Felt the need to tell someone about my very unusual good luck. - Gen8 General

Hi peeps, i had the USB on my Gen 8 101 go down literaly 2 weeks before my 12 months warranty was due to expire, so without delay e-mailed archos and got an RMA wrapped that sucker up and off it went. They took delivery of my pad and nothing untill the new year, so i mailed (nothing) then i phoned and got someone reading from the website and was told could be another two weeks. Then today i get an e-mail that went a little like this.
There has been a significant delay with the stock required to replace this device. Because of this we would like to offer you a free upgrade to theA101 gen 9 8GB (details can be found by following the link below), which is the direct replacement of the device you have and runs on Android 3.2, has a 1GHz dual core processor and as the device is certified by Google, it has access to the Android Market. Can you please let me know whether you would be happy to accept this upgrade?
To say i couldnt believe my luck would be an understatement. I dont usualy get luck like that, i'm normaly the one who misses the deadline for warranty by a day because the post truck broke down. Anyway i just thought that after reading so many horror stories and expecting the worse i would lighten the mood with a good story for a change. Sorry to anyone who thinks this is unimportant but i just felt that it needed to be said. Thanks.

Wow, yep that's really good luck!My gilrfriend just bought it (1.2ghz), it's really powerfull(smart bench score 3900 vs my archos 70 overclocked...1019 ) but it need a lot of tweaks, but for a xda user that's not a problem.
Btw....2 weeks ago I've won a Galaxy tablet 8.9', can't wait to receive it!

Nice win on the galaxy mate, its good to hear positive stories for a change instead of the usual complaints and horror stories ( not that they are unworthy). You just seem to hear more negative than positive sometimes.

Considering getting one, would like opinions...

So I am on tmobile with my SGS Vibrant and the sensation isn't getting me excited and the thought of waiting until near winter is killing me, and then I stopped and wondered why I didn't just get a tablet in the mean time?
The only thing my vibrant doesn't do that i wish it did was play dungeon defenders, and with 1gig ram and a tegra2 the transformer should play it easy. Plus I just want a tablet and being pretty darn cheap among it's competition without seeming to sacrifice much I just need the slightest push into trying to track one down.
Any downsides to getting a tablet and not upgrading my phone? Any downsides to getting the tranformer instead of waiting a month or paying a little more for something else?
Also I just read the pcmag review and was getting kind of annoyed. They kept saying it wasn't quite an iPad2 and complained about how the keyboard they got was buggy (iPad2 doesn't have that option, hell no one does), and that flash 10.2 is still in beta, but isn't apple pretty far behind in flash on their "mobile" devices?
Sorry, that almost became a rant. So opinions? Any one else who was like me (on the wall about getting a tablet) who took the plunge and now very happy/unhappy about it? I suppose I could order it on Amazon and would have time to return it, but I would like to know what I should be checking for at least so I can see if it bothers me or not.
Thanks for any and all help. I will now go look at the dev section and see if that gets me more excited or not.
I vote go for it! You wont be dissapointed. There are a lot of fun things to do with the tablet vs just a phone. Let your imagination run with this thing.
I was going to get the Galaxy Tab 10.1. But after finding out that it didnt have a microSD card slot that was a deal breaker. I then began to look at other Tablets. Then I found it. It had all the features I wanted and was cheaper than others. It also had an option for a keyboard that almost doubles the battery life. The decision was easy. I got my Transformer yesterday and I am super happy with my decision. Def go for it. Newegg had them in stock last friday at $499 free ship and no tax. I added a class 10 32 gig microSD. Came to like $570. Also tiger direct had the keyboards in stock as of monday. Have fun with your Transformer. Im very happy with mine.
Wow. When I posted this Amazon had stock of the 16gb model (which would be plenty for me), now they don't. Newegg does but there are no returns for refund (just in case).
I guess I will hold off for now since I am moving at the end of the month any way and shouldn't be splurging right now.
I ALMOST bought one earlier but so many people reported a lot of annoyances that I don't think I would get one without the assurance that I can send it back if I need to.
There's going to be annoyances with any device one gets, really. Especially with a first generation device like the TF. I really do suspect that some of the "problems" voiced are those of perception but, on the other hand, there are some bonafide issues that require addressing.
I've been fortunate, mine has been great. Rooted, Prime 1.4 and OC to 1.4. It performs quite well.
Shiznit... Amazon got more in stock, so I put one on my credit card... At least with amazon if I get it and feel stupid for having done so I get 30 days to return it... I think.
Otherwise I will be telling everyone how cool tablets are by wednesday and playing too much dungeon defenders.
However I already know to check for dust and screen bleed. Anything else to be cautious about? I probably won't pull out the magnifier glass or anything but I being a poor college student I don't want to regret my purchase (I will get the dock when school starts more than likely).
sound balance.
Flash is at 10.3 and Apple refuses to even consider it at the moment. The Android 3.1 update came with an update for the keyboard which it prompted me to install when I first connect to mine. No problems. Nothing close to a force close has appeared since I've had mine. Appreciate the product well enough I took some high resolution photos and did a blog post about it.

