[Q] ICS stock apps on HC possible? - Acer Iconia A500

Hi,
Is there a way/possibility to port stock apps from ICS (4.0.x) to HC (3.2.1)? I'm asking because I was just on Thor's ICS dev build and checked out the rom a little bit. E-mail 4.1 app for instance can now sync all mail in stead of only one month (tried it with Hotmail-exchange). Contacts and Calendar app look nicer too. So, I'm curious! Currently back on Thor's rom v14.2. If it's possible then a small how-to would be great.
Sent from my Acer ICONIA TAB A500

Yes and No. It depends on the Android API level the application was compiled for.
So if the application was written only for ICS API the answer is NO. However, if it wasn't then the answer is yes.
TD

I think I have an ICS stock apps dump on my computer somewhere, I can try to install them and see which ones install on my tablet running rooted 3.2 and let yall know.

That would be great, thanks!

If your wife's phone is rooted and you install this, you will lose root. If that's not a big deal, then go for it.
does the update delete everything on your phone?
if so, how do u backup/restore stuff? and how do you get the apps/games u purchased back without rebuying?
any other issues to know about? does the update reinstall att bloatware? do i have to put it back to stock to update?
i rooted to uninstall that stuff and to be able to install 3rd party apps, but never used a custom rom.
i'd really like to be able to use my 8gb sd card for apps since i have no space, so i am thinking of updating now and rooting later once it's available.
Why does everyone pay for apps that's what 4shared is for :-D

If you are already rooted, then you should seriously look at and consider Liberated Aria FR008. This ROM is based off the European Gratia complete with HTC Sense and does not have any AT&T bloatware, has an OC kernel and also used Dark Tremors Apps2SD which is much better than the native Froyo App2SD feature. If you like HTC Sense and want the Froyo 2.2 features, then this is the ROM to use.
If you choose to install the AT&T Froyo 2.2 update, it will wipe your phone clean and you will loose root and you will be stuck with all of the AT&T bloatware with no way to remove it.
For apps that you bought and paid for in the Market, these apps are tied to your gmail account, so if you reset your phone, you can reload the apps from the Market without any additional charges.

where do i get this rom, instructions? what about the cm7 2.3 version?
will using roms delete anything currently on my phone?
also, the wife has an aria. i guess she should just use the regular update, all she probably cares about are her contacts. how would she back these up?

Yes, flashing a new ROM will usually delete anything currently on your phone. If you are rooted, You can use "My Backup Root" to save your apps and settings, text messages and phone log and then restore them after you flash a new ROM.
Here is the official thread about CM 7 RC1:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=956223
Here is where you can download CM 7 RC1 and the nightly updates. Starting with Nightly 11 the code base is now Android 2.3.3.

is that the best one? issues?
i was waiting for this official 2.2 update for some reason, but now i realize i shoulda just used a rom. so i can backup with myroot (which i already have), but i'll have to reinstall the app before i can restore? reinstalling wont overwrite the backup folders on my sd card will it?
whats the best/free way to backup a non-rooted phone apps/contacts? mainly contacts?

Yes, if you backup with myroot, you have to reinstall myroot from the Market and then you can restore the backup. Flashing a new ROM will not wipe anything on your SD card.
For contacts you can export them to your SD card or sync them with your Gmail account. If you export them to your SIM card, the CM 6/7 ROMs cannot read them off the SIM card.
thanks
whats the diff between cm7 2.3 and the 2.2 you mentioned above with htc sense?
cm7 does not have htc sense? what is so special about htc sense anyway? will i miss it?

CM 7 is based on Android Open Source Project code. It is almost as pure Android as you can get UI and interface wise. You can still customize the UI with widgets and such, especially if you buy some from the Market. So bottom line is with CM 7 you can customize the phone however you like.
HTC Sense is the UI that is built into the stock Aria and now the AT&T Froyo update. That UI uses special widgets developed by HTC to enhance the user experience and these widgets only run on an HTC Sense ROM. Will you miss Sense? It's hard to say. It's really a personal preference.

i dont think i'll miss it after reading some more on it.
so do i have to start off with the original update-cm-7.0.0-RC1-Liberty-signed.zip
then update to a nightly, or can i just start off with the most recent nightly? wasn't sure since they are about the same MB size.
also, what about this app2sd dark tremor thing. do i need that? why is it better than the regular app2sd?

You can just flash the latest CM 7 nightly, but you need to follow the installation steps listed in the CM 7 RC1 thread first (i.e. format system, format data, format cache, etc.).
DT Apps2SD isn't as big of deal if you are going to run CM 7 IMO. If you were going to use the Liberated FR008 Sense ROM I would recommend it because it does a better job than the Froyo 2.2 APP2SD.

All custom ROMS here are for the A500 so far, nothing for A501. You DID backup your existing ROM, didn't you? It tells you too in the CWM thread!
If you didn't, you're boned until someone else posts an A501 rom dump.

