Upgrading my phone from Gingerbread 2.3.4 to ICS - Nexus S General

Hello guys, I'm new here, and I'm pretty noob at this things, but would like your help.
I've read around, and it says I should upgrade to the latest version of gingerbread before upgrading to ICS.
Marc Peng's Nexus S Information
Below are my phone specs
Samsung Nexus S
Android Version -------------------- 2.3.4
Baseband Version ------------------ I9020XXKD1
Kernel Version ---------------------- [email protected]#1
Build Number ------------------------ GRJ22
Service Carrier ----------------------- Wind
Found a good tutorial here, http://www.geekdevs.com/2011/09/howto-update-nexus-s-from-2-3-4-grj22-to-2-3-6-grk39f-manually/
Then from 2.3.6 to ICS 4.0.3
I use this file
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1398186
Can some expert please confirm with me? Please and Thank you =)

Assuming you have an i9020T or i9023, that is spot on. This thread will give you all the OTA links straight from google for i9020T and i9023 for your purpose.
Grab the 2.3.4 -> 2.3.6 and flash it
then the 2.3.6 -> 4.0.3 and flash it
then enjoy ICS goodness.
If you have anything other than the i9023 or i9020T, do NOT do this.

The 4.0.3 OTA is not stable and is not recommended. Please hold on and wait new OTA.
Anyway other customized ROM is recommended.

Not stable? Lmao stock is more stable than any custom rom....

can I not reupdate if I install the 4.0.3 ICS?
like if a new one comes out, I can just re update my phone right? Is there any defect or negatives in that? Please respond, thank you =)

It has been beautifully stable for me, but there are some issues with battery life. That seems to be mirrored across the forums.

You can still upgrade further, but downgrading generally requires unlocking the bootloader.
For best results I would wipe all user data, ie apps, settings, game saves, etc, prior to installing.

[GUIDE] 2.3.6 OTA - i9020t/i9023 - i9020a

Please be advised that this thread will now be dedicated to just the most recent updates that become available, as they become available. Links to older OTA's and official roms can be found here. Before posting regarding an update not working, please make sure that the update being listed is the proper one for your phone. If an update is listed for a model, it applies to ONLY that model. If you attempt to try it anyways, you will generally get a signature verification error with no error code. If you don't know what model variant you have, please check this thread to identify it
These updates are for STOCK phones. If you have replaced the modem, kernel or updated *any* of the google apps with unofficial versions, the updates will fail. When posting a failure please include the ENTIRE message, as the message will identify what is no longer stock.
ClockWorkMod and Root access will be lost due to these updates and will not cause any issues with updating the phone. Be prepared to reflash CWM and re-root your phone once done.
Most recent versions available:
I9020A -> 2.3.6 (GRK39F)
D720 (NS4G) -> 2.3.7 (GWK74)

M200 -> 2.3.4 (GRJ22)

GRJ22 (2.3.4) - > GRK39F (2.3.6) Released
Full ROM update -> GRK39F (2.3.6) Released
How to apply the update:
I will cover stock only, as those running Clockworkmod should already know how to apply an update zip.
Copy the update file appropriate for your model/build/modem to your Internal storage of your phone. Do not place in any sub-directory.
Turn off your phone.
While holding the volume up, press the power to turn on the phone
use the up/down volume to select recovery
press power to make the selection.
Your phone will now reboot into recovery.
When you see the little droid, while holding the power, press the volume up to bring up a menu.
Select "Apply update from /sdcard"
scroll down to the update file you downloaded it, make sure it's highlighted then press power to select
The update should go through

My understanding of the announcement is that older versions are also getting the update. What i suspect is that there will be separate files for each upgrade path. Meaning the update needed for 2.3.2 -> 2.3.4 will be different then 2.3.3 -> 2.3.4. The file versions we are seeing supports this.
As we find these updates, I'll get them posted in the primary post.
I'm assuming we have to re-flash the recovery with the stock one in order to get this update OTA?
thanks...flashed the update...now with 2.3.4
just hoping the bugs are fixed!
Require the download for i9023: GRI54, KB3, someone must have it!

I9020A is the Rogers/AT&T variant. I9020T is the T-Mobile version.
I have a i9023 GRI40 KB3, with Clockwork recovery.
Should I use Build GRI54/KB3 Radio/KA3 Bootloader or GRI40/KB1 Radio/KA3 Bootloader

Did you manually flash the KB3 radio? As far as I know, no factory installation of GRI40 ever had the KB3 radio. GRI40 was always paired with KB1...
Actually, I flashed CM7, so maybe that's where the KB3 radio came from. The thing is I forgot to make a nandroid backup of my original ROM, so I would like to get it.
Sorry I forgot to mention that.
So are you running CM7 or are you back to stock?
CM7. I can't go back to stock because I forgot to make a nandroid backup of it before flashing CM7. Thanks.
So if you're running CM7, then that's not where KB3 radio came from, but rather that's where GRI40 came from. Your i9023 originally came with stock GRI54 and KB3 radio, then when you flashed CM7, it kept the KB3 radio but downgraded your build since CM7 is based on GRI40, not GRI54.
In that case, if you want to be running stock, I would recommend flashing the 2.3.4 OTA full ROM package to your phone. It will give you Android 2.3.4 with the KD1 radio. It works fine on i9023 with KB3 radios. That is the only one of the ROMs that I listed that will work with your phone.
Click the very last link in the original post (under i9023, Android 2.3.3 (GRI54/KB3/KA3). That's the file you want. You can flash that in ClockworkMod and you'll be on stock 2.3.4. Because you're running CM7 right now, you will also need to wipe your data and cache, plus it'd be a good idea to wipe Dalvik cache too.
Thank you for your time sir!