Does this mean like speaker placement, or speakers not being equal volume, or like imbalance in tones/pitch?
I've seen this a few times and am not quite sure what to not hope for. I guess I will have to pay attention to if the sound in general bothers me, but thanks.
And @4D, thanks, I will check that out. I hate how everyone bumps tech site reviews and makes it some what of a pain to find decent personal reviews (because, you know, I am not a tech site, I am just a person who wants to know what the device will feel like and not compare it to the ipad2)
see my thread "Still the new hotness".. I'm in lurve baby!!
I've had my TF for two weeks now. I have the 32gb with the dock. Bought it overseas in Australia (ended up being cheaper there than the US)! Apart from the fact that our company has complicated templates for MS Word and Excel, the machine is perfect. I've been able to VNC back into my full sized laptop several times, and it's really going to be a desktop replacement for me on the road.
I had an Asus EeePC prior, and loved that, and this is no different. My one annoyance is the right hand shift key, and that there is no keyboard shortcut for recent apps. However, the shift key is just a getting used to thing. As for the recent apps thing, if that's the only other issue, I'm doing pretty well!!!
Don't use up your upgrade right now on a phone. Wait till Christmas time when the nexus 3 will be upon us.

Not on contract at the moment, so I don't get upgrades. Maybe early next year I will go back on contract simple for a new phone (since the prices are getting pretty high on their own)

At last I have one!

I have been reading this forum for a lot of time, but have only recently began posting and following it on a daily basis, since I wanted a tablet.
I followed this subsectionbefore it even existed XD, suffered with everybody waiting for the TF to be released, then the difficulties on getting them, the problems with first OTA updates and the bugs / problems you guys have encountered.
Scared of the problems I began thinking on other tablets: the Iconia, the Xoom and Tab 10.1. The Xoom was the first out of my list, because of the high retail price, no stock SD support and "normal" screen. Then the tab was discarded... no SD, no USB, no HDMI... too much an iPad experience for me. But I liked the Iconia, and played with it (even before I could see the TF) and liked everything I saw... but the locked bootloader was a minus, and although I liked the screen I was sure the TF one would be better.
I am from Spain, and I wanted to get the tablet on my travel t the US. One more reason to be scared off the TF... what if it has any problem?
So I arrived to NY and had the chance to see the Tab 10.1 on BB. Went to J&R and saw 4 TF 10.1. Ok I'll think about it. 2 days later I came back and no one was available :-(. I asked then and they told me the following day were expecting both, the 16gb and the 32 gb versions, plus the dock. So I called them on the afternoon and they had them. I went there and picked up a 16 gb one (there were 5 the moment I arraived and just 2 when I left).
The unpacking was a disappointment: the plastic envelope was dirty and full of fingertips. The TF was like new, the docs seemed like someone hadbalready browsed them, and the charger looked new. But it was strange: I had read about problems with it and how you had to snap to parts together for it to work; but the one that came with my TF was already snapped (maybe asus taking notes of the problems?). And it was brand new.
Well, I started testing the tablet to be able to return it if necessary... Somelight bleed (not bothersome to me), right speaker somewhat louder than left one, but no SOD, excelent battery life, and updated OTA to 3.1 without a problem.
I can't be any happier. If anyone is, as I was, fearing the worst, don't hesitate anymore and get one right now!
Thanks to all the posters, since their excellent feedback helped me take decision.
If I can do anything for anyone, please just ask.
Regards.
welcome to the club.

IF you are not afraid to do so....Root your tab ( same as Jail-breaking pretty much ) and then you can fix your speaker problem yourself by visiting this thread.

Enjoy your new toy!!!!!
Went through the same road you have. And I am waiting for my set 16GB + dock to arrive to my shops (all of them have only 32GB version with or without dock).
I am just thinking that maybe I should wait a bit longer and get a 3G ver...?

