Xoom beat the Transformer to ICS - Eee Pad Transformer General

So Engadget reported that the Wi-Fi version of the Xoom is getting ICS now.
Isn't that a little embarrassing that Motorola is beating Asus to the punch. May Asus is busy with all the Prime issues.

Yes,
but it didn't go well.

Really??? What happened?

i dnt really mind they got it first it is the original google experience machine, but i do think the mid february date is a bit extreme. i feel asus is dropping the ball o this one and i mean the whole thing the prime and its problems then its ics problems, now the what i feel is their update procss going from great to yeah whatever.....i aint even excited to get ics anymore, in fact if the devices start comin like i figure ill buy a new device before mid feb. i kinda feel like all of us that have supported asus for the last 8 months got dumped on for a few sales of the new prime.
and im sure somebody disagrees with me and thats ur right, i still feel the way i do.

i am sorry but seriously you guys? You do realize that the xoom is the equivalent of a nexus but a tablet and that its software has been on the asop tree for over a month now and its updates are released directly from google don't you?

so i still feel the way i do

I agree!!!

Asus has some hardware QA problems, but if you blame them for firmware updates, don't ever go near non-Nexus Samsung, non-Xoom Moto, or just any other android company out there! Asus firmware updates are the best by a mile. Even the Xoom had lousy updates up until ics.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda premium

Firmware updates... well, can't blame them, isn't Motorola owned by Google now or something?

Last I heard Google bought Motorola Mobility which is I believe their branch that makes their mobile devices like their Android devices. I assumed it was so they could release official Google Experience Devices instead of having Samsung make some of their devices (didn't Samsung make a Nexus for them?).
So it would technically get the update faster. Even though TF101 shipped with Honeycomb it came out later than Xoom, wasn't Xoom the first to Honeycomb also?
I don't see what separates the TF101 from the Xoom, is the TF101 not a Google Experience Device in reality or just by name/licensing? I don't see any major changes they made to the UI like Samsung did with TouchWiz. Do they also consider things in the backend? Maybe the bottom row buttons Asus changed was a problem? But really it seems like stock Honeycomb to me on the TF101 with no UI changes.

2 simple things to do:
1. get a xoom
2. stop annoying people with ur first world problems aka whining about a "delayed" update
seriously, another thread about this sh*t? how can some of you make such a big fuss out of ics? do you think yout tablet will make you coffee in the morning with ics? is it just to brag in front of your friends? or do you want to show the whole world that your benchark is now 100 points higher?

it's hard to tell which threads contain useful information or updates when they are named like e.g. "Xoom beat the Transformer to ICS"

my heart goes out to the galaxy tab owners.......
can't believe how fickle some of you are considering how new ics is in tablet form.
will be interesting to see how many people complain about bugs when it does land and how many people moan that they dont like the new features. probably the same children that have thrown the toys out the pram about the wait........sorry how many days has it been now??

Some sad news on XOOM

So Koush on twitter just announced he is returning his xoom.
which ****en sucks, i hope he is kind enough to give us RM when the sdcard is supported.
and also reports all over the net today say the motorola will stop production on xooms in June...OF THIS YEAR
this all kinda sucks in the eyes of consumers (me + you) for software developers and even accessories. I dont know, maybe im kinda freaking but, it looks as though the motorola xoom is the nexus one of android tablets....i just hope it stays that way in the dev world.
Today seems to be a dark day for the Xoom community as well. All these bad news about the end of production, people canceling Xoom orders for the new G-Tab, now Koush leaving. But life goes on and I love my Xoom! After all, the Xoom is just the vessel for Honeycomb, isn't it? And as long as the bee lives we'll be supported by great developers
Hey Honestly,
Koush is a cool guy and he holds a ton of weight in the android community and I personally respect him and his talent, that being said I could give 2 ****s about what he or anyone else buys, never buys, or returns, and so should everyone else.
Personally the Xoom does what I need it to, and I like it. Some people will feel the same way about the Ipad 2, some people feel the same way about the galaxy tab, and some people feel the same way about Cheese. Out of all of us whos right? Every single one
If you like the Xoom be happy with it, if not return it. Simple as that. My only request is you dont post on here about how awsome your new device is because honestly you can go post that in the forum of the new device and it will not make people angry or sound like your gloating
The Xoom is the Nexus One of the Tab community, because with all of these new devices coming out who knows how much bloat ware or sense or blur or other crap they will have on them. Samsung for one does a totally steller job of providing updates for their devices (thats sarcasm) so I wouldn’t buy anything from them, but again this is my opinion, and someone may totally love their devices and want to catch them all (just like the pokemon) .
As for Motorola, what they’re doing is pretty standard. Think about it they probably have been producing units since Jan possibly even December for a early march release, a 6 month production run in a market where every week a newer shinnier toy comes out I feel is pretty standard.
Thats all just my opinion hope it makes you feel a little better tho And in the great words of Bob Marley, dont worry be happy

Honestly, I doubt this is completely true. It just says that they are stepping down production, and with good reason.
Things like this happen all the time in industry. You build 1 million devices, and then you use your manufacturing capabilities to build other things while you sell down the inventory, then you start pushing out units again once you get to another level.
All this means is that they are selling alot less than they are making, which may or may not change when the wifi version is released.

