I am running the Prime 2.1.1 ROM and it's good. I have had trouble with the Revolution HD ROM (didn't restore apps automatically, Market crashes, some apps are shown as not compatible etc.). I will wait until the first ICS ROMs come out before I try anything new (e.g. the KRAKD ROM looks promising).
So maybe i play honeycomb and wait for the ICS roms to drop then cause that works

I have tried revolver, prime, and revolution HD for me revolution is the most stable and the battery is amazing on it. the only thing I don't like is how really stock it is. Revolver is really customizable rom you can do alot tweets but the battery drains fast. Well prime, I was getting alot of fc so I didn't play with it to much.

First off, make sure that you always make a backup of what you have working on the tablet. This will save you much frustration if something goes wrong. Nandroid backups are the ones that will restore a whole ROM for you. As for backing up apps with data, you can use Titanium Backup (requires root).
The two main firsts are that you should get it rooted (very easy now) and install CWM (Clockwork Recovery Mod). CWM will allow you to flash ROMs, make backups of the ROM itself and handle various memory functions.
Read through the Stickies in the Android Dev section, they will tell you all information you need to know.
As mentioned above, if you run into any kind of issue, before you post, use the search function and see if it is something that has been asked and answered before. If you are following the steps to whatever you are doing and you get stuck, chances are good someone else has done the same thing and gotten help with it.
Another thing to note is when you choose a ROM, look through its feature list, and if available, the bug list. Looking through both of those should aid you in deciding if that specific ROM or Kernel is something you want to use. If you get as far as flashing Kernels, make sure it is one that is compatible with the ROM you are using, otherwise the tablet probably won't boot and you'll have to flash a Kernel known to work with whichever ROM you chose.

Just a month? Back when I rooted my TF we had to walk uphill in the snow both ways just to get the documentation on the process.

I know im so happy I get one she was at first gonna get me an acer a500 but the transformer was on a door crashers sale for 299 minus the the dock for it and they was sold out here in london with in 2 hrs but she in yellowknife and her store didn't open till noon a i am only assuming she was able to scoop it up... But I'm more then it's the one she got... Now if it is should i get the dock or would be fine with out it

Anyway, I would recommend getting the dock. Sometimes it is nice to have a physical keyboard, plus the additional battery adds hours of use time.
The number of posts that I am seeing with "I modified my A500 and now the ICS update won't apply or my tablet won't boot" seem to be increasing.
How reasonable is it to expect that Acer should make assumptions about exactly what is on the tablet before running the OTA installation?
Surely, if you change any of the checksums on either the internal file systems or the boot loaders, then you are asking for the scripts to fail and for something to break...
Can you ever return a tablet that has been modified back to EXACTLY a factory default state?

Because 95% of people that, just for example, "root", don't know what they're doing. All they know is that it allows them to uninstall 'bloat', install tools they wouldn't normally be able to run without it, replace files and tamper with code and file content as advised by their peers to get this and that working 'better'. They follow directions to the T, use one click tools or get entire modified OSs and proceed to tinker and tamper with software they don't really understand. When the poop hits the fan, somehow the blame shifts off them completely to Acer and just about anyone else.

I agree with you on most of that, but you gotta remember that we all started somewhere and the best way to learn is by getting right into it and tinkering, I do agree that most people don't understand what they're getting into and simply refuse to learn when someone tries to correct them.

I sure hope so cos I'm getting frustrated each day the update refuses to arrive. To be honest, I think I'm done with Android tablets. Android tablets are meant for mods/hackers. OSs/tablets by Apple,RIM and Microsoft are meant for guys like me who don't want to tweak or install ROMs. When updates are released by these guys,owners of their devices definitely get them without all these hassles.
My next OS will be Windows 8. That OS I'm very familiar with

It was explained on Acer ANZ facebook page last year, cannot recall when, it was either with the release of 3.1 or 3.2, that the updates are done by the batch numbers set by google, not acer. the updates are hosted on futuredial so when it gets hammered it's not even acer servers to which i doubt they have any.
It seemes Acer has updated their Acer Update Enhancement app in the Google Play Store. It's supposed to help those who still haven't got the ICS update. Try it out and see if that helps?
You HAVE to update that app to get the OTA update.

I have to agree this update should not have been released, I'm stock on the nexus 7 and its so buggy! It keeps stuttering, taken ages to load webpages , all that project butter has gone, not happy, funny enough it's perfect on my galaxy nexus which is running 4.2 stock rooted, BTW I got the update ota

To add to this, I've just tried to set up a second user and the setup crashed once , gave me a blank screen for 10 seconds every time I pressed next, then the launcher crashed twice , gave me a blank screen for over a minute, stuttering when swiping side to side, even now as I type this its not registering a click then I click again and I get two letters ..... And pinch zoom is jerky! Wtf happened?!?! Hope there's a fix on the way, this is the one device I'm reluctant to root and install custom ROM simply because 4.1 was perfect

I honestly don't see that much different, other than having to wait a few days for devs to update borked apps. Stickmount is my biggest concern, and some of the video players. They'll get updated though. Hang in there and if you decide to go back, the Nexus Root Kit threads and WUGS toolkit thread at Android Forums can get you there if you carefully read the detailed instructions.