Sorry for being so late answering you but I'm travelling and cannot get all the internet time I wished. BTW I was pretty near your location sunday and monday. Went to Niagara falls... Awesome! But I don't know what I liked most, the falls or the endless row of cars and bikes that I saw there.
Rooting is the first thing I want to do as soon as I can. Will check that solution to the speaker-bias.

My first TF came with the pieces detached. The second came with the pieces attached. I think they though that some users may be especially stupid or the mechanism especially flimsy and decided to eliminate the possibility of failure by conveniently snapping it together for you.
You can still detach them though I believe.
Fingerprints on the plastic are normal. It's happened with both of my units. Just happens when they're wrapping the units probably.
dont panic about the charger being pre-clipped ... lots of people have stated this
Hope you enjoy your purchase
thanks to everybody for the info.

Goodbye Asus! Can't say it was fun.

I've made a similar post a few weeks back but I thought I'd give this thing yet another try. Well...I'm done with the transformer. I believe this is the biggest piece of junk EVER made. Yes, I said EVER. I am currently on my 6th....read it again, 6th unit!
First 16gb model had a big bulge in the back. Took it back. Second was a 32gb and wifi died completely. Third had massive light bleed and rear panel clicked. 4th, again massive light bleed, so much so that around the edges, blue looked like gray as well as dust under the screen. 5th had a massive white blotch on the LCD to the left of center. Just picked up my 6th unit yesterday, and out of the box, a chip on top of the frame, dead pixel and firmware that doesn't update OTA. Installed update manually, but what if this is bought by someone who isn't well versed in android or computers in general and just wanted something to read books on??
Asus, are you serious with this thing. 6 units and you still can't get it right?? This is my first and I assure you, LAST asus product. Do you guys even have quality control at your factories? This is absolutely unacceptable. It's about a 30 min drive from where I live to where I bought this gigantic piece of crap. Asus, are you going to reimburse me for gasoline in these days where gas is more expensive than ever?
I am utterly disgusted with this product and in fact your company in general. Reminds me of the days when I went through 4 asus motherboards (each time, the fault was confirmed by a tech), and finally opted out for a Gigabyte which has been working flawlessly since day one.
I guess this is what we can expect when crap is built in China where workers cannot wait to finally finish their shift and go home.
Thanks Asus....for nothing. I'm wrapping this worthless piece of crap and exchanging it today for your competitor's product which for sure will NOT come with a damaged bezel. You are formally banned from my household.
And please people, spare me the "mine is fine" crap. Well..maybe YOURS is, but I've gone through 6. I should also add, that each time I was there I had to wait in line behind someone who was also returning theirs. The store admitted to me that qa on these things is THE worst they've seen yet, on any electronic device and so is the return rate.
Transformer = FAIL.
Was the package sealed?
Thanks for submitting a complaint to Asus Customer Care...wait that's right this is XDA. My TF is working great and Asus support has been awesome when I needed them. And the two Asus Mobos I've had work just as good as my TF going on 2 years now.

May I suggest that you stop buying open box items? Order from somewhere that takes care of the product rather than a retail chain OR when you get it retail, OPEN THE BOX AND CHECK IT BEFORE YOU BUY.
This isn't the place for ranting about your own failure to use reason and logic.

I would guess Apple though, since clearly the TF is the greatest threat to the Ipad that Android tablets have going.
Seriously 6? I would have stopped on the 3rd. I'm already planning on galaxy tab 10.1 if this one breaks the same way the 1st one does.
Sorry to hear you have had such a hard time with your Transformer. My transformer has nothing wrong with it except for very small light bleed, and it is the first one I ordered. I love Asus products personally, I have always found them to be reliable. I have built about 50 computers with their motherboards, cd drives, and video cards and have never had a single one fail on me, my family, or my friends. Guess we are just lucky.

What thing are you giving another try honestly? Trying to bash the transformer in the place where everyone loves the transformer!? Seriously take it up with asus as im sure most people in here don't care and don't want to hear about it. If we wanted to hear about this we would look under your first post, we don't need you reminding us that you suck at buying products and cluttering up the forum.
All I can say is the same as many others. I ordered mine from Tigerdirect, and aside from some small amounts of light bleed, I haven't had a single problem with mine. If you don't like a product, fine. I guess the first question is, why would you go back to a brick and mortar store multiple times to get a product replaced? Especially when almost every single issue you pointed out was rather prevalent in the first batch or so of the product? My guess is that you went back a number of times and got first batch products that all ended up having problems.
My suggestion, buy an apple ipad 2. Better to let you join all the other morons over there than stay here and complain. All I can say is that I hope you get an Ipad 2 that has problems as well, so you can just complain to Apple (who won't care at all).
Hm im still on my first one and no problems here other than a stuck pixel which I fixed and a dust trapped on top of the S on Asus top left of ybe screen but not on the screen itself. Sucks you had a bad experience this machine is a beast im even keeping it stock (for now) because everything is running so smooth and im experiencing no lag. Anyways i dont think you needed to make a thread bashing it I hope your next tablet sucks too