They don't exist as far as any of us know. The closest thing you'll find is the Odin 2.3.1 firmware which you can flash in fastboot mode but if you want a signed zip of the full ROM that is flashable using the stock Android 3e recovery, unfortunately you're out of luck.

Having incorrectly used the wrong ROM from here to upgrade to 2.3.4 I have lost clockwork and super user. Also I can no longer connect in fastboot mode with ADB commands.
See here for full explanation
Any help greatly appreciated.
Acne
Is there a list of all radios that available?
And is it ok to pair any of the radios with any of the other ROMS?
I face constant 3g data dis connectivity with my telco here and thinking to try the different radios to see which one is better.

[Q] 2.3.4 update now vs OTA

I am considering updating to 2.3.4 now instead of waiting for the official OTA. The reason I hesitate is because to my understanding and flashing, updating via OTA (future updates) or SBF, will brick the device. also are there any noticeable bugs? I am curious as to what everyone else is doing. Just looking for feedback

Hi. My advise is this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1159385
it´s gingerbread 2.3.4 from a dev.
Don´t wait more on froyo...
I just unlocked and upgraded to the stock FR orange rom, canadian here, and i have to say 2.3.4 is much smoother. BTW don't expect the same customization from a stock official rom vs a moddified stock or custom rom. Just unlock your self and have fun

anyone else have this build number?

Atrix has stock Bell 2.3.6
Under Build number it says 4.5.2A-51_OLL-17.8
System Version 45.21.78.MB860.BellMobility.en.CA
Baseband N_01.07.05P
i hate motoblur and install cm9 on many of my rooted android phones. so which method should i use to unlock the bootloader? i have 2.3.6 and all guides have 2.3.4.. also my build number 4.5.2A is wierd. any help? please and thanks!

has anyonr from the UK had the 4.0.4 OTA?

Hi chaps
I bought my nexus from CPW back in january and I think at the time it was running 2.3.1 and it wasnt getting any OTA updates. I manually upgraded to 2.3.6 but haven't had the OTA for 4.0.4. Has anyone else from over here had it? I ask as I wonder if I will get it as i bought the phone sim free and I am using a vodafone sim.
Cheers
I bought mine from cpw also in January, and mine came with 2.3.1 i think as well, I manually updated mine to 4.0.3 but have not had a notification to update to 4.0.4, no idea if I will either, but all the updates were done using the official files off here.
Bought my NS from CPW on boxing day. Flashed manually to 4.0.3. and I'm totally at stock , no root.
Still no OTA. I'm on Orange.

I got my NS (i9023) simfree from play.com, came with 2.3, got various OTA updates to 2.3.7, got the OTA update to 4.0.3 in December, still waiting for OTA 4.0.4.
Don't really want to have to back everything up so I can root it in order to do the manual update process!
No for me - bought from CPW with 2.3.1 after 4.0.3 was pulled - manual update to 2.3.6 - no OTA. Running on TMOB.
Nope I haven't got the OTA yet, i9023 sim free on virgin mobile and android version 4.0.3
Bought my simfree Nexus S from CFW, on boxing day.
Using my O2 simcard.
Manually updated to Android 4.0.3 using official stock files from XDA.
Thus far, no OTA. :-(

Except that to do the manual update you have to root & unlock boot, and that requires wiping the device. I know you can backup & restore everything, but it's a lot of faff if the OTA is imminent anyway!

You only have to unlock if you want to flash it with a 4.0.3 recovery. And you never have to root it to apply a OTA update. 2.3.6 stock recovery will apply the update just fine without unlocking.

Incorrect - I already have 4.0.3, and under ICS you need root to do a manual update. If I had 2.3.6 then this would work. Under 4.0.3 it doesn't.

2.3.6 might work fine - but I have 4.0.3, which requires root to do a OTA update manually (see 'A NOTE ABOUT ANDROID 4.X OTAs' here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445635 )

Not true. You need to unlock the bootloader and flash CWM recovery. There's a difference between root and unlocking the bootloader.
yes, unlocking the boot loader is enough as you basically just need the cwm recovery.
But your data still gets wiped if you unlock the bootloader...even without root.
If you are going to unlock the bootloader and wipe the user data/cache, you might as well flash the stock 4.0.4 image with fastboot, and you don't have to bother with CWM.
Thanks, you're all correct, but as you say it still requires me to wipe & restore (which I wanted to avoid). I'm impatient, so I started to have a go at that but hit problems. I'll start a different thread to sort that out now!
So no one has received the 4.0.4 update in the UK??

I would like to find out too. But just to throw in some hope, I got my 4.0.3 OTA from 2.3.6 back in December via wifi. I bought my simfree phone on best buy, and I'm using the giffgaff (which uses the O2) network.
