Bricked your phone? UK based JTag - Galaxy S II General

Bricked SGS2 Ressurection in the UK
Hi All,
Boxing day 2011 I bricked my SGS 2, yes a FULL brick as in it did nothing, it was my fault as I was tired and flashed the wrong bootloaders after trying ICS.
After the initial tears and frustration of feeling helpless I hunted around the internet for someone in the UK that did JTag restores.
I came across http://fonefunshop.co.uk and as luck would have it they had a team member online using their instant MSN chat, so I jumped on and spoke to Mark who reassured me it sounded very repairable.
The bad news was they were shut for holidays until 3rd January 2012, but none the less I felt better. I boxed the phone up after paying via Paypal and posted on Friday 30th which got it there for the 3rd.
By 1pm on the 3rd I had an email stating the phone was with them and it was waiting workbench space, I checked again a few hours later and it was on the bench... next I heard was via email on the 4th stating the phone was fixed, this was accompanied by a photo of my phone working (nice touch).
2 hours later an email arrived saying the phone was on route to me via next day delivery and sure enough, this morning at 10.30 am the phone was here.
Its not often I come across a company thats worth shouting about but this is an exception to the rule.. the guys at fonefunshop.co.uk are very professional and fast and I HIGHLY recommend them to ANYONE that has issues with their phones.
I am in no way associated with this company!!
Nice work, 10 outta 10

Thanks for the headsup, makes experimenting not so worrying

I paid £6 to send it to them (insured next day) and I paid them a total of £33 which included next day return.
Total cost under £40 which I paid willingly.. not often we in the UK get a service which warrants shouting about.. such a nice change

Just out of curiosity, what exactly is JTag repair? I get that its for fully bricked phones, i just dont know what it is that they do to them to fix them.
Thanks

Basically its like flashing the BIOS on a pc.. if theres no bios the pc dont work.. they strip the phone down and attach wires all over it then flash a stock Samsung rom.
Before anyone flames me for this description its just a way of sort of explaining it.
Heres a video on an SGS i9100 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zN7le4GmxZs

m00moo, before you start crapping here, i advice u to read up some thread or search up what's the different between soft brick and hard brick. don't try to act clever, it doesn't help.
if you really wanna know what is the different between soft brick and hard brick, let me know. coz u definitely have no idea what you are crapping there.

I've bricked my phone a few times. Full brick, so no hardware button response at all. Before I started flashing I bought a USB jig from eBay for £1 (free delivery). Puts it into download mode so you can flash a from through Odin, and restore my back up.
Sounds like a good service, but if like me, your a bit of a tw*t and brick it every now again, for a pound you can't go wrong. Beats 40 a pop!
Worth investing the £1 as a first resort.

If the phone responds to USB Jig thats only a soft brick. Full brick is when it won't respond to that.

Semantics. The advice still stands. If you think its bricked. First port of call should be a JIG, not a 40 service. If the jig doesn't work, use the service.
PS. Wouldn't surprise me if the guy who created the thread works for the company, and is trying to get some free advertising.

Plastered all over this forum are the words use a USB jig to boot to download mode 99% should know that by now .
JTAG is a further step on the repair that until now i have been unable to locate in the UK thanks to the OP for the heads up .
As to the fact you think he is advertising the company and he works for them is uncalled for from you and just makes you look a pratt .

Forgive my sinicism, you can't blame anyone for thinking that though. I'm sure others who read the first post had that thought flash through their minds. Why not put it out there? It would have been a good move by the company to open a thread stating how good he service is. I work for a marketing company so, I would have missed a trick if I didn't think that.
I don't dispute it is a good service. Not knocking the company. Just merely stating that a USB jig would be a better start than paying £40 for the service.
Trying to help less experienced forum members keep some cash in their pocket after probably spending a ****load for the phone anyway.

I'm all for idiots spending money to support honest engineers. Anyone who sends off their phone for a jtag recovery instead of doing a bit of reading deserves our encouragement.