I'm anxiously awaiting my Wifi order to ship from Amazon.
Motorola showed us in the past that if they don't make money with their device, they quickly stop to support it.
Knowing the Xoom is running on an early version of Honeycomb, this doesn't look good at all...Makes me want to cancel my preorder actually...

I really don't care what koush buys, he bought and sold the galaxy tab 7" in the same amount of time.
If he really cared about the xda community his bootloader would be open source...if he stops making it someone will step in and make one.
Edit: I know he does open source the code, but I'm unsure if the xoom support is in there.

I just got my xoom for the GPS maps and the turn by turn directions. It works good for that so Im keeping mine!
This is really one of the major downsides of the Internet. It used to be that somebody could have a knee-jerk reaction to something, but by the time it filtered through editors, producers, etc., and into the print and publication media it had already been toned down and made far more realistic.
Nowadays, somebody misunderstands or misquotes something, and five minutes later it's believed as fact by the majority of the population, which has been conditioned to get information in tiny little chunks without any appreciation for context.

This development might put the remaing xooms in high demand. Whatever happens I bet they will sell out FAST!. I am glad I allready have 2 of them in my home!. You know what they say..... a bird in the hand is worth 2 xooms on pre order at Amazon! LOL
i FREAKING LOVE my xoom. I have an ipad that also and I never touch it. Go android!!!
android ftw yo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTUwqxHpXMY
i love my xoom too and im pretty content with it. i sold my ipad, two weeks before the announcement of the ipad 2 (robbed the dude on craigslist)
my main concern at this point, and i think its to a certain degree, paranoia, that the pushing up updates, dev community mods and improvements all together will be few and far between.
after typing that i realize thats nonsense, motorola sliced off at least 1-2months of shipping delays by delaying adobe, the sdcard and the 4g...just to be ahead of the pack.
whether that option was smart in the longrun is a question for the finance people. but as a android geek im good with that, just as long as developers (like koush) still have at it.
Thank god Moto priced the Xoom so high that I(and other sane people) got the ipad 2. At least I know that Apple wont just drop their product like that less than 6 months after release.

Goodbye Moto, you suck & I hope we never meet again

I took delivery of my UK Xoom 3G on 2 May 2011 and fell in love with it. I knew it had bugs but I still loved it because love is blind.
I knew updates would come....I had a Google Experience Device so I just knew I wouldn't be left with a crippled device, so I kept on loving it.
Then 3.1 was released in the US. EXCELLENT I thought, in a couple of weeks we in the UK would also be shown some love by the mighty Motorola. It never came.
Other devices came late to the party and were given these mysterious software updates, my friends mocked me and my wife pleaded with me to get an iPad which would show me the same amount of love as I would give it, but I kept faith...I loved my Xoom you see.
Its now June 19th and Motorola have abandoned me, they refuse to talk to me and refuse to love me back, my poor beautifully built Xoom sits there happily force closing at every opportunity and I sit here pondering how my investment so full of promise has become a mere missed opportunity. How sad....Some relationships aren't meant to be and I for one will now be looking for a divorce. Bye Moto, I hope you can live with yourself
Sent from my Motorola Xoom 3G (now on Ebay)
I have a bit the same feelings like you...! I like my xoom really, but it piss me off that the NEW update policy of google only works in US well! Thats unfair, and this is one point why i would go to apple! Yes i have a lot of rules and things what i CANT do but i get allways software updates, for the next 2years / generations. And everyone gets the updates at the same time...!
And to Moto, Motorola should push google to deliver more update or make it like samsung to update apps over the market!!
For me at the moment, it was my first Moto device and the last one, maybee the last android...

I knew you were going to take it that way because that's how people think. I was referring to me overclocking, unlocking and rooting. Having a device that I can play with and not one locked down. Thats what I mean by the user.
Let me ask you this:
Do you have an Android phone?
Let me also add this:
If you would have said that you were going to a Transformer or a HTC View then I would have thought it was the device. Instead you said a iPad which means its the operating system and using the device that you don't like. Maybe your Xoom is defective. Did you try getting it replaced?

