop file.

AngryGPS is for GB / ICS ROMs only. Someone may be able to upload one here.
Also to the OP:

while my GPS was working well again, it was still subject to the deep sleep bug in ICS. Rebooted and it worked again, but I really didn't expect the build prop to fix that requirement.

Did you modify the build.prop as I indicated in the op. Secondly, make sure to replace the GPS property. And last, use 2G Network Only.

Ok, I have to ask... Why the 2G only?
Usually, I don't ask why, but will it works.
Since you asked why, I may say because it works lolz
Actually, someone said that when you select 2g or edge only, your phone will not switch between between network type, which gives your phone more stable data connection. To find out, test it yourself. I have tried many times already, the 2g is always giving me a lock.

Understood. I can't see me dropping to 2G, which was why I balked at it. With the amount of data I consume, I can't trade high speed for GPS. Sorry. Guess I was mostly curious because it can work fine in one rom, and not at all in others. Then there are some rom's I've had where I had to disable assisted gps, then gps would work fine... although general location until GPS locks doesn't work at all, and the battery life in that scenario was bad.
I shall continue to wait until I hit the right rom again.
Thanks for the help, though.
