samsung phone repair - not completely happy. - Galaxy S II General

Hey guys,
I had to send in my phone for repair, USB slot completely messed up, phone wouldn't shut down, it said it was charging when nothing was plugged in, PC wouldn't recognise etc
OK, here's why im not happy:
My unlocked XEU SGS2 has been returned with:
1. Locked (to a network I don't use or never have - T.MOBILE)
2. It has a product code I've never had, certainly not XEU
3. Boot screen animation for T-mobile
4. Auto Brightness is VERY low (I've only ever used auto, and this one is wayyyy too low on auto)
I've flashed UK XEU 2.3.4 which I know is the latest for my region, this has removed the boot screen animation. (Browser still has loads of T-Mobile bookmarks though which is strange, after flashing an unbranded firmware)
I phoned my network (orange) for an unlock code, as this phone was factory unlocked on purchase & told them its been in for repair & is now locked. (They said I should receive it via email in 3-4 days aagghhhh)
As for auto brightness issue, I'm lost. I flashed the speedmod kernel to see if it was stock T-Mobile kernel that was messed up, and auto brightness is the same. very very low indeed.
As for changing product code back to xeu, I thought my unbranded firmware would allow me to do this, but even with the *#272 IMEI code, I still only received the one option which is something like TPU or something. (I forget)
im happy they have fixed my phone, but sending it back locked when it is a factory unlocked model, with a different product code is annoying me.
Some advice please.

Hi,
My phone is also under repair and they've lent me another i9100, which is...different.
The auto-brightness is also much lower, but the display is better overall (no banding at all, out of the box).
On the other hand the GPS isn't half as good and takes much longer to get a fix.
In other words, get me MY i9100 back (fist batch, I guess, since I got it the day it came out).

Hate to be stating the obvious, but are you sure they returned the same phone?

I would call them up and get ahold of someone that can help you. That's not acceptable in any way. I would demand a replacment. Being as how by there actions they have forced you to void your warranty if you choose to reunlock it and change roms. I would advise being nice to the people who help you out. It's safe to say its probably not there fault. Depending on how many lines you have, a solid threat of termination of contract could start to swerve them towards making it right.
I would seriously see what they can go though, be it new phone or a bill credit or early upgrade.

First thing I checked was my IMEI & it matches.
But I still think its a new phone, even my screen protector was removed and there's no need for them to do that, a screen cannot be opened up.
Hopefully the unlock code orange will send will fix it, & I'm sure I will still be able to change the product code back to XEU, but as for the auto brightness, I'm not sure if its fixable.

There are more than one "batch" of screens, if you use voodoo screen tuning r&d from the market you can see which one you have, as they each seem to have a different brightness curve and Gama leveles.
Its possible your new screen is different to your old one.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk

I've read somewhere that newer S2 batches have lower overall brightness than earlier ones, so it's possible that the auto-brightness setting wasn't calibrated accordingly. Someone in here posted a way to modify the auto brightness values, can't find that topic though.

ok,
phone is now fully debranded, no t-mobile boot screen, no t-mobile bookmarks & now on XEU UK product code.
My only problem now, is the very low auto brightness (although, at first glance it now looks better now its been fully debranded, will look into it, hopefully its now sorted) and the fact they have sent back a network-locked phone to replace the factory unlocked model i sent in.
Orange BTW want £20 to unlock my phone, i told em to stuff it as i had a factory unlocked model a fortnight ago, i now await samsungs reply.

If you are rooted, you can possibly unlock for free
I got my code out of the phone using the method posted in the dev forum that I assisted odia with testing

LOL pulser, that post doesnt even make sense to me.
hash codes and hex editors lol. EH?
LMAO
I tried Chainfires unlock app, it didn't find an unlock code.

My phone is being fixed now for the exact same issue, they told me if its a hardware issue then it would be replaced. Hope they don't give me a refurbished one. Also I hope they don't notice the custom kernel counter in download mode, because the USB jig didn't work due to the stuffed USB connection. Thanks to mobile Odin I was able to flash back to stock though. Thank you Chainfire.
Edit: To OP, I hope that isn't your knee in your avatar.

That app failed for me too but galaxy_s unlock by helroz on the market worked for me. Give it a shot

Its a hardware issue yeah, I think they have replaced all the guts in mine, I think only my back cover & button are the same (only things left with protectors on)
I wouldn't worry about the custom count, mine was on zero but mine had villainrom (including Vr boot screen) and ninphetamine kernel installed, they still fixed it. (Sort of ... it is locked to a network I can't use lol)
Good job they did, as I wasn't aware of a mobile Odin, and there was nothing I could do with the USB slot knackered.
And yes, that 'was' my knee.

