When the windows 8 was released and are able to support ARM processors, I was elated.
So I went about looking for ways to install and review the windows 8 for myself on my netbook. And I must say, I am pretty impressed so far.
The foot print of the platform is definitely smaller and the running of apps much more efficient than its predecessor OSs.
Now I am all hyped about wanting to port the windows 8 to my phone.
I was surfing around the web for installation info or guides to port the windows 8 onto my Omnia 8. But I cannot find anything useful.
Any one here knows how to do that?
Please advise.

windows 8 is 14gb. i doubt the nand chip on your omnia is that big eitherway MS are yet to release an ARM version.

Yeah... I know.
But I am sure the ARM version will be scaled down to fit mobile devices.
Take the tablets for example, if the windows 8 is not scaled down specifically for the ARM versions, a 16GB tablet would only have about 2GB of memory left after the windows 8 "Upgrade".
Then those who have 8GB tablets, would not be able to even consider installing windows 8 on them!
hmm... looks like we will have to wait for the mobile versions to be released.
Any news or rumours in the grapevine?
Have you guys learned anything more about the Windows 8 RT/mobile version. It would be really great if someone can port it to the Omnia 2.

Windows 7 doesn't work on the processor inside the tab. Windows 8 will but that version hasn't been released. Only the intel version has.
Would love Windows 8 on my tab.

For starters....it isn't an Intel chip in the 10.1. Its the NVIDIA Tegra 2.

Hmm sorry but i am not sure if its intel! .. but the main thing is will it be possible to install windows 8. it would be fantastic.. i think its a ARM-based chipset but heard that it shuld be similar to the Tegra 2..

I wouldnt want windows 8 on my tablet...but I can see why some people might be interested.
nvidia is not intel though. they may licence some technologies from each other, but they aren't one and the same. If they were. then why would intel be bothering with the medfield chips?

If dual boot was possible why would u not want to put win 8 or any other OS on it? I thought that was the point of being "open" why do so many touchpad users want android???

Actually windows8 might surprise you. it is not bloatware as in previous windows
Nvidia uses arm architecture intel uses x86. Windows 8 is being designed to support lean hardware like ARM based SoC. It will supports 2 modes - traditional windows called desktop mode and touch based called metro. Its tile based metro UI is more elegant than android and shoul work with both x86 and arm devices. X86 will habe an edge as it will work woth traditional windows as well as Metro while arm can only work with metro assuming they fix all the headaches related to arm

Me too! This is a Samsung tab that runs Android. Not an Android tab made by Samsung! If dual boot is possible I want it!

Well sorry to blow out your dreams but Windows 8 ARM wont isnt coming 'til 2013 and it WONT be available as OEM or retail disc in any way.
It will be embedded into the slabs, just like Android.
But since it is NOT open source, you just will NOT be able to add it afterwords.
THERE WILL BE NO WINDOWS ON THE GTAB 10.1. EVER.
Dual-Booting a Windows 8 ARM tablet with Android might be possible, but not the opposite.
That being said; just wait to see the price of the Windows-based slabs; itll be a good 200$ over the comparable Android-based slab.

Unfortunately, I agree with everything here, except the word "ever." I think there will be folks rocking the GT10 when Win8 gets leaked and built, but by then this will be a "legacy device." I'm really looking forward to having a windows 8 tablet, but it won't be the galaxy tab 10.1
yep microsoft UEFI Secure Boot technology might make it near impossible to dual boot win 8 and android ON devices built for windows8 - but i have faith in the dev community to port Win 8 onto android first devices- not that i would use it anyway

I bought it one week ago and upgraded it with 2GB ram + 80GB SSD.
Win8 works quiet well on the pad, and it has the necessarry resulution for the split screen function where a second programm is shown on a third of the screnn size.
thx for the hint. I read very good and very bad ratings for the WeTab. Battery Life has too be very weak and the touchscreen is not very reative i read.

The first post was written with my WeTab under WiFi.

The touch behavior under W8 is excellent in my opinion.
Only the g-sensor isn't working correct at the moment and the light sensor is a bit strange sometimes. Haven't tested Bluetooth & HDMI so far.
I'm using Windows 8, Android 3.2.2, Android 4.0.3 and Ubuntu 12.04 Beta on the tab for testing and application development at the moment.

Have tried it on HP Slate 2 , only not working properly is the N-Trig and it cannot detect your Sim Card for 3G connection.
for now windows 8 is in beta test, i think this problem there are because windows 8 are not final.

Personally I wouldn't buy any tablet hardware currently out, especially for a consumer preview. Wait until fall, when things are finalized and there are some good tablets at reasonable prices, specifically designed for Windows 8. Then you'll be in a far better position to get the best hardware with native support, the features you want, at a price you'll be comfortable paying. Patience is a virtue

Asked the same question myself.
dhgate.com have some great value tabs. ~$300 US (with $30 off at the moment) for a 1.66 atom 2gb ram and 32gb ssd.
In my opinion for the price why not go for it, in fact i'm about to.

you can always run android on it or whatever you want if win8 doesn't work out.
I'm going to have a play with one of these then maybe invest on a WoA version when they come out. The Nokia one sounds pretty cool.

