XDA to go offline officially on JAN. 18th 2012 - EVO Shift 4G General

I guess xda is planning to officially go offline on purpose on JAN 18th to help petition against SOPA. The only way we can help get xda back online is by getting involved in the fight against SOPA by joining the petition process.
As far as I know this only applies to the U.S., so if you don't live in the U.S. you should have nothing to worry about.
More information about xda's goal here:
http://www.xda-developers.com/annou...8th-at-8am-you-can-help-bring-us-back-online/
More information about SOPA here:
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stop_Online_Piracy_Act
Just thought I would point this out to raise awareness of the situation.

Good deal man. Should be paying attention to this, and doing there part.

Glad they are joining Reddit on this. Hopefully google, yahoo, and facebook follow

I'm glad to see xda doing this, I already been signed a petition but way to go xda.

Well if I don't see you guys on here again it's been a pleasure j/k I have faith that this petition will get through and am also glad xda is doing this. SOPA is way out of controll and could probably threaten to shut down xda for silly reasons if it gets passed. I will definately help to fight this.

Great. Shutdown the site as a protest for your own political beliefs. Great way to get everyone to go to other sites (if it were shutdown for more than a few days).

Again, my original point is this:
I came here to talk about my phone not to hear about the management's political views.
Is there a current DMCA cease & desist order for XDA? No? Then why do I care?

The internet has been around for 20+ years. **** like this comes up every 2 years.

We'll see what happens. Sopa is a pretty deal nothing like ever before that gives the gov the right to shut down basicly any website they want for suspected copywrite. I don't think xda or other websites would fight against it unless they felt threatened by it but who knows.

Lol, let me know if you need testers for anything but it's kinda hard to test patches on a broken repo source. Message me on git sometime and we'll have some convos on there.

Lol, yeah I haven't been on talk anymore much just was busy with life stuff for a long time. Still kinda am which is why I don't have much time usally to do much for development purposes. You know "****" is always interesting on xda (never a dull moment). I think it is about to get more interesting with SOPA. I just tweeted @htc and @htcdev about where they stand with devs distributing their "non" open source software (exluding the kernel). I want to know if they plan on attacking sense rom devs or not for distributing their software. AOSP roms may be the only future for android devs. Anyways sent you a request on talk.

Hit the damn thanks button...

Seriously....its not hard. And no, trolls, I'm not whining because no one thanks my posts. Just look around at the ratio of downloads : thanks. You'll find simple .apk posts that have 110 views, but the post was only thanked 4 times. Please don't try to tell me that all 106 other people used the XDA app to download. I realize that you can only give 5 thanks a day, and the app has no button, but everyone here knows theres always been a serious lack of appreciation here in the Vibrant forum.
It's the easiest, most effortless way to show appreciation to someone, yet it seems at least half the forum can't take .28 seconds to hit the thanks button. Don't just download and run guys. Slam that button, and do it with a smile...cause you would expect the same.
Any time you download posted content, either via link, or via attachment...it is out of courtesy that you hit it every time....regardless of whether or not you liked the content. Also...dont just thank popular devs. Even if its someones first post, they still deserve recognition.

BOOM! Hit the thanks button, with some cheese on it.
Nobody cared about getting thanks until the thanks button showed up. I don't care if someone wants to feel special because some stranger on the internet clicked a button. Now all anyone does is solicit thanks from some nerds they don't even know. Who gives a damn.

youre such a rebel badass....classic vibrant user
yah we wouldnt want you to strain your finger muscles or anything. And the reason the "Thanks" button showed up was because of popular demand. It is a widespread feature across internet forums. Some people actually enjoy giving thanks....even if it is through a virtual, meaningless button......its certainly better than your deplorable attitude.
"hey, we'll take all the free roms, kernels, themes, apps, mods, etc. that we can get!! just dont expect us to press a 'Thanks' button, because WE think its a cheesey concept."
you dont care if someone wants to feel special?? interesting, well id bet youd want that person to care if you downloaded something of theirs and there turned out to be something wrong with it, right? Youre the type of person that downloads something....doesnt say thanks or leave any positive feedback....but then once you find something wrong, something you dont like, or something you WANT, THEN you will make the effort to jump on the forum and say a thing or two.
The bottom line is it doesnt matter what the hell you think about the Thanks button. If someone is kind enough to provide you with something that improves your phone experience, and all they ask from you to do in return is to move your mouse a couple inches to click the Thanks button?????....then you hit the friggen Thanks button!...quid pro quo, clarice.....

