I'm very curious as to what other people are now using as their default ROM on the Sprint Hero...I've got a feeling that ROM development is slowing down, and will probably move to the EVO (I'm way off an upgrade)
I've been through (almost) every ROM I think, and I've ended up with the following setup which is nice and speedy.
Kernel = 2.6.29-G0DmOdE-OC
Build = fresh toast v2 beta 2
I tried enabling jit, but was getting worse fps results on neocore than with jit disabled.
I'm running Launcher Pro, and everything feels really good.
DarchDroid 2.6.4 stock.
Loving the 20 hour battery life on it.

Same as you. However, I know flipz got the evo so I only expect maybe one more update to fresh rom. Only problem I have is that if I don't reboot the phone for a couple of days the phone app will crash when someone calls. I just reboot my phone every other day so it isn't a problem but I will probably be switching to a different rom as soon as I figure out who is sticking around and still developing... or maybe I will figure out how to cook my own rom since I will have more free time on my hands.
FreshToast as the daily, w/ any Darchdroid latest release as backup.

ZenEXP with GodMode. My own mods and theme. Speed is great, though I get horrible lag sometimes as with any ROM. It's just the nature of the Hero.
I too settled at ZenEXP. Sense is fun again and modes and multiple themes makes it customizable without dedicating a theme by flashing it.
Second choice, and may reflash one day would definitely be Darchdroid. That Rom is amazing with all the work put into it. It's crazy fast and looks hawt.

I run regawmod on a daily basis, his latest themed version. Runs clean, lasts a good while on the battery and I like the theme work
I'm now running DarchDroid 2.6.4, the only OC'd ROM that will run on my phone (not that I want any other ROM, as I hate Sense UI with a burning passion).
I just got the Hero not long ago. It's my first Android phone so I'm stuck with it for a while. I'm interested in possibly making a rom. Looking over some of the guides right now. So whatever I do I'll be sure to post it to xda. Right now I I have 2.1 rooted.

I am being issued an Aria by ATT to replace my Alltel Hero.
How do you all like your Aria? Does it run smooth with stock ROM and Sense?
My Hero was kinda sluggish and I ended up putting Cyanogenmod on it. I am looking forward to going back to Sense with my new Aria.
Love it!!!!!!!

I love my Aria. I've been on the stock ROM since day one and I've updated my unit to the stock Froyo ROM. I have to say its pretty slick and runs quite smooth for the most part. If you're using it primarily for work, I don't think it'll be much to complain about. I do have to note at this point, my phone isn't an AT&T phone so I don't have all that bloatware
I hope you enjoy your Aria as much as I do mine.
I had no problem with the stock htc sense it worked perfectly and was very fast imo. I just wanted to mess around with the phone so i rooted and flashed it. But I have no problem with the stock
I love mine. I recommend rooting it and flashing a custom ROM - Liberated Aria if you like the stock Sense UI, CyanogenMod if you want to have more of a standard Android experience - to take full advantage of the phone. But either way, stock or modified, the thing is a joy to own and use.
Haven't had this phone for very long, but I already love it.
Comparing this to the iPhone and Samsung Captivate, I would choose this simply for its size.
Just put on Liberated Froyo.
It was quite simple to do, and now I don't have att's **** stuck on it, and I can actually install apps.
I would highly recommend this phone, that is, if you don't want to wait for the new ones that should be coming out soon.
Solid construction and relaiable - I never turn mine off. I use it when working out - sometimes intensly (Triat training). It has taken some spills and keeps on rollin!
Definately use one of the ROMs found on these forums - I choose Liberated Froyo.
I would also recommend a CPU tuner as some apps are a little slow & jittery on the Aria (ie Angry Birds) - I use Overclock Widget to control the CPU and it has solved all the jittery apps.
a little small but it has its advantages for being its size, to be honest i get a little tired of typing messages on this screen.
stock rom runs great, att bloatware sucks, rooting it is a piece of cake for this phone though and attn's liberated froyo is even more awesome than stock.
overall no problems, used it for about 7 months now, just a little annoyed at the small screen.
This phone is amazing. I'm extremely happy with it. And it even has gingerbread thanks to the guys over at cyanogenmod.
It's great to be able to run Froyo-only apps on the roms here...otherwise the stock one is competent.
Excellent phone. Like everyone else has said, it's great stock, or rooted. Very smooth. I choose to run CM7 nightly's, overclocked to 864mhz with profiles. Just like butter!
Thanks guys, I am so looking forward getting my Aria. It sounds like a pretty decent upgrade over the CDMA Hero.
This Liberated Froyo ROM, does it have a webpage with all the features it has?
And you can overclock these things to 864mhz? My Hero is slightly overclocked, like 528 to 620 something with CM6 ROM.
Yes you CAN oc it up to 864. But nothing above 806 is recommended. I usually keep my maximum at 767 but it runs just fine at the stock speed of 600.

