Question - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I bought a 4g from a Guy for my chick. Cool phone BTW. I noticed in the T-Mobile news it says u guys r getting an ota gingerbread update...well her phone has 2.2.1 and we can't seem to find the "check for update" in the about phone section ...ideas?
And its not rooted

First make sure it is indeed stock. Then call T-Mobile. Ask them to push the latest OTA.

you can also easily root it , and flash a custom sense rom or just flash the gingerbread update , which is lying around in the android development thread somewhere

Or, find the PD15IMG.zip file for gingerbread. It's somewhere around the forum. Sorry can't link as I'm on my phone..

The mytouch techies are much nicer than the g2x guys lol. I nervous to root her phone I already bricked her vibrant. So to check if it was rooted I tried installing rom manager of course it said phone not rooted. No superuser prompts none of that. So I'm led to believe its not rooted...is there another way to check?
Update : I don't wanna root her phone. Imma keep it stock all the way. So the link is like the actual ota update from T-Mobile?

Put the PD15IMG.zip on the root of you SD card and boot into the bootloader. It will do the rest and ask you to confirm the update. Ensure your phone is charged more than 50%.

-reboot into hboot using volume down + power buttons
-hboot should see the file, and ask if you want to upgrade

Someone rooted for you? :O well makes no diff and if you saying that the person said you used the Visionary meth to obtain PermROOT then what you need to do is download PD15IMG.zip from Dev section and put it in root of your SDCard and go in bootloader as it will scan the file and follow the instruction from there as it will revert back to default stock rom, radio and give you S-ON.
We traded my g2 for the mytouch we gave each other the phones rooted but this one has the bad screen so Im gonna switch and It won't let me download directly on to phone from the phone so o have to do it from a computer?

Well where the file was uploaded to is very bad site as it drops connection and has this annoying verification systems. I would recommend you download it in your PC and then rename it from "PD15IMG_Glacier_TMOUS_1.17.531.2_Radio_12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.26_M_release_155771_signed.zip" to "PD15IMG.zip" (make sure its not PD15IMG.zip.zip) and put it in root of your SDCard.
File: PD15IMG_Glacier_TMOUS_1.17.531.2_Radio_12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.26_M_release_155771_signed.zip
MD5: 49D07F0EE7DE1765A6A84CB12FA53110
Size: 312 MB
Now I provide you with the md5 hash which you can use to verify if the file you downloaded is correct and not corrupted.

Questions you're afraid to ask

So I installed the new Sense 3.0 Fusion ROM and it's awesome. I couldn't figure out how to edit the app shortcuts that appeared on the lockscreen, though, so I posted over on a different forum and the admin answered it for me. I felt dumb, however, that someone like me - and like all of us I'm sure - who consider themselves somewhat tech-savvy sometimes can't figure out the solution to seemingly easy questions. The answer, by the way, is to go into the personalize menu then choose lockscreen and hit settings -- I know it sounds dumb, and I thought I had already tried that. My point is, sometimes we're too afraid to ask questions that seem dumb so we never do. I'll do my best to answer your questions, and remember, Google and xda are your friends. Maybe you can even post fun tricks you've found and we can all help each other a little. If this is a stupid idea then I'll just let it fade off into oblivion...

I believe it originated due to a dev named KingKlick. He was notoriously called out for stealing other peoples work and naming it his, thus the CM team created the work "Kang" due to him.
I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's it.
Q: are there any dangers in using PD15IMG.zip?
Q2: I see people having issues where recovery won't mount system or cache partitions, which pretty much bricks their phone. Is there any indication to what causes this, and how can i avoid those issues?
I dont no of any danger flashing the PD15IMG.zip. I used it on a MT4G that I was selling (due to cheap silicone) and it put the phone to out of the box Stock. Good as New.

I used visionary 14 with Root.Rar file to acheive Perma-Root. I have also rooted using the g-free method (the semi-automated one) and have went back to stock using the PD15IMG.zip as well, with no problems.
You've used pd15img from both rooting methods? I only ask because I thought I read somewhere that pd15img can have issues with the rooting method that didn't use gfree. But if you've done it then no worries

PD15IMG.zip can be various things, I've seen it as taking you back to 100% stock and as flashing a new radio. Going back to stock with it I've read is easy enough (and I've done it once and I rooted with visionary/unlocker method), and I hear warnings all the time about just putting it on the sdcard and booting into bootloader to change the radio but it worked fine for me.
As with everything read the entire, or most of, forum before along anything you're not comfortable with.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
I have used PD15IMG on a visionary root as well with no issues.
A question that I did have and felt like a goof asking it was not being able to get into my recovery by holding down volume down + power. The issue was that it would constantly load the PD15IMG when I tried this and would not allow me the option of booting into recovery because I kept that file on there anmed PD15IMG.
Once I took it off of the sd card, I was able to boot straight into recovery without issue. My workaround now, because I like to keep it on my sd card in case of emergency is simply keeping root explorer on there and it allows me to change the name of the file to whatever I want, allowing a boot into recovery by the v+p method and If I need it, I can just rename it through root explorer and it will load and put me back to stock!
And FWIW, I think this thread is a fantastic idea!
My noob question is I want to flash different roms but they say ext 3/4. Do I have to partition my sd card this way and can I do this with CW recovery? I don't want to lose info on my card. I am gfree rooted and running faux froyo kernal. Thx.

