Nexus S/Bugless Beast. - Nexus S General

I'm receiving a white Nexus S in a couple of days running Bugless Beast (I believe its running the latest nightly). I'm just wondering if I can get some feedback on the ROM from the people who use it.
From a little of what I've read it seems to be a very well known ROM and developer. I've never had a "Pure" Google phone so I'm a little excited to see what it can do and so forth.
I know there's a thread about his announcement but I really don't feel like reading through 49 pages.
Thanks.

It's very close to a stock Android experience, and it's fast. You don't get a lot of the extra features like you do with other ROMs like CyanogenMod or Modaco's (to name a couple), but it's really nice on performance.
Also, if you don't like it, you can always flash a different ROM.

I heard the ICS update has had mixed feelings about battery life, some say its better some say its worse, hows this ROM on battery usage?
Sent via Atrix 4G, running Dorian's RedPill (CM7) Hybrid.

battery life will definitely vary between handsets. With my experiences its all luck. Some roms I would get decent battery life, other roms, not so much. This is coming from a person who tried every ics rom other there.
Currently on pixel.

i followed pete all the way up with my crespo and i can say his gingerbread roms are very good. they run smooth and stable even the instable nightlies. maybe the consumption should be lower but when i changed kernel(s)/rom(s) i always experienced instability or higher consumption. so my advice is to keep a "clean" pete rom. it's a good compromize.
regarding his ics roms ... i'm not not completely convinced e.g. the kernel is far from the best. however, it's just the beginning. i hope it ending up as the GB series.

Is there a main recovery for the Nexus S? Or does everyone just use Koushs CWM (ROM Manager)?

There's only two I have really seen, CWM and TWRP both are similar but TWRP has a few features cwm does not have.
1)TWRP is touch enabled
2)TWRP lets you choose which partitions to backup
Well that's all I know atm xD

I'm now using the latest 5 Jan BuglessBeast + Eugene 3.1.6 ICUP kernel,
cpu governor is smartassv2 and the result is an awesomeness. Really fast and smooth.
It's a close-to-stock vanilla rom. No visual UI mods but system enhancement and
optimization. Pete is a really good and well known developer.
It's also less power consume. The battery now is 66%, 12 hours usage.
I did some phone calls & a lot messages through SMS, MiTalk and WhatsApp.
A suggestion : you must try it yourself

TWRP has a recovery for the Atrix as well but it's still rather new, not many people have used it.
That's pretty good battery life considering you made voice calls and a lot of texts. I'll have to try that setup.
Thanks for the info.

I see your on the Atrix now. I had the Atrix for about 1 week. I couldn't stand it. The UI is nothing compared to that of the pure Google phone. The motoblur UI made the atrix seem laggy over the nexus s. I've been using the nexus s ever since and never regretted it. Still have my Atrix in my drawer.
As for the bugless beast. I'm using it now and it's great. No force closes of apps or anything. Theres one for ics and GB out there. I would reccomed Eugene's speedy kernel 3 for battery life. If you need help with BFS and CFS and which you should pick just let me know and I'll help. Welcome to the nexus family. You'll love it.

Thanks alot! Might need to take you up on that once I get the Nexus. I've heard from quite a few people recommending Eugenes speedy kernel, ill have to see what kernel its using already and go from there.
I agree that the motoblur on. The Atrix was pretty bad, but with custom roms like Darkside and CM7 based roms it makes the phone so much better. Should try it sometime.

Still a buggy phone!!

The Nexus S is quite possibly the best but most frustrating phone I've ever had. I love the hardware and the android OS. I still get random reboots, sometimes sms notifications never show up, and sometimes when I get a phone call the phone becomes unresponsive.
I've been using the latest NSCollab rom for several versions and have never over/under clocked. I clear the dalvik cache after every update and clear data/restore with titanium backup whenever necessary.
I'll feel like I've been doing everything correctly, yet I'm still left with a phone that gives me a lot of grief. What's the problem here? How can I fix this? This is extremely frustrating with no obvious solution.
I had a lot of problems with the nexus s... Now i have a galaxy sii, but i still have the nexus. Using the nscollab, i had a looooot of problems, now the phone are with the stock 2.3.4, in my tests, everything is fine. I will sell it now.