great little phone, not the most powerful, but for its size, it packs everything you need, and plenty speedy. especially with the cm and liberated roms which makes the experience even better.
Love it. No lock ups Yet, ive flashed a few different custom roms, and i do like liberty one the best.
so far.
but yes good phone.
It's an amazing phone. If you have a Hero, it's the same size, so you won't notice much of a difference. Everyone says it's not very powerful, well, it's a beast on it's own right, especially if you overclock it to 806mHz (I'd recommend that, any more is too fast and drains life of the processor), and it's a piece of cake to modify! CM7 is the best, CM6.1.1 is good as well. If you like Sense, I'd recommend Liberated Eclair, and not Liberated Froyo. Liberated Froyo's battery will last you eight hours if lucky.
The only issues I have are the fact it's quite easy to chip/shatter the glass and the battery life is weak unless you use CM, imo.

Notice your mix of applications and usage pattern will affect battery life. I am running Liberated FR008 with the HTC HK kernel and I can easily get over 20 hours of usage out of a charge. I have 3 emails accounts with background sync always on; 1 using MS Exchange, one using Hotmail and the third is my Gmail account. I always run with wifi turned on since I have access points at both home and work and I also have BT turned on.
Hi guys,
It's been a week since I installed CM7.0.3. I think I can write down pros and cons of both roms. By the way I tried dk and joker but didn't find them stable.
Here it goes;
Speed:
CM7 hands down. Butter smooth.
Stock rom isn't too bad but lags 0.2 seconds when opening stuff which is a tad annoying. Also laggy with angry birds. (i don't play games, just tried it for testing)
Stability:
CM7 is good but not as stable as stock froyo. Froyo keeps runing and running. CM7 has crashed 3 times in a week.
Battery life:
I am getting 30 hours with CM7. 55 hours with stock froyo. (same cpu speed)
Common Apps:
This is where stock rom wins as well. CM7 Gmaps and Gtalk fonts really suck.
It may not be a big deal for some users but for me it is a big problem as I use these apps at least 5 times a day.
With stock rom skype is unusable. CM7 wins here if you use hands free option.
Radio: (reception)
I can't tell the difference to be fair. wifi, gps, cell. they all feel the same. Stock gps is definitely more battery friendly.
Customization:
CM7 wins again. Stock froyo is not customizable unless you install shed loads of apps on it.
Conclusion:
CM7 is like an aston martin. If you get one you'll have a big grin on your face. On the other hand you'll spend a lot of time waiting for a recovery van on the side of a motorway.
Then stock froyo must be a good old toyota corolla. It always gets you there. Not in style though...
Haha, good comparison.
I would say battery life is pretty similar, not any significant gains over stock rom though I will tone down the cpu frequency further in standby as I have noticed CM7 is better in this aspect.
I would agree with the majority of your comparison though, nice balanced review.
I get good battery life from CM7, because I use SetCPU and smartly set profiles. (low battery=low cpu clock, screen off=low-ish cpu clock...)

I experienced some problems with setcpu. On low cpu clock setting, when I receive a call it takes 3 rings for the phone to realize it is receiving a call. Which makes me miss lots of calls.
That's a drawback of setting the min speed too low. Which is why I keep it at 245.
BTW, it is not recommended to use SetCPU anymore, because it may clash and cause issues with the default CM Settings. Keeping the governor at Smartass under CM Settings, is equivalent to having a profile in SetCPU for Screen Off.
i like CM7 very much, but with FroYo my battery (with wifi or data on all the time, and juicedeffender) was last for 2 days... now, with wifi (not all day) its like 1 day max.... very disappointing... :\
Nice comparison, I mostly agree to this. I haven't noticed any crashes so far (been using for ~a week now) and my sd card loads faster on reboot.
I really like using CM7, and there's no going back to stock froyo.
I'm running CM7 nightly for quite some time now and I can say it works even better.
Running it overclocked at all times, lasts a day or two depending on how much I stress the phone.
As for camera I flashed the MIUI camera which is a lot better then stock CM7 one, image quality and speed of the app is marvelous.
Just like you said, it's highly customizable; I wouldn't go back to the stock one anytime soon

You can say what you want, but for me, even stock rom is faster than CM7, especially in settings menu (scrolling), but of course applications is a different thing (if you have enough patience to find one)..
CM7 looks dull and takes the punch out of user experience.
Battery life is not a issue if it is more than a day.
Ultimately what sells is user experience and hence hTC Sense wins.
you can't compare stock froyo with aosp gingerbread

Sorry, can't agree with that at all.
You just need to run a benchmark app to see cm7 is way faster than stock even without over clocking.