yeah , I completely agree with darkhawkff, why would you go back and forth six times to the same store, it could be that just completely wrecked the whole shipment themselve somehow . I got mine from tigerdirect too and the only problem i had was a littlest light bleed. Just stop complaining about your experience with 6 returns because i highly doubt anyone cares about your opinion of the TF and asus while we are on xda on our own TF that may have a little problems but we deal with it.
LMAO... Sounds like someone needs a hug?
I have a VS GTab AND the TF 101. Both have "issues". While I see that HC is still needing improvement, I am happy to go with the flow and see and be a part of the developement. I mean, come on, it is a sub $500.00 device. I think you would be better off with an iFad. Thanks for stopping by!
You, sir, have just made my Sunday evening Great work!
Meh. Find everybody that had a similar experience to yours, and it turns out you can't buy anything. Since we are here, my experience with Nokia reminds yours. Everything cool with cellphones, a mess with smartphones. 7650, power button stopped working. 3650, spent most time getting reflashed in assistance because it killed itself several times and the build quality was really poor.
Asus actually shared a factory with Apple, they made MacBooks, and there is nothing wrong with those.
Plus, as already mentioned, everything is made in China, even Apple (and people around here can fanboy as much as they like, but build quality is great) so that argument is quite weak.
I'm not telling you to get another TF, or to trust Asus again. But every company has somebody as happy as you... just that

Your a glutton for punishment I'd of quit on the second if I went that far. . Where did you find 6 of them at a brick and mortar store? Probably Frys ..if you bought anything there you were on your own anyway.

Go home....... Asus doesn't live here.
Why people whine so much is beyond me. If you don't like it take it back. Get something else no one cares it's not like it is ours.

Dev Thrive
I bought one of these, the device itself is great. One big problem...
It appears as though my thrive was a dev thrive. It has a custom rom and kernal on it. No android market or google apps at all. At first I figured I would just root it and put one of dalepl's custom roms on it. I was afraid to do so though, because in reading about how to root, it was very clear to only use the root tool with certain build numbers and mine is clearly not. Whatever is loaded on it, seems to be fairly stable and very fast...although it does go to sleep at times and will not wake back up. Has anybody heard of something like this happening?
You need to return this device. There is no way to update that load. It should never had been sent out with that load. The partitions are not standard and you cannot root it or load a custom ROM onto it.
I contacted Woot that day about returning it. They told me they had some in stock so they will be sending me a new one. It was interesting to say the least. Someone at Toshiba must have missed it!
Yes, I have talked to a few others that have received devices with the engineering load. I am supprized that Toshiba had let these slip out too. Not too supprised that a couple of Woot ones have it. These are remanufactured, but guess what, not by Toshiba. They have out sourced thier maintenance, so it is some outside company doing them. The tech probably checked that it booted and repacked it.
I almost jumped on that woot! Impulsive instincts were driving me to order one. I think the thrive has a lot of potential in the future. I'll stick with the cheaper hp touchpad for now and wait for tablet wars 2.0 this year for the shakeup before diving into a serious tablet with some horsepower.
I received my Thrive from Woot a couple weeks ago. I wasn't even looking for a tablet, but couldn't pass it up. This is my first tablet, and so far its pretty awesome. Glad to see there is a thread for it here.
Well thrive may be nice and for that kind of price its ok. (Tho i prefere my Toshiba Folio i acquired as 1st android tablet for 100$ in fact I love Toshiba brand... xD and the fact T device have a very good price/quallity rapport even on second hand)
Now brainstorming on: Foliomod 1.4 or waiting on a working ICS port (T device deserve waaayyy more love then they get atm :'( )

me and alot others went thru way worse than this with the prime. we feel the same way. best advice is don't let others dampen your great experience with device. don't let others try to convince you your tablet is defective like theirs. Reality is there will always be people who cry n complain. alot have valid reasons but some like to go overboard on the pity party. Then you will always have some devices that are going to be defective. That's the nature of the beast here, electronics. just enjoy your device n don't let the negativity get to you.
I happen to love my 300 honestly I think its better than the Acer a510 and the Toshiba excite 10. Apperently the excite has terrible light bleed issues.

