Editing this as I'm desperate for help and things have moved on since I first posted, below is where I am up to post 11 of this thread.
I flashed Vegacomb b (exe), it restarted but stayed on the warning about paying for vegacomb for 10-15 minutes which didn't seem right so I held power for 6 seconds and it turned off. After that it would never turn on or go into recovery (I know all the methods, none worked).
Today I unhooked the battery, when I plug the battery back in the screen comes on for a second but then it's as it was, unresponsive. HOWEVER, if I plug the mains in with the battery disconnected then it immediately tries booting but still sticks at the warning (left for over 20 minutes). If I plug the battery in while on this screen then remove the mains it stays on. The power button is unresponsive through this so I still cannot get into recovery.
Any more ideas that haven't been mentioned?
I've tried well over 100 times to get into recovery but it's not happening
anyone willing to have a go at fixing (cheaply!) if I send them it?
Original Post:
Hi guys, just managed to (re?) install Vegacomb (b, from exe), it restarted but stayed on the white screen with the warning text about paying for Vegacomb for over 10 minutes so I held down the power button to turn it off, now I cannot do anything to boot it up (tried holding power button down from 0.5 seconds to 60 seconds!), it also won't boot into recovery. Is there anything at all that can be done to get this going?
cheers
OK, I've tried holding down back while plugging in (fully charged btw), tried all variations of button presses with back and power, with and without USB, with and without power cable.
Only got until 10PM (UK time) to get this sorted (it's now 6PM) so any help/advise would be appreciated
Flash back to modded stock then try again.
From modded stock go app drawer and run recovery
From recovery wipe data, cache then go advance then wipe dalvik
Then press back
Then install zip from SD
Choose vegacomb from whatever directory on your SD you copied it to then confirm
If you ain't Got Vegacombe zip then download it.
Or you could run the .exe again but the above is my preferred method.
Also you might need to download modded stock v2 if you ain't already got it.
Good luck.

the Vega won't turn on and won't go into recovery, cannot flash anything, nothing comes up on PC, tried all variations of the back and power buttons (inc back, plug in power & usb, press power, leave 2 seconds and release back) over 100 times. it's like it's dead.
the only thing it does is show a blue LED when I plug the power cable in
I've read that if you got less than 50 or 60% battery it wont go into flash mode (back button 2 seconds - power & back 2 seconds)
Have you got enough battery cause mine takes half a day to charge.

100% (solid blue LED), been on charge for over 24 hours
I'm baffled mate, I've had same issue couple of times but after 10mins or so I've always got it to power back on.
Bricked
I've had the same problem and although quite drastic, remove the rear cover and unplug the battery connection (the multipin one with red and brown/black wires).
With the mains plug out,i found that if you press volume up and power with the wires unplugged and leav eit for a few mins then use back + power it will start as you need it to.
It may take a few tries but i have managed to do it following this procedure about 7-8 times.
Hope this helps.

I had trouble getting into recovery when the Vega was 100% charged (i.e. charge led was solid blue). When I let it discharge a little so it was flashing with the charger plugged in, I managed to get into recovery then.

I can't discharge it though as it doesn't turn on, left it 14 hours from last night, back at work again now and it still says fully charged
got the battery disconnected now to give it a try
Disconnected battery for around 10 minutes, put it all back together, still can't boot or get to recovery
EDIT: it works when the battery is disconnected (goes to the Vegacomb warning screen but no further, cannot power off or get to recovery still)
any ideas?
Anyone got any ideas?
it's meant to be unbrickable from what I've read so there must be a way around it but I'm out of ideas!
its user error. remeber to put it into recovery mode you need the power cable plugged into it too as well as usb.

Hi, this may not help but i had trouble flashing the stock rom because of the battery being fully charged, could only get the screen to light up so left it over night and then went through the normal routine and got into recovery.

Hi there
Just one question, how do you know for sure it hasn't gone into nvflash mode?
I know what you are going through trying to get the ruddy thing into nvflash, it's a mare if you don't quite get that timing right but seeing as the screen doesn't light up when it's in nvflash what is telling you whether you are actually in it, other than the screen coming on to say you are not or relying on a windows message?
As I said I had the same problems many a time but I use Audi tool now to tell me if nvflash has started, I got it off the Modaco forum, but when you are in nvflash it actually tells you so rather than relying on perhaps windows to tell you it has happened
If you haven't come across the audi tool before then just do a search for it on Modaco, I don't know if they have got it here on XDA.

