I've long since did so, but still a low signal quality and signal walks. Can write to Motorola for more than a quick solution to this problem?

1. Power-cycle the phone.
Phones problems, like PC's, can be corrected with re-boot! Reboot your phone daily for best performance.
2. Does the issue only occur when using certain applications or functions?
If you are only experiencing the issue while using certain functions or applications it could be a sign of a problem with that app. If this was a downloaded app, try to uninstall the application and see if the issue continues. You can always reinstall the application if it was downloaded from the Market by going into the my downloads menu in the Android Market.
3. Check for Software Updates.
From the home screen touch the home key.
Touch Settings.
Touch About Phone.
Touch System Updates.
If there is a software update available, select update.
4. Perform a Factory Data Reset.
Factory Data Reset is a tool used to remove everything that was imported, added or installed on the device. Keep in mind, when using this feature; everything is deleted. Nothing stored on the MicroSD or the internal phone storage will be affected unless you choose to erase it as well.
Factory Data Reset
From the screen of your phone, press the Menu button
Tap Settings.
Scroll down and tap Privacy
Tap Factory Data Reset

Problem with Wizard -> GPRS and receiving calls

Dear technically gifted people,
I have recently purchased the Wizard (i-mate k-jam) and have the following three problems:
1. Sometimes the phone does not receive calls and they go directly to voicemail, even though I am in an area where all mobiles work and the phone shows full reception.
2. If reset the device or turn on/off flight mode, the device has no problem connecting to GPRS/EDGE (provider MTS/Russia), but after some time it drops the connection and cannot reconnect until next reset.
3. Flight mode switch does not always work. Have to turn it on 2-3 times before phone responds and turns the phone back on.
If someone would be kind enough to help me resolve them I would greatly appreciate it. I recently upgraded to the new ROM (the one posted on the clubimate site in March) but it did not seem to help the issue.
Regards,
egrib
i have the same problem! Have to turn it off and then back on again, very annoying!
Do you think turning the voicemail off will sort it out? I dont really have any need for it anyway
could be SIM related.
My wizard showed the same instability. I needed to reboot every night otherwise i would get dropped calls (straight to voice mail) no GRPS access, and the charging wouldn't work. I changed roms etc. What finally did the trick for me is I got my service provider (FIDO in canada) to change my SIM from the 2001 card i had to a current one.
It seems to have done the trick.
From my own experience and from seeing all the posts on this forum it seems like this device is full of bugs and is just not worth the time and money.
As there a similar device out there that actually works and people have no problem using?
Thanks.

did you have the same problem with previous handsets in the same area? such problem are quite often caused by network issues not mobile and you should try reporting it to your operator's customer care. however, if such problem persist only on wizard and in various areas, then it's probably problem with mobile...

you mean [G] icon on top of screen? well, this is a feature of this model, that after some time it detaches from GPRS, so [G] icon disappears. however if you'll try to connect to internet through GPRS, it will attach again and connect, so i wouldn't be so much concerned about it.

i've had the same problem, but i noticed that it just needs a bit of time for phone to switch on again. so when you're trying to switch off flight mode, tap it once and wait a bit. it should turn on after a while. at least it works this way with me..
eva_d,
I think you are entirely correct on point 3 - flight mode switch takes some time.
As for the other points, I don't think they are as easily resolved. When the phone does not receive phone calls (and calls go straight to voicemail) it does not seem to be a carrier problem since 1. i never had this problem with the same card in a different mobile and 2. once it stops receiving calls it continues to do so until a reset, regardless of where I am located.
The GPRS issue - i know what you are referring to with regards to the [G] icon (I have it all the time) but once i receive or make a phone call, I cannot reconnect to the internet until i reset the device. Also not a carrier problem. This seems to be an issue with all MTS users in Russia. So far unresolved.
Anyone other ideas anyone? Thanks
It's well known issue (GPRS on MTS Moscow; is your mts is in Moscow?). It was fixed in new ROM, that just was released week ago. Russian version is available.

