Dual boot android on Samsung Focus - Focus General

Hello guys!
I recently bought a new Samsung Focus and I have to say: good job Samsung. A couple of weeks ago, I heard about a "hack" from XDA devs that lets you dual boot android and wm7 on it. So I was wondering if I could get some help from our beloved forums to get more information or links in order to dual boot...
P.S: sorry for my bad English
Thank you very much everyone! Alpha8768
Sent from IE9 for Samsung i917.

wondering
I heard the rumors too but could not find the sources or tutorials, please post if any have anything too share

I think they were all rumours

Freak, because we got clear information about it :/ Maybe the team who created the exploit (supposed to be the same exploit than on the HTC HD2) decided to not release their work? I'll try to search more when I'll be on my computer...

Well over in the main WP7 forum they managed to get money rounded up to buy a Focus for cotulla/DFT. He has since posted a picture of a focus with MAGLDR on it. This would be the first step to custom ROM's but there was never any release info on MAGLDR or anything else.

Any new info on this would be greatly appriciated

Seconding this request. Much as I like my Windows Phone, I'd really like the flexibility of an Android and don't have any money to buy anything.

Try bartering your phone on ebay

Also drooling in wait of this feature...
I will say I do love my unlocked samsung focus via the DFT and I know that the magldr is how one would dual boot this phone, I just don't know where to get the gingerbread rom for this model (v1.3). I'm dying to find the answer because I use my other phone which is an android to allow me a completely free phone via sip and google voice. I can't find an app for wp7 that allows this so I am basically just wanting to do this just for that feature because lets face it... not paying for a phone and having one over wifi is a big plus. WP7 just lacks in this area. All the apps that supposedly allow you to do it for free are just a bunch of proprietary crap. So lets see it guys... android on the wp7!!! (can we just use the htc hd2 android rom for this since the dft enabled an htc hd thing in the rom that does work for this phone?). Any and all help/comments/questions are greatly appreciated in this area.. even just pointing out a lil documentation to help get me the know-how to figure it out for myself would be nice. Thx.

I dont think its that simple, the MAGLDR that was put on our Focus's while its still MAGLDR its a cut down version, and Cotula's twitter he explains it a bit better.
I'm with you on getting the Focus to run Android, I think everyone with a Focus would like that
Theres the HaRET thread which was first used to get windows mobile to boot into Android, which is making great progress.
Personally I think the Samsung Captivate would be a good canidate for the rom, but the major difference in their is
Captivate Processor: Cortex A8 Hummingbird Processor(Samsung)
Captivate Internal Memory: 2GB
Focus Processor: QSD8250, Qualcomm's processor, same as HD2
Focus Internal Memory: 8GB
The processors will be the hardest to get to work unless someone can break down how both of them work, it probably highly unlikely though
Theres the Vibrant(just like Captivate, but on T-mobile)
And even the Nexus S, but still that darn processor :'(

No news? Really would be nice if we had a dual boot

Someone would have to convince DFT to add 'Boot from SD Android" to MAGLDR like the HD2 has.... and then someone would have to cook an SD Android build... so while possible it's not probable.

Just checking to see if anyone has any update

Would be soooooo nice! I dont use DTF, im happy with my OS like as, but, a dual bot is a plus that cant pass!

The HTCANDROID project! Let's get it running!