If you partition and SD card you will lose everything.
i also would advice against using ROM Manager for it. I'd use ADB if it were my phone...

If you are completely wiping when you install ROMs and don't use Titanium to restore backups I would try flashing the radio (at your own risk of course) or running the PD15IMG.zip and reverting to stock. If you aren't wiping completely do it, if you are using titanium know that it can cause errors when restoring data.

Flashing A New Radio
If I wanted to flash the latest radio for the mt4g, do I need adb to do so? Or could I just put it on the root of my sdcard and boot up to the hboot screen?

Can you flash a radio in recovery on the phone.

Did you read the radio thread? You don't flash radios through ADB. They're flashed in the bootloader, so you don't need a computer for anything. The instructions say to verify the MD5 checksum with ADB, but you can just as easily do that with an app like ManD5. And no, since the radio files in that thread are not "flashable", you cannot flash them in recovery.
What radios are able to flash, that will give better connection. Not trying to be a noob, kinda hard to type with two semi-broken wrists

Just follow the guide in the radio thread. The files do have to be named exactly PD15IMG.zip, but they come that way when downloaded, so there is nothing to change.
So I just download them,go into the bootloader,an let it run it. I just want to make sure on this.

I hear you. As long as the MD5 matches up, there isn't much risk of anything bad happening. It's as simple as moving the file to the root of your SD and booting into the bootloader. Good luck.

what exactly does it mean to verify the MD5. i was over at the radio thread, but some of the English isn't clear at some points and I don't know if they are crucial or not.
Its the serial number of the file, if it changes, you will brink your phone when you flash it

In the posts with each download for the Radios (and sometimes ROMs), you will see something that says "md5sum". In layman terms, its basically a confirmation number to make sure the file you downloaded is the exact same one that was originally posted. It's a safety measure to make sure you didn't get a bad download and then tried to flash a defective file onto your phone.
To verify it you can just download the app call "ManD5" and have it scan the file in question after you put it in your sdcard. It'll read the file and give you an MD5 number for you to compare with the one in the post you downloaded from. If the two match, you're safe.
If they don't match though, DO NOT FLASH THE FILE. IT COULD BRICK YOUR PHONE. Re-download it and check the md5 again. It's just a good safety practice when messing with things that could potentially destroy your expensive electronics.

MAKE SURE YOU BACKUP ANY USEFUL INFORMATION OR APPS FROM YOUR PHONE, BECAUSE YOUR ROM IS GOING TO BE WIPED.
First download the attachment. Remove the numbers from the name of the file so that it is renamed PC36IMG and place this on the root of your SD card. Power off the phone, then boot into your bootloader by holding the volume down and power buttons at the same time. Accept the update. If everything went OK, that should get rid of that Revolutionary at the top of your bootloader and flash the phone back to S-ON.
Next remove the file from your SD card by either rebooting your phone or going into your RECOVERY. I'm not going to give all the details for this.
Next, download this file.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=VSFLE9CD
Rename it PC36IMG, place it on your SD card and follow the same steps as you did with the first PC36IMG file.
Let me know if that worked, because how to unroot the phone has seemed to be forgotten around here. Everyone is just happy to root.

That doesn't work completely for Gingerbread.
You can downgrade the ROM back to Froyo, but the S-ON tool will not work with the new bootloader, and the bootloader will not downgrade by running any of the PC36IMG Froyo files or RUUs if Revolutionary was used to turn S-OFF.
Assuming that you mean to unroot and regain S-OFF on an Evo 4G that was rooted using Revolutionary...
It seems that this has been worked out.

Same thing that I posted, just thought I'd make it a little less detailed.

Good idea.
Maybe someone can create a guide, to put this question to rest? (I mean, since we finally have a working solution)

Oh by the way, thanks for the S-ON solution Captain. I thought of your idea about a week ago with the bootloader, and have a hex editor, but did not think it all the way through at the time.
this worked great but one prob. now when i try to re root with revolutionary it says im already s off but on bootloader im not. wassup with that?

if ur s-off then you are rooted. flash a recovery.
That's my issue. Revolutionary says I'm s off but on my bootloader it says s on

You need to flash an unrooted stock ROM to roll back your HBOOT to an upgradable version. I assume you used the modded 6.17 HBOOT to S-ON, but didn't flash a stock ROM to restore your HBOOT to stock?
Because the modded HBOOT is a higher version number than Revolutionary, most likely it believes you're already rooted.
I used RUU to update my phone to latest stock Rom and flashed the attachment on this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17501533 . But i do believe you're right sir and ill be trying this as soon as I get home

You essentially have two options:
- Run the RUU (ROM Update Utility) for the latest stock ROM on your PC
- Flash the latest stock ROM, in PC36IMG.zip format through FastBoot
Files for either/both of those can be found in my post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17206283&postcount=5

Ahh thanks so much you're a lifesaver. And do I download the hboot in your link or just flash Rom

Just flash the ROM. That should restore your HBOOT to 2.16, which is rootable with Revolutionary.
