Anybody know any rumors / talk of someone working on a stock android Rom for this?? Or kit Kat even... I'm definitely not interested in Fire OS in the least bit.
Thanks

Bootloader is locked meaning no customs roms until then unless you go with the safe strap method and from what I seen people are having problems with memory and some crashing of the problems and if you have a 8.9 hdx safe strap is not supported but I have faith in this community and belive we will have roms in the future
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda app-developers app
Really? Because there's already root tutorials in kindle fire hdx > android development.
Unless those are "safe strap"? Idk I didn't look into it too much because I don't have the kindle yet (got it for Xmas I'm pretty sure lol)

So custom ROMs are totally possible, and I'm sure there will be one or two soon, but the issue as stated above is the bootloader is locked. This means no custom kernels which means no AOSP ROMs. This currently rules out Cyanogen, AOKP, Paranoid Android, everything like that. Everything will be Fire OS based until the bootloader is unlocked. Before yesterday there wasn't even working Play Store downloading. Progress is being made, and the bootloader could be unlocked in a couple weeks, or it may never happen. Until then you just got to stick with what we've got, which is pretty nice as far as I'm concerned. The hardware is quite nice, and with a custom launcher and Gapps Fire OS isn't terrible.
Thank you! Good to know

Well, i have one based on stock almost ready With all amazon stuff removed and full google experience. I still have a few noob problems but i think it shoud be ready after christams.
Also note that any rom could be ported even CM thanks to safestrap. The kernel is not a problem. Im not sure i'll have the time to do so but if so i'll prove it
Merry Christmas !

these companies are getting better at locking them, and there is less and less incentive for people to break them. look at the bounty thread.. only 145 bucks. i have a Moto X which is over 1000 dollars and that still hasn't gotten cracked. i wouldn't hold on to the kindle hoping it will get cracked... if i didn't have amazon instant i would probably send this thing back (i may anyway, as i'm having wifi issues)

Even if the boot loader didn't get unlocked working google play and a custom loader or exposed is all you really need and all are somewhat working now. I have almost every tablet ever made in this household. Nearly all have boot loaders either bypassed or broken. Already the 7 inch boot loader has been bypassed on this, a new device. The truth is the more popular a device is the quicker it is modded. If sales are high on this device it is likely to get dev attention. Try not to be such a Debbie downer

I have been around Android since the beginning and have to say that out of all devices I have seen or bought.... this one has the least amount of bloat and is one of the best...
Quad core running 2.2ghz, 2gb ram??? nothing I have thrown at it has lagged or been slow!
Best tablet out right now, fast, portable, good battery life and did I mention it is easy on your wallet too? lol

Recon that! If only we could have working widgets and some fully working alternative launcher .. Play store doesn't bother me that much, since I get all the apps either from an alternative store or I download them on my phone and sent them to the tablet, so no big deal till now.

Well the device was a gift I can't just bring it back.
Basically Amazon banned me for some dumb ass reason literally like my neighbor got in trouble so now I can't use it. and when I try to buy **** on the kindle I can't use that store either so I am praying that there is some type of movement on the boot loader because otherwise this going to be one expensive paper weight.

I'm not sure you are following. 1mobile market and or side loaded apk's along with a custom loader bypasses all of what you just said right now. Also, in the last few days, the play store has even been made to download on both the 7 inch and 8.9. In other words go to the general section and read, root, and install working play store on kindle and then use apex and wallpaper fix with widgets and you basically have a Google tablet with an Amazon options bar. As people get exposed framework going it will get even better than that. Boot loader crack is not necessary to make this a Google tablet. As for pure Google well that would be great for some, or cm 10.3 for others but in the end all of that is really just ui and a few options. The necessities of downloading from Google market and some customization can all be accomplished right this second. I have very few apps from Amazon on my tablet in fact. Most are Google market apps. As the bright boys spend more time with this tablet it will become even easier for the less experienced users to accomplish these things as well.

