I see many people asking this question about how to use amazon os e-reader and ur android side of kindle fire. Saw many people making this way more difficult then it has to be.
Install this app
https://market.android.com/details?...SwyLDEsInltc3QuYW5kcm9pZC5ob21lc3dpdGNoZXIiXQ..
Install that app on ur kindle fire os or android side and just press it when u want to switch sides that easy.
U can use the real kindle ereader not the crappy app..and ur android side all in one touch
Dual booting is where you have the ability to switch OS's like having CM7 and the stock Kindle ROM and being able to boot into one or the other.
What you are showing is a launcher switcher which is not the same thing.

Anyone have a solution to the Kindle Reader app not bringing up a book list if you change the launcher?
Currently I have to go to the stock KF Launcher and pick books/newsstand to selection a new book/magazine to read. Anyone have a hack or setting to change this?
I have the same problem, and would be very interested in hearing an answer!
This is a known issue and there is as of yet no workaround. What I have done and what most people have done is to set a short cut on the desktop for the Kindle Launcher. Then you can select your books/newstand etc. Not the most ideal but it is what we have until Amazon releases a fix or some crafy dev comes up with a better fix in a custom ROM.

Thanks Eric!
Just found a workaround. Searched kindle in the market and updated the app. This installed the version that would usually be used on an android device and shows your whole library.
edit: Just a warning, there seems to be no way to make this kindle app full screen. It has the navigation bar (albeit the minimized one) and I'm pretty sure it used to go full screen in the stock kindle app. Also this new kindle app wont work from the stock launcher. I'm thinking about switching back for these two reasons (mostly the full screen thing is bothering me), anyone know how to revert back?
edit2: Also the slider that allows you to quickly jump between locations in the book is covered up by the navigation bar.. Very annoying. Wouldn't recommend doing this unless you don't need that. You can still manually "go to" a section of the book but I'd rather have the slider. Just did a factory restore to get the original kindle app back.
I have a few questions and they are probably answered here but I'm at work so its very hard tor me to get on my phone.
- is their a way to get android market on a KF even if its not rooted? I really would just like to install apps that are not in the amazon market. A new launcher, etc. Do you have to be rooted to install apps from android?
- What is side loading apps? I keep hearing people talk about this? What is it for?
- is there a way to text people from my KF? If so can anyone tell me a good app?
- how can I change the amazon keyboard to say swiftkey or something?
- any way to play movies on the KF? Could I drop a mkv, avi, divx, etc. movie from my pc onto my kindle? Or could I stream it to my kindle somehow?
- last question to now...is there a way to improve the touch screen response? I have to repeatedly touch icons, links and whatnot. I thought I saw an app that improves the KF screen?
Thanks everyone for the help, its greatly appreciated.

1) No. Market needs root to install. Some other launchers work without root, but you now have to side load them. You can add other non-Amazon apps in many cases, but without root, you can't use the Android Market, so you would need to side load them.
2) Copying the APK install files via download or via usb or other means.
3) The Kindle Fire is not a phone, there is no radio in the device so no text messaging. You can use things like Google Talk but you need root to install it. There are some web based txt stuff, but that is not really on the device.
4) Need root to do this
5) There are other video players that will do this. Like MX Video player
6) Not really.
6 In particular is starting to get on my nerves. I think its an OS/Kernel issue because tapping stuff elsewhere seems to be ok, but that bar is a headache. Hit back 5x and you see it light up each time.
Also I dont know if its dolphin browser or what but a lot of the times I tap a typing area like google search, after 2-3 letters it just hides the keyboard.
Also I've been having more issues where you click a typable area and start typing, but nothing shows. Keyboard is showing recommended words, but none will actually show on the screen.
Oh, also if you're watching a video on a site, good luck moving the time bar. Sometimes I have to press and hold my finger 2-3 seconds for it to trigger.
Seems to be a little worse since 6.2 imo.
Once the kindle is rooted and the entire market is installed does the kindle act like an android phone? Do you get the android home screen? With cm7 does your tablet act just like phone obviously without gos and so on.

The market is just an app that you use to get more apps.
It will still look and feel like an out of the box kindle fire.
And last I recall the market wont show up in the standard kindle launcher, so no one would even know it was there.
You have to take additional steps to even utilize it.
CM7 would make it act like an android device. there are tablets with CM7 so it has nothing to do with phones. Gos I assume is gps, and some tablets have that so it isnt phone only.
Hi,
Please refer to the article below. It will give you a deeper understanding of what rooting is and some tweaks you can do to the unit.

If you have google voice linked with your Sprint number, you can send and receive texts via Google Voice
I have the Market installed but for some reason there are tons of apps missing for the market. Is their way to fix this?
Apps like Yahoo Fantasy Football to Google Maps or Google Earth are not there.