I don't know what kernel that rom uses but that and settings on voltages make the whole difference in stability. Something like stock rom with stock kernel or cm7 with stock or netatchys kernel are always good choices and will give you stability.
Just IMHO

I believe NSCollab is Cm7 with netarchy and the stock gingerbread launcher -- nothing crazy here.

NSCollab 1.0.35
Android : GB 2.3.4
System : CyanogenMod 7.1 [RC1] [CM Team]
Kernel : Netarchy CFS 1.3.4 [Netarchy]
Truth of the matter is that I've yet to come across a ROM that's rock solid. I've tried them all and always had either lots of random reboots, bootloops, or sluggishness.
I went back to stock last Thursday and it's been butter smooth since. No problems or anything of the sort.

The Oxygen ROM is very stable aswell.
i tried several roms, but after all i came back to stock, it is stable and fast.. I do miss many features from cm7, but i guess i can live without it.
currently i'm trying to find a kernel with a battery life as good as stock one... i really miss bln ...
All I'm saying look into your voltage settings. Each phone will work different and you have to play with adjusting them. It also takes some time and patience.

no ROM I've tried has ever compared to stock, especially 2.3.4, when it comes to stability.
I tried Many ROMs but all before 2.3.4 (end of April?) and none was able to run for more than a few days without some kind of reboot/bootloop etc.
2.3.4 has been running flawlessly ever since.
Current uptime is like 1100+ hrs and that too cause i had to remove battery to change SIM card.
Hi,
I have installed NSCollab 1.0.35 on a week and have not problems on my Nexus S.
To resume, i had some endless bootloop and a lot of reboot on long calls.

My 2 cents:
I'm on NSCollab 1.0.34, Netharky 1.3.4, KB3, OV to 1.2 Ghz, UV with protonvoltage. Gingerbread 2.3.4
I find this combo much faster than the stock one, smooth and pretty stable. Actually I have some reboots when I stress a lot my device, but they are rare.
So I don't want to renounce to Cyanogen features as the stock rom was really slow IMHO and I will give a try to NSCollab 1.0.35 very soon!
No problems in answering, good radio performance, faster than light (quadrant score: 3600) !! I can survive with a couple of reboot in a week!!
Too much porn?

Why don't you people stop confusing CM7 with a stable ROM? CyanogenMod and netarchy kernel are probably the most crappy android software that were ever made.
I suggest you use Oxygen ROM and Jame Bond kernel. No fancy quadrant benchmarks, stock ROM with basic functions like notification power control and text reflow in browser, zipaligned and all that stuff. Delete setcpu, delete juicedefender and other crappy so called battery savers, do not undervolt and do not touch the CPU frequency. Just let the ROM run like it is supposed to, don't fill it with all the bloatware you find on market that is said to increase performance or battery life, all they do is eating system resources.
I have yet to find a better combination like this for the nexus S, I am using the ROM since 3 days now without a single reboot/FC/freeze/bootloop. I am playing order and chaos MMO 2-3 hours and I can go through the full day without problems, the phone is responsive and simply works, no fancy sh*t.

