The first time this happened to me I figured it was a fluke. Now I've had a third time where in mid phone call my Epic has "thought" it's battery was drained to 0 and hung up my call then proceeded to shut down. The first time was in a busy train station in Chicago, don't remember the situation the second, and today was when I got another call beeping in while I was on the line. Each time when I booted the phone back up it showed plenty of life left on the battery.
Has anyone else experienced this or could it be my phone? I wish I could remember specifics from the first two occurrences, but I believe it could have been a call waiting situation as well.
FWIW, I'm on the MTD CleanGB 1.0.3 rom.
Does it go through a shut down or is it just off? If it is just off may be loose battery connections. Oh you said it shut down on the call....maybe it was a modem crash. Try reflashing a modem.

Mine actually did this last night while I was on the phone

It actually goes through the shutdown. Does the low battery double beep and pop up, then says shutting phone down.
Might need to wipe the battery stats then re-calibrate the battery. Mine has done this before, but I'm pretty sure it was from throwing the battery at my wall.

Quite possible. I think I didn't bother calibrating the last couple of times I've flashed a ROM. Going to go ahead and do that and hopefully it doesn't happen again.

Ya I've had the same issue I would have like 14% and while I'm in a call it would shut down
Just wipe status and calibrate it and it should be fine

I've had this happen, only on cm7 though.
Doesn't happen often so I've not been worried about it
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
This used to happen to me ALL the time. It was so frustrating, as soon as it hit 15% if I was talking it'd shut right down. Thankfully flashing the new GB roms seems to have fixed the problem. I sure hope it doesn't happen in CM7
I have this issue regardless of rom. Happens when on a call and low battery alert sounds.
Well, just did it to me again. I calibrated the battery after upgrading to the latest MTD cleanGB yesterday. I was in a building that had poor signal granted, but same thing dropped call, low battery popped up and it shutdown. I had 60% battery left.
Related
When I am talking on the phone and the low battery alert sounds (at 15%, or any % when it plays the low battery sound), it shuts down and cuts off the call. It did this on DK28 and now on EB13 also. Has anybody else noticed this? I assume it's a bug, but wouldn't surprise me if it was intentional seeing as how the camera doesn't function with the battery low.
My phone does the same thing. Running Bonsaai4all 3.0.0, EB13. Very annoying. However, once I restart the phone, I can make calls again. Odd indeed.

My phone did this tonight for the first time while I was in the car. I plugged in the charger and turned it back on and on the lock screen it said I had 51% battery left.
Uggh. Sorry to resurect a somewhat dead thread, but...
It did it again to me. Dropped call as soon as the low battery alert sounded.
EC05 now, with the Bonsai 4.0 rom.
I've got a OEM battery replacement coming in the mail this week, so i'll try that to see if it makes any difference.
AND THEN, when the phone restarts it has more than 50 % battery.
WTF.
Is this happening to anyone else?
Are you running stock, di18, eb13, eco5? More details please!
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
sorry, was just wondering if anyone else had this happen, running eb13 viper rom.
This has happened to me, at the
time I had syndicate 1.0.2. It did a soft reboot and didn't actually hang up till my phone finished rebooting. The whole time well it was on the booting video the call still worked. Then it booted to the lockscreen and the call ended.
Reminds me of my palm pre.

Hey, they called this phone the "Epic" for a reason, it only does things in epic proportions.
I've had that problem on the EB13 Syndicate, then today one the EC05 Syndicate... I fixed it last time, but can't remember how. I just wiped battery stats and did calibration, so I will let you know if that did it.
this happens to me whenever i get a phone call and i have less than 15% battery. it has happened on EVERY rom i have used

I made a post about this a few weeks ago. I remember it happening on dk28 and everything since, multiple roms. Right now I am using eb13 with ec05 modem but haven't had a call yet whan my battery was that low. I can't believe not very many people have complained about this.

Still happens on EC05 with SRF and Rodricks kernal.
well even after loading a new kernal and rom, still happens. I just bought a 3500mah battery, FML
Can't wait to get rid of the epic. Had the issue since EB13. I guess it's not bad as iphone dropping calls all the time, but still unacceptable!

yup. It's annoying as F - I have to cut the person off and say "My battery is dead I'll call you back" as fast as possible.
Then the phone reboots and it has 30+ % battery.
Seriously stupid.

Are you running SetCPU or an Undervolt settings? When a battery gets to a low percentage, the voltage is lower so any undervolt settings will actually be even lower and the phone will crap out. At 40% my phone would not wake and totally black out, needed to pull battery. Found out I had undervolted 200 Mhz by 100 mV. Pushed that back to zero and no more problems.
It could also be a bad battery, especially with the varying percentage from reboots like that.
no undervolt. Just whatever the rom+ kernal settings are is what I run.
I should get the new battery this week. Hopefully that'll fix the problems

Yes blame the phone for everything when running a custom rom
Anyone noticing this? Both my wife and I have noticed a sudden drop in battery life, even though we are on different OS's and don't recall any new software.
Likely to be unrelated, but it's just strange.
I'm on Bionix 1.3.1 with Go Launcher
She's on Stock Froyo with Launcher Pro.
my battery life has been jumping all over the place, and my phone has been getting in the habit of randomly shutting off
bye bye samsung
if you're rooted, perhaps try going to Recovery and wiping battery stats?
Wiping battery stats from recovery has been known not to work right. Download the Battery Calibration app from the market for free. Just charge your phones to 100%, open the app and press the calibrate button, then unplug your phone from the charger. Then fully discharge your battery and charge back to full without a break. Hope it helps!