Well its nice to see a few people being positive. I was going to wait for the tf700 to come out but it was too hard to resist for the price. I had the a500 and I felt jealous of my son with the tf101 with keyboard dock. Plus I had both tf300's rooted and build props updated in 45 minutes. I wish my phones were so easy.
No regrets at all. I am ticked that my sons tf101 got an update today with face unlock and we don't have it. Lol. I love it on my HTC Resound.
PS. Its nice to see the quick updates with Asus. 2 updates on the tf101 in a months time is pretty cool in the android world!
I'm pretty happy with mine, thus far. I had to return the first TF300 I got because it had a flaky touchscreen, but the second one's been working well. The only problem I've noticed is that the sound occasionally gets scratchy. At first I though it was a software issue, but now I'm leaning to it being due to a contact shorting when you squeeze the screen, because I've heard it making that scratchy sound when I do that.
All in all, though, I really like this thing. I can't ever see myself being satisfied with an old-school laptop after this. Having the choice of using it as a laptop or removing the screen and using it as a tablet is just wonderful.
Agreed. While not without a few quirks, the overall experience has been fantastic!

That's really pathetic, according to some suggestions here, we are suppose not only to enjoy but to keep a positive attitude towards our half-baked product. In a few words and based on the suggestions here we need to learn to deal with it and be patient waiting for Asus that eventually will get those issues fixed with a new firmware release.
If the tf300t were a $99 product I wouldn't mind, but I paid $399+$150(dock) for the fist tf101(RMA 3 times), $499+$150 for the tf201 preorder and now $400+$150 for tf300t.
I love ICS, and I love my tf300t as well and will keep it anyway to try new ROMs when they become available, but definitely will get a different brand next time(w/ different SoC, snapdragon or exynos), not Asus anymore.
My question to you would be.. would you tolerate a $550 laptop if it had half of the issues tf300t has.
Other than that I find it really hard to believe some of you have a 100% perfect unit.

I personally haven't found any issues with mine. All that people in this forum are saying is that if you aren't having issues, don't let the people who are having issues ruin your experience with your tf300t.
Yeah im running pretty good. No issues

Doing great on my end. My 3rd Android device. Use to the quirks of the software now. Much more patient these days than I was 2 years ago. Very happy as far as the hardware goes.
Really have to take forums for electronics with a grain of salt. People get disgruntled, hyperbolic, and very fanboyish.
I just like to vent once in a while
I have several of these.
All of them I got just over a week ago, and I have vented in the forums regarding the size limitations with the internal storage, and not being able to route or install new apps to the SD cards. I really do think this was stupid on the part of the manufacturer to put such a limitation in the devices.
However" even though I vent a little bit, I also have perseverance that most do not. Give up really isn't built into my fabric. With that said I like these systems a lot, and I will go through some hoops to get them to where I want them.
So far I'm very happy with these, and my son absolutely loves his. A little too much in fact, at the point where he is on a break from the tablet for the next week or so until all his MCAS and finals are done for the year, hehe.
I think most people like these that have them - people just get frustrated when they have to deal with some of the standard Android issues like Rooting, and storage.
Performance wise the TF300T is a excellent little piece of equipment.
If Asus made them come with Root right off the bat, and removed the storage limitation issue with the SD card so you didn't have to implement a work around for it. I would push for my company to get these.
Currently my company hands out the iPads and Motorola Zooms to every one so we can develop apps for both markets.
I feel the Asus is a far better product aside from the Root and SD card issue.
The SD card issue is a deal breaker on the company wide side of things though.
All and all, I like mine
nordis,
I love my tf300. No issues at all.

I'm rooted, updated, and re-reooted. Thanks for the heads up!
Eveything still running great... I did find a .25" stratch on the screen once there was a completely white background it exposed itself to me. Its not too bothersome but my OCD claws at the back of my mind about it.

You've got two options:
1) enjoy it for what it is
2) return it
I'll probably hang on to mine. Fact is, for all the QC issues that have arisen with this tablet, there's nothing else like it in the market today.
Yeah, if there were four or five other Tegra 3 tablet/netbook hybrid devices out there I might take mine back for the speaker issue and the display issue that's reared its head a couple of times since I've had it. But there aren't. And I'd rather enjoy this thing for the 98% of it that works the way it is supposed to than rant and rail and raise my blood pressure over the 2% that doesn't. You might not. And if you don't, then take it back. No sense in getting all worked up over a product that you can take back to the store for a refund.
I got mine today. Firmware updated and factory reset but seems slower now