I have a kindoff similar problem. Just got my Qtek yesterday and I tried latching to cingular. What happens is when I switch on the phone, it takes forever to latch to the network. I see the
Y.
Y..
Y... going on for ever. In my old phone, just switch it on and there it connects to cingular. I tried doing the manual/automatic network selection and everything but it just takes too much of time to latch on. It finally latches (thank god !) but still its annoying. But once connected, itnever drops off or goes to voice mail. Looks like it has a starting problem
Also, reception wise, it shows less bars then my old phone when I am sitting on the same chair :?
Did anybody face the same problem, or am I the blessed one. Any tweaks or something that can be done ?
I also have problems sometimes connecting to edge/gprs, I think it might have something to do with handshaking accross towers.
I noticed that this happens when I enable TOMTOMTRAFFIC, it will get the traffic the first time I start tomtom, then 15 minutes into driving when it trys to get a traffic update it will not connect to gprs, it will keep dialing and eventually disconnect. Then after a rest, it will connect again but again after about 15 minutes of driving it has the same problem. Pretty annoying.
Vishny,
I am indeed on Moscow MTS. You mention a new ROM that fixes this - are you referring to the ROM that came out early this year (2.16.9.1) ? If so, I did the upgrade (english version) and it did not seem to help. If there is something more recent that fixes the MTS problem, please let me know where I can download it.
Also, are you having and problems with receiving calls? Thanks.

It's 2.18 ROM with new 2.20.11 radio rom. I'm having no problems with calls or GPRS. Now my device is perfect, I love it. Just try it, you can find it here:
ftp://ftp.xda-developers.com/Uploads/HTC Wizard/ROMS/
Thanks vishny - if that will indeed solve the problem.
Few questions, are there any other places to get the files (i am having problems logging into the one you provided).
Also, is this only for a Russian OS or do they have the same for english? Thanks
Guys, could you please advise me how can I download from FTP? It asks for username & password, but my profile's username and passwords wont work.

One question to Vishny and others - i see the new 2.18 rom update in Russian - does anyone have any idea where I can get it in english?
I assume the GPRS/calls problem lies in the Radio ROM - so another question may be how can i keep my english ROM but update my Radio ROM to one that would work with MTS in Russia?
Many thanks

There is no english 2.18 rom, because 2.18 solves specific problem with one of operators in Moscow. Some guys make hack, they flash 2.16 i-mate or 2.17 qtek english roms, then flash 2.20.11 "russian" radio rom and then install additional RadioDriver_GPRSStall_Wizard_Mar24.CAB they extract from extrom of 2.18 russian rom.
Look at this:
http://www.qtek-mobile.ru/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2131&start=30
vishny,
i installed the new radio rom onto the latest english i-mate rom and thw wizard finally worked with MTS in Russia without any problems. For that I thank you.
Unfortunately now for some reason once in a while the screen goes dark (as if the device is sleeping, the light is still blinking) and the only thing I can do is reset the device. Any ideas?
Thanks
p.s. why does this thing always have problems and as soon as i solve one, another arises :?

HERMES WORST NIGHTMARE - "the cell phone death trap"

I recently moved into a new ‘cell phone death trap’ apartment (apt).
I’ve seen my phone connect, I’m guessing; connect to four different cell towers from my apt. I’ve sat and watched it go from 2 bar E, disconnect, to 1 bar G, disconnect, to no bars 3G, disconnect, and so on….
But here’s the clincher…
Sometimes it will also connect to a full strength edge network, but it indicates it’s roaming by the Triangle icon. Now if I’m on that ‘Triangle” network, my phone works great, meaning I actually can make and receive calls!
But, I’m guessing again, because it shows it is roaming; it also does not like to stay connected to this network. Actually it prefers to switch itself back onto a weak edge network without any signal.
My phone battery doesn’t last more than five hours, NOT TALKING, just in standby because it is constantly switching towers.
At this point I want to throw my Hermes out a window! But I know that wont do any good, because anyone else who come to my apt and has AT&T/Cingular gets the same results.
So here’s my question:
“Can I force my phone to stay on a particular cell tower?”
If so, I love you….
you should re-post over in this thread Daniel's software might be able to solve your problem (or Daniel might have other ideas).
thank you for the suggestion. i tried that and he said, "Sorry nop. It isnt the pourpose of cmp or bs...."
I don't think you can force to a specific tower but you can force to a particular provider:
START/SETTINGS/PHONE/NETWORK/MANUAL
and also select whether you want to force GSM/WCDMA and the GSM/UNTS band:
START/SETTINGS/PHONE/BAND
Maybe by going this route you can lock onto a reasonable signal.
2 other alternatives... Sell the appartment... Buy a landline and donate the Hermes to me

