Now that everything is almost fixed, I'm thinking of flashing the ics on my kindle. But the question is that do you need root access to get the ics working? Because I got the 6.2.2 update and i lost my root access. And is the ics rom working properly? Such as hardware accel. And any bugs that needs to be fixed? Because I want it to be perfectly stable maybe I should wait more.

Video is only partially fixed. Youtube works, but needs to be in SD mode. Netflix is reported as not working.
HW acceleration is not ready yet. If video is your priority, stick with CM7 for now.
Custom ROMs need root as far as I am aware.
as posted above video is half fixed let's say more of patched but not 100% no Netflix yet but it is more responsive touch wise sound works great I moved my backups to my PC , I'm comfortable enough to make this my daily drive now cm7 is nice on my phone not a tablet, ICS and move on with your life
the ICS build is still way on the Beta side for me... Until the ICS rom has video and sound working as good as the Stock rom, I really don't see the point.
I got the Fire to use primarily as a media device and it currently using the stock rom works quite well at doing that. I don't need a pretty looking tablet if media abilities don't match.
ok
thanks for the information, until the video, bugs and hardware accel gets fixed,
i will just stay on stock rom.
Yes, the video stuff that needs fixed is making me stick with CM7 for now.
Stuff I tested
Netflix - does not work
Qloud - does not work
MX Media Player - works but performance is better in CM7
YouTube - SD works. HD does not.

Which ICS rom and CM7 Rom are the most complete in terms of working. I tried searching and couldn't pinpoint which one as there are so many anyone could give me insight that be Great
What I did first it install infinitybiff's from, which is the stock Amazon with android market and root access. First rom I ever flashed, good for beginners. I used it for like 12 hours. Then I flashed CM7. Didn't like it so I flashed bl1nkk's ICS rom. Currently it doesn't support video and audio, but other than that, its a great rom. Very smooth. I'm confident that a fix will be made soon.

What about installing the CM7 ROM and then theme it with ICS?
Lipstick on a pig. Not saying that CM7 is ugly, just that it isn't the same.

I didn't even think about doing that, but I like the whole ICS experience better anyway.
ICS is pre-alpha, video and sound are not fully funtional, it is not recommended at its present stage for everyday use (though many certainly use it that way)
CM7 is stable, great for everyday use. It has some minor bugs, but all the hardware is functional (minus bluetooth and light sensor).

I vote for cm7.... Turn your kindle into a tablet.
All you really need to do is enable the home button under tablet tweaks and switch the fake buttons to the right side if you are right handed. Install SwiftKey or some other keyboard.... The aosp keyboard is awful.
What does CM7 do for us that the stock rom + root, market, and 3rd party launcher can't?
I think the thing that would really get me to move from stock is if somebody managed to get that BT module working.

Not much imho, however the user experience is more of a pure android. The big take away is that by running a non-amazon ROM, you no longer have to worry about a forced software update that will break root and wipe out twrp. Yes, there have been other posts about how to block those updates, however we wont know how effective those measures are until another software update (ie running an android software firewall) is pushed out. CM7 is tremendously customizable as well.

non-ics isn't very tablet friendly imo. however, even though cm9 (alpha) is relatively stable (and i use it daily for things like rss, surfing etc); don't even bother if you care about sound and video.
having said that, given how easy it is to reflash, try both and see what you think.
Hello,
at first sorry for my english, is not the best.
I installed CM9 on my KF. Almost everything works fine.
But Adobe Flash 11 do not work. Flash videos canĀ“t be played.
Can anybody help?
thanks in advance. Have a nice day.
Its a bug that the devs are working on. I believe its because there's no hardware acceleration yet.
Waiting Also
I'm waiting also. Same issue.

Yeah, something to do with the 3.0 kernel. No hardware acceleration until our awesome devs get that straightened out. Sounds like they're making great progress though!
CM7 for now
If you want to have flash, and all the other goodies of HWA like Netflix, and Youtube. You will have to wait for the new kernel. I know its being worked on, so you may just have to "suffer" with CM7 for now.
I have tried CM7 but it is not very smooth.
Is there any rom better?
For ICS rom, I have tried the Hashcode Zone one but after flashed the rom, my fire just stuck at the booting animation......so I have only flashed CM7 right now.
Personally I love running whistletop's cm7, it runs super smooth for me, and most importantly HW acceleration works as well as all video (flash, HD YouTUbe), which you currently loose with CM9 until the devs get HW acceleration working. Until then, I'm sticking with CM7.
I've been running Whistlestop's CM7 since late January and it's been great-- no wifi issues, SOD, etc. I'm holding out for hardware video acceleration (and hopefully USB OTG) before I move on to ICS.