Yes I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 and its amazing. I also had a Dell Streak 5 and a Galaxy Tab (original) so am very used to the Android OS. I did not say I was getting an Ipad, I said my missus wants me to get one because she feels its the best available 10" finished tablet solution at the moment....
I have considered the Asus Transformer but I need 3G and a 3G version is not available yet. The Galaxy 10.1 is also not yet available in the UK. I do not feel confident rooting and installing custom ROM's and to be honest I shouldn't have to go down this route to get a working product, especially one which cost me £580

Ya it sucks that other country versions of the Xoom suck so bad that is lame. We don't do apple in our house as a matter of fact we don't even speak of it. Also I did not root to fix problems I root so I can overclock and backup my device. So basically you bring that baby home turn it on and its FC city, wow.
If you like your Xoom so much why havent you done what lots of others have done, Root it and Load the US Version, I have to say though its still not perfect.. There are no good Office apps out there so its far from being capable of being used for business. Facebook App force closes quite regularly, the mail app looks a bit mickey mouse and basic. What I wouldnt give for Thunderbird and Open Office on it!!!..
Non-US Xoom is not Google Experience device, thats what I read in many Xoom forum posts. So, thats why you dont get update directly from Google. I read from Moto forums that it will be updated in couple of months.
Granted, thats not good enough. Couple of months is way too long.

If i'd known on the 2nd May that it's wasn't a GED and updates would be this slow, I probably wouldn't have purchased it. I don't think anyone knew at that point!
People keep telling me to root and flash US ROM, but as well as losing my 3g and voiding my warranty, I'm not sure I want to risk it and why should I?

I'd be tempted to mention your dissatisfaction on the Motorola Facebook page too. Perhaps a little naming and shaming will push them a little harder, other than that, it may give other prospective European customers a little insight into the current support situation?
http://www.facebook.com/motorolaeurope
hey you guys I just popped in here from the transformer forum, I would think that google is not at fault with OTA updates only the state of 3.1 at the moment. my transformer was on 3.0 when it arrived on the first of June, and an update was available straight away. Ordered in the UK and shipped to spain. Same with my desire HD quickly updated to gingerbread. Its a Moto Thing.
Just glad Asus have gone down the same route as HTC, Great design and features just need the bugs in honeycomb ironing out now.
Just done mine this afternoon. Now on 3.1 with SD card support and 3G. Like you say though, shame I had to void my warranty in order to get a working device....
It really is a shame that moto has gone down this route of misleading its customers. I have owned a few android devices over the past 2 years from different manufacturers ; however the Xoom is my first device from moto and will most definitely be the last one from them.
The only reason that the US Xoom has gotten the 3.1 update (which isn't perfect, but addresses many of the 3.0 glitches) is because its backed by Google (GED)
Many many people outside the US have bought the Xoom fully expecting it to be a GED and rightfully so. Seems that once moto got their money the relationship was promptly ended.
I'm not sure if this applies to you, but over here, the Xoom does NOT come with the Google logo on the back.. this seems to be the indicator as to whether or not its a GE.

Well said.
Asus botched the HW by rushing it, and have already essentially announced its replacement. Sounds like they did the same with the ICS release also.
I bought an ASUS high-end laptop 4 or 5 years ago - it was not quite a 1st tier product; they cut too many corners. But to be honest, I barely missed Amazon's first pre-order; I'd have bought one if I could have (That early-adopter itch.....I was lucky in this case)
Thinking about Lenovo or Toshiba now, and giving the grandkids the Xoom with ICS; but will wait a couple of months until I see what is both hot and working in the tablet market.
Sad that Moto has no real new products at this point at least. Their problem, not mine.
Because their dev team is so much inferior to our EOS team and all Xoom Devs.
Remember what the Xoom was like when it first came out? Buggy, slow, and a browser that wouldn't stay running for more than 5mins.
No way the Xoom was ever that bad. It's like a train wreck over there. Not only the GPS, wifi, Bluetooth issues, also problems with touch screen and especially the display, which has developed very strong horizontal banding, mostly since the ICS upgrade Asus support sounds much less effective and concerned than Motorola.
I'm really glad I have a Xoom.

What about the end users? Does it serve them right that their $500 (or $600) tablet is now closer to totally unusable after the ICS update? As if their pre-ICS hardware issues weren't enough of a slap in the face. There is nothing "right" about their Transformer Primes having hardware and software issues and definitely nothing right about gloating about it. I'm not a Transformer Prime owner (I'm a proud fellow Xoom owner) but its not right to make fun of the situation. ASUS has nothing to lose other than positive mind share while their consumers are stuck with a very expensive paperweight.