Are you able to change networks?
Are you able to ask your service provider the location of the towers and if they're planning either any upgrades or any more in the area?
If not you may wish to consider the first point, changing service providers.
I know what a pain it can be to have little or no service when needed. Personally, here in the UK, I'm on Orange. Where I lived in Wales it was either Orange or Vodafone that has a decent signal. When I'm out and about with work those are the two popular towers with o2 creeping up and some others too, but for the most part those are the strongest.
I don't, I'm sorry, have any better advice for you. Apart from leave your Hermes on charge when you're home near a window (safely) and carry a bluetooth earpeice around instead Good Luck with your Valiant Quest

I've tried this method as well and it does not help. apparently both the good and the band networks all fall under GSM(900+1800)+UMTS(2100). The other two band options never find a network.

Thank you for your suggestions. Unfortuantly im locked in a 2yr contract, thats how ****ty american cell phone companies do things. Plus, the better providers in the area dont use SIM cards (ie. Sprint/Verizon), so that would mean bye bye Hermes.
Ill will go by the Cingular store and ask about the possible service upgrade, but those fools dont really know whats what, thats why im on xda-dev!
I like the bluetooth idea, ill try find a "sweet spot" in the apt and try that method. Thanks again!
"I have dream..."
My idea just seems possible, however i cant program so who am i too.....
The idea of having blocked cell id numbers. If i could FieldTest or somehow extract the cell ids from the towers i dont want, then create a file that the phone checks against before joining a tower.....
I dont know, just a dream i suppose...
In both cases (roaming and not) are you registered in same operator?
If you're having a difficult time maintaining solid cellular reception, you might want to consider buying an external antenna. Refer to my post here regarding an antenna that can be purchased from Radio Shack. The antenna is now on clearance for $20 and the pigtail is $10. This may or may not help depending upon your location in relation to the towers, but if you try it out, let me know how it works.
Cheers
Yeah, I'm on an 18 month contract... But I'm about 8 months in now
You might even be able to get bluetooth repeaters once you find your, ahem, sweet spot

i believe so. the only reason i think it's roaming is because of the Triangle icon. But my SIM is only authorized for one operator, Cingular.
is there a better way to check?
Thank you very much Daniel!

Call your closest Radio Shack and ask if they have either of those catalog numbers in stock. Worst case scenario is that they won't, however they can check the districts perpetual stock and see how many are available, and if you ask nicely, they can have the antenna and pigtail shipped to their store so you don't have to run all over creation just to get it.
...An even worst case scenario would be if you didn't live in the US or didn't have any Radio Shacks close by.. however I might know of someone who could use their employee discount to cover shipping costs Let me know if you have any questions.

Taze,
I would also recommend that you try one of Daniel's applications - he is working on Comm Manager Pro but I think that Bandswitch will probably help you. I find similar problems to those you describe at work here in the UK with T-Mobile and my battery would often run low even during a day at work. The problem appears to have been caused by the Vario II (Hermes) spending all day jumping back and forward between networks whilst hunting for the best signal. Although the Bandswitch application (very small footprint) will not increase the signal you may find that forcing the phone to operate in a particular band helps - this is very easily achieved via the Bandswitch interface rather than going into settings each time. I now regularly switch to GSM each day when I get to work and it has solved my battery run-down issue completely!
Comm Manager Pro does much the same and more. It allows you to define a location (according to Cell ID and LAC Code) from which you can set the CMP application to (amongst other functions) switch to a particular band - or even turn the phone off).
Given what you have said this may not help but I would certainly give it a go. Good luck.