Nice injury, and I thought my xray was bad.

galaxy_s unlock by helroz,
I'd heard some bad things about this app.... but sod it, I tried it.
IT WORKED!!
it didn't give me a code, it just rebooted my phone - but my orange sim is now working, and my IMEI is safe and correct.
So...
I'm now on latest UK unbranded firmware, with XEU product code, no T-Mobile boot screen or branding at all, & its now unlocked.
Perfect!

Rogers Firmware

So before you people go flaming at me for not reading the forums, I have been trying to make sense of it since yesterday but this forum is very cluttered and there are no simple direct straight to the point answers. If i missed something, Sorry.
Ok i bought a x10 off a dude who bought it directly from Rogers 3 months ago. From what i have learned, Rogers x10's should have some sort of ra...14 rom i believe, but mine has r1fb001 which i learned is the Brazilian rom i believe. So do rogers x10's ship with tht build number or has this been modified? If it has been, is it beneficial to have this or change it back to the build number that other Rogers phones are possibly using? Also will the new update be released for the rom i have now or is it specificially for the north american builds?
Thanks for taking the time to reply to me and educating me.
The guy you bought it from seems to have flashed that ROM on to there. It certainly didn't come from Robbers. I don't think the benefits between having that ROM on your phone and 014 are too great. You should be fine with either. If you want to get the Rogers branded firmware back on there you will probably have to flash it to the unencrypted 014 ROM and then run a repair using PC Companion.
Rogers hasn't released any updates for the X10 yet, so you'll really see no benefits in flashing the Rogers firmware on there at the moment.
oh awesome thanks for the quick reply. So what is all the fuss that people are making about then about the update that was recently released? Is it going to slowly come to the whole world or just for the asian and european countries?
The newly released firmware for Rogers (.20) improves performance and battery life. Also improves media/timescape and adds a backup/restore app. Good update.

update became available today via the Sony Ericsson Update Service.... just run the application on your PC, follow instructions regarding connecting your phone via usb, etc. and rock on!
new firmware kicks ass! won't bother rooting now until there is a froyo rom. im happy
How is the auto brightness working for you folks? For me it always sets it to the lowest setting possible i am inside. I do have a mirrored screen protector, is tht probably why? Its pretty dark hard to see when the screen goes so low.

Yea I thought mine wasn't working properly. Then I put the phone right upto my monitor (to mimick bright light) then pulled it away after a few seconds, and it slowly started dimming.
Auto brightness works by dimming the screen when it's darker, and brightening the screen when it's brighter outside.

yeah i do realize that, but dont you think the x10 takes it to a different level in terms of how it reacts to low light? Where it goes down so low ur eyes hurt trying to see the screen. I come the world of the palm pre where the screen is awesome just the x10 but on a smaller scale but the sensor was much smarter. It let you set the minimum for the light sensor to go.

ok i have downloaded the file from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=683793 that says "WWE_R1FA014" and copied the contents into the flash tool i downloaded too. Then replaced the contents of the flash folder with the ones from the "WWE_R1FA014" files. then i followed the instruction in the "how to" list in the flash folder. I replaced the text in the "Device ID" as instructed and ran the flash tool. Then when the phone restarts it shows up as the same firmware. Then i run the PC companion and do the repair and still have the same r1fb001 build number on it.
So what am i doing wrong here?
Thanks

try doing it by repairs using pc companion, that's what i did and it put me on the new firmware, might lose your apps and stuff though
I still say root it you can remove soo much garbage from the phone, and besides you'll get updates quicker.
Rooted X10a
Well i just rooted my X10a, so i got the B2FA020, should i go back to my carriers update???
i got the same problems, i cannot sent MMS with the rooted phone, it just looks like I am missing an app because i enter the Apns, but i don't know where to find it, so if someone can help us out with this issue we will be very grateful.
Also timescape is missging the facebook and tweeter plug-ins :-S
You guys are my best shot
Just follow the guide here http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=195467
Best to download the x10a generic AR R1FA014 then follow the guide. Then update once more to get the latest R2BA020.
If you still want the Rogers one you will need to download the original Rogers firmware
issues
Well. im going to try it, altho this might result on me losing my root access right?
Everything works perfectly just the fact that i cannot send/recive MMS, like it doesn't even give me the options to attach a file, if i could fix that without flashing my x10 would be pretty nice...

Samsung Purposefully built in the download/recovery modes?