Too bad, because the devs may have been able to use it to create some custom with more 3G support on A500 with the A501.
Yes i know its my foult I dont know why i didnt backup Rom changing is so automatic for me after a huge collection of android phones ...
try to put the 3.1 update from taiwan... the config does have settings for 3G (normally)
I did a similar thing as ble3e (I'm using Acer Recovery Installer) but when I tried to restore after finding this removed all 3G functions the backup appears to be corrupted (looks like a faulty media card) and fails
I tried the leaked 3.1 update.zip but it is also for the A500 and has no code for the 3G
Desperately looking for an A501 rom image from anyone who has a good backup ... help

You mean this china firmware leaked one ?
yes, or wait seems some people got the "update" notification, so soon will get update.zip official I feel
but I do have the 3G settings on my A500 with the ROM I use, so... I dunno what the tablet A501 got over the A500 (about the settings)
oh the leaked one was an alpha testing btw haha
they probably checked how many left over bugs was there and then fixed them hopefully
no A501 in my country so... can't help more, but I confirm to have the APN and 2G/3G settings on my A500 I just checked it
try virtous galaxy.. it has sms application and has apn in setting,.
Unfortunately none of custom roms have support for mobile . Options in wireless connections are visible but problem is whit network searching ... So I'm still waiting for stock rom for iconia a501
I contacted Acer support about an upgrade fro the A501 to HC3.1 - looks like we will have to wait until Q3 or Q4 for this. Here's theri response:
Unfortunately the 3.1 update will not be available for A501 tablets, instead they will be updated to 3.2 by Q3 or Q4 of this year which will of course include all the changes from 3.1 and much more.
Still looking for a stock rom for the A501.
cant you just ask acer to provide the full original rom so u can just flash it ?
Just backed up my a501 rom yesterday. Will upload it a little later on today.

Thanks for help . My tablet is working again
You mean to tell me that all the a500 roms (even with the a500 battery saving app available from the market which makes a500's stop searching for 3g connection to save battery) have a completely crippled APN configuration area and theres not even an update we can flash over the top to enable it??
Why would they need an app to stop it looking for 3g connection if the 3g connection was compeltely crippled anyway?

Acer Day Planner

Is there a way to get the Acer Day Planner app, which comes in the A100?
My guess download the .apk from system dump and modify .build prop THOUGH I could be completely wrong..
So download system dump, or a100 rom if acceptable then take the desired .apk out if it doesn't work right off the bat which im assuming it won't you will need to edit the .build prop ...
Hope this helps hit the thanks if it does!

After installed, the app loads in portrait mode, because of the A100 specs, I think... no problem about that, but... when I touched on "Start" to configure it, then I got force close everytime I tried it.
It didn't work absolutely.
I don't know what to do with it dry bud..

The app has dependencies. Namley the email and calendar apps. So chances are those and who knows what else needs to go into it. I have to agree its probably the best planner app out there. Would be nice to get an effort to port it. If we find all the parts for it chances are it should be doable. Might explain the force closes. I could be way off as I am in the process of trying. But if it works it should just be as simple as having a set of apps to copy to whatever device (ideally I'd like it to work on my phone too but that might be asking too much lol)

Heh "should" is a word fraught with peril. But, yeah, it doesn't seem compatible at the moment. I don't know if editing the build.prop would be a workaround or not, however. Have you checked their mobile support site?
Anyway, I just downloaded the nightly build and it installs and seems to run fine on my ICS 7.7.
Thanks burhanistan for pointing me to the nightlies. Did know they also exist for Android.
Indeed the Nightly is running smooth
Yes you can use the nightlies, They did put out a stable ver of firefox but its only for phones right now they said they are working on a tablet verison.
Search for Aurora. That's the Firefox nightly. Quick ICS Browser is so much better IMHO.

[Q] Need help getting Google Play Store

I am using a Honeycomb Image from here for my Nook Color and can't find a way to get the Play Store as it didn't come with it and there is no file manager to install from the sdcard. Has anyone else used this or know of a better one for the Nook Color that will allow me access to the Play Store as I am wanting to install Unity Remote so I can use the device with Unity 3D. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
If you email it you should be able to run it from the email attachment / download menu. But I would say try some of the jellybean builds. They're much more complete and they run much smoother, the HC builds were built from the sdk and never got to a point of great stability.

Play Store gets installed as part of a gapps package, not as a stand alone app. Try one of the gapps-hdpi or gb or ics versions at goo.im. Flash that with your CWM.

Thanks for helping. I was trying the Honeycomb build since I was able to run it from the sd card but I also tried the one from CyanogenMod which has 2.3.5 that is listed as the last stable version for Nook Color and that anything later isn't stable from their mods. Is there a jellybean build you recommend that is stable? And how do I install the gapps as I couldn't find any documentation on the goo site. Also I was unable to add my e-mail with CyanogenMod 7.2 as it wasn't able to communicate with the server and I was connected to Wifi.

You really should get rid of that honeycomb. It is way put of date and was never very good. Go to my NC updated SD installation thread linked in my signature. Everything you need is there. I recommend the latest CM10 nightly linked there. It is a nightly, but very stable (certainly more stable than that honeycomb). And the link for the gapps that matches is linked on my thread too.