I think you can send/receive a limited number of text messages as well as make /receive calls with a free Google Voice account. I have not tested this with the Kindle Fire, so someone else may correct me.
There is an app called TouchScreen Booster that may help you adjust your screen sensitivity.
the following is from an other thread i don't remember (thanks to them !)
additional settings in build.prop:
# Rendering User Interface With GPU
debug.sf.hw=1
# Increase overall touch responsiveness
video.accelerate.hw=1
windowsmgr_max_events_per_sec=150
debug.performance.tuning=1
MAKE BACKUP COPY !!! - CAUTION WITH MODIFYING BUILD.PROP !!!
if your not sure - leave it !
i made this settings and i'm satisfied ...
Go to Kindle Fire browser Google search for "applanet". Under the link will be on the left "familiar interface" I tried that one first and it didn't work. On the right of it is one called "Version". I clicked that one and it directly started downloading an app. Tap the upper left part of the screen where the notifications are and when it is done downloading tap on its notification. It will install. (prior to this you need to go to settings - device and turn on download from unknown sources) install it and it creates an app called Applanet Market. Go to the Amazon market and search for ADW ex. Download that. You may find apps on Applanet that are not in Amazons.Search for any application you want. Like youtube, earth, gmail, whatever. When you're done playing with applanet hit your home key. It will give you a choice of ADW or stock. Check off the default box and choose ADW. Go to menu at bottom and go to ADW settings. Advanced. Set columns to 6 and rows to 6 and return back. At the bottom middle you have the ADW 3 button controller. I opened the app drawer (middle button) and dragged the Kindle Fire launcher to home screen and then long pressed it and dragged it over the area left of the appdrawer button. It will stick here and with it you can get to the stock KF home screen. But whenever you tap home, you will go to ADW. If you ever want to change that, go to settings. Applications. ADW. And at the lower area you can choose to release the default.

In response to this and OP's earlier question, MX is good. Moboplayer is good too, but I've been having full screen problems with Mobo. On streaming, you can use Dropbox or Sugarsync (I use SS, there is a thread on it in the apps category). For streaming though, I've found that MX doesn't work great and Mobo is better, which is why I use that for streaming, although I still have the full screen issues. If you stream using SS, just make sure that file is encoded in a quality to get a good stream. There is also another thread on how to setup files to do this in apps category as well.

Is applanet back up?

Hi,
So looked over the various posts and used the search. My question is really around the performance benefits of install a custom ROM vs the current Amazon ROM.
I read a fair amount of PDF's/magazines via edPDF, and i hate the lag when going from page to page, does a custom ROM help with that? The only other thing i used the kindle for are my book, which i see i can just download the default kindle reader and videos.
So given the above any help? If the performance is better which ROM should i go for?
thx

The Kindle Fire comes with a modified version of android 2.3 (gingerbread). Basically, as you can see, the launcher is different, there is an amazon app market instead of the android play store, and many of the stock google apps that come with an android powered device have been removed and either replaced with amazons desired equivalent or simply left out. The kindle has a specific build in video browser that is linked into their video streaming service that you will not be able to get with a custom rom to the best of my knowledge. The same goes with the kindle reader. There is a kindle reader on the android play store but it is not the same as you will get with a stock rom. Custom roms basically undo the changes amazon made to the gingerbread os and unlock the restrictions those changes created (i.e. more apps on the android play store, google stock apps, more flexibility in software customization...). If you want to continue reading magazines and PDF's I would suggest you stick with the stock rom simply because it's built to do that. If you want more freedom with what your kindle can do and would like to use it as a fully functioning tablet and not just an e reader with a few perks then you should go with a custom rom. Currently the developers are hard at work perfecting Android 4.0 by building a functioning 3.0 kernel (the current kernel they have implemented with their custom roms does not allow for hardware accelerated graphics such as advanced games or video streaming apps like netflix or hulu). The previous generation rom equivalent to a custom version of android gingerbread, referred to as CM7 (cyanogenmod 7) does support hardware accelerated graphics and functions fully with the exception of one draw back. Android 2.3 was built with the idea of physical buttons being present on the devices it powered such as you would find on a phone with the standard menu, home, back and search buttons. Where the kindle fire only has one physical button all builds of CM7 for the Kindle Fire have a custom row of touch buttons at the bottom of the screen that take up a little but still annoying amount of space. This is in my opinion the only drawback to the custom roms running gingerbread for the kindle fire and is fixed in the ICS rom as android 4.0 is built with touch screen buttons in mind and minimal use of physical buttons. I hope this helped, let me know if you need any more help.
Thank you for taking time to send such a detailed reply. think I might wait for Android 4.
The only thing with the fire that gets me is the time it takes to go from page to page on magazines...

Don't about Zmooth or Button Savior to replace the CM7 soft buttons. I really prefer Zmooth since it's quicker and never in the wrong spot at the wrong time.

I guess i'm not familiar with that, I never really used CM7, I flashed it and then almost instantly upgraded to CM9 because I liked the fact that it was being updated so frequently.

Once they have HWA working I'll be switching to CM9.
Hello,
I have been researching lately about e-readers and such.
I started off with Amazon Kindle and found very interesting the K Touch.
Then I found out about Nook and its Nook Touch (I would be interested in the one with GlowLight, quite cool).
I know that both Kindle and Nook have some sort of root/jailbreak.
I also know that Kindle has a very young jailbreak and it doesn't seem to have a very big community (yet).
I would like to know which one, in your opinion, has the best features available once rooted/jbroken.
And, concerning the Nook, know what kind of extra features I would get rooting the Nook.
I read somewhere that Nook has an expansion slot which allows to boot other OS from an SD: very interesting.
But what about apps? games? music player?
[This thread is very likely to make choose one device over the other]
Thanks in advance.

Hiya,
I have some old Android tablets lying around, two of which are Kindle Fires. I'd like to figure out some use for them.
One thought is making one connected all the time to a to-do list app (like Google Keep) and have that mounted on a wall. I'm curious if anyone has any suggestions and getting an extremely barebones ROM on a Kindle Fire, but with the ability to login to Google and use up-to-date apps like Google Keep. Preferably it would be "pinned" that that app all the time. Wondering if there is a ROM that eliminates the launcher entirely and just goes to a single app (but with the ability to do full authentication with a Google account)
Thanks for any help!
This probably could be done - like you say, we'd need to have a non-stock rom that could utilize the tablet features of the kindle instead of the reader features.
I like the idea a lot!
I'll see what I can dig up, since I also have this tablet and would like to do that as well.