ASUS has nothing to lose other than positive mind share while their consumers are stuck with a very expensive paperweight.

I agree, it's a sad situation for the TF Prime owners. Hopefully they will get a fix for some of the most egregious problems very soon.

ASUS owes their Transformer Prime customers a HUGE sincere apology. Make that two: one for bad hardware design choices and one for a horrible software experience. For example, their solution for the poor GPS reception is to remove it as a listed feature for the Transformer Prime on their website? Nice one.
Anything not done right is not worth doing at all...
1. I'm glad I returned my Prime and picked up the Xoom. The Prime is now $400 in some spots and I'd still pick the Xoom over it.
2. Motorola is smart for doing the soak tests.

ASUS asks what you love the most about ICS on facebook! Too funny!

Look at the pasting they are taking from their TF101, and prime owners!
I was reading that earlier. TF101 owners trashing them for not getting it, and Prime owners complaining about the bugs. lol
I would like to know who is allowing ASUS's marketing team to post that crap.
LOL. Bad question to be bringing up until after they release updates that fix the Prime and bring the TF101 into the ICS fold (hopefully stable).
That is some of the worst timing I've seen.
i come here once a day and hope to see a thread that says "ICS is RELEASED!".
L to the O to the L.
"What do you LOVE the most about Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich?"
could be a hint on the release date...

Two theories:
1.> Samsung hacked ASUS Facebook account and trolled a bunch of users.
2.> Some guy working in ASUS PR Department, ready to quit, on his last day decides to get even because someone stole his stapler.
Must admit I laughed at the irony of them asking us what we like most about it when alot of us don't know anything about it till we get it, I just sat there laughing as I added my own QQ to the end of the thing lol.
In future I think avoid ASUS, according to the aussie website for the TF101 its update-able to ICS and has been listed as that for about 2 months despite it not being true lol.
Was very pissed when I tried to hunter down how to patch it to ICS 2 months ago all because website says it can only to find out some idiot updated the product page months too early.
Wouldn't the ASUS site saying that when its not true be considered false advertising and/or bait and switch because the product you buy isn't update-able like the product info says?
yeh i had to chime in on that one...what a stupid question. But that would be cool if it were a Valentines day release (love) not likely tho they want to fix all the bugs that prime has get it stable and then release them together i bet
I don't trust Facebook/Twitter sources... theyre usually just somebody who does not know a damn about what they are saying.
As someone who waited 4 months for a GB update on my incredible from the first "expected" date... We will see it when we see it.
not that its a solid source - i had a chat with a sony rep regarding the tablet s and he has said that they are expecting ICS on their tablets by the end of Q1....... from his understanding from speaking to reps from Asus the mid February estimate is correct.
Ive spoken to the Asus rep in the past and hes pretty clueless so id never post up anything he tells me......... for example: he didnt know what ICS was - and when asked about the Prime just before it was released he had no idea what i was talking about Goomba
Facepalm for ASUS.
Maybe, just maybe, they will reconsider their approach to product releases and release date announcements. Let's face it, if they'd not released ICS for the prime before it had been properly tested, and if they hadn't promised ICS for TF101 before Christmas then they would have got the positive responses they were probably expecting.
They couldn't delay ICS for the Prime, because everybody was talking about the poor hardware design.
This problem starts earlier, when they rushed the Prime's hardware design to get it out on market first.
If they hadn't rushed the Prime, folks would've been a lot happier. Me included.

True but then on the flip side companys that are behind other companys in getting stuff out loose alot of customers and thats why they rush a junk one out the door asap cause it makes more monies which is the only reason company exists in the first place.

That only works for a certain amount of time, though. If you get a reputation for making bad products, people stop buying them altogether. I'm sorry, but taking a feature off the spec sheet because you found out it essentially doesn't work, but you don't want to put an investment into fixing it--and it could be fixed, for sure, the question is the expense--is the definition of making a bad product.
I'm curious, did anybody get a full refund (including sales tax, return shipping costs, etc.) from Asus for their GPS not working? They may have done, which would at least slightly mitigate the issue, but I've not actually seen any reports of that.

I'd like to know how the people writing for asus don't end up committing suicide after all the rude people yelling at them (about something they have no control over)
I am guessing that ICS will be released the 18th at 12:03:57 PM
Anyone that wants to make another guess?

Did ASUS cancel ICS on Transformer?