Hey!
As i've previously mentioned here once (I think), i started a small forum where I tried to gather all the setups for running Android on various HTC models. Now that the HTC G1 (Dream) is soon released, we will will get some very interesting challenges while trying to build Android ROM's, etc..
This forum is great, but its also very big. Thought that it might be a good idea to have our android resources on a separate forum?
Anyways, thought i could register a domain and such, but for now the forum is at http://www.connect-utb.com/htcandroid
Some of you are there already! Hopefully, with the experienced user base we have here, we can get Android ROMS and whatnot for our HTC models, as the HTC Dream looks rather poor. (Although better devices will surely come in the future).
you must be joking. Android is a total OS unlike apps that we see all over which are portable among HTC devices. It takes months alone just to get Android as it is today for the kaiser. Mostly everything for WM can be ported among other devices which some exceptions to nontouch devices. It'll be a long time until you see Android ported over to more devices than now. My suggestion would be to use a device that's got android projects already in progress or at your nearest convenience to buy a device with android on it.
Think we misunderstand each other, but you dont believe that if we can extract the android ROM from the HTC Dream, and modify and install it on lets say, the Kaiser?
You can always try before saying that it isn't going to work.
I will track this post because i'm very curious by the Android OS.
I get it...and completely understand what this is about...it's HTC...which means theoretically we should be able to at least somewhat get it working...I've started a wizard thread on your new forum in hopes that any information or progress getting it ported over gets posted all in one location for easy access....kudo's for thinking ahead as I dont think android is going anywhere soon and while this forum is very useful it's mostly for winmo devices....nothing wrong with speading the wings a lil bit and branching out...
looking forward to the press conference!!
I would say we should be able to get Android to run on the OS level of our devices, but it will probably need a bit of modifying. However, since it's open source I'm hoping the modifying will be a lot easier because of this.
Hey,
I was just on HTC homepage ( htc.com ), where the G1 is shown.
They printed the specs, which are very similar to the diamond
Same chipset, same rom size, same ram size,...
SO I think, it would be ( maybe easily?) possible to port android to the diamond

Same here!
If my memory does not fail, I remember that one of the first peaks at Android was being run in a Blue Angel. So, I guess there is a big chance that we might in fact be able to see Android running on more than one device (of course, you will have more or less features depending on the device's capabilities and hardware limitations, namely apps that work with an accelerometer, etc).
Maybe, the development should be worth following because as much as I don't want to believe it, my device (Blue Angel) will only trick death for so long (by death I mean not being able to move to newer versions of WM) and we will need a way to pass the time .
HTC Touch Vogue in progress of being ported
Hey don't forget about the senior member "DZO" that started ANDROID porting to HTC Vogue and it is Successful
This is his direct link to the files : http://cs-alb-pc3.massey.ac.nz/vogue
And here is the link to the posting: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=382265
I think he did a GREAT job porting Android. I am running Android 0.9 with most of the featuress except installing programs but only because he is the only one that does that. So, he needs help! I am sure... Plus, on this site people are cheeping in for HTC Diamond so he can work on that too...
Here is the link: http://www.myhtcphone.com
So, if you want something done we should start by contributing either money, or programming support! I wish I knew how to program this
ahhhh I wish I would have fully functional Android on my HTC
Thanks for the support! The forums are slightly active now!
Hopefully, we will be able to get Android running more or less flawless soon! As pointed out, its possible!
he he nice link, it seems that there are allready htc devices running with android.
just wondering, is it possible to have dual boot in one device ?
hmmm, seems to have no desktop syncing.. this may be a huge set back for anyone trying to get androig running on another HTC device.

well currently (or in the case of the vogue) android is being booted via haret (a linux bootloaded) running on top of windows mobile.. so i guess its already kind of dual boot
For now, Android has to be run from within Windows Mobile, so no true dual boot yet
Already started

Someone ported Android for BlueAngel?
Please can someone tell me if Android is already running in BlueAngel? If there is a way show me how. Thanks Man!!!
Maybe I'm mistaken, but wasn't Android made so that it can run on a wide range of devices. I, for one, can't wait till its ported to samsung omnia. Damn, that would be good!
@Coldheat,
What does the cab file do? Its an OS, so cab file??

[CLOSED] ANDROID/MAEMO/LINUX on HD2:) [NO MORE ACTIVE!!]