No I don't contribute much, but I try to help when I can. What I don't do is start threads whining about people not using the thanks button. Maybe I just don't get what the obsession is about the thanks button. Is it a popularity contest, or is their an achievement that we can unlock like in XBL or PSN?

The reason they leave, mainly, is for site hits. But I also think it's because the moderating on xda is so inconsistent, and sometimes hypocritical.
By keeping their content in a forum that they control, they are likely to have cleaner, productive threads...because anyone that flames/hinders production will ACTUALLY get disciplined.
But yes, I do agree that blasting the forum on the way out is cowardly....but I'm not going to point fingers. Just keep in mind that I kind of see where they are coming from.....people can be very unappreciative, and will jump at any chance to get on each other's case (see members above)....it gets annoying after a while, and starting a controlled environment can really cut that type of **** down...as opposed to letting the critters roam free

I only press thanks when people either
make me laugh
When i agree with them
I use their... download/link etc.
p.s. topshelf, we have both 221 thanks
I find this thread hysterical. My thoughts...
I LOVE when someone hits "thanks" - it is natural to feel good when someone appreciates you/your efforts.
I HATE when...
people whine about not getting thanks
or make posts about "click thanks" (defeats the f'ing point of the button / clutter)
and I hate when people make their signatures all about hitting their thanks button.
Both sides of the "argument" are right in this thread.
Put on your big boy britches and realize this is the Internet.

Kifno's last message

OK people, as you all can see kifno is gone. We spoke at length by PM in the last few days, and the result was decent. He asked me post this for him after he left, so here it is:
kifno said:
You may all know me as, kifno. I'd like to let everyone know that yes, in the past I have kanged/stolen/un-credited others for their work. Why? I was a fool who didn't understand what XDA was all about, and didn't even take the time to read the rules. And what have I done to myself? I've dug myself in a hole so deep below the earth's surface, that I'm sweating bullets its so hot down here by the earth's core. But in all serious-ness, I realize that kifno could never EVER undo what he has done in his past to make it up to you all. Even though I have posted some work of my own along with others. The coding and themes that I have truly took the time to do myself. But even using the work of others and reporting it works on the heroc isn't the problem. The problem is the way I went about doing it. And even now that I tried to stop doing so and be an help to the community, that will never undo that. And for that I realize that this account and all its threads and post are a symbol of disgrace to XDA. I am having il Duce let you all know this because I have asked the mods to delete everything that my account has ever done. I've decided to get a fresh start on things and be the person I truly am on XDA and NOT be the person I tried to be, some awesome "dev" because I am not. A few scripts and themes don't make you awesome, being a living symbol of what XDA is about like other developers and themers and scripters and others are what make you "awesome". And that I could never be because of my past. Some of you may find joy in my last words because you kifno gone, others may find joy that I have realized what I have done and what I need to do. Others may find sadness while reading this because of the help I've given them in the past. In no way, shape, or form and I trying to offend anyone but it won't effect my decision on what "kifno" has decided to do, leave. I hope you understand where I am coming from with things and again major thanks to il Duce for posting this for me now that I am gone.
Best Regards XDA,
- Kifno

I go away for a few days and this happens??
For those old timers around here... I expect another Fixxxer / smoother / markus_del, etc., etc. situation - you know, making multiple accounts and all that.
Personally, if I am right about that, I can't wait for that to happen again. He'll get called out on it, as I think he should be.
If you F*** up, take responsibility and deal with the consequences; there's no need to try and hide by changing your name/identity. "Fresh" start or not, I think creating a new account will only come around to bite him in the ass just as hard as when he was kanging once people find out what his new alter-ego is.

It got annoying to see his name on everything new out there. The tweak turned out to be sh!t. Some people are saying he already came back with a new name.