Just some thoughts, one thing I've noticed here in Birmingham at least is that, regardless of ROM, my phone swaps backs and forth between 3G and 4G constantly. It definitely affects battery life and it's something unique to my area I believe. When I go to Atlanta, it'll stay on HSDPA and as a result I get longer battery life. T-Mobile actually had widespread issues with this and supposedly fixed it but from the sounds of things it's still a problem in many areas.
As far as phones shutting off randomly, that could be your ROM. I had that problem on one of the CM7 nightlies but after going back to stock with Odin and giving it another whirl, that issue went away.
same here and I re-calibrated my battery already..
both mine and gf's battery are worse now.
Our phone is 1-year-old..and it is ONLY 1-year-old...
cant believe the battery life can last that LONG...
Ok, my battery(atleast I believe it's my battery) is having a serious issue, so hopefully someone will be able to help me out on this one. After flashing multiple roms and such over time now, this has never happened till now, basically whats going on is my phone will be completely charged, then ill unplug it and mess around with it for a short time then say the battery percentage is at 75% well randomly the phone will just completely shut off. When turning it back on the battery will be completely dead, or on occasion it will either be slightly the same percentage or lower, but most of the time completely dead. Ive been running the same old stock evo battery since the day the evo came out and im currently running Gruesomwolf's shooter e3d rom which ironically this all started happening the first time I flashed it. So hopefully someone can help out with this, been thinking the battery is just done for, but im not sure. So I figured i'd ask for some help and opinions on what to do haha

since no one's said it, I think your battery is pining for the fjords.
Might want to clear battery stats and charge to full once while the phone is turned off, but I really think daisies are being pushed up...
Check and clean the contacts on both the battery and on the phone itself, being careful not to short the battery while cleaning it. Then, reinstall the battery and make sure theres not too much or any play where contact may be lost. If you do that and still have a problem, its definitely new battery time.

your battery might be dead but you should either try 1 of 3 things first:
1 - you can calibrate your battery
2 - Flash a new Kernel
3 - Flash a new Rom
you may find aosp roms/kernels in the link in my sig, if you are interested. hope i helped ^_^

Sounds like its toast to me as well. But you can try calibrating like others have mentioned just for sh*ts and giggles. It may or may not help.
Unplugging your battery and dropping a ton of percentage...that's normal with most evos...lack of an SBC kernel

If u clean the contacts use a qtip and 91% rubbing alcohol. Let it sit for 30 mins so the alcohol can completely evaporate. Then charge til green light with phone off, boot into recovery wipe battery stats, and cache and dalvik while ur there, reboot to phone run it completely dead recharge to green while phone is still off. Use like normal afterwards if battery is still acting up time to euthanize it and get a replacement
Edit: by 91% alcohol I mean the bottle says 91% on it not like 91% alcohol mixed with 9% water its the purest alcohol u can buy at the store

Thought I'd ask the experts in all things Glacier...
A couple of weeks ago I found that my phone wasn't charging as quickly as normal. One night I plugged it in, got up 5 hours later and found it had only charged 50%. I left it plugged in a few more hours, and everything seemed ok, but I didn't use the phone much. Then this started happening consistently, and with the screen brightness set anything past 1/3, I was literally losing 2% per minute. The display appears to be the big drain - nothing else really even registers.
So I ordered a replacement battery, ran it dead and recharged twice, and I'm still having the same problem.
So the question is, with the battery now eliminated as the problem, is it possible my Rom is causing some screen glitch (turning on at random times?), or has my phone decided that it's been dropped in too many times and it has some internal damage that's causing the screen to draw more power than it should?
Related question, how does one restore darkside sense 4 Rom? Is out the same procedure as stock roms?

Have you tried another rom? Or maybe reflashing? It might also be a good idea to re-calibrate your battery to make sure you aren't getting wrong readings of your battery.

Thanks for the suggestion. The new battery isn't OEM, so a calibration might be in order. I downloaded an app and I'll try it out later today when I can charge my phone back to 100%.

The battstats.bin file that is deleted when "calibrating" the battery is located in /data. That said, just flashing a ROM wipes this file. Just make sure you flash on a full charge and all is well.
Be aware that there are several items that can be the culprit in the scenario. The charger, cable, port, charging circuitry and battery are all part of this setup. Try to swap out as many of these items as you can until you narrow it down, if reflashing doesn't help.

I'm a little confused about how some of those would factor in.
The drain only happens when the screen is on, and the brightness is turned up beyond about 25%.
It's not that the phone won't charge, its that it does it slowly, and the display is using waaay more power than it should be.
Screen off=1%/h battery drain.
Screen on lowest brightness=20%/h
Screen on highest brightness=120%/h
Although the problem might be resolved now. I have the screen set to max and my charge hasn't started at all while I've been typing this out.
Guess I'll see hours the day goes, but it would appear that the battery calibration did the trick.
*EDIT*
Nope. Still draining too fast. According to the battery drain app, I'm still losing 120%/h on a higher brightness setting.
Time to back up my apps and try reflashing my Rom I guess...
This sucks.

Update: Tried my wife's battery in my phone, same crazy drain, so that excludes the battery for sure.
Did a restore, unfortunately got stupid and only backed up my downloaded apps, so 36 updates later and one manual genius button apk install and I'm back to where I was minus a few notepad notes...
Battery use still seemed high at first, but I think it was swapping the batteries around with two different charge levels that threw off the tracking. I actually seem to be back to normal now. Battery use is nowhere near what it was, even on a medium brightness setting.
Conclusion: Glitch in the OS. Restore did the trick.
Thanks to all for the assistance. Hopefully this helps someone else down the road.
Edit: Spoke too soon. Issue continues. Has to be the phone itself at this point.
Sad... I liked this phone.
Oh well, I guess I have an excuse to buy an Amaze now. Thanks again for the suggestions.