The Nexus S is quite possibly the best but most frustrating phone I've ever had. I love the hardware and the android OS. I still get random reboots, sometimes sms notifications never show up, and sometimes when I get a phone call the phone becomes unresponsive.
I've been using the latest NSCollab rom for several versions and have never over/under clocked. I clear the dalvik cache after every update and clear data/restore with titanium backup whenever necessary.
I'll feel like I've been doing everything correctly, yet I'm still left with a phone that gives me a lot of grief. What's the problem here? How can I fix this? This is extremely frustrating with no obvious solution.
I had a lot of problems with the nexus s... Now i have a galaxy sii, but i still have the nexus. Using the nscollab, i had a looooot of problems, now the phone are with the stock 2.3.4, in my tests, everything is fine. I will sell it now.

I don't know what kernel that rom uses but that and settings on voltages make the whole difference in stability. Something like stock rom with stock kernel or cm7 with stock or netatchys kernel are always good choices and will give you stability.
Just IMHO

I believe NSCollab is Cm7 with netarchy and the stock gingerbread launcher -- nothing crazy here.

NSCollab 1.0.35
Android : GB 2.3.4

Kernel : Netarchy CFS 1.3.4 [Netarchy]
Truth of the matter is that I've yet to come across a ROM that's rock solid. I've tried them all and always had either lots of random reboots, bootloops, or sluggishness.
I went back to stock last Thursday and it's been butter smooth since. No problems or anything of the sort.

All I'm saying look into your voltage settings. Each phone will work different and you have to play with adjusting them. It also takes some time and patience.

no ROM I've tried has ever compared to stock, especially 2.3.4, when it comes to stability.
I tried Many ROMs but all before 2.3.4 (end of April?) and none was able to run for more than a few days without some kind of reboot/bootloop etc.
2.3.4 has been running flawlessly ever since.
Current uptime is like 1100+ hrs and that too cause i had to remove battery to change SIM card.
Hi,
I have installed NSCollab 1.0.35 on a week and have not problems on my Nexus S.
To resume, i had some endless bootloop and a lot of reboot on long calls.

My 2 cents:
I'm on NSCollab 1.0.34, Netharky 1.3.4, KB3, OV to 1.2 Ghz, UV with protonvoltage. Gingerbread 2.3.4
I find this combo much faster than the stock one, smooth and pretty stable. Actually I have some reboots when I stress a lot my device, but they are rare.
So I don't want to renounce to Cyanogen features as the stock rom was really slow IMHO and I will give a try to NSCollab 1.0.35 very soon!
No problems in answering, good radio performance, faster than light (quadrant score: 3600) !! I can survive with a couple of reboot in a week!!

Why don't you people stop confusing CM7 with a stable ROM? CyanogenMod and netarchy kernel are probably the most crappy android software that were ever made.
I suggest you use Oxygen ROM and Jame Bond kernel. No fancy quadrant benchmarks, stock ROM with basic functions like notification power control and text reflow in browser, zipaligned and all that stuff. Delete setcpu, delete juicedefender and other crappy so called battery savers, do not undervolt and do not touch the CPU frequency. Just let the ROM run like it is supposed to, don't fill it with all the bloatware you find on market that is said to increase performance or battery life, all they do is eating system resources.
I have yet to find a better combination like this for the nexus S, I am using the ROM since 3 days now without a single reboot/FC/freeze/bootloop. I am playing order and chaos MMO 2-3 hours and I can go through the full day without problems, the phone is responsive and simply works, no fancy sh*t.
Using the stock, all is fine..

