ANONYMOUS response to MEGAUPLOAD shutdown - Vibrant General

as you may already know, megaupload was shutdown earlier... read on for further information
According to the Associated Press the worlds largest file-sharing sites, MegaUpload.com, has been shut down. As it stands right now, the website is completely inaccessible.
Federal prosecutors have accused the owners of Megaupload with violating piracy laws, possibly exceeding 500 million dollars in pirated content. Once the 13th most popular website in the world, operating as a free file hosting service for any kind of content, Megaupload.com is potentially gone forever.
Megaupload.com staff claims they were always on top of complaints about material that might have been pirated, but for now the service and the content stored within are gone. Currently, there are no answers available as to whether or not the legitimate content stored there will be released.
For users who had previously used Megaupload, some alternatives to the service are RapidShare, MediaFire, DropBox, or Box.net among others. This story is developing, so expect some additional information soon.

Yes my friend, this is big time indeed. I got on Twitter/@anonops and they are taking everything down. 5600 "operatives" are communicating through irc and systematically striking these sites. I would expect to see something on the national news about it in the morning.
That link that you posted rider has all of Sen. Dodds personal info on it. Sure he is a public figure and there are sites that metacrawl all that info together but its kind of erie that his is posted now with all this going on.
Edit:::: If you get a spam link labeled Operation Megaupload
DO NOT CLICK IT
This is how ANONYMOUS works and it will use your computer to ping these sites over and over. It is all over the internet and news agencies now.

I agree this is extremely shady and should be discontinued...
Yes, there's a "but"...
The guy has no links, no information, no purpose for the money other than "it gets you full access". Once full access is achieved, presumably, one can then access the forums.
It seems as though he's charging money to allow access into a message board and not specifically to access ROMs.
Only a fool would purchase access to a forums which contains information freely available anywhere else with a little searching.

Agreed. It makes me really pissed because he has einherjar roms/mods/themes behind his donation wall. All of us at EDT put way too much hard work and countless hours into our work. And to have some punk ***** steal it, charge people for it, and claim its his own work by editing the build prop, really gets under my skin. This goes for all devs/teams. I speak for all of them.

I support your cause, what this guy is doing is wrong. If he posts ANYTHING related to donation requirements on XDA then notify a senior mod and have his ass escorted to the door. Both promoting outside sites that are designed to compete directly with XDA and requiring donations is strictly against the rules. He's treading in waist high water here...

Is there anything in the licensing for open source (GPL?) that can be done to send this person a C&D letter prior to lawsuits?

**Sorry about the double post, cant delete a post i guess.
Don't know if anyone knows this but he's also using fake users to post positive comments on his YouTube site. I researched this. For example, the user 'sfanua42' was used to post the following comment 4 weeks ago,
"THIS GUY RIGHT HERE IS THE BEST YOUTUBER/ CUSTOMER SERVICE GUY EVER! I RATE ***** ."
Clicking on this user brings up a profile that was created 4 weeks ago and hasn't been used in 4 weeks. It's also devoid of any user information whatsoever. He's a scam artist right down to the dotted line. I'm truly disgusted by this and hope something can be done about it and I feel for the original developers involved in the works available on his site.

To all devs and xda..

First i want to start by saying im sorry that you all are not understanding what the 5 bucks is for . its hard to find things on the net and in the forums. When i first started i came here to xda i soft bircked my phone from a rom so i asked for help here and got yelled at, called names and told im posting in the wrong room . I didnt know, but still someone could of helped me instead i was made fun of and laughed at for my spelling here at xda . so i went out and found out alot about phones made a couple videos and poof everyone found me ....i was helping so many people, my phone was none stop ringing but i picked up . i helped them out by telling people where to go, how to get what they want was hard so i made a site it was free all day up intill 5 months ago . see the site was coasting me 250 a month that i did not have but people still needed help they tryed to come here but people where mean cuzz where noobs . so thats why at akaskriller.com it coast 5 bucks . everyone knows these roms are free on the net there not paying for the roms there paying for a just cause for helping people in need no matter what . for the roms i put out i say i hacked theme or themed them out . its fun to theme them out and help people ..
so im sorry if u all got it wrong and i give back to the devs that i take the most calls on lol but for real you all stop being silly and saying bad things about me.
and we pay peoples bills that can not ... ask your selfs y do you all care so much what others do for help?
seriously? why hide the roms behind donations then? why not post it freely and market it as a pay support site? why post paid apps for free behind the donation? why not post it all for no donation at all and post a link for 5.00 a month tech support? i'm certain this thread will be locked in no time and look forward to the humiliation headed your way.
I do not accept your apology. You are a fraud. You stole peoples work to make money