People gotta learn the difference between soft and hard bricks seriously, anyhow im glad it worked and also its awesome that there are ways to repair the phone without having to spend an extreme amount of cash for it
OP did mention he doesn't work there so, this

How do you know he didn't read? And how do you all know he didn't try a USB jig. Look at his stats he is hardly a noob. If you've messed up your bootloader chances are its hard bricked and no jig will help you with that.
p.s. I think this is a bargain if samsung refuse to fix under warranty. Is a jtag able to restore an efs that aint backed up??
Ricey

Your right, it is bargain if out completely **** your phone. But I would say 90% of bricked phones wouldn't need this service as a jig would work. If you have spent a lot on a phone and it bricked, and you hadn't done much reading, you probably Google it and this thread would pop up. You would read it and probably use it, without realizing that you could actually fix it for less. Most people wouldn't trawl through threads for the answer if they have just created 400 brick.
I don't why everyone is getting so uppety about my comment about him working for the company. If he doesn't, good find, he company is obviously very reasonably priced etc. If he does work for them, a why would he say he does? Second good on him. If people brick their phones, they are normally flashing and therefore using this forum. Would be an awesome place to get word around and increase sales.

Flash a rom that has the fix and call it done or wait for the offical fix to come out. Personally mine works since I've installed a fixed rom and I'm happy.

what i would hope to get from this is samsung getting there ass in gear, lawsuits are not always about the money...
Funny, I was actually thinking of a class action against Samsung last night.
And yes, Lieff Cabraser is a very reputable plaintiff-side firm.
The point of the class action wouldn't be to get bucketloads of $$, but it would punish Samsung for deceptive trade practices. It's just one way to let a company know they can't get away with this kind of crap.
The fact of the mater is that samsung advertised the phone as having certain features. If they knowingly released the product with those features is a subpar working condition, it is basically false advertising. The fact that they have focused on products that are not released indicates they have no intention if fixing this quickly.
Of you buy a car and fail to make your payment in time because you bought a new television, saying you will make the payment in a few weeks won't get you off the hook from penalties.
Samsung has a history of giving promises and nit fulfilling them. This time it is in print on the box. I'm normally nor a fan I'd class action, but this is a case where it may be warranted. The best porcine would be for people who are unsatisfied to get money back as long as the phone is in good working condition. Then unhappy people wouldn't be posting on these forums all day long.

I don't think flashing a ROM voids your warranty.
If you buy a computer from Dell, you have root access on that computer. If the computer doesn't do what you want, like play tetris, you install tetris. If you screw up your computer in the process, and it won't boot up any more, you may have a warranty that you can fall back on, if you paid for it and you are still within the time period. We install apps on our computers and phones all the time to increase their usability and functionality. Sometimes we replace the entire OS with a new OS. If you take your Dell computer, reformat the HD and install linux, can you still send it back to dell if the motherboard fails? Youbetcha. And does Dell sometimes release firmware updates to fix things that aren't perfect in the bios? Yep, that happens too. Perhaps the bluetooth never worked right on the new computer. They release a bios update to fix it.
That's life. Just because something doesn't work, doesn't mean you go suing them. Do you do that for everything that you buy? You've never bought a piece of computer hardware that just wouldn't work in your computer? Did you sue them too? You must be very busy keeping track with all those lawsuits.
Relax, Francis.

Hey Ryan - thanks for selling the phone to me for $130.
You received my PayPal payment and I am still waiting to receive tracking information.
Under normal circumstances, a message like this would be more appropriate to send through private channels, but I have tried emailing you for three days and calling you back at your google voice number without success. You were very easy to get a hold of before I paid, but seem to have vanished the moment I requested tracking information.
I hope you are not up to something sneaky. I assume with your online presence on twitter, in your blog, and elsewhere, that you're not trying to deceive me, and that you've simply decided to take a break from the internet and from your phone for a few days.
Hmm, except your twitter account was updated just hours ago?
Further googling shows you're actually an Android Developer. Therefore, you probably pretty much know this phone is permanently bricked, but when we talked you came across as though you weren't familiar with procedures for recovering from a soft brick. I find that difficult to believe given your Android experience.
Send me my brick, or send me a refund.