wow, i'm quite surprised by the number of people who are taking their batteries out when they think there is a problem. You should never need to do this unless it is actually faulty.
Ok yes the Vega is nearly indestructible I have had my in a complete mess many times and have never had to do anything that hard to recover. Some times it will be a pain to get into nvflash mode but this can always be done just have to be patient and know a couple of tricks.
If you have tried the back button and then the power a few times and nothing there is another method.
Instead unplug the power then hold the back button down, whilst holding down the back button plug in the power release the back button after a couple of seconds (I like to count to 5)
I am hoping that you already have the USB cable connected and the right drivers installed on your PC.
Billy..
If you need more help head over to TabletRoms and look in the Vega forum (sorry XDA guys just there is a lot of other useful information there)

TabletRoms has been no help for me, there's been no reply at all for my problem but there has here and at MoDaCo. I pulled the battery as a last resort as NOTHING is working, I've tried all the tricks at least 2 dozen times, some a hundred +, including the one you mention
Well I don't want to teach you to suck eggs, but I take it you did use Audi to delete and replace your drivers.
And then when powering on the Vega you held the back button for 2 secs and then the back and power buttons for 6 secs to get the Vega detected?
For me I can only see that there can only be 3 other possible causes
1./ the back button is broken on the vega
2./ The USB port on your PC or on the Vega has gone up the swanee
3./ The USB lead is no good
The Vega may be unbrickable but if the back button or the USB port has had it then .....
Yeah, tried it, cheers.

So I've encountered the soft brick many times and been fine. Well now, after messing with Odin, the phone is off and won't come back on.
I've attempted turning it on with the power, power + vol up/down, plugged in, pulled the battery for a few mins and tried again, etc...
Is this a possible full on brick?
try doing it without pressing the power button
To expand a little on what chikin said
1. remove battery, sim and sd cards
2. plug in usb from phone to pc
3. holding only the volume buttons (up and down), pop the battery back in
This should launch you into dl mode. I remember last week someone was having the same issue, phone would not respong to anything and would not power on, and this method brought him to dl mode where he could use odin to flash to stock. If it doesn't work at first, keep trying, patience and persistence is the key.

Damn, think I am on the same boat and it's slowing sinking. Just got my phone last night too and followed the video on how to flash the AXURA Vibrant edition rom and everything appeared to go smoothly and then after it was done I rebooted my phone and now I can't turn it on and even tried the pulled battery method mentioned here too.
How long does it take after you pop in the battery? A few seconds or a minute before something comes up on screen? Thanks.
Hello guys, first than nothing, sorry for my bad english, isnt my native languaje. I got this problem yesterday in the night of the new year!!!!!!!:crying: I was rooted, using Xylon and Faux Kernel, but the problem appears from nothing!!
The first thing that I detected was, the phone take a WHILE!!! for charge.... then, out of the power, the phone get overheating and discharging so fast, never in life that happends, when N4 got discharged i try to turn on again but download mode appers in the screen, finally I get in the recovery, then I did a wipe cache/system and factory reset. Install again the Xylon... but when phone finally turns off, when I plugged in to AC absolutelly nothing happends, the led just turn in red, and the N4 dont start in FB, dont get charge, dont do a sh*t !!!! I conect it to the PC but also nothing appends, the N4 doesnt appear in my device list.
So... my N4 its broken?
There was possibly something wrong with the kernel and rom combination that caused your phone to overheat. I think eventually the heat may have damaged your hardware. Sorry but, if something was wrong in the first place it was not a good idea to reinstall the same thing that was causing the problem, if I were you I would have flashed a stock ROM. My only advice now would be to RMA it and pray
EDIT: I found this if it helps at all:
If you are unable to access the settings menu of your device, you can still reset your phone by performing a Hard Reset. Here are the instructions:
If your phone is on, power it off.
Press and hold Power until the device powers on, then immediately press and hold Volume Down (while still pressing Power). You will see the word Start with an arrow drawn around it.
Press Volume Down twice to designate Recovery mode.
Press Power to restart into Recovery mode. You will see an image of an Android robot with a red exclamation mark.
While holding down Power, press Volume Up.
Use the volume keys to scroll to "wipe data/factory reset" and press Power to select it.
Scroll down to "Yes - erase all user data" and press Power to select it.
Note: If at any point during the above steps your phone becomes unresponsive, you can restart it by holding down the power button for several seconds.
Before you try anything else, try and leaving it plugged in for a while and then try turning it on. Or leave it plugged in to a computer then try turning it on.

Try this. I haven't had it happen to me, but I do have a friend who this exact same thing happened and he thought it was bricked. He left it plugged into AC over night, and in the morning it would turn back on.
First than nothing, thanks for reply, I appreciate your intentions to help me.
I will leave it charging all the night and while Im working too... I hope after that, the phone at least turn on.