Yeah, I didn't really have a problem with him because he meant well for heroc nor did I want him to "leave". I just think the way he's handling all this by deleting his Kifno account to take the easy way out is callow.
If he posted that PM instead of having il Duce post it, I for one would have more respect towards him. We all Most of us (not including me ) make mistakes; learn from them and move on.

whats the point of just making a new account if your gonna leave then leave.
I can see the reasons for leaving it and creating a new name.. even on owning up to one's mistakes on here there are some of us that don't let things go.. and would have harassed him any way.. i wasn't a kifno fan by any means so not sticking up for him.. and making a new account to not be like the other one would take more discipline than I think he has any way.. its hard to change who you are, or at least convince people you are different..

I think you win the award for funniest lmao.

Thank you for everything.

I want to just take a second and say thanks for ALL the support I have received from most of you since I started out here. I realize that Autism and Android were an unlikely pair but I thought it worked well.
Lately there has been an increasing level intolerance for what I was trying to do here. I know it's a vocal minority but they have become louder and louder. I have become quite disheartened as of late with the direction this forum has taken and I'm going to step back for a while. My ultimate goal is to further the spread of Autism Awareness and hopefully get Android4Autism launched by the end of the summer or early fall and so I'm going to redirect my efforts there.
I honestly had the best of intentions with everything I was doing here but it has apparently run it's course. Aside from asking you to "think about donating your old devices for the Android4Autism project (and I specifically said not until after everything was set up and legit so that everyone was protected) and votes, I never asked for anything. Despite the claims that have been made to the contrary about my intentions.
I want to thank everyone for voting for my blog but as you may notice the thread has been moved after being here for over 2 1/2 months. I realize that it was not "on topic" but it was a positive thread. I thought it was amazing how everyone unified and worked together for a common goal. I suspect that the vocal minority contributed to this and that saddens me. I'm not angry this happened, it's just that fact that some people would take it upon themselves to get this removed from our forums after all this time, instead of just not reading it.
I'm not looking for anything out of this. After all you have given to me, I felt I owed you an explanation for my decision. That's the very least I can do. I'll never be able to repay all the kindness and support you have shone to both me and my family. You have all made a difference in our lives. You have helped to spread awareness and for that I will forever be grateful.
Please don't turn this into a flame war either. I'll close the thread myself. I just want everyone to understand how grateful I am for everything and that my stepping back is my choice. My methods are becoming the target for some people and I won't change the way I'm doing things because I believe in what I'm doing. So the best thing is to just walk away. At least for now.
You all know where to find me and I'm happy to help. Please feel free to contact me through my blog or Google+ if you need anything and I will do whatever I can to help you.
Thanks again for everything. I'm very proud of what we were able to accomplish. Please help to keep this community moving forward.
Rob

im not a homer by any means but when my Epic took a swim i was forced to boot my moment up and went back to SDX developers for roms..i REALLY wished the Epic would have caught on over there..just seems like a much better environment....this site has driven away quite a few developers..its a shame..thanks for everything you do rob.not just over here but with your Windows Mobile stuff over at PPCGeeks.if people cant tolerate your Autism Awareness, with all the good stuff you put out for the Epic, then this isnt the place for them..it shouldnt be the other way around...

Yes, yes you are.
How hard is it to not click on threads about things you're not interested in?

Just as hard as it is to follow the forum rules. Say for instance that I considered the elimination of homosexualaity a "positive cause". Should I be allowed to push that agenda here at the cost of the owners of the site simply because I think this is a positive agenda? (According to some users, yes...)

Rob asked us to not turn it into a flaming thread, but you sure don't make it easy. Funny how you have been on xda 2 months, but have only posted 21 times and you choose to post on this... why are you trying to start something?

Regardless of what Rob has given to us (the community) why does he not have to follow the rules of the forum? Why is it appropriate for him to come and complain that his thread was moved to the correct forum and he is quitting because he disagrees with the opinion of those that pay for and/or manager this resource to be available to us?
@dnathan13: Regarding your comment on my membership length here... What Android software have you developed in your lengthy membership in these forums?
Medic,
I got another one for you, like old times: "The best way to fight negative acts is with perseverance, love and the truth"
Stay the course my friend and don't let nobody tell you lies about the truth you cary...

Fail to see how pointing out that we must play by the rules the owners of this site set is "dumping on someone". It's reality, if you don't like it create your own forum and set the rules...
EDIT: I have nothing against Rob's cause and believe the thread is in the correct forum now...
Rob, I've supported you ever since I heard about you and your cause. You are one of the few members here that has gained my respect. I thank you for *Everything* you've done here.