Did Samsung purposefully build in the recovery mode and download modes for us to be able to root and stuff?
Or were they for like Samsung's use only, and not all personal uses?
I don't know, but you have to appreciate the way Samsung doesn't lock their phones to the extent other manufacturers do.

I mean they did start getting hardware locked vibrants out there later during the year and then on 2.2 they tried to make a barrier for us to not do the recovery reisntall packages because it checked the signature and other stuff... so.. they did TRY later on to stop us... but i'm asking if the modes were built for them to use, and if it was only for them, how can they be so stupid to make it so easy to get in because i'm sure some dev just looked at the system files and saw the download mode etc and adb'd it in there.
I'm sure it was initially meant for Samsung use only. If they didn't care about us rooting our phones it wouldn't void the warranty. At least they don't use encrypted boot loader's like Motorola has started to do. They make it pretty much impossible to flash a custom ROM.

IIRC, in the case of the hardware locked vibrants, Samsung did admit that it was a manufacturer's fault there. All that got fixed by the JI6 update (if you didn't flash the fix beforehand).

After I rooted and did an update a while back, I got some boot loops. Took it back to T-mobile and the rep asked me if I had rooted. He didn't mention anything about warranty and replaced it since I was under 30 days. Not sure if they don't care about root or if he was being nice.

probably because you were on your 30 day thing, if you tell them you rooted, then their going to "black mark" you on your tmo acc so you don't get any more refurb. phones.
Now if they only release driver source..

Looking for anyone in the Toronto area that could help me with my atrix $$

I've been having a lot of problems with my atrix. Currently it's just a paper weight, and I'm using my blackberry that I absolutely hate.
Basically, my phone will power on, but the modem will not power up. I have tried countless things that I've seen on these message boards, and nothing has worked.
I am able to boot into Android, but the only will reboot after 2 or 3 minutes of playing around.
I'm starting to get pretty frustrated, and I'm willing to pay someone that will be able to get my phone back to a working state.
This is time sensitive as I'm leaving for a European vacation on Tuesday, and I would like to be able to use my Atrix as I travel.
Someone, please help!
When you say the modem will not power up do you mean you have no data or wifi?
Need more info about your phone like build number, baseband, etc.
All the pertinent info can be found at Settings > About Phone.
I'm studying at uoft right now, but id need more info before I committed to anything.
Is your phone completely stock? (if yes don't answer questions you dont need to)
Is it Bell?
Is your bootloader unlocked?
Is your phone rooted?
Did you try to do anything to your phone that caused it to start working improperly?
Have you thought about turning in your phone or sending it in (since it should be under warranty)?
Basically, my phone won't boot up. When I power it on, the phone shows the motorola logo "Dual Core Technololgy." Then after about a minute, it will say "Modem did not power up (3) Starting RSD protocol support" I can't even get into the phone to use it.
I bought the phone unlocked about 2 weeks ago. It was working perfectly fine, had no issues, then all of the sudden the phone just started rebooting, and sometimes saying "Modem did not power up" But i would just take the battery out, and then it would boot up perfectly fine. But 2 days ago, removing the battery no longer worked.
I checked the warranty on Motorola's site, and the phone is under warranty. The only reason I dont want to send it off right now is because I'm leaving for Europe next week, and I want to be able to use it over there.
Also, when the phone constantly started to reboot, I wasnt try to flash anything, or mess around with ROM's or anything.

Have I just hard bricked my note? Read first post please

My note is dead, no joke...its not turning on at all now. I flashed my rom as its the first rom I ever created...it didn't work as it came up with an error, then I flashed Criskelo 5.0 rom and it flashed...no problems. So then, I thought i'd try flashing my rom again and it failed then...then I tried flashing Criskelo 5.0 rom again and it came up with an error and it said (bad) in brackets, then I tried flashing another rom called ParanoidAndroid and it was on the 3rd line for 5 minutes and then screen just went black after that and my phone never woke up again.
When I put the battery into my note, there is no life at all, I get a constant back screen, however...the phone gets warm with battery inserted. I've took out battery and put it back in with same problem. I've tried PC odin but the cable connection does not show a yellow or green light on the PC odin software.
Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Yep, sorry but the phone is bricked. Had the same problem with my S2 a couple of weeks ago. Have had plenty of experience flashing firmwares but this time half way through the phones screen went black, & phone would not restart. Tried everything, usb jig etc., but no luck. Phone would get hot with battery inserted.
Sent the phone to the link below, simply telling them that the firmware installation had stopped half way through. They could not repair it themselves & had to return it to Samsung, this took about seven days. Now have the phone back working perfectly, all I had to pay was the return postage.