Do you have TWRP installed ??? If you have just go to amazon website to download the ROM. Rename it to *.zip then copy to your sd and install, but remember to wipe your device by 3 options on the top (sry I forgot the name)

Yes. The standard method of updating completely reformats the system and overwrites everything. No root, no TWRP, No FIREFIREFIRE. You should just wind up with the stock launcher.

If you still have the triangle, that is FireFireFire, not TWRP.
If you put the downloaded file into the /sdcard/kindleupdates
And then used Settings -> Devices and then Update
After it was complete and it reboots, there should be No FireFireFire and TWRP as the update formats the /system directory where these were stored.
What's the use of getting something if it will have little dev support ;p
You can always bet the Kindle Fire will have dev support. It's the most affordable/popular android tablet out right now.
Now back to stock. Had an unnerving .acore error with no true solution but return back to square one again. Every twrp restore turned to be identical to to one trying to leave? Wish I could sell this.
Happy you can return yours.
I'll give you a hundred for it. A long as it's back to stock.
People complain that manufacturers are making it harder to unlock devices but after reading these forums, can you really blame them? I wonder what percentage of Android device returns are because of user error.

Bricked devices would not exist if manufacturers unlocked their hardware. How many computers get bricked because someone messed up installing linux? Oh that's right, zero.
Hi all,
i wrote an article about the Kindle Fire for non-US customers, explaining what works out of the box and what kind of options you have if you want to make use of the full potential of the device.
http://smartphoneblogging.com/2012/03/review-kindle-fire-how-usable-is-it-outside-of-the-us/
this is not meant as an faq for technical stuff like rooting, but more of a overview of whats possible with this tablet. this is hopefully interesting for people thinking about getting a kindle fire which don't live in the USA and are not familiar with Androids possibilities.
Please let me know if there are any questions...
Edited first post as the URL has changed...
Hi
That is a very good article, and something I have been looking for as I live in UK.
You state:
Amazon pushes out updates to the Kindle Fire pretty often, which would normally be a great thing, but not so much if you are using a rooted device with the stock ROM. Updates are forced and there is no way to deny them, other than using the Kindle Fire only offline which of course makes no sense. The problem is that each update will break your root access so you have to wait for the community to again root the new version and provide an walkthrough for it. This cat and mouse play can get very annoying. Chances are that you don’t really need to stick with the stock Kindle Fire ROM anyway as most Amazon services can’t be used outside of the US. This is where custom ROMs come in handy
Does this mean that if you keep the stock ROM updates can still be pushed to the device but by changing the ROM it will freeze the pushed updates or is there no way that these can be stopped currently?

Yes, that's right. Keeping the stock ROM will mean OTA updates will be pushed to your device, and you might lose root.
With a custom ROM like the CM7 or CM9 Rom this will not happen, as you basically have a different device with that ROMs.

Thanks. As far as i know you should be able to use your Kindle Fire normally outside of the US, if it has been activated using a real US Amazon account with a real credit card. All services should work.
But of course this won't last if you move to another country permanently (change address) and don't use your US credit card anymore...
The only thing missing now is an official CM9 build and hardware acceleration. Hopefully we will see this soon as it would really push the kindle fire capabilities.
Hey folks! After searching I found nothing, so here we go!
I am still considering buying a nexus 7, but something has been prying on my mind: when Google removed the universal search from the galaxy nexus, did they also remove it from the nexus 7? I had a galaxy tab 2 that Samsung did this to, and was kinda a bummer since I really like the feature! So does the nexus 7 have universal (I.e. being able to search on-device as well as internet) search?

Nope, it's here, at least in cm10 that is. Nice to see you here ijimaniac . Buy this tablet, you won't regret it. My TF has become a glorified gaming console since I got this (as I don't have enough space on the N7 to keep a ton of games), and although I had to originally RMA it (and got a b60 while before I had a b70, go figure) due to light bleed, this tab is amazing, and I am normally pretty judicial when it comes to devices.
I can confirm that my stock 4.1.1 Nexus 7 does indeed have universal search functioning properly.
It sure does, it works differently though. It shows your Apps, then you swipe across and it shows you web results, then another swipe will bring up, for example, videos etc. So it doesn't show them all at the same time.
It still shows contacts and things from other apps which is the most useful part.

