so several seaches later and I am in a deeper hole than when I began. I've had the Mogul for a couple years now and it's time to upgrade, but I haven't really kept up on my mobile game and now am considering the Hero, but I can't get a definitive answer to whether tethering is available.
Sprint's sales dept. told me 1. I can't tether with my current plan. 2. no Sprint phone can tether...."can I be transferred to technical dept. please." So his response was YES, the HTC Hero might be able to tether, but NO, no Sprint plan covers tethering.
wow.
so here I am, asking you guys, can I:
1. tether with a Hero?
2. is it covered by an unlimited data plan?
In a nut shell, if you want to tether, you'll have to do some modifications to the hero to get it done, or pay for the app that gets the job done.
As far as tethering plans, yeah we're phasing out the tethering plans. The idea behind that is to move people into buying aircards and what not.
So lets recap; technically yes it can tether, but sprint is phasing out phone as modem.
Does that help?
Yes you can tether. You just need to root your hero which you can do easily using the fresh ore kitchen look in the stickys posted for roms. Also the fresh modaco ttg or gbhil rim they all have wireless tether built in
Seriously, yes, seriously.
Well of course Sprint will tell you you can't. But you can... either wirelessly or wired
Several searches later?
Hell, like 6 threads below this is a 3 page long thread full of ppeople saying ways you can tether.
The Hero for Sprint supports tethering out of the box, kinda. Install HTC Sync from the memory card, this comes with the tether drivers you need. If you go to sprint.com/download you will see that, "HTC Sync™ lets you synchronize Outlook and Windows Address Book (Outlook Express), contacts and calendar events on your PC with your phone. It also lets you install third-party Android applications on the phone, and the Mobile Network sharing function as well." Install HTC Sync, after install with phone plugged into USB via computer, go to Menu>Settings>Wireless Controls, all the way down to the bottom is a new box to check, Mobile network sharing. Check it. This will create a new device on your computer, which you probably will get an error with install due to lack of drivers. Go to Device Manager, it's something called Android Phone I believe, install new drivers, pick location for drivers, in the folder HTC Sync there is another folder called HTC Drivers. Guess what's there? You got it. From then on, all you have to do is plug in your phone via USB and check mobile network sharing.

Just for ****s and giggles I put tether in the search box for this forum. It spit back 82 different threads. And that was only one search, not several...maybe I'm just special.
SERIOUSLY ppl should hit the search and stop wasting ppls time
Wait. Wait. Wait. Isn't tethering a game you play with a ball?

If this works for you, I'm pretty sure you're the only one (with the exception of those using the "Race" condition to enable it)
Sprint disabled tethering this way.
There are three ways in which a user can accomplish tethering, none of which are officially supported by sprint.
1. Wired - Do as you described and use the "race" workaround. This requires you to disable the mobile network, then reenable both mobile network and mobile network sharing fast enough to trick the system... Requires absolutely no modification from the stock form, just patience because it often/usually requires multiple tries to get it to work.
2. PDANet - Download the App and go for it. A good wired solution, but comes with a 1 time cost of $30 to buy the App.
3. Wireless tether for Root Users - requires rooting and only works via wifi, turning your phone into an ad-hoc wireless connection. This is the most common solution, but some people have issues due to it being an ad-hoc connection, and many companies block connections to ad-hoc networks.. So if you have a company issued laptop, it might not work for you.. Also not recommended if you don't have a way to plug your phone into an AC outlet, as it absolutely destroys your battery life.
Anyone disagree with this rundown? I think I covered the bases.

You have just picked my new Daily Rom.
So I have searched high and low and haven't had any luck finding any information about tethering the TF to a WM6.5 device. I am currently using a stock Touch Pro 2. When I pair the two devices together, under the BT settings on the TF there are no profiles listed. When I try to set up a network with the phone using "Share Internet Connection," I get the error message saying "Failed to establish internet sharing connection to remote device as it supports only Network Access Point (NAP) mode."
If anybody could shed some light on how I could actually get the the TF to tether with my phone, that would be greatly appreciated!
I have a Tilt2 running energy rom, normally i'd run wifi-router then all is well.
Apparently the Transformer doesn't accept AD-HOC and idk when it will be supported. The only way i can tether through wifi was to install FRX06 android.
Here's a link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=951962
Once you get to run android on your TP2 go to Settings -> Wireless and Networks -> Tethering & portable hotspot -> check the portable wi-fi hotspot box. You may add a passcode if you want but it will be defaulted to Open.
I've tried it and it works! Good luck!

+1 This is the only way you can get it to work on the phone side that I can find. Works flawlessly.
Transformer wont see 6.5 tether unless you root it.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using XDA Premium App
Works fine for me, but slightly counter-intuitive. Firstly I paired the Phone and Transformer:
1. Set Phone to discoverable
2. Scan for devices on TF
Secondly, run Internet Sharing App (its in the tools folder on my WM6.5)
Select Bluetooth PAN instead of USB from the top dropdown and hit Connect
Now on the TF, selecting the Phone from the bluetooth settings should tether you
No rooting or modding of the TF required. Note this is Bluetooth tethering, not WiFi which doesn't work as WM6.5 WiFi tethering is Ad-Hoc, whci TF does not support without root and mod

I tried this method, but for some reason it still doesn't work. On the phone it says the following.
"Failed to establish Internet Sharing connection to remote device as it supports only Network Access Point (NAP) mode"
Also on the TF it still shows no profiles available with the phone. From what I have read in the forum is that the Touch Pro 2 is using the Broadcom Bluetooth stack and it doesn't' play very nice with other devices.