it doesn't matter your logic for any of that.
1) you cannot advertise anything that has a registration/paywall on xda, it's against the forum rules (it's the same reason we don't see posts by samfirmware stuff anymore, even though we all know about it)
2) you cannot include links to services/devices you sell (it's fine to tell people of a download mode JIG and even to check ebay or other places, but to point directly to yours is also against the rules)
3) if you don't have the money to run the site, don't run it (why host anything at all beyond a few lightweight html files with explanations)
4) make the donation optional. register for the site for free and then people can donate if they want (hey, sounds an awful lot like what xda is)
5) do you have the permission of the ROM developers to repost their work elsewhere? (especially behind a lazy paywall)
if you can't follow xda's rules, then what do you expect to happen?
What you do is wrong!
1. You host warez on your site.
2. You steal all of out Dev's roms
3. Just link you "subscribers" to xda
Why not use something like forumotion.com to so you don't have to pay?
And the no credits?
This... this is going to get nasty unfortunately.
Be respectable people.
Suck my balls.
@aka , not s15 >.>
see this is xda all you all do is talk bad im sorry but there are no paid apps in site and app brain or 4share.com lol theres all your apps for free ... i tell you all and you dont here me
And the lying about creating a Gingerbread ROM with GPS?
I think the point that most are upset with is that you have done this in a sneaky manner and not asked any dev if it was okay to post their work. For us to put sometimes months into building a better rom and then you to take it change a couple icons or colors and then post it as your own work when you probably wouldn't know a XML from a bml and charge people for "support" which they get here for free. I personally have tried to answer every "noob" that has approached me and not once charged.

Roms we can't download featured here 1,500plus views struck a nerve

{Over a twentytwo hundred views- i seem to have struck a nerve. Alot of us had this problem- then I solutioned it out for us all}
Says [ROM] in the title but theres no rom to be had????
You had this experience lately? They make you Click here... click there. These guys make an XDA member play whack a-mole-look-for-the-rom link games?
Because of proprietary registration requirement some featured roms on this page cannot be downloaded by XDA members. Why is this being allowed?
XDA set up a perfectly reasonable system that worked JUST fine. WE DON'T NEED 50 websites to sign up for!!! - to get roms. All we need was XDA.
A few groups think they are entitled to change XDA(to its detriment) into their *****. Post links to these roms I'll put them here. We need to break these folks out of this habit. They say it isnt against XDA rules for them to do this- well then it wont be against XDA rules for me to post them
right in this post at the bottom of this post.
Its what ANDROID is all about. Open Source.
Mik and this Sac's Kingdom rom and some others cant be downloaded. (I like their roms- since I'm trying to download em-duh)
Has money changed hands? what is the deal?
Why are these roms --that we can't get unless we register on their crappy webpages-- featured on XDA Android Rom page? WTF?
And for all the sychophants, buttsniffer brigade and scene kids- racing to their rescue-:you see their troll comments in abundance: If every rom you ever download you need to sign up for their proprietary page- why do we need XDA then?
If this continues- XDA is cutting its own throat. I won't use a rom I have to sign up elsewhere to get it.
(So please post mirror links to Mik Roms and Sacs Kingdom Roms so the rest of us don't have to register)
XDA set up a perfectly reasonable system that worked JUST fine. WE DON'T NEED 50 websites to sign up for!!! - to get roms. All we need was XDA. This is a game changer.
I understand the sychophants and scenies will do what ever they are told.
But XDa had it right and these people are messing up a good thing- tryna make it their thing. And I call bull****!.
And this isn't a Q&A. This needs to be addressed by XDA- or we can just post links and nobody would be mad.
We just want straight-up Rom links!
If two guys do it- MIK and SACS to drive traffic for their own websites- it'll be prevalent in a week.
And XDA will not have any relevance.
The buttsniffers, sychophants and scene kids say- it only takes a minute to register over here, then over there, then here and here too! yeah! and there and...- blah blah blah.
What you gonna do when synergy or Kings or ACS or -take your pick- does this same thing?
And all the rest of them do it?
This needs to stop NOW.

Asking why XDA allows this isnt a Q and A- these lames are taking up space that actual developers offering real roms can use. This practice needs to stop and wont be put in a lil box elsewhere. All these guys are doing with tacit XDA approval- it seems- is promoting proprietary webpages that take people off XDA. To their site. They offer us nothing but a registration elsewhere. They are just taking up XDA space and tryingto get XDA members onto their own webs.
I agree.