Happy to help, the one day I decide to peruse the N7 q/a (SUPER bored this Saturday and just crashing), and I found you. Good luck with the nexus, you won't regret it,
If you are still deliberating I cN recent getting one. Sooooooo good in every way. hardware is very impressive. Build quality, and and user experience. I usually root and unlock every android device I get as I'm used to the rom being uncomfortably laggy. this usually results in life long rom flashing back and forth from different roms never really feeling happy.
This just isn't the case with theN7 the rom is smooth fast and responsive even when hammering several big operations.
Pretty much what in getting at is that you need to go buy one if you haven't already

After the aggravation of no flash support, multiple screen freezes, and the sometime slow buggy screen response. The screen is great for viewing though! I decided to just send it back. To be completely truthful I would not have bought it, when not supporting flash!! Reminds too much of Apple!! I hate when companies force me into, or in this case out of something I want just because they feel like it!! If they think it's a security risk, make it a user option! When you buy a router, do they force you to use encryption? No!! It's my tablet & I should be able to watch flash videos if I want!!
And before anyone starts saying, you can get around it by using firefox or dolphin browsers, you can't! At least not completely, they are buggy!
Just want to see if any others, traded it in so to speak!!

Same boat as you, i had it for a while then gave it back. I ended up sticking with my infinity.
Mmm... Flash is no longer supported mate all across the tablet/mobile world. Besides if your not willing to side load the flash apk then I suggest you go buy a laptop. Flash is buggy anyways but for me flash is nice on my N10. I Can watch my Hulu through the browser. If you want flash you got to do a little work to get it working. Just like any android tablet nowadays. The issues you stated can you be a bit more specific? I haven't had any problems on performance on this thing. Browsing is very quick. Just opening apps and loading my gmail is very fast compared to the Infinity I had. Even using ttorrent, I can actually download a 3gig HD movie without sacrificing performance. No laggyness at all compared to other previous tablets I've owned.

Back on topic though, I guess I just was one of those users that got a bad tf700 and had a terrible experience. My N10 has been running superbly. The only reason I doubt my assumption is b/c I went through 3 tf201's before finally giving up and waiting on the tf700.

Flash works fine on the Nexus 10 and it is Adobe who dropped Flash, not so much Google. Adobe said they were dropping all mobile flash support.
Guess I was one of the lucky ones because my Nexus 10 is perfect. Better than the Xoom I had, the Transformer tf101 I bought my wife and the Galaxy Tab 10.1's I got my parents.

I really don't understand how Flash Player is so important enough to justify a device purchase decision, especially since it's becoming obsolete... Might just be my browsing habits, but there are 2 sites total that I use that would be "somewhat" pointless without flash player. Just 2. And those 2 sites I could care less about on a tablet (one of the sites is YouTube; which has a standalone app on Android lol)
So in a few months when either all Android tablets are updated and no longer support flash, or your tablet that does, is completely outdated, you are just going to NOT own a tablet ..
At least that is what I get from your "reasons".
Honestly you don't have to justify returning the tablet, if you can't take change I suggest you move to the north pole or something where pretty much nothing changes.
These posts about "Why I don't like the N10" or "Why I am too lazy to sideload flash" or " X tablet is Better than Y tablet" are REALLY REALLY getting old ..
I am in these forums because I own said device, not because I want to talk about how I returned it, or how much I hate it ..
Should be a rule if you don't own the device and are not a developer, leave said forum.
@OP
It looks as though you don't have any clue what you are talking about. The nexus 10 definitely supports flash. You don't need anything but the flash.apk to use it on any browser. It is the users choice to use it or not. And please do a little research next time before you try and slander or put down a company (Google) for something that they have nothing to do with. It's Adobe that doesn't support flash on the mobile platform. Not Google. All you would've needed to do is take 11 seconds to sideload one app and you have flash. Either way. If you don't have this tablet, what does your opinion of it matter here in the Nexus 10 forums? It doesn't. Move along to the next device, complain about that one, and waste more space in another forum with your opinions.