i wish daniel could add the feature of blocked, preferred, of locked Cell ID's. that would be worth a good amount of money to me....
Hi.
I would like to help you.... I can detect cells and lac but I cant force radio hardware to attach on a particular cell. This a task for Radio ROM. The only posibility (maybe) would be if the operator names are diferent. Could you go to settings a search for operators? Maybe your operator has different name in roaming than non roaming. In that case It would be easy to help you....
Oooo if FieldTest were a controllable application....
Ok what I’ve discovered so far after watching FieldTest for about an hour.
The Good Connection -
LAC 0020
MNC/MCC 31017
NCELL INFO1 700-80 dbm <---- (at least four out of six NCELL maintain a steady 700-80dbm, often all six NCELL)
NCELL INFO2 700-80 dbm
NCELL INFO3 700-80 dbm
NCELL INFO4 700-80 dbm
NCELL INFO5 700-80 dbm
NCELL INFO6 700-80 dbm
BAND 2CS
CHANNEL 1:CCCH (stays, doesn’t change)
The Bad Connection
LAC d6ef
MNC/MCC 31380
NCELL INFO1 140-100 dbm
NCELL INFO2 140-100 dbm <---- (i get two NCELL at the most 140 each, rarely four NCELL, never more)
NCELL INFO3 0
NCELL INFO4 0
NCELL INFO5 0
NCELL INFO6 0
BAND 3:850 (once I saw it switch to PCS on this same MNC)
CHANNEL 1:CCCH/0:BCCH/255<UNKNOWN> (switches between these quite frequently)
So what I’ve interpreted from all that is.
Well I’ve confirmed my ****ty connection. Even though the phone often shows two bars, I can’t make or receive calls. Based on the NCELL db numbers and the constant channel changing, that **** just don’t work.
Most importantly, the phone is always trying to switch to the highest possible band. Because PCS is a lower band than GSM 850, my phone won’t stay on the PCS connection.
O yes, another discovery is, in WM6, if you are connected to a PCS band network, it displays the Triangle icon as if you are roaming but in fact it is not roaming.
So Daniel since you seem to be the best chance for a better life [for my Hermes]:
I need a way to force band selection beyond just GSM and UMTS.
I tried BandSwitch and it does not work for me because all my available connections fall under GSM.
And even beyond that I’d like to be able to force MNC’s, as I believe they are the specific network number.
Or can I block a LAC?
In settings, I only have one operator, Cingular, “Home of the most dropped calls.”
Hi.
I undestand perfectly your frustration and I will try to do what I can althought It doesnt seem easy thing because there isnt any(known) api to manage Radio Rom. Fieldtest is OEM dependent and I imagine It only works for only one manufacturer of radio hardware chip.
Ok, first try. If you start radio phone 10 times....
1) how many times your phone register to roaming (and wished) network?
2) If registed to roaming network, how much time (aprox) stays on it before register to bad cells?.
Why? well ,CMP executes actions when you enter on some place (compound by cells and lacs). You could create a place with your hated cells and then associate the action "reset radio" when registed to those cells (or lacs). In this way if your device falls into bad cells it would be resetted (only radio, not phone) until registed to good cells...
Only an idea....
Dani
If you can determine the direction of the "bad" towers, try lining your walls with lead sheets to block their signals and letting you connect to a prefered tower.

Poor/intermittent Signal - so far so good solution

There are a few thread's already on the site about signal problems with the X1 however many are quite old and I thought a specific one with a (so far so good) solution would be welcomed.
Many people have had problems with their signal being lost or being poor and there are posts on the Vodafone forums, here, as well as many other sites and many suggest they have contacted SE without much success. Mine got so bad I was ready to give up the phone and go to N97.
I had some advice from someone at a local friendly phone store about what may be the problem and he suggested (to stop me claiming on my insurance I'm sure) changing the connection settings so it only looks at GSM.....
.....I did this three days ago and since I have had no loss of signal and my signal strength has been better than ever.
To do this:
Start > settings > comm manager > settings > phone > band
Select your network type : GSM
Not sure of the significance of this change (from auto) but its worked wonders for me
Phone:
O2 UK, R3A, xperiatweak, mms changes, Dashwire, advanced config, spb galore
Good luck and I hope this works for you (let me know how it goes)
Found the same problem when I first received the phone, I too changed the band to GSM, mainly to save battery usage as 3G wasn't needed and noticed the signal is A LOT stronger...
Not noticed any downsides to disabling 3G either as my internet browsing is still very fast using Opera Mini.
maybe a stupid question: with 3g disabled, can the phone still lock in HSDPA?
i dont think so
in theory when its connected to 3g it should still have a gsm link as backup to switch to if there is a problem
still working
A week in now and the signal is still without problems and I've found the battery life of the phone is at its longest since I got the phone at the end of last year
In answer to other posts - I've remained connected to O2 UK Mobile WEb (GPRS, 3G) despite selecting GSM only
This is useful only if you don't need 3G or 3.5G... If your 3G coverage is ok, there is no trouble either... There is a huge change depending your operator and your location
i did this for a couple days and had to switch back. i've NEVER been able to connect to 3g (i have an X1i in america where the X1a is sold), but upon applying this change of setting i couldn't get HSDPA anymore and all my internet/data activities was like creeping death. i could only connect to Edge, which is practically unusable

maybe a stupid question: with 3g disabled, can the phone still lock in HSDPA?

