What are your thoughts on this new htc device and the WP7 OS and how does it compare?
Added poll ^
Well, we don't really know, as either none of us, so very very few, have even tested WP7.
Well the HD7 reportedly has less ram than the DesireHD 512MB over 768MB. And Runs of of the same CPU family that the HD does.
So at this stage the DesireHD looks better than the HD7 spec wise but its early days yet.
not 100% sure about specs but HD7 will be available earlier though its announced 1 month later than DesireHD, that's if DesireHD ever make it out of the warehouse...
It seems that the HD7 has a QSD8250 processor (same as the Desire) with adreno 200 GPU.
PS: Sorry for my bad english
nope its an MSM8250 chipset :-D almost identical to the CPU in the Desire HD

actually alex is correct, it uses the old snapdragon found on the desire, nexus one, evo etc. It has the old adreno 200 gpu.
So because of that, and 200 MB less ram, the Desire HD still is HTC's best specced phone so far.
i will wait till january february to see if there will be dual core processors if not i will buy some good htc
A full list of the specs of the WP7 phones at the WP event
Notice they say the HTC parts are MSM chips (second gen snapdragons like in DesireHD) and the others LG ect are the old QSD chips (like the N1, Desire , EVO)

Motorola will out their Tegra 2 in Q1 2011, while LG MIGHT roll out by the end of this year.
Im gunna wait untill i se how multi core mobile CPU's preform (battery usage / speed improvement). As i suspect we will have to wait untill the apps and OS are properly optimised for two cores.

Dalvik and most native apps are multi-threaded by design.
True .... so we should see huge improvements :-D but the Desire HD will do me for 12 monthes :-D

If Engadget is right on this, then Apache is right too.
The QSD8250 is the first gen chip used in the Nexus One, Desire etc.
The MSM8250 is the 2nd gen chip and has Adreno 205.
The difference between the MSM8250 (HD7 etc) and the MSM8255 (DHD) is that the MSM8250 is a "world phone" chipset whereas the 8255 is solely for GSM use.
It's very confusing - but assuming that Engadget is right, that means that the WP7 phones are as fast as the DHD (though not as much RAM) but are available to use all over the world.
Yes, MSM8250 is GSM/CDMA capable, whereas MSM8255 is GSM only.
No such difference between the two devices. The same 4.3 inch screen (almostly confirmed tft) But DHD is better than hd7 on cpu and gpu.DHD with 8255 cpu and hd7 with 8250cpu (which same as hd2) 756ram>512RAM So i prefer desire hd with android os

Did you even read my post? They are the same chips, just the HD7 chip has CDMA capability as well as GSM. Same CPU core, same GPU core. Same speed, same die size.
The only difference between the DHD and the HD7 are the extra 256MB of RAM! (and the OS and case etc.. and camera! (thanks wu5262!))
DHD seems to have more metal parts in its casing.
Either way I guess we'll be seeing a lot of ports between these devices

Why on earth would you want to put WP7 on an Android device.
However, I hope someone here can bring WP7 to the HD2. Now that WOULD be amazing!
Any info out there about this baby overclocked? Will standard overclocking tools work or does new software need to be devloped?
To overclock the cpu I think you'd need a custom kernel that allows it first. But if the bootloader is locked then custom kernels can't be flashed.
You won't have to worry about performance issues with tegra 2 for while though .
As if you needed to run Crysis on it?
Tough crowd this morning!
This site is here for getting the most out of devices. Rooting and removing bloatware increases performance. Customized ROMS increase perfomance and user experience. I merely asked about another tool for optimizing a device.

snapdragon was the best @ one time and most roms had overclock built in!
Snapdragon is the worst CPU for 1ghz. Even the TI OMAP is better than Qualcomm. The main reason wont buy anymore HTC phones is because of Qualcomm and there ****ty performance in phone in comparison to Samsung, TI, and now Nvidia.