Don't give up cuz I was in the same position. Plus the best way to learned is from your mistakes. YouTube & Google good tools to learn. YouTube give you visualization & Google the reading understanding part. I believe you can fix your phone no need to sale it. One thing you need to be patient if not you are not going to learn. Without being patient is important in doing all this learning about Android OS. Modifying, rooting & flash customs roms.
Me... sometimes I want to take my hair off cuz it gets to be but I remember to be patient.

Seems a little odd that a Sprint customer having such an issue with their phone wouldn't have tried them first. You have 2 posts, so one could deduce that you don't follow the forum.

I had someone once who couldn't 'remember' "their" laptops boot password, and based on the fact they had to ask, I didn't think for one second about not mentioning that wiping the bios would do it. The story then changed to 'oh I just bought it from a pawn shop', but having dealt with pawn shops before, one would already know that they're not going to take in a machine with even the OS password'd, let alone the BOOT!

Ha, NOT locking your phone makes you end up like this guy! If you have a lock, no matter how talented of a drunk one may be, they're not getting past your 'lock'.
Now an unlocked phone can have one put onto it, as stated by the OP
You might as well just reset the wipe the phone. That is exactly what Sprint will tell you to do. Or try to request your gmail password.

How to Unbrick SGS2 - even hard brick!!

I've just came across this service called JTAG which unbricks any SGS2 even those that are hard bricked which cannot enter download mode via USB jig or even turn on. The catch is that its a $60 service.
Here is the youtube video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zN7le4GmxZs
Its from mobile tech review and they seem trust worthy ( i think) as they do have a lot of other related SGS2 videos on ''how to's'' and reviews.
This is not an advertisement about them, i just purely came across this youtube video as i am a subscriber to them. Just spreading the love guys.

Tokayto, I've hard bricked my sgs2 b/c repartition was auto selected and didn't double check but I believe that one of the programs used with JTAG is called RiffBox. Im sure there's others that Im unaware of but personally I know nothing about it... yet. My other problem is that I have ABSOLUTELY no clue about soldering I think I'll have to try sending my 2 week old sgs2 back to samsung to see if they'll fix it. If not then the mobiletechvideo guys are gonna get mine

Does anyone know of anyone in Australia who performs this service?
If not anyone intrested in helping me set one up?
I've not seen details of one posted in the 8 mths I've been here. Your best bet would be to use the US-based one on the first page of this thread. Price is fairly reasonable, around $120 AUD once you take posting the phone to them initially into account. I'm sure Samsung/an authorised repairer would charge you more than that.
Alternatively, contact local mobile phone repairers, you might come across one with the gear to JTAG a Samsung phone.

Does anyone know of anyone in Australia who performs this service?
If not anyone intrested in helping me set one up?

I've been thinking about purchasing a jtag riffbox and offering my services to help repair any hard bricked phones for a fee obviously not going to advertise anything until I've purchased the hardware to do so. But what do you guys think ? especially if I was to do special offers for members of the XDA forum.

Looking for the same thing..... it would be even better if the service is in sydney...
I have repaired my phone to ESD Romania and they say it changed my motherboard. I installed one of the official ROMs 4.0.4 and my phone was hard bricked. Fortunately the phone was under warranty and they fixed me free.

There's a huge thread about this exact problem, but the basic gist is that you're screwed

sorry but what do you mean i am "screwed" is there nothing i can do
According to said thread, nothing you can do short of sending it back to Samsung for a motherboard replacement.
Its under a 1 year manufacturers warranty. Make up some dumb **** story and send it back in. Thats the advice I got for my SGSII. "Tell them you were on the phone, it started to get stupid hot, and you did a battery pull." If you play a story well enough they should offer a replacement. Or check out mobile tech videos.com and see if they offer a jtag service for the note. Furthermore, if they do, you will want to contact them and explain and see if they could help before sending it in. Good luck, I know how upset I was when I bricked my SGSII.

You were in a cwm recovery, and not an ICS recovery?

thanks for your reply but alas i cannot do something like that as it would be considered as fraud and with my job(solicitor) i do not think that would be appropriate
i am very angry about this mind you, iI have read the disclaimer and understand the risks but after reading about a bit it seems like this rom has caused a lot of problems