nope! but its going to use EDGE which is also pretty fast.u probably wont notice the difference on a smartphone anyway.

lol are you kidding? when i'm on edge i might as well be tapping morse code across two cans with a string between them. everytime i pull up google maps on edge i might as well pay a homeless guy to steal me map pages, it would take a lot less time..... HSDPA is the complete opposite for me, everything loads almost instantly

HSDPA, will donate for help!!

Hi guys, i know this is a common problem amongst some of us, there are several threads discussing the connection drops but please there must be someone out there who knows something about it.
Basically with HSDPA enabled, the connection will last a random period of time before disconnecting by itself and displaying: cannot connect for an unknown reason.
When HSDPA is turned off, only 3G is used, although this works fine, it is fairly slower.
I am on T-Mobile UK, I have phoned their technical support, we have established it is not the sim card but the phone itself and have tried a variety of steps to solve this, for example receiving band settings for WCDMA, this has not fixed the problem.
I have tried changing the username and password combinations and have tried every combination of every advanced network option. I have used the T-Mobile stock rom 1.43, official HTC ROM 1.66, duttys hg, energyROM, artemis 5.0 and artemis 5.5 (would recommend btw) using MTTY before every flash, and every single different radio combination.
Myself, and many people here would be very grateful for any help posted.
Thanks in advance
Why don't you try Settings > Connections > Advanced network > GPRS tab > change from PAP to CHAP.. and reset... or viceversa.. that helped for me..
Thanks for the post, i've tried all that i've tried all advanced settings, at most they last for a day or so but after a while the connection dropouts seem to worsen
Ok ive just gotten off the phone for the third time with the technical support
basically what they've said is that the hsdpa WILL disconnect because the mobile towers simply can't handle the traffic.
He said in his honest opinion I should disable it because it simply won't work well and there is no fix.
Taking the piss juuuuust a little bit
Mine on t-mobile uk will show H, but usually drop down to 3G. It won't give me an error when it drops down though.
It sounds like its not transferring from H to 3G.
To be honest, i was unaware t-mobile ran HSDPA till I got my HD2 (never showed on my BB).
mine switches between 3G and H too, this happens when the connection is being used (for example loading a web page) when the job is finished (page has finished loading) it turns back to 3G right?
are you saying that your connection never disconnects?
may i ask which radio and rom you are using?
thanks!
For my personal experience, I have for over a month, on versions 1.48, 1.66 by HTC, artemis versions, versions of other French chefs. had no problems,
Login Exchange push 24/24 without any cuts, I solicited the network with opera I passed automatically 3g H, and since February it to completely fall with the problems that everyone encounters (lost connection for several minutes , unable to connect to 3G without hard reset)
to remove the sim chip, I try with another chip of the same operator, another chip from another operator, the problem is still there.
For several days I have also continued a Touch HD, it faces no problems, no problems in connection 24/24.
In short, impossible to challenge any operator, any base station, any sim card.
It is then that the problem come from HD2:
-Software: We all try every combination of rom and radio rom possible.
It is the hardware, maybe the chip integrated into a concern for design, manufacturing concerns on some series, may be dysfunctional due to incompatibilitée between several chips of the phone, short, HTC should look into the problem.

