Nexus S Slow To Refresh - Nexus S General

I've been noticing that my Nexus S seems to be slowing down when coming out of apps. Same thing happens sometimes when I go into the gallery. I get the feeling it is taking a long time to refresh USB storage.
As an example... I could have just left an app and then the app drawer will just be black... so that the only thing I see is the on screen button to bring me back to the home screen. Then after some moments pass all the apps will show up again.
I don't remember having this problem before. Is there anything I can do about it?

There are about 10 other threads asking the same thing in the Q and A section.

Noticing the same thing over the past few months. Guess it's time to search for those other threads.

I'm going to search... but could you help by posting links to some of those threads?

I guess not enough memory, the launcher is killed and restarted ...

Stuttery and laggy

Hey I got a nexus s a week ago and noticed it was a little stuttery at times going in and out of apps,so I got an exchange ..new one does same thing, went to 3 different bestbuys all there demo phones did the same...my question? Who else notice this lag or stuttering opening and closing apps, note launcher and home screen is smooth...
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Yeah I notice a stutter on mine especially when loading and closing apps, but compared to my old hero this thing flies.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Mine does all of the above and sometimes freezes in between a home screen, like 5o 5o% and the apps from the app free drawer never come up

Highly recommend if you're rooted to use CM7 nightly very smooth all around over stock and any other custom ROM out now for NS
Yea am thinking about just rooting it,was gonna wait and see what updates Google was going to release, but I'm not very patient

2.4 should be out in couple months but i think next update we are getting just resolves issues when making phone calls. But yea CM7 nightly is very good i dont usually advertise what rom i like best but if you noticed i have it on my SIG...IMO its that good not to mention you get a rom update every night and no need to wipe after every update they just update over each other so very convenient
And you can always unroot and relock your boot loader if you have to return your phone for any reason Ive returned 2 phones with no problems.

Well this thing would eat my old hero for lunch when it comes to speed. So I'm not really complaining.
There is only a little bit of stuttering every now and again.
I've had it for about a week now and it has been flawless on stock. I've had one random restart.
This is seriously the best android phone I have ever owned. Im so ****ing satisfied with my purchase.

Yes, I had it about three days and did not have any random reboot or lags. I'm on stock OS too. I just had one 3G disconnection but that's pretty much about it. I had to reboot and it was back to normal.
It's very smooth and I feel glad that I switched from WM 6.5!
Install the app "OS Monitor" from the Market and check if the "init" process is using a constant 100% cpu.
This is a known bug that affects some Android devices. The fix is to enable the USB Debugging mode in Options -> Application -> Developer.

CM7 Alpha 4 Bug Thread

I know it just came out, but for those who already flashed it can post their bugs here. I will update the OP with a list of the most frequent bugs over time.
The reason or this thread is to help people get a general idea whether or not they want to flash it, and helps the devs know what they have to fix.
Sent from my Samsung Epic
KNOWN BUGS:
Screen turns off while trying to take a call
Speakers when listening to music make a popping noise when you touch the screen.
SD card will not mount
Have to toggle the speaker button on and off to hear the person on the other side
Notification LEDs do not work
Some Third-Party Apps (such as Touchdown) FC
Can't restore data in Titanium Backup. Only fix is to re-flash
Where is alpha 4 posted, I see the thread in development is linked to alpha 1.
Turned screen off then tried to turn it back on but it wouldn't.... had to battery pull

The screen is no longer turning on when a call comes in. The phone rings, but the screen stays black.
The powered off battery charging animation seems to be broken again.
I was able to get the screen to turn on when taking a call by pushing the power button, then sliding the keyboard open and closed again. It brings up the answer screen at that point.

Attempting to connect to wifi causes failures upon obtaining IP address. Repeating the connection attempt sometimes resolves it. Has done this in every alpha though. Or is it just me?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
If there are problems with calls, it is the fault of the person who compiled. All of these things work fine for me on a proper build.
I did not compile alpha 4, because it wasn't ready...

Problems with every rom

I've tried many different roms such as jvo, jvh, jvp and jvq. I've tried darkys, juwes, gingerreal , f1, insanity and miui but they all have these problems after the phone has been 'up' for over a day. When I exit a game using home or back my launcher restarts.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
The same game and the same launcher always : maybe are not compatible.

You are using tw launcher ? If not, you should check your task killer program. Maybe you got the option "stAy in ram". If yes, choose it

I havent tried the stuff in this thread but it is interesting, and on the second page, there is a posted .apk that apparently solves it..
Like saphirrot said, if the launcher has a 'stay in mem' option, check it. I've done that with Launcher Pro and the launcher restart happens far far less.
It's just android freeing up ram for the game. It's a pain in the ass but better than not being able to run a game because of low memory.

I use super manager or astro manager. They have app managers and allow you to install .apk files. Super manager is great if you have root access as you can uninstall bloatware apps like aldiko, layar etc. Make sure to backup app just in case anything goes wrong.

I use AppInstaller. Very simple.
Thanks guys I installed the apk and my launcher no longer restarts but apps still close even when I go off them using the home button so I can return to them in a minute and be where I left it. Is there any apk for this as it is frustrating when you go off an app for a minute only to find it's closed when u go back on it.

Actually the apk hasn't worked. Launcher is still rebooting when I go back to the home screen.

Nothing is wrong. It's running out of memory. Android shall release background tasks if foreground tasks need the memory. Since Gingerbread, you can no longer force most things to stay in memory so those features are mostly useless these days. Should have kept to one ROM and asked your question in its thread. Too many things to suggest to tune it properly really. Uninstalling system apps you don't use and trying different kernels are your last options.

This is completely unacceptable then, you can't even multitask. And after the phone has been 'up' for over 12 hours you can't even keep the dialer in memory! There must be a way around this. A smartphone should not take over 3 seconds to open the dialer.

I have never seen this problem before, and since it so several I have to assume that if other people had it, they would have posted about it.
That means that it is either due to a problem with your hardware, or due to something you are installing/configuring. I would do a full factory default then add apps back very slowly, one by one, doing some basic testing in between. That way you may be able to isolate the problem.
If it still happens right after the factory reset, take the phone to a service center.

I have seen people talk about it but the answers are since gingerbread apps get closed because of memory meaning that the dialer doesn't even stay in memory after the phone has been booted.for a while.

Nexus 7 Stuck scrolling up?

Hi, this has happened twice now.
Once on Facebook, and once on the Browser I think
What happens, is it seems like someone (a robot with really quick fingers) keeps flicking my screen up, so when I try to scroll down the page, it goes down a little bit and then goes straight back up, so it seems to "bounce" off the top of the page.
I have to keep closing things, pressing home button/back button lots, close apps etc and then it will stop.
What could be causing this? I hope I explained it well enough.
Thanks !
Anyone?
Are you rooted? If so, try restoring to stock or re-flashing the stock ROM. I don't really have any idea what could cause that scrolling issue, but if it continues, I would exchange/RMA your N7.

Homescreen icons and widgets dissappear

Just got my second nexus 4. Rooted then installed cm10. I keep having a problem where one of my home screens keeps losing all icons. It happens to different home screens pages. Did I receive a bad phone? This never happened on my old nexus 4. The only solution is to force stop trebuchet, then my icons come back. Really annoying.
Thanks

Lol no. It's something to do with the software. Try another full wipe. Do not restore any apps or anything yet, and see if the problem still persists.

I found the problem. The issue only occurs in nightlies. It happens when you switch from app drawer to home screen really fast. I replicated the bug multiple times by repeatedly switching from drawer to home screen. The problem is gone on rc5.
