Can you flash a radio in recovery on the phone. - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was thinking of flashing a new radio to my phone,I do have s-off,running cm 7.0 . I know you can flash a radio through adb,but I don't have a computer. Which leads me to why Im writing this topic.

Did you read the radio thread? You don't flash radios through ADB. They're flashed in the bootloader, so you don't need a computer for anything. The instructions say to verify the MD5 checksum with ADB, but you can just as easily do that with an app like ManD5. And no, since the radio files in that thread are not "flashable", you cannot flash them in recovery.

What radios are able to flash, that will give better connection. Not trying to be a noob, kinda hard to type with two semi-broken wrists

No one can be sure, you have to try it for yourself. Results vary by location. Person A may get astounding results with a GB radio, while person B may get ****ty results with the same radio.

Alright, what radios are flashable. Btw nice roms

Just follow the guide in the radio thread. The files do have to be named exactly PD15IMG.zip, but they come that way when downloaded, so there is nothing to change.

So I just download them,go into the bootloader,an let it run it. I just want to make sure on this.

Essentially, but never flash a radio without verifying the MD5 after downloading. That's VERY important.

I hear you. As long as the MD5 matches up, there isn't much risk of anything bad happening. It's as simple as moving the file to the root of your SD and booting into the bootloader. Good luck.

what exactly does it mean to verify the MD5. i was over at the radio thread, but some of the English isn't clear at some points and I don't know if they are crucial or not.

Its the serial number of the file, if it changes, you will brink your phone when you flash it

In the posts with each download for the Radios (and sometimes ROMs), you will see something that says "md5sum". In layman terms, its basically a confirmation number to make sure the file you downloaded is the exact same one that was originally posted. It's a safety measure to make sure you didn't get a bad download and then tried to flash a defective file onto your phone.
To verify it you can just download the app call "ManD5" and have it scan the file in question after you put it in your sdcard. It'll read the file and give you an MD5 number for you to compare with the one in the post you downloaded from. If the two match, you're safe.
If they don't match though, DO NOT FLASH THE FILE. IT COULD BRICK YOUR PHONE. Re-download it and check the md5 again. It's just a good safety practice when messing with things that could potentially destroy your expensive electronics.

Mytouch 4G won't FLASH ANYTHING!!

Ok, I've looked and searched and googled for the last few weeks now. I have a mytouch 4g that is on the stock rom w/ ota update. I do have perm root and s-off, per the thread here on xda. However, I can't get it to flash anything at all. Either in the hboot (bootloader) or in clockwork. I tried to flash a the cm7 (had on my hd2 and loved it) in clockwork, says can't open /directory addy with rom, then has this: (bad) installation aborted. I tried to flash a stock image to try and start over, the pd15img, had it named correctly etc. It goes for a sec, then says the .nbh files are missing for 3 different things. Can anyone help or is this phone effed? I can use it just fine, but the stock rom sucks and has stupid drm, which doesn't let me play most of my music. If someone can help and has paypal I WILL make a donation to you, I'm not rich, but am a busy father of 2 divorced with a full time job. PLEASE HELP!!!!
What cwm are you running?

3.0.0.5, I went to older versions of cwm also and still no dice at all. I am at a loss. I am by no means an expert, but have jailbroken iphones forever and did all the work on my hd2, so I'm not a complete noob but I still consider myself to be compared to others.

That's why you can't flash the stock image, which is Froyo based. 3.0.0.5 can only flash Gingerbread ROMs. However, that doesn't explain why CM7 won't boot for you, since 3.0.0.5 should successfully flash that. My suggestion would be to flash CWM 3.0.0.6 (can handle all ROMs) and then try re-flashing CM7 or the stock ROM.
I'll give it a whirl right now....will report back

There's the download for it. I meant to put it in my previous post.
I was pretty sure I tried this a while ago, and I was right, still nothing. It says the same thing, (bad) installation aborted, before all of that it says can't open /filedirectory. Seriously peeved at this phone at this point. It will not flash anything at all.
It could also be a corrupt SD card, or even though you have S-OFF, your phone isn't actually fully rooted (seems unlikely though since CWM is successfully installed). I'm sure someone else will chime in here eventually.
i have a couple spares, i'll check it out real quick. usually my comp will tell me if there is an issue with the sd card, so I'll try another quick like. I have and am using an sdhc patriot that is ok per tmobile, and i have an 8 and 16gb laying around also
edit it was a kingston in there. would that make a difference?