short [REVIEW] CM 7.1 RC1 vs Stock 2.3.4 regarding performance and battery life

So, I'm toying with the idea of flashing CM7.1 RC1 to my i9020t
currently it's on stock 2.3.4 + netarchy stable, it runs very smooth like silk after some manual optimization.
most games runs really nice, but there are still a few that are laggy, so i was planning to check out CM7.1 RC1 to see if it runs any better.
However, there were old reports of issues with the CM7 and missing features, etc, etc, or some other that reported CM7 being even slower than 2.3.4 stock, so i'm not so sure if i want to spend all that time flashing stuff around
I only flash stable version of ROMs as i have limited free time, and can't really afford to be jumping back and forth between versions, as the little mods and tweaks, and customization takes several hours most of the time, and it's very time consuming, yet not something i can afford in a busy day.
It just happens today is a nice day to flash a ROM
anyways... here goes nothing...
starting with a Nandroid Backup before I mess around with CM7.1
the stability is not at the same level. With CM7, my phone would reboot on it's own every other day. Car home would lock the screen rotation, requiring a reboot. some of the features are nice, like the per permission restricting of apps. The debug code being enabled will cause (for me anyways) a heavier battery drain. I prefer stock with root.
I'm retesting CM7 because of the failure of 2.3.6 to fix a major bug and in the process introduce more issues. I'll probably role back to 2.3.4.
Sent from my Nexus S
i finally got time to flash it today, so i'll keep an eye on it for the next few days, to see how stable or unstable it is
CM 7.1 RC1 + netarchy 1.3.7 cfs @ 1300
and also i'll have to keep an eye on the battery drain
the stock 2.3.4 + netarchy was very good
REVIEW conclussion
so far only 1 non-random reboot, it was actually caused by an app, that was force closed.
however performance wise, as i feared, CM7.1 RC1 is quite a bit slower than stock 2.3.4
Games laggs way more in CM7.1 RC1 than on stock, even with all the CM7.1 eye candies and customization disabled / enabled it was the same result.
Also battery life was extremely bad!, as in you can actually see the % numbers drop in front of your eyes, as you run Apps / Games on the phone even with the charger plugged in!
on stock the numbers will go up, not down, when the charger is plugged.
yes, this pretty much means, i'll be going back to stock sometimes later today when i get some time to re-flash the whole thing again.
I'll be looking forward to try CM7.1 final / stable when and if all the CM team have settle up with their daily life to go back to normal and make the project go forward again, until then, i'm not planning to waste more time with CM7.1
Don't give up until you've run it with the Trinity TUV10 kernel.
hmm... it's worth a shot
heck might as well, lets see how the CM7.1 RC1 + Trinity plays together.
according to what i read already on the topic, seems like it'll be a disaster for battery life
but if performance is good and fluid, i think i can over look that.
Trinity Kernel conclussion
well CM7.1 RC1 + Trinity TUV10 certainly makes a much better combo than Netarchy
using Trinity, even the heaviest of games runs smooth without jitters (very important for racing games, or shooting games)
the most impressive thing is that it's doing all that at stock clock speed of 1 Ghz while Netarchy at 1.3 Ghz was struggling.
Unfortunately on the Battery side of things, it's still just as power hungry as any other custom ROMs, although not as bad as Netarchy.
well... i guess i'll be hanging on to CM7 RC1 for a while longer, at least things are playable now
Poor battery life is a common complain after flashing a new ROM (and wiping 9 months of battery stats). Give it a few days to rebuild the battery history, and see if it's more to your liking.
I would try one of the newer nigthlies they are quite better than rc1
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium
the nightlies are better than RC1, that is for sure. a lot more work has been done since RC1. also, i recommend the latest Trinity TEUV kernel--> http://goo.gl/roLqV its at 880mhz, feels like 1.2ghz, its gpu is overclocked to 240mhz, and its undervolted. so its very fast and its great on your battery life. and it goes well with the latest cm

Question, if I install a CM7 nightlies ROM or a different ROM and wanna install a kernel like Trinity and then do a nandroid backup after that I'd be able to do it even if I installed a ROM besides CM7 like NSCollab or SuperCM7 right? And how would the order go, wipe > flash rom > flash kernel > do nandroid backup before restarting the phone? Thanks.
In my experience the RC version of. M7 is much less buggier than nightlies. I'd get random reboots, apps freaking out and BA battery life. Been on cm7 RC for 3 days now with not a single reboot. I'm also using the stock kernel that comes with it.