Damn it sounds like some folks got sour milk in their cereal. All of the sites you are complaining about are "FREE" to register on and do not ask anything or for any money from you to get access to their links. So if XDA admins don't have a problem with it why should anyone else. After all it only takes about 60 second more out of your day.

FBI shut down MegaUpload

Im sure a lot of XDA users use MegaUpload . This is getting out of hand . MPAA is ruining the internet as we know it . Due process in America has been thrown out the window . Who will be next . What's your opinion on this matter .

That definitely SUCKS!
Most users use multiupload which uses other host sites that seem to be fine..for now
Personally, megaupload was inevitably going down. There was so much pirated content on it, most getting removed anyways, might as well take down site.
Not siding with MPAA but this argument over pirated material is a mess.
I thought the guy from Steam said it best, people wont use pirated materials if your service is better.
The MPAA said that VHS would mean the end of the cinema industry because people would be able to record their own movies and view them endlessly without paying.
The RIAA argued with the same basis about casettes and recordable media such as CDs.
Yet, movies cost hundreds of millions of dollars in the making which are recovered in matter of weeks. Musicians must pay a share of the money they make with gigs to the RIAA so they can "defend" their interests.
If there's anyone who's not losing a single buck are these guys in the MPAA and the RIAA, far from defending anyone else's rights other than their own.
the MPAA and RIAA should both get broomsticks shoved up their asses, but in the end this was arrest with due process. it just shows how unnecessary SOPA and PIPA are, since copyrights can still be protected under the current law. I mean lets be honest, as much as it sucks we all knew megaupload was hosting illegal file sharing and at the end of the day that is breaking a law no matter how you spin it.
I agree with you. Same thing happened when they shut Limewire down. Who couldn't see that coming. Really surprised any torrent sites are still up.
So lets say they shut down Rapidshare, 4share,...how do we get ROMs? Email? Even XDA has a size limit on uploads.
It is going to go from Internet to Intranet or GovNet.
I want to know how the FBI, A US based law organization is able to have non US Nationals Arrested and take down a site that is not extra-national. How can this be legal or even accepted by other countries.
MegaUpload is not based in the US nor were the arrestees. How does thoe FBI have jurisdiction for this. Just because a website can be accessed in the US does not mean that the FBI has the right to close the site down.
Quite frankly I don't care if New Zealand has an agreement with the US. The laws were not broken on US Soil, the servers were not hosted in the US.
This is like arresting someone form the US because they broke a law that is only a law in Algeria. I seen no difference here.
countries do have extradition agreements with each other and do cooperate in certain areas of law enforcement, ie terrorism and drug enforcement. So this is not something really extraordinary.

it's possible to create a site that simply hosts the roms that we would download. the problem comes back again to the regulation of the internet since people can simply abuse any file sharing sites. you may think that regulation is not required but it really is. remember the deregulation philosophy of the financial sector and the resultant excessive leveraging that lead to the biggest financial meltdown since the great depression. the problem as with any regulation is to get it right so that it doesn't hinder innovation but simultaneously protects multiple rights of multiple parties. our freedom of speech will never outweigh others right to property. the internet is essentially a public forum so a social contract has to be drawn between all people in terms of the conduit in this forum. just as we have a right to free speech, we don't have a right to threaten someones life. i think this is just some more growing pains for what is still new technology and media.

There is just something that is very unsettling about the fact that the FBI (A US law organization) is able to stop businesses in other countries just because it violates US Laws and has the ability to have extra-national citizens arrested on their behest. I personally only see this as being prudent if there was a law broken while the person was on US Soil and thus are under US laws at the time.
Unsettling yes. However, the media companies want justice. Don't be surprised when RapidShare goes down next.

I'm sure there will be a major inovative developement effort to defend the PIPA. Or I will just have to move back to Russia, given they don't have "chinese firewall" yet

well megaupload had servers in Virginia. the international factor is another complication in fighting piracy over the internet. when other countries don't act it does add pressure for America to act unilaterally to protect it's property rights. this mutual action of multiple countries proved that we don't need unilateral action and countries can in fact cooperate on this issue.

I would THINK they'd be gone until they get access back to their own servers because thats where files are stored. They should've gone with cloud options...

I agree, MU was my best option for uploading super fast, always was. Multiupload is good, but it has a slow as hell uploading time.

Droidgamers has been Hijacked!

Droidgamers site appears to have been hijacked. When you go to their site, it redirects and attempts to launch a trojan!!
I cannot emphasize enough, do not visit Droidgamers for the time being! Sucks, I like that site.