Really?
I don't believe any HUMAN being would have a problem with autism awareness.
Like comparing apples and oranges.
Smh
Thanks Rob. I've enjoyed reading and learning from you. I've been a member pretty much since the epic launched, lurked and just read alot; lately its hard not to respond to some of this.

Keep that head up Rob we are all still behind you. You showed us a piece of yourself and your family here and became a friend to most of us. Keep in mind one thing, you are dealing with a lot of minors on heee and they cant grasp the idea they are ****ting on you with some of the comments about your intentions. They arent mature enough to see how it comes out. The mature adults will remain on your side.
Never feel you asked for anything or too much. Your community came together to give you what you deserved without you asking for it.
Take a rest man play with those kids, your headed in the right direction with the autism awareness, families will benefit from your sweat!

FFS Quit whining

Developers owe you NOTHING.
They will release what they've done when they feel what they've built from the open source code is ready; this is NOT contradictory in any way, shape, form, or fashion.
This method prevents the people whom are whining from bricking their phones.
If you feel that you are owed an Alpha or a Beta, build your own.
LOL why u mad tho?
I want nao!! Give item nao!

Didn't they recently do some analysis with a gas spectrograph or some such device and discover it was only salt and pepper cooked at really high temp?
Shameless bump to keep this up top.
Thankyou sir, its good to know there are still some people who understand this.

So what is the ETA?
Seriously though, i couldn't agree more. If it carries on, Xda is going to become very different with Devs leaving left, right and centre. It's already started.
I have always believed that development threads should be locked down for viewing only, with a more structured Q&A companion thread, but understand in practice, its easier said than done.
The Devs have my full support.
Regards

Anyway enjoy your weekend everyone..Hopefully new week this will all be forgotten

[Info]Can't use Megaupload anymore, shut down by feds

I'm pretty upset that megaupload was shut down by the feds. I had a very important rom uploaded on there and now I can not access it. Rom devs if you have used this site to upload your rom(s) to, your pretty much screwed:

yeah i had some stuff stored on there but luckily nothing linked to it on any sites so atleast i dont have to hunt down and fix any links
Yes this is total BS. It just proves that the powes that be aren't interested in following the same guidelines they set forth for others. This particular action isn't just an infringement of rights, it's a clear abuse of power. They have no interest in fair and just. This is a clear indicator that if we let them continue down this path, one day we shall all be asking for permission to use our once freedom of speech. They hide their attack of our rights by saying that certain individuals were pirating. But in reality it's the same as confiscating your home, and every house in your neighborhood. Because a person three blocks over might be stealing cable. In essence it is downright ludacris.

The FBI site didn't even go down, basically, they're not as amazing as they thought. In a way I want to see them prevail but it's inhumanly possible, I can only imagine that they'll eventually be found and arrested, sparking conversy and if anything that'll light the fire for the fight against these bills, and overall a new outlook on human rights.
Might prove me wrong though

Yea FBI.gov I saw still works, but come on now they got the others down and that's hell of a lot better than what anyone else would've done...everyone makes mistakes xD
And others have seen it down according to other articles

They were shut down but they(the gov) got it up and running shortly after
Yup, the whole reason they attacked megaupload was because of all the sites like this one protesting against SOPA. Hello even google protested against it. It just goes to show how much of a bully our government can be when people speak their minds. It's like them saying "you don't have rights to free speech or to decide what we the fed government do" or "we make the laws not you the people".

Yup looks like even sites that are US based can/will get shut down by the US. Over the years i've come to hate us(america) and all the bull**** we "stand for" I see why everyone hates us and i'm really thinking about moving to Canada or some place else in the upcoming years
Sending an attack directly to fbi.gov is really dumb and childish. It's also a great way to get caught. I'm pretty sure they'll get traced back pretty quickly.

Yeah but the problem is most of them are located in other countries hiding behind proxies. And a lot of isp's don't want to co-operate, and tech they don't have to if they are in certain countries. That's why they call themselves anonymous because it's really hard to find them. Trust me they've gotten smarter since the last time people got arrested. I've done my research on it.

It only takes 1 bot on a US or UK address and they're done.
That's why I use multiupload, hopefully they don't shut down it or all the sites it uploads to.