And I do feel like CM7 RC1 on my Nexus S is slower than CM7 on my MT4G for whatever reason...I honestly just don't get that and friggin why...it's the friggin S and a Hummingbird in there, it can't be that much worse if it is then the 2nd gen 1ghz Snapdragon in the MT4G. My MT4G was blazing fast and had nice battery life in regards to an Android phone...but ugh CM7 on my S is kinda laggy sometimes and battery life is a disaster. I need a reccomendation for a really fast vanilla ROM to flash. Always loved CM and it's never disappointed me until now. I just don't get it, I mean I thought the battery life on my Nexus One was terrible but it's draining even faster on my S.

Legendary Rom RC2 with the 3.0 samurai kernel......
And flash a theme if you'd like bells and whistles. 3.0 has cpu ocable to 1.5 and gpu oc'd to 300 or 250 or stock if you want and there's a fps unlock on two of them. Legendary rom is what I'm running, stable, and everything works
Ever since I picked up my Epic at launch I've missed Cyanogen from my G1. While it isn't perfect in its current state I can't imagine using anything else. It's responsive, it's lean, and it extended my battery life by about four hours when I installed it. There's a list that doesn't work at the moment (911 emergency calls, 4G, several video codecs including Youtube HQ, video recording) but the things that work are fantastic.
I was about to jump to Verizon for a different device, but with the breath that Cyanogen gave my Epic I'm going to ride it out.
I've been using CleanGB since Build13, and have been loving the stability and battery life. I am currently running Build 17 with the Talkback Fix (which is, in effect, Build 18)...

[Q] New user wants to know what your favorite ROMS are (currently).

For the Atrix, which ROMS have you enjoyed using most?
I didn't see a thread (read:didn't ctrl-f "favorite ROM), and since there have been a good three or four updates to the big ROMS here, I wanted to know what everybody is trying out, what they feel the pros and cons are for each ROMS, what everybody's personal preference is, general battery life, etc.
I've tweaked around with CM7, DarkSide, and am currently running Neutrino ROM V2.0 EE. I'm addicted to trying out different ROMS on this phone.

wetdream so far has been the best battery life. Neutrino seems to be great performance however after spending several months OC'ed and going back to stock kernel, I can safely say most of the Android world doesn't currently benefit in any noticeable way from anything faster than 1.0GHz. Simply faster benchmarks is all.

If you try this you will see. I have tried them all, and this one is by far and away the best right now.
I also am interested in this question. If you can briefly say why you prefer a specific ROM that info would be greatly appreciated
I've used cm7-ics-mod2 for quite a while, but switched yesterday to neutrino 2.0, loving it so far. MIUI is pretty good but the sound bug keeps me from making it my everyday ROM.
CM9
I am using the CM9 ICS Rom. It is still in alpha, because it has some bugs and the camera is not functional. Since I rarely use my camera I have been using it for a week and love it.
Currently using Neutrino 1.4sEE and getting about 2days of battery life with around 3.5hrs of screen. Overall, it's pretty clean and really smooth especially with adwex
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
In my personal opinion, Neutrino 1.4 is by far the smoothest as well as the best ROM for battery life and performance that I have ever used.
Neutrino 2.0 is a bit buggy right now but once all the bugs are gone it will go face to face with CM9 (depending on your taste) . It is a very high calibre ROM and I hope that a CM9 version will also be available.

Right now, i've been using the alpha for MiUi. It is fantastic when it comes to battery life! Amazing! I'm actually shocked at how reliable this alpha rom is. I'm stuck here.
I hear nothing but great things for neutrino rom. I'll try it soon enough.
I had tried CM9 build #3 or something, and it was a bit buggy for me.
Used Aura for a month, then switched to cm7, went to neutrino(based on cm7), back to cm7. Now I am back to neutrino (about month). Neutrino is the best!!!!. No plans to leave it. Hope it will be cm9.