Which phone do you have? I have the same exact problem asthe OP using my Sprint TP2. I dont see Bluetooth PAN option in my TP2.
I was informed that if even our 6.5 devices would have that option to have bluetooth PAN active, our Transformers doesn't support DUN. Basically, it would be pointless to get internet through this bluetooth method Only thing that will happen is that we can share files with our WM 6.5 devices with our Transformer.
I have Omnia 2 running WM 6.5 using wmwifirouter (use trial version first). Launch using 3G BT, then under options - tools - Bluetooth - Swithch mode to PAN, then switch to discoverable.
Connects great - not the fastest, but I'll wait until we can have ad-hoc work or until I learn more about rooting.
i was able to to do blue tooth tether of Treo Pro 6.5 (raiderfan rom) Ill try it again once i get home and post details (in case it helps anyone)
mt TP2 screen broke and currently on my palm centro...(yes,,go ahead and laugh..haha)
might connect my tp2 just to try the tether. that phone is on a ENergy ROm

Not using Energy ROM, running stock HTC WM6.5 on a Touch Diamond 2. If you don't get Bluetooth PAN in your drop-down I guess your ROM does not support it
Aye, Not only the Rom, but the device itself on wmwifirouter
http://support.wmwifirouter.com/devices/
HTC Touch Pro 2
AT&T Tilt 2
HTC Rhodium
Sprint Touch Pro 2
Support from version 1.50. Sharing using Bluetooth not currently supported.
Guess i have to research more for alternatives.
Fellow TP2 owner here, I just pushed the modded file over to the TF (need root of course) and WIFI tethering works like a champ for me. Need to keep the phone screen active from what I can tell but I'm just using the built in HTC WIFI Router, 3rd party apps might have other options.
So while Bluetooth might be nice it seems like a no go for us old school TP2 owners...

I guess it all depends on what rom you use.
I'm using the 1st generation touch pro with NFSFAN's rom. Bluetooth is right there under the internet sharing application and works flawlessly with my TF.

I don't think it's so much ROM specific as it is PHONE specific. Haven't heard of any TP2's that work with bluetooth tethering looking across multiple forums on the subject.
Sooo, Mango's here and Im creaming my pants over it.. Brilliant.. But, my Orange provider didnt want to include tethering as it was optional.. Anybody knows a way to enable it? Is a new ROM a must and is there one available yet?

, some regular dont't support it .
Even if they would want you to have it enabled, there are two factors:
1. The hardware supporting WiFi AP mode - as MS uses AP mode (to have more clients) rather AdHoc (that supports every chipset) - AP mode ISN'T supported by all WP7 phones! I will check drivers to see what chipset does O7 use.
2. DRIVERS! If the hardware supports it, Sammy will deliver drivers hopefuly.
Yeah, just read some news its up to the chipset and drivers. Will be there in the next updare.. But, older phones might not be getting tethering at all! Lame.. oh well, its time to get a dongle and mend it into my asus tranzformer lol
but at least the USB tethering is working

I'd like that too
does the optimus 7 support AP mode? (infrastructure! NOT ad-hoc!)
USB tethering is done via Diagnostic tool, where you switch from Zune Sync mode to USB Tethering mode and do some playing on PC with it.
And WiFi hotspot is done via few registry edits, check out WP7 dev forums . Omnia7 and Focus have got it working!

Try this click on the keypad and dial ##634# , then dial *#7284#, select Modem, Tethered Call, click Ok your phone should restart, plug the phone into PC, go to control panel -> system -> hardware -> device manager, click on modems, you should see (samsung mobile modem) or something of the same, right click it and click properties, click advanced, add this code (+cgdcont=1,"ip","internet") as is, click ok, now set up a new connection,Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center (or Network Connection) -> Change your network settings -> Set up a new connection or network,Set up a dail-up connection -> next, select SAMSUNG Mobile Modem (this modem could be name difference),enter *99# as Dail-up phone number, and leave username and password blank and click connect, good luck
I don't get this? You want WIFI Tether???
It has already been done and confirmed on Omnia 7 and HD7 as far as I know... works just great on my Omnia 7.
Thanks to these guys.

I can create a wifi hotspot on the 9900 though. You need to upgrade to a newer 7.1 OS version.

try this:
1.unpair your device first
2.install bluetooth ftp(medeivel) on your bb phone
3.then follow above process...
Install bt ftp (medeivel) on bb phone. Not sure what you mean.
Im still stuck with being able to pair. But when i click on the settings box on the device (bb 9900) only option is unpair and rename device.
I would really like to get this working...thanks!
Can you not make the BB a wifi hotspot? I do the tether a lot but not with a blackberry and not with bt.
Nope...seems as if my enterprise BB has been dummy downed. Will not allow me to update os to latest 7.1, which has Wifi Hotspot option. I had been able to bt tether all my other "toys" but for some reason trying to get it to work with my tab 2 has been difficult

Well I'm sorry to say, if tethering was very important to you, you probably should have gotten a different phone. There is no way to do wifi "internet sharing." There is a way to do wired tethering, but it involves installing a special modded HTC driver for USB connection and setting up a dialer connection on each machine you use it on.
I have the 64bit driver and a few instructional notes in a zip file on my skydrive:
http://sdrv.ms/OYxLMP
This was my source for most of the info:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=929468
You may be able to get the 32bit driver there if you need it.
I believe all HTC & Samsung WP7.5+ handsets have wifi internet sharing. Most Nokia handsets have it too, if they've received all their updates.
DVP has no hardware support for wireless hotspot, sorry
Now that I test it, I don't think the wired tethering hack works after the Tango update. I always needed to turn off "data connection" but leave "3g data" active in order to get it to work, but after the tango update, those two settings are no longer separate. Maybe I'm mistaken, but I couldn't get it to work.