I bought it the 13/nov..
I received it 29/nov.
I ALWAYS use stock charger, only 1 time i try to charge it in my car, but it was less thant 5 minutes, I decided dont charge with the car because the energy variates when I accelerate...
After that, I use my phone quiet normal.
I had this problem with my nexus 7. I think my battery died all the way and it couldn't charge. The stick charger wasn't doing anything. But I plugged it into my computer for a few minutes and tried turning it on. Then when the loading screen appeared I ran it to it's stock charger and charged it to full. Your battery probably died. Try different combinations of ways to get it to take a charge. Just long enough to turn on then plug it into its charger. Though the overheating could have fried it

my att g2 4.2 rooted stock rom worked normally last night, this morning I plugged it into the car charger and it displayed it was charging with 2% charge present. I pressed the power button the boot animation began I set it down and when I picked it back up a few minutes later to use it...well nothing...the charging indicator led wasn't lit and when I pressed the power button LG appeared for only a split second then went black. when I plug it in same thing, LG logo for a brief second then disappears. I haven't done anything recently except xposed modules, no flashing of anything. any ideas? thank you guys
It happened to me (on other devices) when I let them discharged too far. Just allow it to charge awhile then try to hold the power button
for 10-20secs ... The NookHD+ were the worst in this situation (it won't charge sometimes, I had to plug/unplug a few times to initiate a charge, I was almost about to RMA one of them).

try charging the device in offline mode ( turn it off and let it charrge for a while) and then turn it on . mind wouldnt turn on because of very low charge yesterday. doing this helped
update
I let it charge for several hours, nothing...it appears to be in some kind of boot loop. I can't turn it off all the way, I hold the powwer button for tensec or so and the LG will appear for a second then disapear and then the back light stays on. oh ya, when I plugged it in a few hours ago it wouldn't turn on but the red LED was flashing. I'm not sure how long it stayed on, but it was off when i got back to it several hours later. thank you for your time fellas!
If you can get to recovery at all, leaving it on charge in there. Has saved me in a similar situation.

it sounds like you had the same thing as everyone else yesterday that had twrp installed and the carrier automatically updated the system.
I could not get my phone recognized by the laptop and had to use pdanet drivers, which finally worked, but I still had to dig for the device. then had to flash back to stock. There is a pretty good thread on this topic, already. Search for it in the developer section. Do not skip any steps, such as setting the date back to jan2012 and turning off the internet. go slow and methodically, or you will miss a step and get frustrated.

And I guess the drives don't mount successfully. Well, disconnecting the battery should certainly turn it off. If reconnecting makes it start spontaneously (should not), you could prepare a Nook Manager sdcard and insert it before reconnecting the battery. But this sort of sounds like the ability to boot is lost. Hmmm. I'll have to think about it.
unfortunately disconnecting the battery does not appear to do anything... screen continues to show that 'Installing... " screen. Hoping to get this thing figured out with someone's help

E-ink screens stay the same unless there is a new powered input so it could simply be off, having run the battery down completely during an update (maybe Wi-Fi was left on? That would run down the battery for sure). So if all of this happened during an OTA update, it could be really messed up
When my NST is off, plugging in the power pack turns it on. Initially the LED is green and then changes to orange as charging begins. I'm assuming nothing happens when you do the same. If the OS is scrambled from losing power during an update it may not be able to boot. You didn't say how you rooted. If you used Nook Manager you could try putting in that card and then connecting to the power pack, hoping for a boot from the SD card. If you got that far you could try a factory reset.
My power button is sometimes really cranky and a few times I've run through my entire stock of words that do not come from children's books trying to get the device to turn on. So you might try, but if it's really off the power pack should turn it on.

Power pack = charger.
So if the Nook is actually off, attaching the charger with the NM card inserted should make it boot. Did you try the procedure in the link above?
Just tried the procedure of unplugging the battery, holding the white power button for 30 secs, then connecting battery and connecting to charger. There is a split second orange light and then green the first time i plug it in....subsequent plugging results in always green....the issue with the frozen screen on "Installing" remains. Tried the holding x 20 secs method to promt a restart....nothing.... what else can I do?

If the battery is actually "dead" (not impossible on these old devices), the NST will not start, even if plugged in. Do you have a voltmeter of some sort to check the battery? If it's actually charged, it should show a solid voltage. If not, that may be the issue. If the battery is actually charged then there's a pretty serious issue that can't be fixed without access to the OS by ADB, or the ability to boot from the SD card. Beyond my "pay grade", at any rate, I'm sorry to say. There are batteries available online but the price may not make sense.
I don't think it's a battery issue. I had another NST with a good battery but a bad screen (lines all across screen) . I fully charged it using the bad screen reader and used the battery from it for the frozen nook... no luck.. oh well... I guess this is a paperweight now... thanks for your help everyone.