Im not going to update this thread anymore.
It has been a terrible experience here.
All the updates from now on will be on irc channel ..
I hope everyone will be happy and excited about this closure.
Cheers.
Cant we have dual boot on the HD2. it will be cool to have android 2.0 and windows 6.5 on the phone, it will surely kick some ass. and do you think that this phone is upgradable to windows 7
Only possible for dual boot as you need to run harret to get it to boot into linux - android stuff.
Acer Liquid, coming on november will bring Android powered by a Snapdragon processor and wvga screen, I don´t know how it works but maybe it´s rom could be ported easier to HD2? and adding the Sense ui from Hero? I´m sorry I know it´s not easy, but since I´m not a developer I just can see these steps inside my head

Cool! I like WinMo, but I would prefer to try Android, and since no hardware is better than HD2´s, and new possibilities to port Android successfully are coming, I think a new monster could be born here
yes, i`m definitally for this thing.... there will be no problem if leo won`t support wm7, if it will be able to run android...
In fact it will support wm7, but thats up to the OEM's if they want to release a wm7 test rom for these cortex 8 devices =].
HTC have says no to android on HD2, so if its going to happen your going to have to do it yourself.
What would be required? Android 1.6+ supports other CPUs including Snapdragon so what else is required to get it to work with Android? Would be very neat.

who wants andorid 1.6 on the hd2. what we want is the full version of android 2.0
Definitly 2.0
maybe the release of a htc android device with the same hardware as the hd2 will make it easier for developers - but better off getting in the mindset that it won't work
the hero has the same processor as the hd1 doesn't it (and android development on that seems very difficult and slow)?

it would be good to see the progress.. I have read the last few pages on the blackstone and haven't seen anything from the developers. Last update was the 18th where it went back from v1.6 to v1.5?
I can't see why time is being devoted to 1.5, surely the focus should be to work on the most up to date version of android than taking a step back.
Obviously i'm not a developer for the android project on the hd1, but if one comes to the hd2 I will donate to a project with quicker progess on android 1.6, preferably 2.0.....
I have one of these HD2's on pre-order just for this reason I hope I can get something accomplished, and am willing to work on flashing and dumping things

HTC HD2 & Android

To all the gurus here at XDA I am getting the HTC EVO 4g tomorrow, but I really don't like the carrier for this amazing unit so I am considering bring it back since I like Tmobile better. My question is, if I purchase the HD2 and root it will i be able to load Android 2.1 in it?
Please advise
Thanks to all of you in advance
Please read the forum posts for this.
at the moment u cant load android on the hd2!
dcordes and the other guys who r working on the "linux on htc hd2" project made a functional kernel but there isnt a working android version yet. it will take a while until they will get android on it. i really dont know how much time it will take but it could take 1 year more or less i think.
It could be a very long time before there's a port thats as functional as a phone made for android. There still isn't a perfect android port for any winmo phone yet, and some of them have had android being developed for years. If you want to use android full time, get an android phone, not a winmo phone. Even if there's a bootable port soon for the hd2, it won't be very functional and wont be able to use some of the phones hardware (bluetooth, wifi, camera, etc). I'm not expecting a fully functional port for a year or 2.... if ever.
Sorry for my ignorance, what will i be able to do by rooting this hd2, i really don't like windows mobile
do some research!!!
Going to start swearing at people soon,
Surely if Android had made it on to the HD2 it would have been all over the NET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You can somehow manage to put your new EVO hardware into a HD2 body and there you go you got the first full funciton running Android HD2.
Not even if you search here you could get answer but you could even google and it will direct you here.

You are confusing a lot of things here. You can't root a windows mobile phone the way you mean for Android. What you can do is to install an SPL or Hard SPL that allows you the flixibility to load up customised roms, ie customised windows operating systems, onto your winmobile device, ie HD2.
You have got a lot of reading ahead of you before you can make any sort of decision and start to do things to your phone that could seriously injure its health! The first decision you need to make is whether you want to go down the Android route or Winmobile.
Once you have the answer to this you can start to do your research and learning in the appropriate fora.
Hope this helps.
Moving this to General/Q&A.