If you are looking for something good, then i suggest you wait until the official windows 8 is released or atleast the RC version comes out so that manufacturers and start building tablets optimized for windows 8 that will be snappy, responsive and have long sustaining battery life. It's too early to suggest one right now. Have some patience

Its not a rom its a theme, it just changes the look of android to look like Windows 8.The notification bar is a dead giveaway.

Google choose to make Android free open source and thus custom ROMs abound.
Windows 8 is not at all open source and the RT version will be provided to OEMs only, not end user upgrades. PC upgrades will be the only end user upgrade option.
Technically the Nexus 7 16GB would be a decent performer with little end user space. 8GB would be insufficient space. The RT version doesn't need the RAM like the PC version, but the emmc storage space is still steep compared to Android.
You want Windows 8 tab? Just buy one.
I predict that Windows 8 tablets will sweep the market just like touch screen laptops with Windows XP handwriting edition.
Well...im not gonna go buy a whole new tablet when i just got the nexus 7 about a month ago. lol is there any lauchers yet that support stuff like this? like a metro ui? Launcher 7 doesnt support it last i checked.

Windows 8 CAN run on arm, we know that. Or at least, a modified version can anyway. What do you reckon our chances of getting a Windows 8 port to our devices? Maybe a port from Microsoft's Slate Tablet? Maybe the only thing preventing this would be legal issues?
I realise some XDA members may find this proposal ridiculous, but I thought I'd just put it out there anyway .

Wouldn't happen for a couple reasons. First and foremost is that the Nexus 7 does not meet the minimum hardware requirements set forth by Microsoft for Windows RT tablets. Secondly, it would further undercut their OEM contracts since RT is currently only licensed to them. Thirdly, there's a lack of drivers for our hardware. Fourthly, the bootloader would need to be locked down tightly with no way to unlock.
Finally, I highly doubt you'd ever see it ported, as any dev who did try would find themselves on the losing end of a rather substantial lawsuit coming out of Redmond.

While I don't technically disagree with what you're saying (Port is unlikely), I do disagree with some of your reasoning. The requirements of Windows 8 compared to the Nexus 7 are irrelevant, XDA is all about getting devices to do things they were never designed to do in the first place. The HD2 is a great example of this, as it runs ports of every major mobile OS out there (as well as a few not-so-major ones). This kind of shows that how it affects OEMs is somewhat irrelevant as the same thing can be said about most devices from the Windows Phone/CE days. Even if that were true, the numbers of people who would actually buy a Nexus 7 just to install Windows 8 on it (or who WOULDN'T buy a Windows 8 tablet because they can use their N7) are probably very small.
Similarly, I don't think Microsoft has ever taken any of our developers to court. A C&D might get sent out, but that's probably the height of it. It certainly hasn't prevented developers from trying before.
I think the bootloader is completely irrelevant as well, why does the bootloader have to be locked down? To meet Microsoft's licensing requirements? That doesn't make any sense, nothing would be licensed (Which is what makes the whole thing a grey area for sure) so licensing requirements don't matter. The fact that we have reasonable control over the bootloader is actually a massive advantage.
The real issue that you've mentioned is regarding drivers. There's very few RT tablets out there right now so there isn't a lot of drivers we can pilfer (Although it probably will help that Surface is based off of Tegra 3 - which is what the N7 uses, albeit not the same type). Never mind that, not a lot of research into RT has happened just yet so the ability to pilfer ANYTHING is up for debate right now - surface is certainly going to be locked down to a large extent and as far as I'm aware there aren't going to be any System Dumps lying around that we can use either so there's a lot to do before even considering porting to something like the N7. I doubt anything like that would happen any time soon and by the time it does (assuming it ever does), the N7 might be old hat. None the less, I wouldn't rule it out as a definite no, just more of an extremely long shot for now.

Then again since when have we ever seen windows mobile os's ported over to android devices on this site, I've seen an ipod touch run android in my lifetime, but never any ports of Windows mobile 5, 6, 7 to any devices, but we ran android on windows mobile devices using haret.
I've toyed around with Windows Mobile 8 and Windows 8, it kinda reminds me of what windows ME was supposed to be ( being sarcastic) , it's a good OS but nothing to loose sleep over. By next year we will be asking for a Windows Mobile 9 port that will also never come to light.
At least we have Ubuntu running unoptimized on our N7............

So I can remote into a Mac, does that mean it can run Mac OS as well. This is useless.
wondows architecture is x86 based. windows rt is arm based. on nexus7 impossible to running windows desktop os. however, its possible to running windows rt on nexus7 if it's bootloader unlocked and customized for booting win rt.