Neutrino is pretty bee's knees, but I have been having intermittent wifi issues (or maybe it is my router). Additionally I have had some strange GPS issues, and it has gotten to the point where I just fix permissions and reflash the GPS Mod he has posted there. I'm not sure if it is one of his tweaks specifically or just chance, but I tested the 4G with his ROM and my download speeds doubled. ICS was neat but since I use my phone for GPS I got tired of maps blanking out. And the lack of hardware acceleration is a total bummer at the moment. Darkside is super cool, but the theme bugs me a little. I'm not clear what the purpose is for Wet Dream so what are the major differences between it and Darkside?

For the Atrix, which ROMS have you enjoyed using most?
I didn't see a thread (read:didn't ctrl-f "favorite ROM), and since there have been a good three or four updates to the big ROMS here, I wanted to know what everybody is trying out, what they feel the pros and cons are for each ROMS, what everybody's personal preference is, general battery life, etc.
I've tweaked around with CM7, DarkSide, and am currently running Neutrino ROM V2.0 EE. I'm addicted to trying out different ROMS on this phone.
Cheers!

what rom can i use if im on 4.5.91 gingerbread(2.3.4)? that dont brick my phone?
---------- Post added at 08:04 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:55 PM ----------
thereĀ“s any safe rom that i can use with out brickin my phone? i want something like a room with a mirroring with out using webtop/lapdoc? just via HDMI?
Darkside has webdock, mirroring, and hdmi support. You won't brick your phone if you follow the forum post guides directions to the letter. Make sure you root your phone first, then unlock the bootloader, then flash a recovery on it. Most people seem to prefer clockwork recovery (assume this when you see CWM). Darkside likes RomRacer, which I understand is a special CWM variant with different features, most importantly EXT4 file system support. I think. I may have RomRacer mixed up with something else, I haven't flashed a recovery since Darkside.

[Q] recommend a ROM for speed and performance

I'm going through all the ROM's and its overwhelming so I'm asking for help. I'm looking for speed, performance, visual updated that also doesn't make me lose 4g, wifi, blue tooth or anything else major.
Please recommend any ROM's that might fit for me. I am rooted with clockwork mod recovery v5.0.2.2 with flashed supersonic_nolimit06-v101_020112 ROM.
thanks!
In my experience, I think that the stock setup works best. Maybe bump up the transition speed in Spare Parts.

My battery died so quickly with the stock setup, not to mention visually its not appealing. I've also have experienced less drag time with this recent rom. thanks though
I am having a good time with jamieg71 kwiq rom. Also decks 1.3d is good. If you can wait a bit longer we should be seeing a reloaded decks rom by jamieg71. Can't wait!!! Haha
SOS is great since its Sense 1.0 and based off the 4.67 update from Sprint. (Latest I think) so everything works and its definitely a visually appealing ROM. swagstr does great work, I'm running SOS X with ca1nes underworld kernel with SBC for a more complete charge. And with very heavy use I get roughly 8 hours. (I use my phone, for the phone lol.) Lots of good choices. Best thing to do is flash one and keep it for a couple of days and if it doesn't seem to fit your needs, try another. I tried many, but I keep going back to Swagged Out Stock.

Ok guys i have the perfect rom for you, just like Hockeytown1970 said 4 kornerz is the rom 4 u.It has speed, smoothness, working 4G,3G,bluetooth,wifi hotspot and tethering mod and very customizable and it has beats audio mod, anthrax kernel and volume+ to kick that sound up. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1612933
Plenty of AOSP ROMs have a great combination of speed and performance, especially if you use a custom kernel.
I noticed you didn't say "features". There are a lot of decent Sense ROMs that are a lot more generous with their features than the tweaky DIY world of AOSP, many of them plenty fast...

Swagged out stock N (the one with the go launcher) with lionfish kernel (I use aggressive), with smartassv2 as your governor, is likely to be the fastest out there. It has a lot of performance optimizations that AOSP roms typically don't match.