correct, it never disconnects.
It will switch seemlessly between them, when using or not using.
same one it came with. O2 HD2.
ROM 1.43.206.4 (70315) WWE
RADIO 2.04.50.22_2
I've also been struggling with this problem ever since I got my HD2 three weeks ago. However it seems like only a few people experience this.
My case is exactly like cgrec92 described. I'm on a 3.5G network in Denmark (3 Mobile), the phone shows the 3G connection at all times. When things do work and I use Opera/weather/Twitter/email etc, the symbol changes to H and I know the data connection is functioning. I can be using this for a whole hour without any problems.
However, if I put the phone down for a while and then pick it up again to use one of its data services, very often it does not connect to 3.5G (or H) anymore. It will still show the 3G icon on the screen, but there's no data connection. Then I go to Connection Manager and I can see that data connection shows as Off - and after a few seconds it goes back to On by itself That does not mean the problem is solved, as the phone still fails to establish any data connection. What I need to do then is manually turn off data connection and re-enable it again, which makes the 3G symbol immediately change to H. Then everything starts working again - until the next time it stops working...
I contacted the HTC customer service and they said it might be a driver-related issue, recommended a hard reset. I did that and for a few hours I thought it solved the problem, but no, data connection still disconnects by itself.
I spoke to 3 Mobile's technical service and they told me to update my software, which I had already done previously (I'm running stock 1.66 ROM Danish). They also said they never received any such complains about the HD2.
Like cgrec92 I've also played with all kinds of network/band settings, but it did not make any difference.
***
One question: isn't the phone supposed to automatically connect via EDGE when it cannot connect via HSDPA? Because in my case it will only establish data connection via H, never EDGE.
Any advice is greatly appreciated!
My take on this FWIW
It's not the phone!
It's the radio ROM installed.
I live in an an area where T-mobile say I can't get HSDPA.
However, I know that I can. How? Because 3 network uses the same local cell and transmitter as T-mobile and their signal will rip your eyes out!!!!!!!!!
All information obtained from a good friend of mine who works for BT, who, service manage the cells for the networks.
Plus, in this location, the cell traffic is then handled by BTs digiatal backbone which takes it who knows where after that.
So I have a very isolated situation in which I know there is a decent HSDPA signal, but I have had trouble with drop outs on my two previous phones (Nokis 5800 and HTC Touch Diamond 2) and originally on my two T-mobile mobile broadband feeds using Huawei E220 cell network modems.
All fixed when I finally found the right Radio and flashed it on the phones and unlocked and flashed the latest modem firmware.
My broadband connections are always on and never drop out and my HSDPA signal on my HD2 is through the roof!
To further emphasise the point all the equipment is used (when home based) behind solar glass which is notorious for blocking mobile phone signals.
Land on the best one and you will get incresed battery life as well.
Bottom line is try the latest radios (2.08.50.08_02 in my case) and I think you may be surprised at the results.

I have the same problem with the connection dropping. What I did to make it work was to disable HDSPA and putting GPRS to CHAP instead of PAP, and so far I have no problems at all
Thanks for the reply and tips. I also did the same earlier today, except that I did not change PAP to CHAP :O. I was waiting until tomorrow before I posted any results, but I gotta say so far the connection has been stable just like yours.
I also called HTC's customer service in Denmark and the fellow I spoke to was very helpful but he said he has never heard about such problems. He sent me updated network settings via sms, but it did not fix the problem.
I mean, only some users around the world suffer from this problem, right? So what is it that's wrong with our devices? Is it a production fault? If I exchange my phone for a brand new one maybe I won't be unlucky again? When 3 DK finally told you the problem was unfixable, did they mention other users with the same issue? Did they ever offer to replace your phone?

Erm!
It's your radio!
But, I think I did say that in a previous post.
You had a helpful fellow who sent you updated settings?
And he thought that was going to fix your problem?
That was helpful!
It's your radio!
The technicalities are beyond a customer assistant at the end of a phone. They work from a script.
I'll send you the settings.
Have you done this?
Have you done that ?
Never heard of anyone else with your problem!
It's your radio!
T-mobile uses PAP protocol (at least they do here in the UK) and it's a handshake protocol so changing that won't really do anything to the signal definition.
You have it or you don't.
It's your radio!
There is no "production fault".
You are not "lucky" or "unlucky".
You are in an area where you will suffer from this because of the ???????
THE RADIO!
I think I have made my point.
If it turns out that you don't have a radio issue then please feel free to admonish me.
Until then----------
It's your radio!
well I don't mean to sound rude but do you SERIOUSLY think we haven't tried that? ive tried every possible radio available here and every different rom, so excuse us for trying new things.im glad your not having any troubles yourself because it is really annoying
perhaps you could post us your rom and radio?
I don't suppose you could post us your settings in advanced network?
did you use the connection setup?
thanks for your help
Yes, I was about to mention something similar. I haven't tried combining different ROMS & Radios myself, but I know people like cgrec92 who have with no good results.
And if it is the radio, then every 3 Denmark user like me would be experiencing the same problem, correct? I don't think that's the case. Actually when you read the forums you will find users from different countries with this problem, and they/we are not the only ones with a certain combination of ROM/Radio.
So yes, by disabling HDSPA I finally managed to have a stable data connection (but no 3.5G, obviously). At this point no one seems to know the cause of this issue, but I suppose it's naive to expect a future ROM to solve it, after all it's not a widespread problem. Is HTC even working on it? Are we sure it's not our devices that are faulty?
I honestly have no idea, but I cannot just accept this problem and live with it after all the money I put into this phone. That's why I brought up the possibility of having it exchanged for a brand new one in hopes that it will not have this problem.
Any ideas?