Snapdragon is far from being the worst CPU, clock for clock. First of all, Snapdragon is not a CPU, is a SoC (System on a Chip), and the CPU core inside Snapdragon is called Scorpion. Scorpion is neither a standard ARM Cortex A8 nor A9 core unlike the CPU core inside the Hummingbird/TI OMAP/Nvidia Tegra. But it can be thought of as among the same class as Cortex A8 CPUs. The Scorpion has some big advantage over standard Cortex A8 core in some areas (e.g. floating point). The reason why many found the first generation (in Nexus One and HTC Desire) to be "slow" was that they look only at composite benchmark like Quadrant and/or 3D games. The first generation of Snapdragon has a rather dated GPU (Adreno 200) in it, and Adreno 200's 3D performance is honestly, bad. The second generation Snapdragon (Desire Z/G2, Desire HD) uses a much faster GPU, Adreno 205, making the Snapdragon 3D performance on par with Hummingbird and other current generation SoC.
So before you go again saying Snapdragon is the slowest "CPU", go do some reading, and think, before saying. Here is some good reading for you:

if you blindly trust benchmarks the Scorpion CPU in the 2nd gen snapdragons are quite fast... my G2 benchmarks at...
Quadrant: 2,700ish
Linpack: 52.69
Sunspider:2,257
Neocore:57
infact, all of those benchmarks either match, or surpass the Atrix 4G.
No problems here with my snapdragon 1Ghz. linpacks constant 42+
Now that the phone is rooted can we use setCPU to underclock it so to save battery.
Or does setcpu not support dual core.
Also is what I said above true. if we have root we can underclock without putting custom kernels.
The nvidia tegra 2 kernel does not have a simple method to modify the CPU freq table. The dev working on the gtablet kernel would be a good resource to ask, his name is Pershoot. From my understanding he would have to backport the original ARM scaling which is not trivial in the least.
Maybe someone can figure out another way.

Serious bragging rights right there.

Guy 2: "Yeah well I can run it on my cell phone...look."
Guy 1's Girlfriend: "Take me, now, Guy 2!."
You get the picture.
Sorry to go off-topic there. But I do have a question. Isn't the Tegra 2 ARM9 based? And there's nothing wrong with wanting to push a device to it's limits. Overclocking is fun.

Is there a simple way to backup all the apps installed on my phone so I can just dump them instantly into a new phone? Preferably without having to hit "install" for every app on the market.

Hi every1.

It is QUITE interesting to see that the Flyer scores so much higher in GPU compared to the Desire HD...
Could it be there are improved GPU drivers? Could this be the reason HTC Sense 3.0 is coming to the Flyer but NOT the Desire HD?
If this is the case, maybe some developers could get something valuable out of a possible Rom dump?
Any Ideas?
It might not be using the same GPU, that's just speculation according to that site
Due to the much higher res, it would also need a much better GPU to get higher scores, I doubt it's using the 205 looking at those results and that res

Yes but Qualcomm (as far as we know) doesn't have any single cores with the 220.
Which is why I assume it has to be the 205. Or else Qualcomm made an exclusive for HTC?
In that case maybe HTC does have a point saying that parts of Sense 3.0 wont make it onto the Desire HD line because of hardware limitations...
Hm...
From what I've read over the net, the Flyer is running a dual-core clocked at 1.5Ghz? Which leads me to believe it'll be an Adreno 220.
I would be very disappointed the Flyer won't ship with a dual core chip given the competition. At minimum I'd expect the same specs as the recently announced HTC Sensation.

It could also be quad-core with three cores locked, but I doubt it I think they would have advertised it as dual-core if it really was that.
Like someone else mentioned, the Flyer is using a single core for sure and most likely the same GPU as the Desire HD.
I would speculate that the score is so much higher because the Flyer is running Gingerbread. Gingerbread was said to improve graphics performance with better driver support, and maybe HTC decided to optimize their Adreno drivers too which probably explains the jump in performance.
To be honest this actually makes me a little more excited for the Gingerbread update coming anytime now because we'll probably get the same improvements

I stand corrected! I just had a peep on pdadb.net and it's reporting a single core 1.5Ghz chip with Adreno 205 GPU in it. Obviously take that with a pinch of salt, anything can happen from now till release day.
If it is running an Adreno 205, then lets hope they have developed an optimized driver that can be ported.
Has anyone (I say anyone, I mean devs) had a look at the Xperia Play GPU drivers yet? Same chipset, but apparently heavily optimised drivers. I think LeeDrOiD was going to look into it but I'm not sure if he got round to it.
+1
Even an employee in Qualcomm said that the graphic driver in desire hd is somewhat "immature"
But there's another possibility, the flyer may use dual channel ddrs which makes its memory bandwidth doubles the dhd, and we don't have dedicated vram, so.......?