Did you take the phone in for service? What did they do to fix it, if they fixed it... I have a dead phone and need some answers if they are out there. I'm looking through every post that has anything to do with this subject and coming up blank - just like my phone's screen!
Part of my issue is that I had a shut down from out of nowhere on NYE. I was able to bring it back up with the power, volume up, and Bixby combo the next day. Foolishly I assumed it was a fluke and went right back to using my phone just as I had before. I saw an article about disabling the Bixby button, which seemed to be the thing to do... When the phone shut down the next day again, I couldn't bring it back because I no longer have a Bixby button for the combo. It's been down since Jan. 2, and I'm at my wit's end. Can you please update your phone status? I'd appreciate it if you can!

Lol disabling the bixby button in software does not mean you can't trigger download mode. That level of software has no idea what packages you disabled ?
Did you have Substratum themes applied before updating?

Happened with me last night, bunch of updates and then black. I was gonna send to warranty, then someone told me Power + Bixby + Vl down and it worked. How can I find out what did it
When I called Samsung, they were clueless how to get it started again as we walked through all the button combinations they had. It was fully charged when it stopped working, both times. The second time it took me a few days of trying on my own, calling, Samsung and then going into their repair store.
They took it back to work on it after I explained what was going on. He tried several things and came out and told me it may need a replacement but wanted to try one more thing. Hours later, he came back and said he hooked it up to a charger and it had been dead. Once it started charging, it showed the green battery, lightning bolt and blinking circle. It still didn't start normally, but the three button combo worked at around 20%. I'm not sure if he tried before that, but it came back on.
I've discovered that my handset is extremely sensitive to cold temperatures and shuts down. I'm in the Midwest and have been working outside in a tent like structure. I listen to music, books, or podcasts while I'm working. Many times, I will put my phone on a shelf while charging but still listening. The phone shuts off and first I have to wait for it to warm up, then it has to drain the fully charged battery, and then I start charging it again. After the first time on my own, I did the button combo right after it started taking a charge and it worked.
I'm not sure if a replacement phone is the way to go, because if this is common on the S8, I might end up with another dud that would just frustrate me more. I like the phone, but this quirk is annoying.
Last night my phone was charging and accessible fine. This morning I have a green light at the top showing I assume that it's charged but the screen is totaly black. nothing I do brings up any screen. I tried all the button combos I tried plugging it in to the charger and nothing shows any kind of reaction. I tried plugging it into my computer and the computer said it was setting up device QUSB_BULK. Then said it was set up but even after it supposedly complete I could not find the device. What the hell?
S8 Black Screen
Is the green light staying on? This happened to me on one of the many shut down times I experienced. I think I narrowed it down to my phone not liking cold temperatures, but I don't know if that is your phone's issue. It hasn't happened since last winter, so I haven't needed to do any of this for quite some time, but I'm trying to remember all of the steps I took.
I'm gonna suggest getting the battery drained back down to zero. In order to drain the battery when it's black screened, I kept trying all the button combos repeatedly for, it seems like, maybe three or more days... I couldn't tell if it was dead on several of the occasions, but when I had an indication light, it went off after days of doing any and all button combos, just to drain what battery I could.
Once you do that, while keeping it out of any extreme temps, (if there have been any) then plug in the adapter that came with it, using a good quality USB-C cord and charge it again and see if the charging screen comes up. (The Fast Adapter Charger that connects with USB 3.o is the best to use. Samsung wanted me to use the original cord, but I have no idea where that is! I just used a good quality cord.)
If that doesn't do the trick, then it's not the same issue I had, and I wish you luck on finding out and getting it fixed! Don't forget to update the site for others to find out if your tricks work... (You can still try this, but it may be just to rule it out as a possibility.) Try draining it more than you first did, and then plug it in again to see if it takes a change.
If it is taking a charge again after draining and plugging in your power cord, wait until you get back up to at least 20% and then try the three button start (Bixby / Power / Volume Up at the same time) and make sure you hold them for up to 30 seconds or until it kicks on. One time, I think I held it for almost a full minute. But it did take the change, restarted on the three button combo restart, and didn't have any new issues from its down time.
If this works for you, come back and tell us! If not, come back and report what you try and what the results are.
I really hope that helps! Good luck!

S8 with OtterBox case (and screen protector back in the box. It just interfered with my phone's touch screen responsiveness.)

Sounds like a system problem, you can try to use the button to force a reboot, if there is no response, you can try to reinstall the system, if this still can not be solved, then you may need to replace the new screen, you can go to Witrigs to see Note 8 screen, they There is an original Note 8 Super AMoled screen for sale. The price is also relatively low.