So, I'm toying with the idea of flashing CM7.1 RC1 to my i9020t
currently it's on stock 2.3.4 + netarchy stable, it runs very smooth like silk after some manual optimization.
most games runs really nice, but there are still a few that are laggy, so i was planning to check out CM7.1 RC1 to see if it runs any better.
However, there were old reports of issues with the CM7 and missing features, etc, etc, or some other that reported CM7 being even slower than 2.3.4 stock, so i'm not so sure if i want to spend all that time flashing stuff around
I only flash stable version of ROMs as i have limited free time, and can't really afford to be jumping back and forth between versions, as the little mods and tweaks, and customization takes several hours most of the time, and it's very time consuming, yet not something i can afford in a busy day.
It just happens today is a nice day to flash a ROM
anyways... here goes nothing...
starting with a Nandroid Backup before I mess around with CM7.1
the stability is not at the same level. With CM7, my phone would reboot on it's own every other day. Car home would lock the screen rotation, requiring a reboot. some of the features are nice, like the per permission restricting of apps. The debug code being enabled will cause (for me anyways) a heavier battery drain. I prefer stock with root.
I'm retesting CM7 because of the failure of 2.3.6 to fix a major bug and in the process introduce more issues. I'll probably role back to 2.3.4.
Sent from my Nexus S
i finally got time to flash it today, so i'll keep an eye on it for the next few days, to see how stable or unstable it is
CM 7.1 RC1 + netarchy 1.3.7 cfs @ 1300
and also i'll have to keep an eye on the battery drain
the stock 2.3.4 + netarchy was very good
REVIEW conclussion
so far only 1 non-random reboot, it was actually caused by an app, that was force closed.
however performance wise, as i feared, CM7.1 RC1 is quite a bit slower than stock 2.3.4
Games laggs way more in CM7.1 RC1 than on stock, even with all the CM7.1 eye candies and customization disabled / enabled it was the same result.
Also battery life was extremely bad!, as in you can actually see the % numbers drop in front of your eyes, as you run Apps / Games on the phone even with the charger plugged in!
on stock the numbers will go up, not down, when the charger is plugged.
yes, this pretty much means, i'll be going back to stock sometimes later today when i get some time to re-flash the whole thing again.
I'll be looking forward to try CM7.1 final / stable when and if all the CM team have settle up with their daily life to go back to normal and make the project go forward again, until then, i'm not planning to waste more time with CM7.1
Don't give up until you've run it with the Trinity TUV10 kernel.
hmm... it's worth a shot
heck might as well, lets see how the CM7.1 RC1 + Trinity plays together.
according to what i read already on the topic, seems like it'll be a disaster for battery life
but if performance is good and fluid, i think i can over look that.
Trinity Kernel conclussion
well CM7.1 RC1 + Trinity TUV10 certainly makes a much better combo than Netarchy
using Trinity, even the heaviest of games runs smooth without jitters (very important for racing games, or shooting games)
the most impressive thing is that it's doing all that at stock clock speed of 1 Ghz while Netarchy at 1.3 Ghz was struggling.
Unfortunately on the Battery side of things, it's still just as power hungry as any other custom ROMs, although not as bad as Netarchy.
well... i guess i'll be hanging on to CM7 RC1 for a while longer, at least things are playable now
Poor battery life is a common complain after flashing a new ROM (and wiping 9 months of battery stats). Give it a few days to rebuild the battery history, and see if it's more to your liking.
I would try one of the newer nigthlies they are quite better than rc1
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium
the nightlies are better than RC1, that is for sure. a lot more work has been done since RC1. also, i recommend the latest Trinity TEUV kernel--> http://goo.gl/roLqV its at 880mhz, feels like 1.2ghz, its gpu is overclocked to 240mhz, and its undervolted. so its very fast and its great on your battery life. and it goes well with the latest cm

Question, if I install a CM7 nightlies ROM or a different ROM and wanna install a kernel like Trinity and then do a nandroid backup after that I'd be able to do it even if I installed a ROM besides CM7 like NSCollab or SuperCM7 right? And how would the order go, wipe > flash rom > flash kernel > do nandroid backup before restarting the phone? Thanks.
In my experience the RC version of. M7 is much less buggier than nightlies. I'd get random reboots, apps freaking out and BA battery life. Been on cm7 RC for 3 days now with not a single reboot. I'm also using the stock kernel that comes with it.

My MT4G was blazing fast and had nice battery life in regards to an Android phone...but ugh CM7 on my S is kinda laggy sometimes and battery life is a disaster. I need a reccomendation for a really fast vanilla ROM to flash. Always loved CM and it's never disappointed me until now. I just don't get it, I mean I thought the battery life on my Nexus One was terrible but it's draining even faster on my S.