I agree with you 100% and I wish happy owners like me, who are the vast majority, could hide threads like this to make it easier to focus on threads of interest.
While many of us xda users are capable enough to search and find solutions to Chrome's lack of flash, there is an app I used to keep handy when I encountered a site w/ flash. Its called Flashify : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nightshadelabs.anotherbrowser

I'm using Ocean browser and this apk worked fine for me.
Just use puffin browser whenever you need flash. It loads the content on remote servers then sends it back to you. It can even emulate a touch pad or a game controller for flash gaming.
It works on iOS too if you care about that.

I had an Infinity for two months before I got the N10. Each person's experience is different but my Infinity experience was laggy and frustrating. I found myself rebooting frequently trying to make it speedy. I disabled most of the Asus stuff, it just didn't "feel" like a great experience. I will say Asus is on top of updates and the bloatware is minimal by comparison to other non-Nexus tablets, of course.
The N10, for me, is just smooth. Living with the N10 is just better for me.
No one had an answer last time I asked, does anyone know now if there is a fix for flash/browser yet, so when I hit full screen it doesn't crash the browser? I tried all of them, they all do it

Developer huh?? Like I said flash is buggy on the nexus 10! I did side load the apk flash pack & it only works partially!! Go to any site that uses flowplayer to show flash, hit the full screen button & the 10's screen goes black & does a partial lock up!! The only way you can move off that screen now is hit the home button!! And its not the flowplayer program, because it works fine on my PC!! It will do the same thing on your 10 too, most likely!! Take your personal assumption & attack where it belongs, off a cliff!! My point was I don't like Google, Android, Adobe, or developers taking things away just because they feel like it!! Remember the software companies work for the public, not the other way around!!
If I knew flash would not work properly, as i stated before. I would not have bought it to begin with!! I believed the developers that there is a workaround, there's not!! At least not one that works 100%.

Task650 knows what he is saying and we are all just trying to help you and correct you because what you think is not true. Yes there is a way to get flash working 100%
Here is a link to get flash working 100% you will need to unlock and root your device if you want it to work 100% Yes I'm sure that site you spend time on should work as well. It worked for me and I was able to watch Hulu. I would test it out for you but I just unrooted to exchange my N10.

But I guess you don't need it now since you've returned your N10. Its unfortunate because its a great tablet.

Question for OP, did you pay a restocking fee? When I swapped my 16gigger with 32 it was like a 15% fee!
Back on topic though, I guess I just was one of those users that got a bad tf700 and had a terrible experience. My N10 has been running superbly. The only reason I doubt my assumption is b/c I went through 3 tf201's before finally giving up and waiting on the tf700.

I believe I will be charged the 15% restocking fee, credit not issued yet. Apple customer service is way better in that regard. I think in the future, I will wait to see the device in a retail store first, save time & trouble on both ends!

So then... what mobile platform are you going to buy in a year or two? Plus, it's the mobile Flash player that's causing the problems. That's purely Adobe's fault for dropping it.
I can tell that your "multiple screen freezes, and the sometime slow buggy screen response" are from fullscreening Flowplayer and being unable to get out. You make it sound like a generalization throughout the whole device.
Anyway, were you talking about this?

Yes sideloading will not give you 100% especially if your running stock and not rooted.

Thanks for the helpful response, unlike some other members that tell me I can't believe my own eyes!! Mine is heading back already but this may help others with the same problem!! Personally, I like flash & wish it would stick around. I take offense when others tell me what I can & can't have, especially when I'm paying them & they're not paying me!!
Look, another boot loader we won't be able to unlock!

I wouldn't be so sure about that. Root will probably be available via Bin4ry's tool. And we already know what developers like Hashcode, fattire and verygreen can do to locked bootloaders. It's gonna be awesome if Cid pays a visit to this.
I saw this the other day and just facepalmed... I kinda for some reason hoped they wouldn't make a phone, it urgs me already as it is seeing people letting their kids watch TV on their phone while at a restaurant so the kid doesn't bug them and now we can feed them some amazon prime with that. That's just my 2 cents, sorry if I offend any parents that do that, its just kinda a pet peeve of mine.