Yes, it will be covered by Samsung warranty, just send it to the company in the link, they will send it on to Samsung.
Carphone warehouse should honour your warranty... If their at all problematic, try with your operator. Either Carphone warehouse will take it at a store, or your provider will do a next day collection, and usually replace there and then.

Unbrick Verizon Note 7 (No matter How Bad)

Hey guys,
I created an account here just to share this fix with you all.
To start, Tuesday morning, I decided to update the note 7 (to the firmware that changes battery color if your device is safe). After finding that my battery is still white, I contacted my Verizon Rep and ordered a replacement. Since the phone should have arrived the very next day (corporate account) I decided to flash my phone using the root methods in this forum... BIG mistake. If anyone can confirm that after updating the note, root is successful, then please share. But in the end what I was left with was a note 7 that wouldn't even accept the verizon firmware flashed through Odin. Smartswitch didn't work either (wouldn't accept my serial) so i was pretty much SOL and out of a phone... Until today.
After one last attempt to fix this as I wait for my replacement to arrive, I was searching on the verizon forums and found an old post from the galaxy s5 on their forum. I downloaded the repair assistant from here * verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-80201/#windows * and put my phone in download mode. After connecting it and selecting REPAIR in the verizon software, the program downloaded the latest firmware and brought my phone right back to factory settings working as good as new. This was the only method that I found to work after several days of frustration.
I hope this helps someone out there. Thank you for reading!

Correct. The software goes to Verizons servers and downloads the latest firmware. So the annoying "power down now!" pop ups still show when the device is plugged in but it will be replaced soon anyway At least I have a functional phone in case of an emergency until the replacement arrives.
dude you save my life..same exact thing happen to me,but I had already updated my new note with the green battery and when I tried to flash the sprint firmware it failed and brick my phone..i decided to do the update cause people where saying that it did work with the new phone. but i guess i should of waited and not apply the new update.oh well
Glad to hear I helped somebody! Maybe I'll learn to live without root for a little while lol. The phone is still awesome

yeah i know. thanks a lot. maybe someone comes out with a new root method with the latest update. and only reason i update it was because i saw someone saying it was ok. but i guess that person never applied the update before he rooted

Okay, this worked for me, so I'm paying it forward because you guys have been tremendously amazing!!
SO, like many people with the PHE Verizon Note 7 , I received the 60% update and unknowingly installed it. Was very unhappy and tried to root my device not knowing that it would semi-brick it. Used the verizon software assistant to repair it and it erased and restored my device back to the point where it prompted me to install the update again. Downloaded package disabler pro apk version 6.3 and turned off auto update in the play store. MANUALLY entered in two file names which I will post below this and.. VOILA!!!! NO MORE UPDATE MESSAGE... EVER!!! This works only for VZW Note 7 as far as I know.
I disabled these two: com.samsung.sdm and com.sec.android.soagent since we are talking about Verizon here. They do vary by carrier.
First one gets rid of the message icon in the notification bar. Second one I guess stops it from coming back. Hope this helps someone!!
THANK YOU!!
You saved me from having to downgrade to an inferior phone. THANK YOU!!!
My wife (whose Note 7 was not rooted) accidentally did the upgrade from PH1 to PHE. Do you supposed we could plug her phone in and use this software to get it to revert back to the stock PH1 firmware? I'm trying to figure out how we can get her phone back to stock, if at all possible.

No. Not possible.
She is stuck on STOCK PHE.. block updates so she doesnt get bumped to the next STOCK upgrade at 60% battery
Hmmm. She now has the update where she's limited to 60% battery. Can't she do like Tmunroe1 above, try and root and use the Verizon software to revert it back? Seems like that would replicate exactly what he did, and ultimately end up back at stock like we want, yeah?
EDIT: Let me clarify. She does not care about root. She just wants her 100% battery back, so I'm interested in knowing if we can plug her phone in and utilize the Verizon Repair Assistant to revert it back to PHE w/ 100% battery.
Possibly

That worked for me. Yeah, I attempted root and bricked it unknowingly (I've rooted phones before but didn't adequately research the versions that wouldn't work. I was rooting for the express purpose of blocking the 60% limitation). But when the Verizon/Samsung repair software went in, it put me back to the version prior to the 60% update. I'm now able to charge to 100% and have blocked further updates using methods described above. Unfortunately, we likely don't have any way of knowing what version the repair tool will put on the phone, as they may or may not have remembered to update it by now. The version the recovery software put on my phone is N930VVRS2APHE. I hope this helps.