ive noticed the galaxyS/Captivate and the Focus are very similar in hardware except for the memory card syncing with the phone itself and the cpu focus:snapdragon / galaxys/captivate hummingbird, so i was wondering if anyone is working on it already or maybe attempting to gather information on a new beginning for this phones journey into xda

android on WP7
Theoretically is possible now that the WP7 is jailbraked.... it just has to be installed as a partition on the drive, as we can no longer run it from within WP7 and get all its features running. This is because WP7 will not let you stop processes that belong to other apps like phone or the UI so android can be booted like we do on WM (correct me if I'm wrong.....I don't think I am). Also the encoding of wp7 storage is tricky and partitioning it is hard....ask the guys trying to install WP7 on the HD2.....I'm pretty sure that we will see it done very soon as it only needs a loader program in the beginning of the phone to choose your operating system...like we see when we have Linux and windows on our PC.
As for the other part of this is the drivers that are not developed in droid for the focus.....maybe the captivate looks like the same phone but inside can be a hole new ball game. We have a led flash on our cameras which something tells me the camera is not the same. The captivate have a hummingbird processor as the focus has a snapdragon (but i don't think this would be a problem as a lot of other DROIDs have snapdragon). Samsung maybe just "semi-cloned" the look of the device because the captivate is one of the most selling phones they got. The internals can be completely different
Hi All
I was hoping someone might know if there has been any development on the Samsung Focus as far as getting Android on to it and getting WP7 off?
I've got the option of taking a Captivate but I really like the SnapDragons and I prefer the outer case of the Focus.
Anyone heard anything more about Android on the Focus recently?
Anyone know? I'm going to give this phone back today if not as I have searched and searched and can't find anything on it :-(

Why? Hummingbird is faster than SnapDragon in many ways (the only reason Focus does not use Hummingbird is because WP7 only support SnapDragon chip at this time). If you want Android, get Captivate or other Android phones. There is no sense to spend money to buy a WP7 phone and hack it that way. Although Android is open source, phone hardware drivers are not. Devs can only working on getting ROMs assembled using phones with similar hardware. But Samsung never has any Snapdragon android phone before.
LOL how would you go about partitioning off the memory? With the way WP7 integrate external memory with the internal memory? Thus there would be no storage because you can't even see anything stored on the SD. Androids also run on a 4 button system, WP7's have only 3. Some of the hardware isn't the same, and even every galaxy class phone has diffrent hardware. Go buy and android phone or an HD2 if you hell bent on running 2 OS. Also if you would've read the WP7 development forum as to why not to ask this question you'd know why they are not doing it.

Oh, on the point of WP7's memory allocation - I think you need to read up on it a bit more too as there is a way you can seperate the SD.
Got a captivate yesterday anyway... not sure if I'll keep it though, might move to the Desire HD - it's much more like my HD2 which I really liked.

Because the HD2 Android counter part, EVO, is a Snapdragon phone. I said Samsung does not have a Snapdragon Android phone out there. It is very difficult to use ROM parts from other manufacturers.
Remember Devs are mostly called Chefs. They mix and pick different parts and assemble them into ROMs. They are not developing them like from source code to ROMs. They can only work on the parts that are offered by phone makers, not from scratch.
Thread Closed! Hardware may be very similar but the architecture is very different. Would be too much of a time consuming job regardless for the moment. This question has also been asked many times. Please search the Windows Phone 7 related forums before posting. Thanks.

HD2 is way better than most phones. It's robust, proven and moreover it can run almost all Mobile OS as well as Ubuntu. If you are just one of the regular customers who doesn't like to tinker with the phone any phone is good but if you are into tinkering HD2 all the way.
Yes i like to mess around with my phone and play with different OS's and before when I had the Hd2 i loved it because of the screen size and and a few other things. I love the Vibrant also but i would also wanna play around with the WinM7 software. I mean if I already own the Vibrant would it really be worth it to trade or sell it to get a HD2. Whats the trade off if I get the HD2 other than that the HD2 can pretty much run any OS. Would I be down grading as far as specs and memory.

Downgrading no absolutly no hd2 has a 1ghz snapdragon and the vibrant has a 1ghz humming bird processor about the same a large portion of android phones carry the snapdragon processor and imo the hd2 was ahead of its time when it was released cause it still keeps up with all the in coming phones even the droid well sorta ja ja ja (still an hd2 can be over clocked up to 1.5 ghz) so i would definetly go with hd2 seeing as you like to tinker and you can run android as well with little to no flaws atleast not on the build i have
ok thnks i think im oing to make the move.