ICS CM9 Kang ROM Themed recommendation
Since yesterday I am using the ICS CM9 Kang ROM Themed. Before I was using the CM7 barebones. The ICS CM9 Kang ROM is fantastic. It is extremly fast and responsive. The Hardware UI acceleration is not working yet for HD and some times the system frizes. But I can only recommend the use!!
Try this ics ROM at this link:

To me CM7 is the best ROM since everything works. The build in THIS post seems to be slightly better than the other CM7 builds that I've tried.
I've been using jackpot Clavins CM9 on my KF since mid January and love it. While the hardware acceleration doesnt work, everything else runs great. Very fast and newest builds have eliminated SOD issues.
Is there a specific ROM that is Clavin's CM9, or are you building yourself from his github. I see a lot of guys taking his source and making their own ROMs, but nothing specific from Clavin.
Any other opinions on this? I am looking for a ICS Rom which one works the best and is the most stable?
I'm using MIUI from the miui.us, and it's pretty awesome. Still needs some work but sounds like they all do - most issues just seem to be display formatting needing a little tweaking.
You kinda gotta be an MIUI person though, it's a little Apple-esque, not for everyone, though I find tablet usage may be a little less polarizing...

I haven't exactly tested ICS roms extensively, but I'm currently using...
NRGZ28 Energy ICS KANG Rom
I really like it, and the most recent issues fix the Sleep Of Death issues they were having. I would definitely suggest it if your interested in ICS. Get it, flash it, see how it feels and if there's anything that you do that the lack of HW Accel effects. If not then your good.
It comes with NovaLauncher, and since I have a copy of ADW EX, I tried putting that over top of Nova, but I found it to be more sluggish. I would suggest staying pretty much bare bones on what the rom gives you, maybe adjust the awake clocks a little (down clock to 1.0GHz for stock, or under clock it to press the battery out a little further).
MoDaCo would be my suggestion otherwise. It's just Gingerbread, so it's the same old Android stuff. I've never been a huge fan of CM7, but that's just me

I agree that's (IMO) the best ICS ROM at the moment. However, Sleep of Death is still an issue. I'm not sure whether I'm terribly unlucky or what, but I get it every single time I attempt to shut down the KF, no exceptions, ever since 3-15 came out. Never had a SOD on 3-13.
Either way, I second that ROM as awesome among ICS ROMs.
Me likey.

I am also using Energy's KANG. I have not yet encountered the SOD. I used CM7 for a while, but wanted to try out ICS, and am glad I did.
Very happy with it, but am closely watching hashcode's kernel development thread.

Though limited by stock settings options, wallpaper options, Gr7 by modaco is the smoothest running imho, just throw adw/golauncher so your not stuck on the stock launcher.

You will still have access to all your books through the kindle reader app from the Android market place. Instant videos will not work

I use Energy ICS Kang rom v. 4.29.2012 ant it rocks. You should try it.
For me, it only has few small issues: comes from sleep only on the second press of the button, does not always show that battery is charging while it charges.

You can still access instant videos through your browser, I use Dolphin Browser HD. I made a bookmark and put it on my desktop.
For the record, I'm using Team Kang ICS Build 35
Any CM9 users? I've got the wifi version of tab 7.7. I try to follow the CM9 development thread but I'd like to hear from any users about the experience. I'm running stock now and from what I've read it's not really worth rooting until ICS. What are your CM9 impressions?
I tried beta2 when it came out for a bit, but without wifi or hardware video, it was basically useless for me, considering the primary uses of my tab are watching tv and browsing the internet (though software video is fine for SD TV rips, it is pretty hard on the battery, plus it bogs down for anything with a decent bitrate). Very impressive work so far but they've got a ways to go still before cm9 can be used as a daily driver for me.
If you ask me though, you should root your tab anyway. You can tweak performance better, block ads, back up your data properly, and of course uninstall bloatware. You don't even need to up the flash counter to root and install cwm recovery.

The one CM9 based ICS ROM out now for the 7.7 is pretty much only for developers to work on at this point, unless you can do without wifi.
But, you'll still need to root your tab if you want any apps besides the stock Samsung apps to be able to write to the external SD card.
I think everythimg will be fixed when the officical ics is out!
But no word on it yet.
Currently running amaces oreo rom for both devices and well, they aren't completely stable with bugs for wifi and video, and it has been a number of years since i moved on from android 5, 6 and 7.
I'm looking for something for 1080p playback, if possible, on the hd+ and solid wifi. With no show stopping bugs.
Maybe android 6 or 7?
Thanks.
Currently running the last Nougat rom on both Hummingbird and Oviation.
No wifi issues on both. HD playback works great on both. Full hd playback plays on hummingbird with issues, oviation however is not able to.
Maybe a MM rom for both.

My husband ran the last version of CM 13 (hummingbird) with HDMI-out capability for several years before moving on to different hardware. Other than the shutdown issue it performed very well for him with both MX Player and Kodi.

Thanks for the info!
I'm currently running amaces last aosp mm rom on the oviation and fullhd playback isnt an issue on vlc and newpipe for youtube. Just needed to downgrade twrp and install it alongside magisk for root.
I was planning on getting a newer device, which would have better hardware obviously, but i'm reluctant to contribute to ewaste when i have a working device.
i'm keeping the hummingbird on nougat since i don't really need it for media usage.
Both devices still work incredibly well as ereaders, duh, when paired with the fantastic app Koreader. Which is what i mainly use them for.
Thanks and i hope this helps someone.