The dev for stickymount says it may not be solvable, Multi-user by default is a nightmare.
I will learn from this not to jump the gun, but mostly I read that the update was good. Youtube app crashes within a min, firefox, boat browser crash, amazon app store wont save my login now, there's more but cant think of at the moment. Oh Gmail app crashes, Google currents crashes and I haven't tried half of my other apps yet but I've seen enough to know this is complete crap. Im just mad that i have to illegally root and use someone's homemade software to restore my tablet, not sure it is illegal to root, nor would I care but it's the point.

Yeah i noticed after updating that some of my apps that reinstalled after the update would crash when i tried opening them for the 1st time. i unistalled then reinstalled them and they worked fine after that. i too am not really liking the update hopefully i can find a way to revert back to 4.1.2 easily or theres some work arounds (especially for stick mount as mentioned earlier)
All this talk about apps not working is not on the new OS....well it kinda is but not really.
android releases the OS and DEVS have to update their apps to work with the new OS. they do this with the android SDK (i think) IMO, google SHOULD release the SDK for the new OS about a month out. giving Devs the option to update their apps before the OS hits getting rid of all "these" types of posts.
also, FWIW, i did a clean install of 4.2 and i haven't had a singe app crash on me except MX player (which was updated yesterday for 4.2) other than that, everything is smooth, fast, working wonderfully. i know its not what you want to hear, but maybe a clean wipe of the device would be best. Google wont put out a crappy update....but sometimes, for some reasons unknown, it doesn't take well to and update with all the user apps and their data. at the very lease, clear cache and see how it works.

Completely agree. They new update 4.2 corrected a lot of bugs. The power management is a lot better and the memory management too. Ive run some test and saw that the system load is quite inferior to what it was before due to a more clean management process
Use Mskips toolkit. Option 9 lets you download the 4.1.2 stock image. Easy peasy

First I wanna ask anyone who says the 4.2 update is terrible if they even tried a full data wipe/factory reset? If not, try that before accusing Google of releasing buggy firmware. It could be your stinkin data/apps fault

Most to all the people were decent. Plenty of people pointed you in the right direction, or linked to a guide. You gotta do a little researching and educate yourself a little so you understand the whole process.

Nope, it's not illegal to root.. it will supposedly be illegal to unlock a phone (for another network) without the network's consent though.
Just think..there's no reason at all running custom firmware/roms/rooting can be illegal on a nexus device, why do you think the bootloader is effortlessly unlockable?
And if you think about it, no, it's not really crazy that is a "hassle" to revert to old firmware, because
A) most devices (Apple comes to mind) you can't do this, unless certain conditions apply (if you backed up SHSH blobs, etc etc)
B) if you understood the process of flashing the stock rom, and if you had ADB/fastboot setup correctly, it's simple as pie to flash the old firmware. And the "homemade software" is just an interface for n00bs (like yourself) and would not exist if it didn't use adb and fastboot behind the hood. And if you think it was hard to do what you did, you should try to do it on a device with a locked bootloader: (droid x2 comes to mind) it's a nightmare
So basically, Google has this wonderful OS and provides devs and users alike these wonderful tools (and Nexus hardware to match) at our disposable.
Idk about you, but I say kudos Google!

Bootloader is locked meaning no customs roms until then unless you go with the safe strap method and from what I seen people are having problems with memory and some crashing of the problems and if you have a 8.9 hdx safe strap is not supported but I have faith in this community and belive we will have roms in the future

So custom ROMs are totally possible, and I'm sure there will be one or two soon, but the issue as stated above is the bootloader is locked. This means no custom kernels which means no AOSP ROMs. This currently rules out Cyanogen, AOKP, Paranoid Android, everything like that. Everything will be Fire OS based until the bootloader is unlocked. Before yesterday there wasn't even working Play Store downloading. Progress is being made, and the bootloader could be unlocked in a couple weeks, or it may never happen. Until then you just got to stick with what we've got, which is pretty nice as far as I'm concerned. The hardware is quite nice, and with a custom launcher and Gapps Fire OS isn't terrible.