I referred to my radio in my previous post -20.08.50.08_02.
My OS ROM is Leo Lite 3.
Connection setup used and no further settings.
My explanation for this is the fringe nature of the received signal.
The radio its constantly 'hunting' for a signal and the radio software has difficulty in locking on.
BTW OS ROM and settings ready don't affect the efficiency of the radio signal.

I appreciate the help, but he doesn't seem to understand the issue here. It's not that we have low connection, or that we cannot connect to the 3.5G network. The problem is that the phone's data connection will automatically disconnect even when we are in an area with full 3.5G signal. The phone will connect for a while and then, moments later, in the same spot and with full signal, data connection is terminated. So I just can't see how the radio has anything to do with that, especially when there are hundreds of other users out there with the same ROM & Radio as us and in the same network. And yet they do not experience this problem.
Ive have similar issues but it depends where i am it appears that some towers its ok where others its not!

The radio differentiates between all the different levels and types of signal and it depends on how exact it interprets the signal. They are supposedly optimized before release and then re optimized with each newly released version. Network operators then have their own network parameters and again the radio has to accommodate this as well. One radio will never satisfy all these criteria and some of you will be in the wrong place at the wrong time on the wrong network with the least effective radio.
I can assure you that I most certainly do understand the problem and that is why, in my own case, I have resolved it.

Gsm signal issue

I have my sgs for 2 weeks now. GSM disconnects around every 2 days.
At service mode (*#*#4636#*#* - Phone information) i can see this repport:
GSM disconnects:
====DATA=====
State: inactive
disconnected with last try
at 00:59
fail because No Error
The question is: why does this happen?
Is this an android issue or a hardware problem?
Any pointers?
Thanks in advance

That's not the problem.
Gsm disconnects just like that ,at home for instance. And when I notice that and try to reconnect (settings- wireless networks- mobile networks - networks operators) it doesnt find ANY of them.
Then I restart the phone and gsm network is back.
If I dont notice disconnection in time (so I can restart phone, people just cannot reach me....quite frustrating...
i see what you mean now.
yes, i've noticed that on mine too, but.... that's because i was fooling around with some new Apps Widgets settings i was testing to control the radio and data to save battery.
Did you install any new Apps recently that might cause that?

Well I installed all kind of apps. but i have the feeling this problem was happening even before that.
And I dont need widgets to control data ( I think) because I set the sgs to use 2g networks only and I dont have apn configured( section is empty. Internet connec. only via wifi.

Well, my sim card is VERY old (2002) and the carrier (Telfort) is roaming into another carrier's network (Kpn) with no extra costs of course like real roaming, but still roaming (I get the little "R" next to the signal strenght bars)
Anyway this never happened with the Nokia 5800xm running Symbian OS and using the same sim card...
Starting to get pissed of with Android...
With Symbian you hack or root or tweak because you want to, not because you NEED to like with Android....
And then you prob. get side effects...
Thank you guys for your time
I would get a new sim card if I were you. Every android phone that I have had seems to work better with a good 3g sim.
Get a new SIM card.
same problem, different phone
i have the same problem on kaiser with flashed android on it.
sim is 2 years old, and now suddenly this happened, tried differents sim cards, but the problem persists. My guess is, it is a software problem.
Maybe i will report when I flash original WM6.1 rom onto it, if you are interested in the result
btw, this happened about two days ago and because of this im buying galaxy s so i hope the problem will be gone with new phone

Why you think the problem will be gone if it's still android and I also got it with my sgs? Or are you counting on Froyo?
Yesterday I upgraded my sgs to froyo jpc with kies. I am new with Android but the post of Aery was so clear that i didnt resist: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=769400&highlight=froyo+upgrade
I did get stuck on reboot but could get out of it after applying a cache/data/factory reset on recovery mode (3 buttons)
Now I am being carefull with the 3rd party apps., and so far so good, no gsm disconnections .
Froyo is of course better that eclair but Android is still disappointing to me.
You flashed Android onto a WM device (i'm impressed); could you not teach me how to flash Symbian onto my SGS?
Voice dialing (over bluetooth or not) and proper connectivity control (network, data, gps and bluetooth) of android is years behind Symbian; and such a well written, light OS, it will just fly on a high-end hardware like the sgs; but that is an issue for another thread.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7938430#post7938430
Pls keep reporting..