Not that I have noticed. I get the same amount of bad downloads on pc our my phone. Buy when it does happen I just download again and wipe everything again. There is a list here somewhere of everything to wipe, can't remember off the top of my head.

How many bad downloads have you gotten? I always download ROM files with my PC, and then transfer them to the SD via the USB cable. I always verify the MD5 when I can, but most devs don't provide that these days.
I gotten about 11 since I have had this phone. Thinking its something to do with my router. Noticed I drop connection for a second randomly. which can cause file to be corrupt. To lazy to get a new router lol

Regarding the leaked Gingerbread update and semi-bricks

Well for people who had a brick caused by VISIONary that was fixed by flashing the leaked Gingerbread update, I think I have an idea that might work on rooting it.
Why not replace the stock bootloader and recoveries that come in the PC10IMG.zip file with Clockworkmod recovery and the Engineering SPL. That way you can have S-OFF, which allows you to use to use Gingerbreak to root and CWM recovery which allows you to flash a different ROM on the G2.
Does this make sense, or did someone already try this and failed? I got the idea from the method I used to root my G1.

Best bet to find out if this would work or not is to ask the guys over at #G2ROOT irc.
And this doesn't really belong in the dev section, should be in Q&A
CRAP!!! I hit the wrong link! Sorry, moving my post.
And where's the link to the #G2ROOT IRC channel?
If I'm not mistaken, there's no way to get thoes items on the phone as the package won't pass signatue validation.
If we had thoes items, then we wouldn't need to root the leak rom, we could simply bypass it by flashing a new pre-rooted rom..
Perhaps you misunderstood how the process works?

perhaps i have, but what exactly is hindering the problem? did htc patch the hole in the firmware that allowed scotty2 to powercycle the eMMC chip?
Do u know what an md5 sum is? If anything is modified, even ONE BYTE, the sum changes. That is how u know if a file is corrupted/tampered. Signature verification is the same thing different name. The fact that you can't change the recovery because its not rooted means that you cannot bypass the sig verification. End of story. This idea will never work.

MAKE SURE YOU BACKUP ANY USEFUL INFORMATION OR APPS FROM YOUR PHONE, BECAUSE YOUR ROM IS GOING TO BE WIPED.
First download the attachment. Remove the numbers from the name of the file so that it is renamed PC36IMG and place this on the root of your SD card. Power off the phone, then boot into your bootloader by holding the volume down and power buttons at the same time. Accept the update. If everything went OK, that should get rid of that Revolutionary at the top of your bootloader and flash the phone back to S-ON.
Next remove the file from your SD card by either rebooting your phone or going into your RECOVERY. I'm not going to give all the details for this.
Next, download this file.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=VSFLE9CD
Rename it PC36IMG, place it on your SD card and follow the same steps as you did with the first PC36IMG file.
Let me know if that worked, because how to unroot the phone has seemed to be forgotten around here. Everyone is just happy to root.

That doesn't work completely for Gingerbread.
You can downgrade the ROM back to Froyo, but the S-ON tool will not work with the new bootloader, and the bootloader will not downgrade by running any of the PC36IMG Froyo files or RUUs if Revolutionary was used to turn S-OFF.
Assuming that you mean to unroot and regain S-OFF on an Evo 4G that was rooted using Revolutionary...
It seems that this has been worked out.

You need to flash an unrooted stock ROM to roll back your HBOOT to an upgradable version. I assume you used the modded 6.17 HBOOT to S-ON, but didn't flash a stock ROM to restore your HBOOT to stock?
Because the modded HBOOT is a higher version number than Revolutionary, most likely it believes you're already rooted.
I used RUU to update my phone to latest stock Rom and flashed the attachment on this thread

You essentially have two options:
- Run the RUU (ROM Update Utility) for the latest stock ROM on your PC
- Flash the latest stock ROM, in PC36IMG.zip format through FastBoot

ok followed your instructions to the letter. the file i downloaded was the first file in the link provided earlier in the thread. it was the PD145IMG_GLACIER_GINGERBREAD_S_TMOUS_RADIO that file lol. now after following your very detailed instructions at the point where it said follow on screen instructions it never made it there. it did see the file but it said something like wrong image...did i download the wrong file?