Well, i have one based on stock almost ready With all amazon stuff removed and full google experience. I still have a few noob problems but i think it shoud be ready after christams.
Also note that any rom could be ported even CM thanks to safestrap. The kernel is not a problem. Im not sure i'll have the time to do so but if so i'll prove it

these companies are getting better at locking them, and there is less and less incentive for people to break them. look at the bounty thread.. only 145 bucks. i have a Moto X which is over 1000 dollars and that still hasn't gotten cracked. i wouldn't hold on to the kindle hoping it will get cracked... if i didn't have amazon instant i would probably send this thing back (i may anyway, as i'm having wifi issues)

I have almost every tablet ever made in this household. Nearly all have boot loaders either bypassed or broken. Already the 7 inch boot loader has been bypassed on this, a new device. The truth is the more popular a device is the quicker it is modded. If sales are high on this device it is likely to get dev attention. Try not to be such a Debbie downer

I have been around Android since the beginning and have to say that out of all devices I have seen or bought.... this one has the least amount of bloat and is one of the best...
Quad core running 2.2ghz, 2gb ram??? nothing I have thrown at it has lagged or been slow!

Recon that! If only we could have working widgets and some fully working alternative launcher .. Play store doesn't bother me that much, since I get all the apps either from an alternative store or I download them on my phone and sent them to the tablet, so no big deal till now.

Well the device was a gift I can't just bring it back.
Basically Amazon banned me for some dumb ass reason literally like my neighbor got in trouble so now I can't use it. and when I try to buy **** on the kindle I can't use that store either so I am praying that there is some type of movement on the boot loader because otherwise this going to be one expensive paper weight.

I'm not sure you are following. 1mobile market and or side loaded apk's along with a custom loader bypasses all of what you just said right now. Also, in the last few days, the play store has even been made to download on both the 7 inch and 8.9. In other words go to the general section and read, root, and install working play store on kindle and then use apex and wallpaper fix with widgets and you basically have a Google tablet with an Amazon options bar. As people get exposed framework going it will get even better than that. Boot loader crack is not necessary to make this a Google tablet. As for pure Google well that would be great for some, or cm 10.3 for others but in the end all of that is really just ui and a few options. The necessities of downloading from Google market and some customization can all be accomplished right this second. I have very few apps from Amazon on my tablet in fact. Most are Google market apps. As the bright boys spend more time with this tablet it will become even easier for the less experienced users to accomplish these things as well.

How in the hell does one get banned from amazon?!?
So i just got my amazon fire hd 8 and im wondering if there is any big difference between the 7 inch i mean that one has custom roms and TWRP. But whats so different about the 8 and 10 that no one has tried more stuff on it. It seems like no one really has the 8 and isnt trying to change more on it. Does anyone have any feedback or work they have been working on?
The 8 and 10 are not near as popular as the 7". Plus the 8 and 10 just got root and doesn't seem to have a very good fastboot mode. Don't know that we will ever see much development for the 8 and 10.

earlier firmware version (5.0.x) for the 7in Fire allows booting unsigned recovery.img so custom Recovery can be used
the HD 10 or HD 8 don't allow that on any firmware version

weak, i wonder are there any leads you know of that are being talked about?
I'd imagine were not going to see much going on with these at least until Flashfire is compatible. That's what I'm hoping for at least but I don't know much about dev.
I have tried using every version of Flashfire from about v.24 up on my Fire HD 8 5.1.1. All ended in the same fashion. Flashfire would basically just reboot the device after running for a few secs no matter the action or combination of options. The latest Flashfire v.30 makes it to the black screen but then hangs there for at least 20 mins and nothing. (havent let it sit longer) I did lose the ability to enter stock recovery on one of my Fire HD 8s somewhere along the way most likely using Flashify to attempt to install twrp when I first started playing around with these a few weeks back. I was finally able to get back into stock recovery yesterday on it.
But im just trying to understand the root mode. As it seems the root isnt complete because alot of apps dont work. I am checking on this because i believe fire OS is garbage and makes the devices run very slow. Still trying to work on this but mostly what i know about the progress of the HD 8 and 10 is that kingroot works and thats about it.

Let me understand this a little more clearly and Ill see if I can help you.
First off you're saying you were able to gain root access using kingroot?
Have you tried to install the Google playstore at all yet?
Also we are pretty much stuck with Fire Os for now but can improve it some.

Yeah I understand that. I have google play store but it sucks and we have very limited usability with root. I understand where we are but it doesn't mean there's not improvement that can still come. Even with a locked bootloader doesn't mean everything is impossible.

I don't use kinguser I switched to SuperSu. But yes other then a little debloating, changing the stock Fire launcher, removing the adds, and adding Google playstore to get away from the Amazon Appstore there's not much else of going on. Lots of risk goes into messing with these cause the bootloaders so there would have to be a super high demand but people are turned off by this crap Fire OS. Devs are busy people all we can do is wait and see if anything happens. Unless you have a few ideas?

True but it doesn't stop us from looking into it. Well first flashfire doesn't work. If it is root we should be able to write a custom recovery (or at least temporarily) or has anyone looked at the boot partitions yet?One thing is that amazon are truly idiots because if I brick mine I don't really care they usually give out replacements left and right. I doubt we will get bootloader unlock but we should be able to get custom ROMs somehow.