Post ALL ICS related information in the ICS Sticky ONLY ••• THREAD CLOSED ••• moderator
Hi, I saw some post on ASUS UK and ASUS Northamerica Facebook, that ASUS canceled the ICS on the TF101, because of lack of resources with the ongoing ICS problems on tshe prime.
Can somebody confirm this, or is it just a rumor?

Samuel Müller So sad, ASUS stopped ICS development for the TF101. Yesterday I called a ASUS Service Centre in the US, after been switched a few times, I got a service technician on the line. On my ICS questions he told me because the trouble with TF Prime they have no resources left for the Original Transformer TF101.
After the ASUS ICS announcement for the TF101 last October, the release was postponed many times and ASUS Singapore told the customers, that the prime and the TF101 get ICS the same day. Then it was postponed again to mid February and again to February/March. ASUS stopped the ICS adjustments for the TF101 in the middle of January. They where not able to handle both transformer, because of lack of resources then they stopped the ICS port for the TF101 completely. This is also the main reason why there was no official statement and confusion all over. Like · Comment · 2 hours ago ·
Colin Willson likes this.
Colin Willson I find this hard to believe, but at the same time it must be true. For Asus to not update an 8 month old product is terrible business. Asus has proven they are a horrible company. If this is true they should be ashamed if they don't release what they have done so far. about an hour ago · Like
Samuel Müller I agree, I was waiting desperately for ICS to install the new Google Chrome, and working VPN to OpenVPN and I wanted to use the camera and the mic with Skype. about an hour ago · Like · 1
Eddy Wolfyzero even if u do say that, and there might be a port to install ICS separately, is not the official and real version they mention, and as far I know in the US, if they don't give us something they did mention on package and online, it's a

I don't think "Samuel Müller" speaks on behalf of Asus and neither does a random service tech.
I won't believe any of this until it's confirmed by Asus themselves in an official way.
Also, I find it highly unlikely that they would cancel ICS. It's supposedly almost done and the backlash would be huge.
Just another guy getting his couple of minutes of internet fame. Moving on ...
I don't think Asus is really that stupid (well, I've learned that there really are stupid people.. but still..) to lose customers over a "lack of resources" ? I'm sure they'd lose more resources in not pushing an upgrade which should be somewhere in their cost-benefit analysis. In any case, let's not forget that Apple is a master at marketing, and that this is a perfect opportunity to strike at one of their competitors.. I'm not saying that these guys work for Apple, but if I were in Apple's company, I'd be telling my marketing team to go run negative publicity on Asus (discreetly, because Apple must be seen as above the rest and therefore does not need to market against people) because this is an awesome opportunity.
This **** better not be true. Its not our fault the Prime is a POS.

it is not true they posted a picture of a tf101g running the other day also stop making ics threads the very first post says not to make enew ics threads
It can be good news too, I can finally sell it without wait to the update.
Asus probably snagged many 1st time Asus customers with the TF101, by having some longer term support for the TF101, it encourages you to try them again in the future when the TF101 is ready for being replaced. Most people own their devices for many years, and are not the gadget obsessed junkies who change device at 6/12 month intervals.
So I am hoping this rumour and speculation is not at all true. Otherwise this is highly likely to be my first and last Asus product.
Come on people I can't believe you guys are falling for this crap. Some joe bloggs posts some crap on the us fb page and you lot take it as fact.
Mods please delete this tosh.
i agree to indie13, dont get panic cause of some posts of some guys.
just wait till next month, then we see what happened with the ics update
I wish they cancel ICS that way I'll sell my TF101 and get a Sammy and never buy a product from ASUS again...
Sony's already blacklisted
just as a little bit of personal experience:
I work in electrical retail and used the retailer numbers to contact Samsung regarding gingerbread for the galaxy tab 7" as it was the same situation for that tablet as it is ours now.
I spoke to a rep and someone from customer care and was told a time frame for the roll out........and to date its still not fully happened or if it ever will. If I.c.s has still not arrived by next Tuesday I will contact them through the same process but keep in mind the gtab scenario.
So the moral of the story is never believe what they tell you.
It's a bullsh#@ , asus south Africa just post a screenshot of t101 running ICS 4.0.3 ,

Good stuff is still worthless if you have no love from the vendor. Mark my words, asus does not care about it's past customers, only seeing them as potential future revenue, that's why the newer, shinier stuff always gets the upgrade, but the older stuff (same general chipset, not that much different), screw those guys, time for them to upgrade. It's the exact same greedy corporate mindset that apple has.
I took a risk buying the Transformer, but now i'm wiser for it. Definately won't be buying ASUS stuff again soon, and my next tablet/phone will probably be a Motorola.