I think indeed that's not the same issue. My problem is that the radio signal get turned off during inactivity. That's why I got connection back after reboot: radio signal gets turned on again; later I learned how to turn radio signal back on without rebooting, but that is just a remedy , no real solution.
Try to upgrade to froyo, make a factory reset and be carefull with 3rd party apps. With froyo you will need less interfering tools anyway
I dont thing that my old sim card is the problem, but i'll try to replace it anyway...but first things first
Btw dou you have 3g turned on? Cause I never...
Another mistery: When I have 3G on I see those bars (signal strenght) dancing and that "death grip" thing happening:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LROTHrTR92k
But when I have it on 2G only the bars doesnt move even if I strangle it with both hands.....
Please repport later how it's going...
I had the same issue, i sent mine back and got my money back, i had also tried with different simcards and resets and nothing worked.. so hopefully my new galaxy wont have this problem. Its strange that these problems are so rare though.. But as long i get it going ill be a happy man.
fourth day with JPC ( and 4 days after a factory reset) so far so good no disconnections . I think problem is gone...
Today just to be safe, I got a new sim card....the other one was too old anyway(8 years)
i have the same issue, for a few days i can't get 3g. i'm seriously wondering about sending back my sgs. i've ttried all the settings, changed my sim..nothing...begin to think it was a fullish thing to change Desire to SGS..

Well... this is not the same issue.
I have 3G (WCDMA) disabled. I only use 2G (GSM) and WIFI for data/internet connection.
I Dont have a data account, I dont need it therefore I disabled 3G in order to save battery.
If you do want to use 3G, just go to settings - wireless and network - mobile network settings - network mode and set auto-mode (GSM/WCDMA or 3G/2G)
If it doesn't work, apply a data/factory reset and try again.
And if it doesnt work, it's probably hardware related and you should return it or send it for repair.
My issue is more complicated; next to the fact that I dont want to use 3g, my carrier is roaming to another network and probably Android OS or the firmware cannot handle it properly.
Android is still premature and the "Samsung - Android integration" seems to need a lot of development as well.
It is just a shame that basic functions like proper connectivity control just wont cut it. And Google is not doing any good either.
And dont let me get started on the voice recognition issue......
Hardwarewise, the SGS is superior that htc desire.....I wonder how it would perform if running Symbian^3 OS or Meego.....
I get a great sound quality from the stock music player just by mixing the equalizer and using the music clarity effect...just great...better than any other device I tried.
And the OFFLINE Gps experience is just great as well: the combination SGS - Motonav - External Bluetooth gps device is working like a charm.
I wouldn't change my sgs just yet......
yesterday i was swiching sims to determine if is a sim fault and suddenly i have my 3g/h back. happy owner again. i've tried all to do this, from firmware upgrade to servide mode settings..i don't know why but i'm ok again...

Hello,
I know its been a long time since you wrote this thread but I just came by it!
I have the exact same problem with you (I had it since August) even now with the official froyo. I tried factory reset and no new apps (that could cause the problem) but it still disconnects randomly in GSM mode. However, when I have it on auto (gsm and wcdma) I have no issues. I just disconnect data from the power button in froyo. I am wondering if you ever found a solution..
Chryssa
Well, I am subscribed to this topic so I saw your post.
Good and bad news:
First the bad one: No solution yet, it keeps disconnecting IF I stay on "gsm only".
And the good (or a little better) news:
I noticed that on sgs, using "gsm only" or "gsm/wcdma (auto mode) makes no difference on battery consumption....
By the way, this is a Samsung issue, not really an Android one.
On a HTC Desire HD, you can use "gsm only" mode with no problems...
Thank you for your answer!
I noticed that about the battery too. So not too bad, I just have to keep it on auto mode then..
Same issue
Im having the same issue but in a optimus t the worst part is that i cant get service at all.. when i press change network preferred it wont change and when i try to press on turn on radio it wont work either....