Sensation in smartbench is even weaker then i9000 in gaming. But GLbenchmark tells differently, it shows 3rd gen snapdragon is faster than tegra2 in graphics(optimus 2x)

its same msm7227 chipset, just turbo enabled... I have a tab, ZTE V9C with same processor, it overclocks upto 864mhz and works like a charm! And btw it has dolby too, on gingerbread!
If any developer wants, he/she can take its image and port dolby, since both the SOC's are not much different!

I've owned both S2 n Sensation I had Sensation XE so it was clocked at 1.5Ghz by default. That's why it was recommended and now 1.7Ghz coz One S Indians version has same chipset but clocked at 1.7Ghz. So that chipset can be OC'd without damaging. And on S2, everything's so smooth even with broken stuff on exynos that one simply does not talk about OCing
Yup, S2 isn't necessary to OC. Never felt like it's working too slow, even thinked about selling my S2 and buy worse LG G2x and save money, but saving it the other way, not buying new phone and holding S2 for longer. Really I don't get why people need to use quadcore CPU when IMO dual is efficient enough. I always flash different kernel/software just to save battery, even was working on CPU with UC to 600MHz per core.
HTC One S interests me most, but I don't have time for any deals and swapping. And this need to be said: Sense is awesome UI and all developers working on HTC phones, because they always try to port latest version unlike S2, which had very low interest in getting JB from S3 port or w/e other softwares except miui, aosp etc. (haven't said features ported like multiwindow now or note gallery are for nothing, they are also cool and thank for this). Liked it more than TW, but just thinking now, TW is user-friendly and not like first impression when it sucked for me, got familiar with it pretty fast.
I had previously Galaxy ACE which was clocked at 800 MHz which i felt was not efficient in running ICS ROMS so overclocked it to 900Mhz.. symptoms like overheating started to crawl in.. But in S2 i never OC'd I never felt it as slow sloth.. In jelly Bean i feel it lags sometimes, ICS and GB never lagged.. I dunno abt HTC but they made ICS run flawlessly on Desire C with 600Mhz proc!! So then i thought OC s for gamers, for normal calls, msging i think OC is useless...

hmm I think even after more than a year (actually its going to be 2 years) S2 is still performing great with no lags and problems and the Exynous 4 is doing a great job .!
Some quick points here.
The CPUs used in the SGS2 (Cortex-A9) and the HTC Sensation (Qualcomm Scorpion) are vastly different beasts. One of the most consistent ways to measure a CPU's performance is in DMIPS. An A9 puts out 2.5DMIPS per clock cycle. A Scorpion puts out 2.1. So, at 1.2ghz, an A9 puts out 3000 DMIPS per core. At 1.5ghz, a Scorpion puts out 3150 DMIPS per core. However, A9 does true symetrical multi-processing whereas Scorpion does not. This means that in single threaded applications, a 1.5ghz Scorpion will be about 5% faster than a 1.2ghz A9. But, in multi-threaded applications, or in multi-tasking environments, the A9-based SOC (Exynos) pulls ahead. That's why HTC users tend to need to overclock more often. They were behind right off the bat and needed to compensate. In most cases, the A9-based Exynos at 1.2ghz is as fast as or faster than the 1.5ghz Scorpion-based Snapdragon S3. And, that doesn't even count the GPUs in these phones.
Also, someone mentioned that HTC has better developer support, having developers port newer versions of Sense to older phones. There's a reason for that. When Samsung updates their older phones, they include many/most aspects of the newer TW UI (such as the SGS2 now getting the Nature UX). HTC rarely does this, so WE have to do it for them. Hell, my old Droid Incredible had Sense 1.0. The slower Desire Z (and variants, like the Merge) got Sense 2.0, but we didn't. The next lineup of phones got Sense 3.0, and we didn't. Our Android 2.3 looked and acted the same as 2.2 and even 2.1, just smoother. So the community has to backport these features. With Samsung, they do it for us in many cases.
oc is not worth it, with this kind of powerful chipset. i even tried it (1,5 ghz) but i only realized a higher battery drain and just minor speed improvements.
